Abstract
The various steps in the mechanism of olefin polymerizations mediated by neutral rare-earth metallocene complexes are discussed. The complexes are either trivalent hydride and alkyl rare-earth compounds or divalent metallocenes that are activated by the monomer via an oxidation step. The stereospecific polymerizations of conjugated dienes based on the association of a cationic metallocene complex and an alkylaluminum and the polymerization mechanism based on monomer insertion into an aluminum-carbon bond are also discussed. The exploitation of metallocene complexes for the copolymerization of olefins with conjugated dienes is the subject of a third part of this review. The synthesis of new elastomers called ethylene butadiene rubber (EBR) is highlighted. Finally, the use of rare-earth metallocenes in macromolecular engineering is detailed. This includes the synthesis of functional polyolefins and block copolymers including thermoplastic elastomers.

Abstract
A palladium-catalyzed coupling reaction between 4,5-dibromo-2,7-di-tert-butyl-9,9-dimethylxanthene and 2 equiv. of 1,3-diisopropylimidazolin-2-imine afforded the rigid neutral 2,7-di-tert-butyl-4,5-bis(1,3-diisopropylimidazolin-2-imino)-9,9-dimethylxanthene (XII2) pincer ligand. Reaction of XII2 with YCl3(THF)3.5 provided [(XII2)YCl3] (1). However, compound 1 failed to react cleanly with 3 equiv. of LiCH2SiMe3, and the reaction of XII2 with [Y(CH2SiMe3)3(THF)2] afforded a complex mixture of products. To access group 3 alkyl complexes without the intermediacy of [(XII2)M(CH2SiMe3)3], the XII2 ligand was protonated using [H(OEt2)2][B(C6F5)4] to form [H(XII2)][B(C6F5)4], and subsequent reaction with [M(CH2SiMe3)3(THF)2] (M = Y, Sc) directly afforded the cationic scandium and yttrium dialkyl complexes [(XII2)M(CH2SiMe3)2][B(C6F5)4] {M = Y (2) and Sc (3)}. Reaction of 3 with B(C6F5)3 in C6D5Br afforded dicationic [(XII2)Sc(CH2SiMe2CH2SiMe3)][MeB(C6F5)3][B(C6F5)4] (4) featuring a CH2SiMe2CH2SiMe3 ligand, formed as a result of methyl anion abstraction from silicon, with concomitant migration of the neighbouring CH2SiMe3 group from scandium to silicon. The MeB(C6F5)3 anion in 4 forms a contact ion pair. By contrast, reaction of 1 with [CPh3][B(C6F5)3] in C6D5Br/toluene or o-C6H4F2/toluene afforded dicationic [(XII2)Sc(CH2SiMe3)(ηx-toluene)n][B(C6F5)4]2 (5). Compounds 2-4 showed negligible ethylene polymerization activity, whereas 5 is highly active (up to 870 kg mol-1 h-1 atm-1 in o-C6H4F2/toluene under 1 atm of ethylene at room temperature).

Abstract
Abstract
Organometallic complexes of neodymium have unique coordinating ability to form both micro and macromolecules as well as metal-based polymers. These complexes have been reported in different fields and play a tremendous role in luminescence, catalytic, biological and magnetic applications. So, the current study will comprise all possible routes for the synthesis of organometallic complexes of neodymium. Neodymium complexes have been synthesized of single, double, triple and tetra linkages with H, C, N, O as well as S, B, and X. The detailed synthetic routes have been classified into four categories but in brief, neodymium forms complexes by reacting metal chloride, nitrate or oxide (hydrated or dehydrated) as precursor along with appropriate ligand. Most applied solvents for neodymium complexes were Toluene and THF. These complexes required a range of temperature based on the nature of complexes as well as linkages. The authors have surveyed the research work published through 2011–2020 and provide a comprehensive overview to understand the synthetic routes of organometallic complexes of neodymium.

Abstract
The reactivity of rare-earth complexes RE(BH4)2(C3H5)(THF)x (RE = La, Nd, Sm, Y, Sc) toward the Ring-Opening Polymerization (ROP) of ε-caprolactone (ε-CL) was rationalized by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. Even if the polymerization reaction can be initiated by both RE-(BH4) and RE-allyl bonds, experimental investigations have shown that the initiation via the borohydride ligand was favored, as no allyl group could be detected at the chain-end of the resulting polymers. DFT studies could confirm these observations, as it was highlighted that even if the activation barriers are both accessible, the allyl group is not active for the ROP of ε-CL due to the formation of a highly stable intermediate that disfavors the subsequent ring-opening.

Abstract
A series of new trivalent rare-earth allyl-borohydride complexes with the formula [RE(BH4 )2 (C3 H5 )(thf)x ] (RE=Sc (1), x=2; RE=Y (2) and La (3), x=3) were synthesized by reaction of the corresponding rare-earth trisborohydrides [RE(BH4 )3 (thf)x ] with half an equivalent of bis(allyl)magnesium. The complexes were fully characterized by determining their X-ray structure. Similar to their previously described Nd (4) and Sm (5) analogues, these complexes display a monomeric structure with two terminal trihapto BH4 groups, one π-η3 allyl ligand, three THF molecules for complexes 2 and 3, and two THF molecules for complex 1. The catalytic behavior of complexes 1-5 toward the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of l-lactide (l-LA) and ϵ-caprolactone (ϵ-CL) was assessed. The Nd complex featured the best activity toward l-LA (turnover frequency (TOF)=1300 h-1 ) and the order was Nd>La>Sm>Y>Sc. Complexes 1-3 were found very active for the ROP of ϵ-CL (TOF=166 000 h-1 ), which is in line with the already established exceptionnally high performance of complexes 4 and 5. With both monomers, it was shown that the borohydride moiety was the preferentially initiating group, rather than the allyl one. The random copolymerization of l-LA and ϵ-CL was performed with complexes 1-5, in the absence or in the presence of benzyl alcohol as a chain-transfer agent, affording copolymers with ϵ-caprolactone up to 62 % inserted. The copolymers synthesized display a variety of microstructures, that is, blocky, random, or quasi-alternating.

Abstract
A homoleptic scandium trialkyl complex in combination with a borate compound served as an excellent catalyst for the C-H addition of aliphatic tertiary amines to olefins. This highly regiospecific, 100% atom efficient C-H bond alkylation reaction was applicable to a wide variety of tertiary amines and olefins, including functionalised styrenes and unactivated α-olefins. This work represents the first example of rare-earth catalysed olefin hydroaminoalkylation and also the first example of catalytic C-H addition of aliphatic tertiary amines to olefins with any catalyst.

Abstract
Previous results obtained for the cis-polymerisation of isoprene with scandium half-sandwich complex Cp*Sc(BH(4))(2)(THF) 1a were extended to its neodymium analog. The X-ray structure of the already reported neodymium monomer compound Cp*Nd(BH(4))(2)(THF)(2) 1b is presented. Cp*Nd(BH(4))(2)(THF)(2)/[CPh(3)][B(C(6)F(5))(4)]/Al((i)Bu)(3) catalytic system was found to be very active and stereoselective towards isoprene polymerisation, leading to highly 1,4-cis polyisoprene up to 92%. The effect on isoprene polymerisation of the addition of a NHC molecule to Cp*Ln(BH(4))(2)(THF)(n) pre-catalyst (Cp* = η(5)-C(5)Me(5), Ln = Sc, n = 1, 1a; Nd, n = 2, 1b; Sm, n = 2, 1c) or to a trisborohydride Ln(BH(4))(3)(THF)(n) (Ln = Sc, n = 1.5, 2a; Nd, n = 3, 2b; Sm, n = 3, 2c) was also studied. Several NHC ligands were assessed: the classical [1-C{(N(t)BuCH)}(2)] (L(1)) and functional N-heterocyclic carbenes, two amino-tethered HNBu(t)CH(2)CH(2)[1-C{N(CHCH)NR}] (HL(2-R)) (R = (t)Bu, Mes (Mes = 2,4,6-Me(3)-C(6)H(2))) and the hydroxyl-tethered HOCMe(2)CH(2)[1-C{N(CHCH)N(i)Pr}] (HL(3)). Neodymium-based complex (L(2-tBu))Nd(BH(4))(2)(THF)(2) 3 could be isolated and characterized. With some of the catalytic combinations tested, the introduction of the NHC ligand in the coordination sphere of the complex induces a switch of the stereoselectivity of the resulting polymer. Scandium complex 2a, which produces mainly 1,4-cis polyisoprene when associated to a borate activator and aluminum alkyl, leads to 1,4-trans polymer up to 94% regular when HL(2-tBu) carbene is added to the same reaction mixture. This result is the only example of highly trans-polyisoprene synthesized with a scandium based catalyst. Coordination of the carbene moiety to the rare earth centre is confirmed by NMR studies on paramagnetic neodymium pre-catalysts.

Abstract
Efficient protocols for the syntheses of well-defined, solvent-free cations of the large alkaline-earth (Ae) metals (Ca, Sr, Ba) and their smaller Zn and Mg analogues have been designed. The reaction of 2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-(morpholinomethyl)phenol ({LO(1)}H), 2-{[bis(2-methoxyethyl)amino]methyl}-4,6-di-tert-butylphenol ({LO(2)}H), 2-[(1,4,7,10-tetraoxa-13-azacyclopentadecan-13-yl)methyl]-4,6-di-tert-butylphenol ({LO(3)}H), and 2-[(1,4,7,10-tetraoxa-13-azacyclo-pentadecan-13-yl)methyl]-1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropan-2-ol ({RO(3)}H) with [H(OEt(2))(2)](+)[H(2)N{B(C(6)F(5))(3)}(2)](-) readily afforded the doubly acidic pro-ligands [{LO(1)}HH](+)[X](-) (1), [{LO(2)}HH](+)[X](-) (2), [{LO(3)}HH](+)[X](-) (3), and [{RO(3)}HH](+)[X](-) (4) ([X](-) = [H(2)N{B(C(6)F(5))(3)}(2)](-)). The addition of 2 to Ca[N(SiMe(3))(2)](2)(THF)(2) and Sr[N(SiMe(3))(2)](2)(THF)(2) yielded [{LO(2)}Ca(THF)(0.5)](+)[X](-) (5) and [{LO(2)}Sr(THF)](+)[X](-) (6), respectively. Alternatively, 5 could also be prepared upon treatment of {LO(2)}CaN(SiMe(3))(2) (7) with [H(OEt(2))(2)](+)[X](-). Complexes [{LO(3)}M](+)[X](-) (M = Zn, 8; Mg, 9; Ca, 10; Sr, 11; Ba, 12) and [{RO(3)}M](+)[X](-) (M = Zn, 13; Mg, 14; Ca, 15; Sr, 16; Ba, 17) were synthesized in high yields (70-90%) by reaction of 3 or 4 with the neutral precursors M[N(SiMe(3))(2)](2)(THF)(x) (M = Zn, Mg, x = 0; M = Ca, Sr, Ba, x = 2). All compounds were fully characterized by spectroscopic methods, and the solid-sate structures of compounds 1, 3, 7, 8, 13, 14, {15}(4)·3CD(2)Cl(2), {16}(4)·3CD(2)Cl(2), and {{17}(4)·EtOH}·3CD(2)Cl(2) were determined by X-ray diffraction crystallography. Whereas the complexes are monomeric in the case of Zn and Mg, they form bimetallic cations in the case of Ca, Sr and Ba; there is no contact between the metal and the weakly coordinating anion. In all metal complexes, the multidentate ligand is κ(6)-coordinated to the metal. Strong intramolecular M···F secondary interactions between the metal and F atoms from the ancillary ligands are observed in the structures of {15}(4)·3CD(2)Cl(2), {16}(4)·3CD(2)Cl(2), and {{17}(4)·EtOH}·3CD(2)Cl(2). VT (19)F{(1)H} NMR provided no direct evidence that these interactions are maintained in solution; nevertheless, significant Ae···F energies of stabilization of 25-26 (Ca, Ba) and 40 kcal·mol(-1) (Sr) were calculated by NBO analysis on DFT-optimized structures. The identity and integrity of the cationic complexes are preserved in solution in the presence of an excess of alcohol (BnOH, (i)PrOH) or L-lactide (L-LA). Efficient binary catalytic systems for the immortal ring-opening polymerization of L-LA (up to 3,000 equiv) are produced upon addition of an excess (5-50 equiv) of external protic nucleophilic agents (BnOH, (i)PrOH) to 8-12 or 13-17. PLLAs with M(n) up to 35,000 g·mol(-1) were produced in a very controlled fashion (M(w)/M(n) ≈ 1.10-1.20) and without epimerization. In each series of catalysts, the following order of catalytic activity was established: Mg ≪ Zn < Ca < Sr ≈ Ba; also, Ae complexes supported by the aryloxide ligand are more active than their parents supported by the fluorinated alkoxide ancillary, possibly owing to the presence of Ae···F interactions in the latter case. The rate law -d[L-LA]/dt = k(p)·[L-LA](1.0)·[16](1.0)·[BnOH](1.0) was established by NMR kinetic investigations, with the corresponding activation parameters ΔH(++) = 14.8(5) kcal·mol(-1) and ΔS(++) = -7.6(2.0) cal·K(-1)·mol(-1). DFT calculations indicated that the observed order of catalytic activity matches an increase of the L-LA coordination energy onto the cationic metal centers with parallel decrease of the positive metal charge.
