Gas-Phase Selective Oxidation of Methane into Methane Oxygenates

Methane is an abundant resource and its direct conversion into value-added chemicals has been an attractive subject for its efficient utilization. This method can be more efficient than the present energy-intensive indirect conversion of methane via syngas, a mixture of CO and H2. Among the various approaches for direct methane conversion, the selective oxidation of methane into methane oxygenates (e.g., methanol and formaldehyde) is particularly promising because it can proceed at low temperatures. Nevertheless, due to low product yields this method is challenging. Compared with the liquid-phase partial oxidation of methane, which frequently demands for strong oxidizing agents in protic solvents, gas-phase selective methane oxidation has some merits, such as the possibility of using oxygen as an oxidant and the ease of scale-up owing to the use of heterogeneous catalysts. Herein, we summarize recent advances in the gas-phase partial oxidation of methane into methane oxygenates, focusing mainly on its conversion into formaldehyde and methanol.

Electronic Effects on Room-Temperature, Gas-Phase C-H Bond Activations by Cluster Oxides and Metal Carbides: The Methane Challenge

This Perspective discusses a story of one molecule (methane), a few metal-oxide cationic clusters (MOCCs), dopants, metal-carbide cations, oriented-electric fields (OEFs), and a dizzying mechanistic landscape of methane activation! One mechanism is hydrogen atom transfer (HAT), which occurs whenever the MOCC possesses a localized oxyl radical (M-O^•). Whenever the radical is delocalized, e.g., in [MgO]_n^•+ the HAT barrier increases due to the penalty of radical localization. Adding a dopant (Ga₂O₃) to [MgO]₂^•+ localizes the radical and HAT transpires. Whenever the radical is located on the metal centers as in [Al₂O₂]^•+ the mechanism crosses over to proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET), wherein the positive Al center acts as a Lewis acid that coordinates the methane molecule, while one of the bridging oxygen atoms abstracts a proton, and the negatively charged CH₃ moiety relocates to the metal fragment. We provide a diagnostic plot of barriers vs reactants' distortion energies, which allows the chemist to distinguish HAT from PCET. Thus, doping of [MgO]₂^•+ by Al₂O₃ enables HAT and PCET to compete. Similarly, [ZnO]^•+ activates methane by PCET generating many products. Adding a CH₃CN ligand to form [(CH₃CN)ZnO]^•+ leads to a single HAT product. The CH₃CN dipole acts as an OEF that switches off PCET. [MC]⁺ cations (M = Au, Cu) act by different mechanisms, dictated by the M⁺-C bond covalence. For example, Cu⁺, which bonds the carbon atom mostly electrostatically, performs coupling of C to methane to yield ethylene, in a single almost barrier-free step, with an unprecedented atomic choreography catalyzed by the OEF of Cu⁺.

Co-Adsorption of O2 and CO on Au2- : Infrared Photodissociation Spectroscopy and Theoretical Study of [Au2 O2 (CO)n ]- (n=2-6)

The co-adsorption of O₂ and CO on anionic sites of gold species is considered as a crucial step in the catalytic CO oxidation on gold catalysts. In this regard, the [Au₂ O₂ (CO)_n ]^- (n=2-6) complexes were prepared by using a laser vaporization supersonic ion source and were studied by using infrared photodissociation spectroscopy in the gas phase. All the [Au₂ O₂ (CO)_n ]^- (n=2-6) complexes were characterized to have a core structure involving one CO and one O₂ molecule co-adsorbed on Au₂^- with the other CO molecules physically tagged around. The CO stretching frequency of the [Au₂ O₂ (CO)]^- core ion is observed around ν˜ =2032-2042 cm^-1 , which is about 200 cm^-1 higher than that in [Au₂ (CO)₂ ]^- . This frequency difference and the analyses based on density functional calculations provide direct evidence for the synergy effect of the chemically adsorbed O₂ and CO. The low lying structures with carbonate group were not observed experimentally because of high formation barriers. The structures and the stability (i.e., the inertness in a sense) of the co-adsorbed O₂ and CO on Au₂^- may have relevance to the elementary reaction steps on real gold catalysts.

Adsorption of a single gold or silver atom on vanadium oxide clusters

The single Au atom can be adsorbed on both V and O sites of vanadium oxide clusters with quite large binding energies, illustrating the stabilization of noble atoms in single-atom catalysts.

High reactivity of nanosized niobium oxide cluster cations in methane activation: A comparison with vanadium oxides

The reactions between methane and niobium oxide cluster cations were studied and compared to those employing vanadium oxides. Hydrogen atom abstraction (HAA) reactions were identified over stoichiometric (Nb2O5)N(+) clusters for N as large as 14 with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The reactivity of (Nb2O5)N(+) clusters decreases as the N increases, and it is higher than that of (V 2O5)N(+) for N ≥ 4. Theoretical studies were conducted on (Nb2O5)N(+) (N = 2-6) by density functional calculations. HAA reactions on these clusters are all favorable thermodynamically and kinetically. The difference of the reactivity with respect to the cluster size and metal type (Nb vs V) was attributed to thermodynamics, kinetics, the electron capture ability, and the distribution of the unpaired spin density. Nanosized Nb oxide clusters show higher HAA reactivity than V oxides, indicating that niobia may serve as promising catalysts for practical methane conversion.

Methane Activation by Iron-Carbide Cluster Anions FeC6(-)

Laser-ablation-generated and mass-selected iron-carbide cluster anions FeC6(-) were reacted with CH4 in a linear ion trap reactor under thermal collision conditions. The reactions were characterized by mass spectrometry and density functional theory calculations. Adsorption product of FeC6CH4(-) was observed in the experiments. The identified large kinetic isotope effect suggests that CH4 can be activated by FeC6(-) anions with a dissociative adsorption manner, which is further supported by the reaction mechanism calculations. The large dipole moment of FeC6(-) (19.21 D) can induce a polarization of CH4 and can facilitate the cleavage of C-H bond. This study reports the CH4 activation by transition-metal carbide anions, which provides insights into mechanistic understanding of iron-carbon centers that are important for condensed-phase catalysis.

Gas-phase reaction of CeVO5+ cluster ions with C2H4: the reactivity of cluster bonded peroxides

The reactivity of the peroxide unit with hydrocarbon molecules on transition metal oxide clusters with a closed-shell electronic structure has been identified for the first time.

On the structural and electronic properties of hexanuclear vanadium oxide clusters V6On(-/0) (n=12-15): is V6O12 cluster planar or cage-like?

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are carried out to investigate the structural and electronic properties of a series of hexanuclear vanadium oxide clusters V6On(-/0) (n=12-15). Generalized Koopmans' theorem is applied to predict the vertical detachment energies (VDEs) and simulate the photoelectron spectra (PES) for V6On(-) (n=12-15) clusters. Extensive DFT calculations are performed in search of the lowest-energy structures for both the anions and neutrals. All of these clusters appear to prefer the polyhedral cage structures, in contrast to the planar star-like structures observed in prior model surface studies for the V6O12 cluster. Molecular orbitals are performed to analyze the chemical bonding in the hexanuclear vanadium oxide clusters and provide insights into the sequential oxidation of V6On(-) (n=12-15) clusters. The V6On(-) (n=12-15) clusters possess well-defined V(5+) and V(3+) sites, and may serve as molecular models for surface defects. Electron spin density analyses show that the unpaired electrons in V6On(-) (n=12-14) clusters are primarily localized on the V(3+) sites rather than on the V(5+) sites. The difference gas phase versus model surface structures of V6O12 hints the critical roles of cluster-substrate interactions in stabilizing the planar V6O12 cluster on model surfaces.

Gas-phase reactions of cationic vanadium-phosphorus oxide clusters with C2H(x) (x=4, 6): a DFT-based analysis of reactivity patterns

The reactivities of the adamantane-like heteronuclear vanadium-phosphorus oxygen cluster ions [V(x)P(4-x)O(10)](.+) (x=0, 2-4) towards hydrocarbons strongly depend on the V/P ratio of the clusters. Possible mechanisms for the gas-phase reactions of these heteronuclear cations with ethene and ethane have been elucidated by means of DFT-based calculations; homolytic C-H bond activation constitutes the initial step, and for all systems the P-O(.) unit of the clusters serves as the reactive site. More complex oxidation processes, such as oxygen-atom transfer to, or oxidative dehydrogenation of the hydrocarbons require the presence of a vanadium atom to provide the electronic prerequisites which are necessary to bring about the 2e(-) reduction of the cationic clusters.

Gas-Phase Neutral Binary Oxide Clusters: Distribution, Structure, and Reactivity toward CO

Neutral binary (vanadium-cobalt) oxide clusters are generated and detected in the gas phase for the first time. Their reactivities toward carbon monoxide (CO) are studied both experimentally and theoretically. Experimental results suggest that neutral VCoO4 can react with CO to generate VCoO3 and CO2. Density functional theory studies show parallel results as well as provide detailed reaction mechanisms.

C-H bond activation by oxygen-centered radicals over atomic clusters

Saturated hydrocarbons, or alkanes, are major constituents of natural gas and oil. Directly transforming alkanes into more complex organic compounds is a value-adding process, but the task is very difficult to achieve, especially at low temperature. Alkanes can react at high temperature, but these reactions (with oxygen, for example) are difficult to control and usually proceed to carbon dioxide and water, the thermodynamically stable byproducts. Consequently, a great deal of research effort has been focused on generating and studying chemical entities that are able to react with alkanes or efficiently activate C-H bonds at lower temperatures, preferably room temperature. To identify low-temperature methods of C-H bond activation, researchers have investigated free radicals, that is, species with open-shell electronic structures. Oxygen-centered radicals are typical of the open-shell species that naturally occur in atmospheric, chemical, and biological systems. In this Account, we survey atomic clusters that contain oxygen-centered radicals (O(-•)), with an emphasis on radical generation and reaction with alkanes near room temperature. Atomic clusters are an intermediate state of matter, situated between isolated atoms and condensed-phase materials. Atomic clusters containing the O(-•) moiety have generated promising results for low-temperature C-H bond activation. After a brief introduction to the experimental methods and the compositions of atomic clusters that contain O(-•) radicals, we focus on two important factors that can dramatically influence C-H bond activation. The first factor is spin. The O(-•)-containing clusters have unpaired spin density distributions over the oxygen atoms. We show that the nature of the unpaired spin density distribution, such as localization and delocalization within the clusters, heavily influences the reactivity of O(-•) radicals in C-H bond activation. The second factor is charge. The O(-•)-containing clusters can be negatively charged, positively charged, or neutral overall. We discuss how the charge state may influence C-H bond activation. Moreover, for a given charge state, such as the cationic state, it can be demonstrated that local charge distribution around the O(-•) centers can also significantly change the reactivity in C-H bond activation. Through judicious synthetic choices, spin and charge can be readily controllable physical quantities in atomic clusters. The adjustment of these two properties can impact C-H bond activation, thus constituting an important consideration in the rational design of catalysts for practical alkane transformations.
