Synthesis and reactivity of 4,5-[1,2-dicarba-closo-dodecaborano(12)]-1,3-diselenacyclopentane: opening of the icosahedron to give a zwitterionic intermediate and conversion into 7,8-dicarba-nido-undecaborate(1-)

Thiaborane clusters with an exoskeletal B-H group

The thiaboranes closo-1-SB11H11 (1a) and 12-I-closo-1-SB11H10 (1b) react with 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine under inert conditions upon the formation of the nido-type thiaboranes 9-B{(4-Me2N)C5NH4}2(H)-7-SB10H11 and 9-B{(4-Me2N)C5NH4}2(H)-5-I-7-SB10H10 containing an exoskeletal B-H group. The same type of B-H moiety is also stabilised by one bipyridine molecule in a chelating fashion. These complexes are unstable in solution, and in air and hydrolyse to monodeboronated ionic compounds having [nido-7-SB10H11]- or [5-I-nido-7-SB10H10]- anions which are also products of the reactions of 1a and 1b with other N-bases such as pyridine, ammonia and DABCO. The extrusion of one boron and one sulphur atom takes place when 1a reacts with 2,6-di-tert-butylpyridine to yield decaborane.

Electronic versus steric control in palladium complexes of carboranyl phosphine-iminophosphorane ligands

A new family of carboranyl phosphine-iminophosphorane ligands was prepared and characterized. The new ligands present a carboranyl group directly attached to the iminophosphorane nitrogen atom through a cage carbon atom (C-carboranyl derivatives L1-L3) or through the B3 boron atom (B-carboranyl derivatives L4 and L5), and the phosphine group on a side chain derived from the diphosphine dppm, i.e. with a two-atom spacer between the P and N donor atoms. The non-carboranyl analogue L6, with a biphenyl group on the nitrogen atom, was also synthesized for comparison. These potential (P, N) ligands were used to obtain palladium complexes (Pd1-Pd6) and, thus, study how the different inductive effect of the carboranyl substituents can modify the coordinating ability of the nitrogen atom. The structural analysis of the complexes revealed two different coordination modes for the ligands: the (P, N) chelate coordination and the unexpected P-terminal coordination, which is not observed for non-carboranyl phosphine-iminophosphoranes. These unexpected structural differences led us to perform DFT calculations on the ligands and metal complexes. The calculations show that the final coordination modes depend on the balance between the electronic and steric properties of the particular carboranyl group.

Synthesis of Chrysogeside B from Halotolerant Fungus Penicillium and Its Antimicrobial Activities Evaluation

Chrysogeside B, a natural cerebroside, was efficiently synthesized from commercial feedstocks. The bioassays showed that compounds 4, 5 and 6 exhibited enhanced biological activities compared Chrysogeside B. Further studies revealed that free hydroxyl groups and glycosidic bond have significant impact on the antimicrobial activities. The synthesis of Chrysogeside B and analogues designed to allow identification of the features of this glycolipid required for recognition by tested bacteria and Hela cells is described.

Reversible water activation driven by contraction and expansion of a 12-vertex-closo-12-vertex-nido biscarborane cluster

The metal-free reversible activation of H–OH bonds of water driven by the rearrangement of a boron cluster is presented.
