Regio- and Stereoselective Construction of Highly Functionalized 3-Benzazepine Skeletons through Ring-Opening Cycloamination Reactions Catalyzed by Gold

Relay Zn(ii)- and Au(i)-catalyzed aziridination/cyclization/ring expansion sequence to form 3-benzazepine derivatives

The synthesis of 3H-benzo[d]azepine-2-carboxylates from 2-alkynylphenyl aldimines and α-diazo esters using Zn(ii) and Au(i) catalysts is described.

Regio- and Diastereoselective Construction of Functionalized Benzo[b]oxepines and Benzo[b]azepines via Recyclable Gold(I)-Catalyzed Cyclizations

The heterogeneous gold-catalyzed cyclization of (o-alkynyl)phenoxy- or N-(o-alkynylphenyl)tolylsulfonamidoacrylates with alcohols has been developed by using an MCM-41-anchored diphenylphosphine-Au(I) complex [MCM-41-Ph₂P-AuNTf₂] as the catalyst under mild reaction conditions, yielding diverse functionalized benzo[b]oxepines or benzo[b]azepines with good to high yields and excellent diastereoselectivity. This heterogenized gold(I) catalyst exhibits a comparable activity to homogeneous Ph₃PAuNTf₂ and can be facilely recovered by a simple filtration of the reaction solution and reused more than seven times with almost a consistent catalytic efficiency.

3-Arylaziridine-2-carboxylic Acid Derivatives and (3-Arylaziridin-2-yl)ketones: The Aziridination Approaches

Aziridination reactions represent a powerful tool in aziridine synthesis. Significant progress has been achieved in this field in the last decades, whereas highly functionalized aziridines including 3-arylated aziridine-2-carbonyl compounds play an important role in both medical and synthetic chemistry. For the reasons listed, in the current review we have focused on the ways to obtain 3-arylated aziridines and on the recent advances (mainly since the year 2000) in the methodology of the synthesis of these compounds via aziridination.

Gold(I)-Catalyzed Cyclization-3-Aza-Cope-Mannich Cascade and Its Application to the Synthesis of Cephalotaxine

The discovery of a new gold(I)-catalyzed cascade reaction involving cyclization onto a vinylammonium, 3-aza-Cope rearrangement, and Mannich cyclization is reported. A variety of fused nitrogen heterocycles were prepared from simple cyclic tertiary amines using 1-5 mol % of a AuCl(PPh₃)/Ag[C₅(CN)₅] cocatalyst system. The developed reaction was used in a study aimed at synthesizing cephalotaxine. A five-step operation from norhydrastinine provided demethylcephalotaxinone in 39.1% overall yield, which was transformed to (-)-cephalotaxine in two steps.

Ring Expansion and Skeletal Rearrangement of Propargyl Alcohol Substituted Aziridines Induced by Ruthenium Complexes

The ring expansion and skeletal rearrangement of two types of propargyl alcohol substituted aziridines with or without cycloalkane moieties was induced by a ruthenium cyclopentadienyl phosphine complex. In the simple aziridine system with no cycloalkane, the unique cycloisomerization process altered the absolute connectivity of the two-carbon unit in the three-membered ring to give organometallic products with substituted pyridine or dihydropyridine ligands. For the aziridine on a cyclohexyl ring, the cycloisomerization process was controlled by an interchange process between vinylidene and allenylidene species, thus creating a better relative configuration of the aziridinyl and the alkynyl units. This determines the stereochemistry of the metal carbene products of the octahydroindole derivatives. The structures of five products were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis.

Ring enlargement reaction of C,N-cyclic-N'-acyl azomethine imines with sulfonium ylide: an efficient synthesis of 3-benzazepine derivatives

Highly efficient formation of 3-benzazepine derivatives has been achieved, based on the ring expansion reaction of C,N-cyclic-N'-acyl azomethine imines with sulfonium ylide generated in situ from the corresponding sulfonium salt. The reactions proceeded smoothly to afford the tricyclic 3-benzazepine derivatives in good to high yields. A wide range of C,N-cyclic N'-acyl azomethine imines were applicable to this reaction.

Synthetic route to chiral indolines via ring-opening/C-N cyclization of activated 2-haloarylaziridines

A practical approach for the synthesis of 3-substituted indolines via regio- and stereoselective SN2-type ring-opening of 2-(2-halophenyl)-N-tosylaziridines with heteroatomic nucleophiles (O, N, and S) followed by palladium-catalyzed intramolecular C-N cyclization is reported in excellent yields (up to >99%) and enantiomeric excess (ee 99%).

Strained small rings in gold-catalyzed rapid chemical transformations

Gold-catalyzed reactions, which have been widely explored over the past several years, are powerful tools in organic synthesis to access complex molecular frameworks, and some corresponding excellent reviews have been reported. However, little attention has been paid to summarize the reactions of strained small-ring-containing molecules catalyzed by gold. This critical review mainly puts its emphasis on the recent progress in the field of gold-catalyzed transformations of cyclopropyl-, cyclopropenyl-, epoxy- and aziridinyl-containing molecules. The rapid construction of interesting building blocks in organic synthesis from strained small rings catalyzed by gold has been summarized in this review (106 references).

Synthetic route to chiral tetrahydroquinoxalines via ring-opening of activated aziridines

A highly regio- and stereoselective route for the synthesis of racemic and nonracemic tetrahydroquinoxalines via the S(N)2-type ring-opening of activated aziridines with 2-bromoanilines followed by the Pd-catalyzed intramolecular C-N bond formation is described.
