Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons consisting of two or three rubicene substructures were designed as π-conjugated compounds embedding five-membered rings. The target compounds with t-butyl groups were synthesized by the Scholl reaction of precursors consisting of 9,10-diphenylanthracene units, even though a partially precyclized precursor was required for the synthesis of the trimer. These compounds were isolated as stable and dark blue solids. Single-crystal X-ray analysis and DFT calculations revealed the planar aromatic framework of these compounds. In the electronic spectra, the absorption and emission bands were considerably red-shifted compared with those of the reference rubicene compound. In particular, the emission band of the trimer extended to the near-IR region while retaining the emissive property. The narrowed HOMO-LUMO gap with the extension of the π-conjugation was confirmed by cyclic voltammetry and DFT calculations.

Abstract
A novel Pd-catalyzed cascade reaction of N,N-dialkyl-substituted o-alkynylanilines involving an indolization/peri-C-H annulation/N-dealkylation sequence has been developed to construct a cyclopenta-fused acenaphtho[1,2-b]indole (ANI) scaffold. A variety of aromatic hydrocarbons having a peri-C-H bond at the alkynyl terminus, such as naphthalene, phenanthrene, pyrene, and fluoranthene, were employed, affording the corresponding π-extended ANI derivatives. The ANI molecules showed relatively narrow energy gaps by increasing HOMOs and lowering LUMOs, implying their potential applications as π-segments in low-band-gap materials.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of a new class of cyclopenta-fused polyaromatic hydrocarbon (CP-PAH) incorporating fused benzodithiophene subunits. These CP-PAHs were prepared utilizing a two-step process involving a palladium catalyzed cyclopentannulation followed by a Scholl cyclodehydrogenation. This work broadens the scope of annulation chemistry by employing 1,2-bis(5-hexylthiophen-3-yl)ethyne and dibromoaryl derivatives based on anthracene, pyrene, and perylene to give 4,4',4'',4'''-(cyclopenta[hi]aceanthrylene-1,2,6,7-tetrayl)tetrakis(2-hexylthiophene), 4,4',4'',4'''-(dicyclopenta[cd,jk]pyrene-1,2,6,7-tetrayl)tetrakis(2-hexylthiophene), and 1,2,7,8-tetrakis(5-hexylthiophen-3-yl)-1,2,7,8-tetrahydrodicyclopenta[cd,lm]perylene. Scholl cyclodehydrogenation of the pendant thiophene units provided access to the π-extended polyaromatic systems 2,5,11,14-tetrahexylrubiceno[5,4-b:6,7-b':12,11-b'':13,14-b''']tetrathiophene, 2,5,11,14-tetrahexyldithieno-[4,5:6,7]indeno[1,2,3-cd]dithieno[4,5:6,7]indeno-[1,2,3-jk]pyrenes, and 2,9,12,19-tetrahexyldithieno[4,5:6,7]indaceno[1,2,3-cd]dithieno[4,5:6,7]indaceno[1,2,3-lm]perylene that possess helicene-like fragments. The anthracene-based CP-PAH was contorted owing to [5]helicene-like arrangements, while the pyrene- and perylene-based systems were essentially planar. The fully conjugated small molecules give low optical gaps (1.7-2.1 eV) with broad light absorption. The HOMO and LUMO energies of the CP-PAHs were found to be in the range of -5.48 to -5.05 eV and -3.48 to -3.14 eV, respectively. Finally, the anthracene-based CP-PAH was found to be a p-type semiconductor when tested in an organic field effect transistor.

Abstract
Ruthenium-catalyzed butadiene-mediated benzannulation enabled the first synthesis of 3,10-(di-tert-butyl)rubicene and its N-doped derivatives as well as preliminary studies on their photophysical properties. Unlike the parent rubicene and 3,10-(di-tert-butyl)rubicene, which adopt classical herringbone-type packing motifs in the solid state, the N-doped congener 7 b displayed columnar packing with an alternating co-facial arrangement of aromatic and heteroaromatic substructures.

Abstract
C-H functionalization is one of the most convenient and powerful tools in the arsenal of modern chemistry, deservedly nominated as the "Holy Grail" of organic synthesis. A frequent disadvantage of this method is the need for harsh reaction conditions to carry out transformations of inert C-H bonds, which limits the possibility of its use for modifying less stable substrates. Biomass-derived furan platform chemicals, which have a relatively unstable aromatic furan core and highly reactive side chain substituents, are extremely promising and valuable organic molecules that are currently widely used in a variety of research and industrial fields. The high sensitivity of furan derivatives to acids, strong oxidants, and high temperatures significantly limits the use of classical methods of C-H functionalization for their modification. New methods of catalytic functionalization of non-reactive furan cores are urgently required to obtain a new generation of materials with controlled properties and potentially bioactive substances.

Abstract
Cyclopenta[hi]aceanthrylenes (CPAs) have been functionalized at two of the peripheral positions with electronically inert trimethylsilylethynyl (1), as well as with electron-donating 4-ethynyl-N,N-dimethylaniline (2), ethynyl ZnII phthalocyanine (3), and ethynyl ZnII porphyrin (4) units. Consistent with X-ray crystal structures of 2 and 4, analyses of absorption and fluorescence of 2-4 point to strong electronic communication between the CPA and the peripheral units, affording quadrupolar electron donor-acceptor-donor charge-transfer conjugates. By virtue of their quadrupolar/dipolar charge-transfer characters in the excited state, 2-4 exhibit fluoro-solvatochromism. Transient absorption spectroscopy confirmed delocalized quadrupolar ground states and formation of weakly solvent stabilized quadrupolar singlet excited states. The latter transform into strongly stabilized dipolar excited states before deactivating to the ground state in 2 and give rise to a fully charge separated state in 3 and 4.

Abstract
We herein report an efficient synthesis of dibenzo[a,m]rubicene, a new member of nonplanar cyclopenta-fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, and its derivatives. It is found that the conformation and molecular packing of dibenzo[a,m]rubicenes in the solid state can be tuned by the substituting groups, and the silylethynylated derivatives of dibenzo[a,m]rubicenes function as p-type organic semiconductors in solution-processed thin film transistors with field effect mobility of up to 1.0 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1).

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of four fully-conjugated indacenedithiophenes (IDTs) are disclosed. In contrast to anthradithiophenes, regioselective synthesis of both syn and anti isomers is readily achieved. Thiophene fusion imparts increased paratropic character on the central indacene core as predicted by DFT calculations and confirmed by 1H NMR spectroscopy. IDTs exhibit red-shifted absorbance maxima with respect to their all-carbon analogues and undergo two-electron reduction and one-electron oxidation.

Abstract
We report the synthesis and selective functionalization of two externally fused cyclopenta-fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (CP-PAHs) and demonstrate their electron accepting behavior. 2,7-Bis(trimethylsilyl)cyclopenta[hi]aceanthrylene (1) and 2,8-bis(trimethylsilyl)dicyclopenta[de,mn]tetracene (4) were prepared in a one-pot, palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling of (trimethylsilyl)acetylene and either 9,10-dibromoanthracene or 5,11-dibromotetracene, respectively. The trimethylsilyl groups were selectively converted into bromides via substitution with N-bromosuccinimide to create universal partners (2 and 6) for metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. To demonstrate the utility of the halogenated CP-PAHs, we successfully employed a Sonogashira cross-coupling between the CP-PAHs and a phenylacetylene derivative. The resulting compounds (3 and 7) were found to be highly conjugated between the CP-PAH core and the substituents, as demonstrated by large bathochromic shifts in the absorption spectra as well as density functional theory calculations. Ethynylated CP-PAHs 3 and 7 were found to possess low optical bandgaps (1.52 and 1.51 eV, respectively) and displayed two reversible reductions. We further demonstrated the fullerene-like electron-accepting behavior of 3 through solution-phase fluorescence quenching of the prototypical electron donor, poly(3-hexylthiophene).

Abstract
Solution-processable derivatives 4a–d of the novel diindeno[1,2-g:1′,2′-s]rubicene ring system have been prepared in three steps from 1,5-dichloroanthraquinone. Charge extraction by linearly increasing voltage measurements indicates that 4a–d have bulk mobilities <10–7 cm2 V–1 s–1. Consistent with these low mobility values, field-effect transistors fabricated from 4a–d show poor performance. X-ray crystallographic analyses indicate that in the crystalline state, molecules of compounds 4b–d pack in a manner that hinders π–π stacking, thus preventing strong electronic coupling between molecules that is essential for high charge mobility semiconductor performance.
