Lanthanide-containing photoluminescent materials: from hybrid hydrogel to inorganic nanotubes

Fabrication of Luminescent Triple-Cross-Linked Gelatin/Alginate Hydrogels through Freezing-Drying-Swelling and Freezing-Thawing Processes

Lanthanide-containing luminescent hydrogels have shown potential for sensing and imaging applications. Nonetheless, integrating lanthanide ions or complexes into the polymer matrix often results in the poor stability and mechanical strength of the hydrogels. This work presents an innovative approach to fabricating luminescent hydrogels with three dynamic cross-links: imine bond, boronate ester bond, and metal-ligand coordination. Europium(III) (Eu3+) ions are incorporated into a dual-cross-linked matrix composed of phenylboronic acid-polyethylenimine-modified gelatin (PPG) and alginate dialdehyde (ADA) through a combined treatment involving freeze-drying-swelling (FDS) and freeze-thawing (FT) processes. The FDS process facilitates the formation of additional europium-carboxylate cross-links within the polymeric network to enhance its luminescence and stability, while the FT process strengthens the network physically. The impact of the FDS-FT cycle number on the microstructures and properties of PPG/ADA-Eu3+ hydrogels is thoroughly investigated, and their potential for monitoring bacterial growth and detecting copper(II) ions is also demonstrated.

Self-assembly of bile salts and their mixed aggregates as building blocks for smart aggregates

The present communication offers a comprehensive overview of the self-assembly of bile salts emphasizing their mixed smart aggregates with a variety of amphiphiles. Using an updated literature survey, we have explored the dissimilar interactions of bile salts with different types of surfactants, phospholipids, ionic liquids, drugs, and a variety of natural and synthetic polymers. While assembling this review, special attention was also provided to the potency of bile salts to alter the size/shape of aggregates formed by several amphiphiles to use these aggregates for solubility improvement of medicinally important compounds, active pharmaceutical ingredients, and also to develop their smart delivery vehicles. A fundamental understanding of bile salt mixed aggregates will enable the development of new strategies for improving the bioavailability of drugs solubilized in newly developed potential hosts and to formulate smart aggregates of desired morphology for specific targeted applications. It enriches our existing knowledge of the distinct interactions exerted in mixed systems of bile salts with variety of amphiphiles. By virtue of this, researchers can get innovative ideas to construct novel nanoaggregates from bile salts by incorporating various amphiphiles that serve as a building block for smart aggregates for their numerous industrial applications.

Rare-Earth Doping in Nanostructured Inorganic Materials

Impurity doping is a promising method to impart new properties to various materials. Due to their unique optical, magnetic, and electrical properties, rare-earth ions have been extensively explored as active dopants in inorganic crystal lattices since the 18th century. Rare-earth doping can alter the crystallographic phase, morphology, and size, leading to tunable optical responses of doped nanomaterials. Moreover, rare-earth doping can control the ultimate electronic and catalytic performance of doped nanomaterials in a tunable and scalable manner, enabling significant improvements in energy harvesting and conversion. A better understanding of the critical role of rare-earth doping is a prerequisite for the development of an extensive repertoire of functional nanomaterials for practical applications. In this review, we highlight recent advances in rare-earth doping in inorganic nanomaterials and the associated applications in many fields. This review covers the key criteria for rare-earth doping, including basic electronic structures, lattice environments, and doping strategies, as well as fundamental design principles that enhance the electrical, optical, catalytic, and magnetic properties of the material. We also discuss future research directions and challenges in controlling rare-earth doping for new applications.

Self-assembled luminescent cholate gels induced by a europium ion in deep eutectic solvents

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) with excellent physicochemical properties similar to ionic liquids and biocompatibility are potential solvent candidates for designing novel lanthanide luminescent soft materials. In this paper, the fabrication and characterization of such luminescent gels in three choline chloride (ChCl)-based DESs through self-assembly of the sodium cholate and europium nitrate are presented. The microstructure and gel-like nature of the obtained eutectogels were explored and confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and rheology measurements. While Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering were used to analyze the gel formation mechanism, which was considered to be synergistically driven by metal coordination, hydrogen bonding and solvophobic interactions. All three eutectogels exhibited good photophysical properties. Among these, the one formed in ChCl/urea DES was found to possess the strongest mechanical strength. While the one formed in ChCl/glycerol DES exhibited the longest luminescence lifetime and quantum efficiency. The obtained results demonstrate the possibility of using DESs to construct lanthanide luminescent soft materials or control their properties through the choice of hydrogen-bond donor molecules.

Physiology and Physical Chemistry of Bile Acids

Bile acids (BAs) are facial amphiphiles synthesized in the body of all vertebrates. They undergo the enterohepatic circulation: they are produced in the liver, stored in the gallbladder, released in the intestine, taken into the bloodstream and lastly re-absorbed in the liver. During this pathway, BAs are modified in their molecular structure by the action of enzymes and bacteria. Such transformations allow them to acquire the chemical-physical properties needed for fulling several activities including metabolic regulation, antimicrobial functions and solubilization of lipids in digestion. The versatility of BAs in the physiological functions has inspired their use in many bio-applications, making them important tools for active molecule delivery, metabolic disease treatments and emulsification processes in food and drug industries. Moreover, moving over the borders of the biological field, BAs have been largely investigated as building blocks for the construction of supramolecular aggregates having peculiar structural, mechanical, chemical and optical properties. The review starts with a biological analysis of the BAs functions before progressively switching to a general overview of BAs in pharmacology and medicine applications. Lastly the focus moves to the BAs use in material science.

Stimulus-responsive luminescent hydrogels: Design and applications

Luminescent hydrogels are emerging soft materials with applications in photoelectric, biomedicine, sensors and actuators, which are fabricated via covalently conjugation of luminophors to hydrogelators or physical loading of luminescent organic/inorganic materials into hydrogel matrices. Due to the intrinsic stimulus-responsiveness for hydrogels such as thermo-, pH, ionic strength, light and redox, luminescent hydrogels could respond to external physical or chemical stimuli through varying the luminescent properties such as colors, fluorescent intensity and so on, affording diverse application potential in addition to the pristine individual hydrogels or luminescent materials. Based on the rapid development of such area, here we systematically summarize and discuss the design protocols, properties as well as the applications of stimulus-responsive luminescent hydrogels. Because of the stimuli-responsiveness, biocompatibility, injectable and controllability of luminescent hydrogels, they are widely used as functional smart materials. We illustrate the applications of luminescent hydrogels. The future developments about luminescent hydrogels are also presented.

An innovative strategy for synchronous treatment of combined heavy metal and organic pollutants through polysaccharide gel encapsulating S2

In many industrial fields, treatment of composite contaminations involving inorganic heavy metal ions and organic pollutants simultaneously remains a tremendous challenge. In this paper, an innovative strategy based on the gelation process of Sodium Alginate (SA) was proposed for synchronous treatment of composite pollutants. Through a pre-gelation step, SA gel balls encapsulated with S^2- (SA/S^2- gel) were formed and immersed into polluted solutions containing Pb²⁺/Cd²⁺ and Cd²⁺/dye. The removal efficiency of Pb²⁺/Cd²⁺ by SA/S^2- gel were both increased compared with pure SA gel. The adsorbed Pb²⁺/Cd²⁺ was in-situ transformed into PbS/CdS quantum dots (QDs) possessing photo-catalytic activity, which induced the degradation of dyes under UV irradiation. In this respect, the proposed SA/S^2- system might provide a high-performance and energy-saving way for comprehensive treatment of inorganic heavy metal and organic industrial pollutants.

Steroidal supramolecular metallogels combine the properties of steroids with metal ions resulting in multi-responsive systems possessing many potential applications.

Bile Salts: Natural Surfactants and Precursors of a Broad Family of Complex Amphiphiles

Bile salts (BSs) are naturally occurring rigid surfactants with a steroidal skeleton and specific self-assembly and interface behaviors. Using bile salts as precursors, derivatives can be synthesized to obtain molecules with specific functionalities and amphiphilic structure. Modifications on single molecules are normally performed by substituting the least-hindered hydroxyl group on carbon C-3 of the steroidal A ring or at the end of the lateral chain. This leads to monosteroidal rigid building blocks that are often able to self-organize into 1D structures such as tubules, twisted ribbons, and fibrils with helical supramolecular packing. Tubular aggregates are of particular interest, and they are characterized by cross-section inner diameters spanning a wide range of values (3-500 nm). They can form through appealing pH- or temperature-responsive aggregation and in mixtures of bile salt derivatives to provide mixed tubules with tunable charge and size. Other derivatives can be prepared by covalently linking two or more bile salt molecules to provide complex systems such as oligomers, dendrimers, and polymeric materials. The unconventional amphiphilic molecular structure imparts specific features to BSs and derivatives that can be exploited in the formulation of capsules, drug carriers, dispersants, and templates for the synthesis of nanomaterials.

Preparing CdS QDs in sodium alginate gel: realizing water solubility and stimuli responsiveness of QDs in an integrative way

Quantum dots (QDs) are of great interest due to their excellent fluorescence properties and thus, they have been widely studied. Compared with the typical organometallic synthetic routes and hydrothermal methods usually carried out under high temperatures, methods employing colloidal templates can be used for preparing QDs in mild conditions and have gained increasing attention. In this prospect, a hydrogel is an ideal colloidal template for the preparation of QDs in an aqueous medium, while the related study for in situ preparation of QDs in a gel and the consequent functionalization of QDs are in demand. In this paper, we proposed a two-step method to prepare CdS QDs in a sodium alginate (SA) gel, which showed effective constraint in the uniform size distribution of QDs. Without the introduction of additional ligands, the prepared CdS-SA QDs exhibited responsiveness to pH and detection of Fe3+, thus providing a simplified way for the functionalization of QDs. CdS-SA QDs showed good biocompatibility and stability in a certain concentration, which indicated the prospective applications of CdS-SA QDs in the fields of biological labeling and environmental sensing.

Luminescent Sodium Deoxycholate Ionogel Induced by Eu3+ in Ethylammonium Nitrate

Hydrogels based on bile salts and lanthanide ions have been reported for their easy gelation. However, the weak mechanical properties and water quenching to luminescence of lanthanide ions limit their applications in practice. Hence, a supramolecular ionogel has been prepared here through simply mixing of sodium deoxycholate and europium nitrate in a protic ionic liquid, ethylammonium nitrate (EAN). The prepared ionogel was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, fluorescence spectroscopy, and rheological measurements. Such an ionogel resulted synergistically from metal coordination and hydrogen bonding. The effect of the solvent structure on gel properties was also explored by comparison with those formed in alkylammonium nitrates with longer chains. EAN was found to behave more effectively both as a solvent and a bridge to enhance the ionogel mechanical strength. The ionogels also exhibited better fluorescent properties than those of the corresponding hydrogels. The obtained results should expand the applications of lanthanide-containing luminescent soft materials in nonaqueous media. It is expected to apply in the fields of solid electrolytes, biosensors, and optics response.

A La3+-selective metallohydrogel with a facile gelator of a phenylalanine derivative containing an imidazole group

The first La3+-selective metallohydrogel was constructed by using a facile gelator of a phenylalanine derivative containing an imidazole group, N-(1H-imidazol-4-yl)methylidene-l-phenylalanine, namely La-ImF, which exhibits multi-stimuli responsive properties, including to heat, shearing, pH, etc. Various measurements were also carried out to obtain insights into the mechanism of gelation. Moreover, the La-ImF hydrogel can adsorb toxic dyes, making it a potential candidate for sewage treatment.

Coassembly of Mixed Weakley-Type Polyoxometalates to Novel Nanoflowers with Tunable Fluorescence for the Detection of Toluene

In this work, three-dimensional nanoflowers with tunable fluorescent properties constructed with mixed Weakley-type polyoxometalates (POMs, Na₉[LnW₁₀O₃₆]·32H₂O, Ln = Eu, Tb, abbreviated to LnW₁₀) and tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) have been successfully prepared through a facile ionic self-assembly (ISA) method. The shape and petal size of the nanoflower as well as its fluorescent behaviors can be tuned through varying the ratio of EuW₁₀/TbW₁₀. The varied-temperature emission behaviors at 80-260 K show that the fluorescent intensity of both Tb³⁺ and Eu³⁺ decreased with the increase in temperature, which makes them potential luminescent ratiometric thermometers. Moreover, after being mixed with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), the as-formed hybrid films showed stable fluorescence along with good transparency. The robustness of the hybrid films was also demonstrated by corrosion resistance upon treatment with strong acid and alkali and thus can be used as a sensor to detect toluene circularly. Our results provide a new avenue to the facile construction of fluorescent composites and demonstrate that the POM complexes can be further used in supramolecular chemistry and nanomaterials.

Cation instructed steroidal prodrug supramolecular hydrogel

In the present study, we propose an ionic coordination strategy for the design of a steroidal prodrug supramolecular hydrogel. The hydrogel composed of nanofibril networks formed spontaneously by the introduction of divalent cations (e.g., Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, Zn²⁺ and Fe²⁺) and NH₄⁺ to a succinated dexamethasone (Dex-SA) aqueous solution at room temperature. The formation of the nanofibril structure was dominantly driven by the ionic coordination with the assistance of a delicate balance of multiple noncovalent interactions. A rheological analysis indicated that the formed Ca²⁺/Dex-SA supramolecular hydrogel exhibits dominant elastic and thixotropic properties. The formed Ca²⁺/Dex-SA supramolecular hydrogel allowed the gradual release of Dex and Dex-SA in vitro, and the drug release behaviour can be finely tuned by changing the Ca²⁺ concentration. Storage stability studies showed that Dex-SA in hydrogel underwent an apparent chemical decomposition at 4 °C and 37 °C. In contrast, the Dex-SA xerogel was quite stable without any obvious chemical decomposition of Dex-SA in storage at -20 °C for 35 days, and it was able to turn into a hydrogel again within one minute after rehydration. The formed Ca²⁺/Dex-SA supramolecular hydrogel caused negligible cytotoxicity against HCEC and L-929 cells at drug concentrations up to 2 mM, as indicated by the in vitro cytotoxicity tests. Additionally, the proposed Ca²⁺/Dex-SA supramolecular hydrogel displayed a comparable anti-inflammatory efficacy with Dexp via the downregulation of NO, TNF-α and IL-6 expression in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated RAW264.7 macrophage. Overall, the cation instructed steroidal prodrug supramolecular hydrogel might be a promising ophthalmic drug delivery system for anti-inflammatory therapy.

Effects of polymers on the properties of hydrogels constructed using sodium deoxycholate and amino acid

Polymer can participate in the formation of hydrogel network structure and provide a lot of binding sites, leading to an enhancement of the mechanical strength of the hydrogels.

Hierarchical Nanostructures Self-Assembled by Polyoxometalate and Alkylamine for Photocatalytic Degradation of Dye

A novel simple strategy for alkylamine-directed self-assembly of Weakley-type polyoxometalate (POM, Na₉[EuW₁₀O₃₆]·32H₂O, abbreviated to EuW₁₀) to form three-dimensional nanoflowers has been successfully developed through the ionic self-assembly (ISA) method. For comparison, different molecular weights of alkylamines including diethylenetriamine, triethylenetetramine, and tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) were selected to construct hierarchical nanostructures. Our results revealed that the morphologies and sizes of the nanostructures could be simply controlled by varying the molecular weights and concentrations of alkylamines. The fluorescent color of EuW₁₀/TEPA nanoflowers changed compared with that of EuW₁₀ owing to the varied symmetry degree of europium coordination in EuW₁₀/TEPA nanoflowers. It is demonstrated that this effective self-assembly occurs mainly though the hydrogen bond and electrostatic interaction between EuW₁₀ and TEPA. What's more, the EuW₁₀/TEPA nanoflowers after calcining showed excellent decomposition efficiency toward methylene blue dyes. Our results further confirmed that ISA method between small molecules and POM can provide a unique "bottom-up" strategy to construct novel structures with functional properties.

A thermo-responsive supramolecular gel and its luminescence enhancement induced by rare earth Y3

A new acylhydrazone-functionalized dual benzimidazole derivative gelator (L) was synthesized. L can self-assemble in DMSO-EG (ethylene glycol) or DMF-water mixtures to form a thermo-responsive supramolecular organogel (L-gel). In order to increase the fluorescence intensity of L-gel (DMSO-EG system), L-gel slowly turned into a clear solution upon addition of one equivalent of RE (rare earth) Y³⁺. Interestingly, this gelator L and Y³⁺ can be assembled into an enhanced blue-light-emitting supramolecular metallogel (Y@gel) in DMF-water mixtures.

Metallogels of indium(iii) with bile salts: soft materials for nanostructured In2S3 synthesis

Metallo-hydrogels were formed from sodium cholate and deoxycholate in the presence of indium(iii). This soft hydrogel was used for nanostructured In₂S₃ synthesis.

Synthesis and investigation of a self-assembled hydrogel based on hydroxyethyl cellulose and its in vitro ibuprofen drug release characteristics

IBU is solubilized and encapsulated by β-CDP. Then C₁₂ side-chain grafting onto HEC forms inclusion complexes with the cavities of β-CDP in β-CDP/IBU through host–guest interactions to form a new self-assembled hydrogel gel-(β)CDP-HEC/IBU.

General Approach To Construct Photoresponsive Self-Assembly in a Light-Inert Amphiphilic System

The ability to modulate amphiphilic aggregation reversibly with external stimuli, especially using light as a trigger, is of great importance. This has greatly contributed to the development of applications using self-assembly. However, most previously described systems are based on a specific molecular design and have shown difficultly in their application to light-inert aggregation. Here, we developed a general and effective approach to control the morphology of amphiphilic aggregates by light, which is suitable for different assemblies such as micelles, vesicles, and helixes. Our strategy is to construct a photoresponsive factor into light-inert self-assemblies. On the basis of the different capabilities to form host-guest inclusions between photoresponsive azobenzene sodium and light-inert molecules with cyclodextrin, the transformation of the corresponding amphiphilic aggregation can be controlled easily and reversibly by light stimuli. Not only the nanostructure of the aggregates but also the phase behavior, such as gel formation, can be modulated upon light irradiation using this method.

Ionic Self-Assembly of a Giant Vesicle as a Smart Microcarrier and Microreactor

Giant vesicles (1-10 μm) were constructed via a facile ionic self-assembly (ISA) strategy using an anionic dye Acid Orange II (AO) and an oppositely charged ionic-liquid-type cationic surfactant 1-tetradecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (C14mimBr). This is the first report about preparing giant vesicles through ISA strategy. Interestingly, the giant vesicle could keep the original morphology during the evaporation of solvent and displayed solid-like properties at low concentration. Moreover, giant vesicles with large internal capacity volume and good stability in solution could also be achieved by increasing the concentrations of AO and C14mimBr which contributed to the increase of the other noncovalent cooperative interactions. In order to facilitate comparison, a series of parallel experiments with similar materials were carried out to investigate and verify the driving forces for the formation of these kinds of giant vesicles by changing the hydrophobic moieties or the head groups of the surfactants. It is concluded that the electrostatic interaction, hydrophobic effect and π-π stacking interaction play key roles in this self-assembly process. Importantly, the giant vesicles can act as a smart microcarrier to load and release carbon quantum dot (CQD) under control. Besides, the giant vesicles could also be applied as a microrector to synthesize monodispersed Ag nanoparticles with diameter of about 5-10 nm which exhibited the ability to catalyze reduction of 4-nitroaniline. Therefore, it is indicated that our AO/C14mimBr assemblies hold promising applications in the areas of microencapsulation, catalyst support, and lightweight composites owing to their huge sizes and large microcavities.

Electrospun Poly(acrylic acid)/Silica Hydrogel Nanofibers Scaffold for Highly Efficient Adsorption of Lanthanide Ions and Its Photoluminescence Performance

Combined with the features of electrospun nanofibers and the nature of hydrogel, a novel choreographed poly(acrylic acid)-silica hydrogel nanofibers (PAA-S HNFs) scaffold with excellent rare earth elements (REEs) recovery performance was fabricated by a facile route consisting of colloid-electrospinning of PAA/SiO2 precursor solution, moderate thermal cross-linking of PAA-S nanofiber matrix, and full swelling in water. The resultant PAA-S HNFs with a loose and spongy porous network structure exhibited a remarkable adsorption capacity of lanthanide ions (Ln(3+)) triggered by the penetration of Ln(3+) from the nanofiber surface to interior through the abundant water channels, which took full advantage of the internal adsorption sites of nanofibers. The effects of initial solution pH, concentration, and contact time on adsorption of Ln(3+) have been investigated comprehensively. The maximum equilibrium adsorption capacities for La(3+), Eu(3+), and Tb(3+) were 232.6, 268.8, and 250.0 mg/g, respectively, at pH 6, and the adsorption data were well-fitted to the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order models. The resultant PAA-S HNFs scaffolds could be regenerated successfully. Furthermore, the proposed adsorption mechanism of Ln(3+) on PAA-S HNFs scaffolds was the formation of bidentate carboxylates between carboxyl groups and Ln(3+) confirmed by FT-IR and XPS analysis. The well-designed PAA-S HNFs scaffold can be used as a promising alternative for effective REEs recovery. Moreover, benefiting from the unique features of Ln(3+), the Ln-PAA-S HNFs simultaneously exhibited versatile advantages including good photoluminescent performance, tunable emission color, and excellent flexibility and processability, which also hold great potential for applications in luminescent patterning, underwater fluorescent devices, sensors, and biomaterials, among others.

Two Gelation Mechanisms of Deoxycholate with Inorganic Additives: Hydrogen Bonding and Electrostatic Interactions

This work describes the gelation behaviors of a biological amphiphile, deoxycholate (DC(-)), in aqueous solution by adding inorganic salts and modulating pH. Electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding can separately act as the controlling interaction for the hydrogel formation. The hydrogels formed at higher pH (about 8.5) through introducing monovalent inorganic cations (Na(+)) are mainly driven by electrostatic interaction between deoxycholate species and Na(+) ions. When pH is decreased, with the formation of DCA molecules, hydrogen bonding between DC(-) and DCA come into being another leading role to construct the hydrogels, which can induce the gels within an appropriate pH region (6.7-7.3) without inorganic cations. Gels constructed through the self-assembly of deoxycholate present diverse properties according to the difference in the main driving force. Moreover, the combination of the two important interactions can significantly enhance the gelation ability.

Hydrogelation and Crystallization of Sodium Deoxycholate Controlled by Organic Acids

The gelation and crystallization behavior of a biological surfactant, sodium deoxycholate (NaDC), mixed with l-taric acid (L-TA) in water is described in detail. With the variation of molar ratio of L-TA to NaDC (r = n(L-TA)/n(NaDC)) and total concentration of the mixtures, the transition from sol to gel was observed. SEM images showed that the density of nanofibers gradually increases over the sol-gel transition. The microstructures of the hydrogels are three-dimensional networks of densely packed nanofibers with lengths extending to several micrometers. One week after preparation, regular crystallized nanospheres formed along the length of the nanofibers, and it was typical among the transparent hydrogels induced by organic acids with pKa1 value <3.4. Small-angle X-ray diffraction demonstrated differences in the molecular packing between transparent and turbid gels, indicating a variable hydrogen bond mode between NaDC molecules.

Synthesis and investigation of a novel luminous hydrogel

An Eu-containing luminous hydrogel was synthesized by free radical copolymerization and ester hydrolysis. The hydrogel exhibits strong red fluorescence, excellent thermal stability and superhydrophilicity.

Supramolecular Hydrogelators and Hydrogels: From Soft Matter to Molecular Biomaterials

In this review we intend to provide a relatively comprehensive summary of the work of supramolecular hydrogelators after 2004 and to put emphasis particularly on the applications of supramolecular hydrogels/hydrogelators as molecular biomaterials. After a brief introduction of methods for generating supramolecular hydrogels, we discuss supramolecular hydrogelators on the basis of their categories, such as small organic molecules, coordination complexes, peptides, nucleobases, and saccharides. Following molecular design, we focus on various potential applications of supramolecular hydrogels as molecular biomaterials, classified by their applications in cell cultures, tissue engineering, cell behavior, imaging, and unique applications of hydrogelators. Particularly, we discuss the applications of supramolecular hydrogelators after they form supramolecular assemblies but prior to reaching the critical gelation concentration because this subject is less explored but may hold equally great promise for helping address fundamental questions about the mechanisms or the consequences of the self-assembly of molecules, including low molecular weight ones. Finally, we provide a perspective on supramolecular hydrogelators. We hope that this review will serve as an updated introduction and reference for researchers who are interested in exploring supramolecular hydrogelators as molecular biomaterials for addressing the societal needs at various frontiers.

Polymorphic transformation towards formation of nanotubes by self-assembly of an achiral molecule

In this paper, nanotubes with a uniform diameter were prepared by self-assembly of an achiral azobenzene-containing fatty acid. The polymorphic transformation of the assemblies during the cooling process was systematically studied. By controlling the incubation temperature, different morphologies, such as membranes, stripes, helical ribbons and tubes, were all obtained in our experiment. These elements were all predicted by Selinger et al. in the theoretical model of the formation of nanotubes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental example to fully support their theory.

Hydrogels Triggered by Metal Ions as Precursors of Network CuS for DNA Detection

The gelation behavior of lithocholate (LC(-) ) with different metal ions in water was investigated. The microstructures of hydrogels were determined to be three-dimensional (3D) networks of fibrous aggregates. The formation of fibrils was speculated to be mainly driven by the coordination between carboxylate of LC(-) and metal ions, accompanied by the assistance of noncovalent interactions such as electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions. The hydrogels, which can maintain the mechanical strength at higher temperature, exhibit thermal stability. Their gelation capability was enhanced with the increase in acidity. The hydrogels of LC(-) and Cu(2+) mixtures served as the precursors for producing network nanostructures of CuS nanoparticles. These new CuS networks exhibit high fluorescence quenching ability and can act as an effective fluorescent sensing platform for ssDNA detection.

Preparation and fluorescence properties of crystalline gel rare earth phosphates

An aqueous solution of sodium dihydrogen phosphate was mixed with a aqueous solution of lanthanum nitrate and stirred for 24 h, and the pH was adjusted to 11 using ammonia. The obtained phosphates were analyzed using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The lanthanum phosphate gel was obtained with a large amount of water. The fluorescence of the gels was investigated by substituting a part of the lanthanum cations with cerium, terbium, and europium cations. UV-vis reflectance and fluorescence spectra of these substituted materials were obtained and analyzed. Rrare-earth phosphate gels with large amounts of water exhibited bluish purple, green, and red fluorescence when cation ratios of La/Ce = 70/30, La/Ce/Tb = 55/30/15, and La/Eu = 95/5 were used, respectively.
