Abstract
A series of cyclometalated (N^C^N) Pt(II)-platinum complexes featuring a terpyridine ligand with a non-coordinating nitrogen atom and a Pt-C bond was synthesized. In the presence of Ag+, the bis(isonitrile)Pt(II) complex formed a remarkable self-assembled helicoidal dimer stabilized by coordination of Ag(I) and metallophilic Pt-Ag interactions. Its assembly was observed in the solid state and maintained in solution. All complexes show strong luminescence and multiple emitting states, which could be rationalized based on solid state X-ray structures and coordinating environment.

Abstract
Here, a cyclometalated Pt(II) clamshell dimer (complex 2) has been synthesized with the primary ligand of dibenzo(f,h)quinoxaline and an ancillary ligand of N,N'-diphenylformamidine. In addition, a mononuclear Pt(II) complex 1a and a binuclear Pt(II) complex 1b were also prepared. Complex 1a was coordinated by one cyclometalated ligand of dibenzo(f,h)quinoxaline, one chloride ion, and one N,N'-diphenylformamidine. Complex 1b was coordinated by one cyclometalated ligand of dibenzo(f,h)quinoxaline, two chloride ions, and two N,N'-diphenylformamidines. All of these three complexes were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), elemental analyses, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD). The Pt-Pt distance in complex 2 was 2.8439(2) Å. It also exhibited a near-infrared (near-IR) emission at 887 nm in the pure solid state. On the other hand, complexes 1a and 1b exhibited triplet emission at 589 and 660 nm, respectively, in the pure solid state. Furthermore, in 2 wt% poly(Me methacrylate) (PMMA) films, complex 1a showed a triplet emission at 548 nm (with Φ = 84% and τ = 5.53 μs) and complex 1b showed an emission at 627 nm (with Φ = 79% and τ = 4.07 μs). Due to its great photophysical properties, complex 1b was deposited onto quartz plates for the detection of organic solvent vapors and it showed unique emission quenching for the vapor of tetrahydrofuran.

Abstract
Tricyanidonitridorhenium(V) complexes with azolylpyridines, namely, [ReN(CN)3(H-N2py)]- (1-H, H-N2py = 2-(3-pyrazolyl)pyridine) and [ReN(CN)3(L)]2- (2-a, L = 2-[1,2,3]-triazol-4-yl-pyridine anion (N3py-), and 3-a, that is, L = 2-(tetrazol-5-yl)-pyridine anion (N4py-)), were newly synthesized and characterized. The structures of the new complexes were determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The 1-H complex includes two geometrical isomers in which an isomer is the conformation with the pyridyl (py) and pyrazolyl (pyrz) moieties of H-N2py occupying the trans site to the nitrido (the ax site) and the trans site to the cyanido (the eq site), respectively, in a bidentate fashion; the other isomer is the py and pyrz moieties coordinated to the eq and ax sites. In 2-a and 3-a, the triazolyl (trz) and tetrazoly (tetrz) moieties in N3py- and N4py- occupy the eq site, and the py moieties in N3py- and N4py- coordinate to the ax site. The complex 1-H is deprotonated upon the addition of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-one or NaOH to produce [ReN(CN)3(N2py)]2- (1-a), and 2-a is protonated upon the addition of p-toluene sulfonic acid (TsOH) to give [ReN(CN)3(H-N3py)]- (2-H) in DMSO. The protonation reaction does not occur for 3-a with TsOH in DMSO. All the complexes show one-electron redox waves of the Re(VI)/Re(V) and azolylpyridine ligand-centered processes in 0.1 M (n-C4H9)4NPF6-DMSO. All the complexes exhibit photoluminescence in DMSO and in the crystalline phase at 296 K. The emissive excited states of the complexes in DMSO were assigned to MLCT with a spin triplet nature. The emission band shifts to shorter and longer wavelengths upon protonation and deprotonation of the coordinated azolylpyridines, respectively. The emission color and intensity changes of 2-H and 2-a in the presence of acidic and basic vapors were investigated.

Abstract
Gas sensors based on organic molecules are attractive for their tailored molecular structures and controllable functions, but weak interfacial adhesion between sensing materials and supporting substrates has severely hampered their practical applications, particularly in harsh environments. Here, inspired by the combined anchoring-recognizing feature of natural olfactory systems, an adhesive-integrated-agent strategy to integrate the adhesive unit (poly(dimethylsiloxane)) with the sensing unit (organoplatinum(II)) into one chemistry entity, creating robust and sensitive nanobelt array gas sensors is demonstrated. Systematic theoretical and experimental studies reveal that incorporating adhesive units significantly enhances the interfacial adhesion of the array sensors and gas-bridged super-exchange electronic couplings of sensing units ensure their efficient gas-sensing performance. The high shear strength of ≈7.05 × 106 N m-2 allows these arrays to resist aggressive ultrasonication, tape peeling, or repeated bending without compromising their sensing performance. This molecular engineering strategy opens a new guideline to develop robust gas sensors.

Abstract
An in-depth study of the molecular rearrangement of the complex [Au(N9-adeninate)(PTA)] (1), promoted in aqueous solution, is presented. This complex, which has been previously described as forming dimers in its crystalline form, is also demonstrated as being able to assemble into an infinite AuI···AuI chain polymer. The structural motifs are tentatively related to the dramatic modification of the photoemissive properties of 1 in water solution at long times, with the aid of UV-vis and photoluminescence measurements, PGSE-NMR, and theoretical calculations. A subtle equilibrium in favor of aurophilically governed aggregates has been envisaged as the driving force of the molecular rearrangement. Furthermore, 1 has been explored as an additive of the hydrogel of [Au(N9-adeninate)(PMe3)] (2) for a further tuning of its photophysical properties without loss of the gel texture.

Abstract
A chloro-substituted boron-fused azomethine complex (BAmCl) having a stereogenic boron center was synthesized for obtaining a luminescent chiral crystal. We succeeded in isolating the (R)- and (S)-enantiomers of BAmCl and preparing the homochiral polymorphic crystal, while we obtained the racemic crystal with rac-BAmCl. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses suggest that a variety of intermolecular interaction patterns and intrinsic flexibility of the molecular framework should play a significant role in stabilizing the homochiral crystal. We found the difference in molecular arrangements between the racemic and the homochiral crystals, and we observed distinctly different emission colors. In particular, we observed heat-initiated homogeneous racemization without the need for a solvent or catalyst in the molten state of the homochiral crystal (R)-BAmCl. Our results mean that chiral resolution of a flexible fused-skeleton having a stereogenic boron center can be a platform for creating luminescent polymorphic materials.

Abstract
A combined experimental/computational investigation reveals that the cyclometalation of [PtMe2(DMSO)2], 1, by HC^N ligands proceeds via HC^N coordination through the N donor atom, oxidative addition of the arene C–H bond, and final dissociation of methane from a platinum hydride complex.

Abstract
New heteroleptic compounds of platinum(II)-containing cyclometalated N-heterocyclic carbenes, [PtCl(R-C^C*)(PPh3)] [R-CH^C*-κC* = 3-methyl-1-(naphthalen-2-yl)-1H-imidazol-2-ylidene (R-C = Naph; 1A), 1-[4-(ethoxycarbonyl)phenyl]-3-methyl-1H-imidazol-2-ylidene (R = CO2Et; 1B), and [Pt(R-C^C*)(py)(PPh3)]PF6 (py = pyridine; R-C = Naph, 2A; R = CO2Et, 2B], have been prepared and fully characterized. All of them were obtained as the trans-(C*,PPh3) isomer in high yields. The selectivity of their synthesis has been explained in terms of the degree of transphobia (T) of pairs of ligands in trans positions. X-ray diffraction studies on both 2A and 2B revealed that only in 2A, containing a C^C* with a more extended π system, do the molecules assemble themselves into head-to-tail pairs through intermolecular π···π contacts. The photophysical properties of 2A and 2B and those of the related compounds [Pt(NC-C^C*)(PPh3)L]PF6 [NC-CH^C*-κC* = 1-(4-cyanophenyl)-3-methyl-1H-imidazol-2-ylidene; L = pyridine (py; 2C), 2,6-dimethylphenylisocyanide (CNXyl; 3C), and 2-mercapto-1-methylimidazole (MMI; 4C)] have been examined to analyze the influence of the R substituent on R-C^C* (R-C = Naph; R = CO2Et, CN) and that of the ancillary ligands (L) on them. Experimental data and time-dependent density functional theory calculations showed the similarity of the electronic features associated with R-C^C* (R = CN, CO2Et) and their difference with respect to R-C^C* (R-C = Naph). All of the compounds are very efficient blue emitters in poly(methyl methacrylate) films under an argon atmosphere, with QY values ranging from 68% (2B) to 93% (2C). In the solid state, the color of the emission changes to yellowish-orange for compounds 2A (λmax = 600 nm) and 3C (λmax = 590 nm) because of the formation of aggregates through intermolecular π···π interactions. 2C and 3C were chosen to fabricate fully solution-processed electroluminescent devices with blue-light (2C), yellow-orange-light (3C), and white-light (mixtures of 2C and 3C) emission from neat films of the compounds as emitting layers.

Abstract
A new and efficient method for the preparation of several imidazolium salts containing an ester group in the C4 position of the aromatic ring through a retro-Claisen reaction pathway between a quinone derivative and several alcohols is described. This new organic transformation proceeds in the absence of a catalyst, but it is greatly catalyzed by different Lewis acids, especially with AgOAc at a very low catalyst loading and in very short reaction times. The process takes place by the nucleophilic attack of the carbonyl groups by the alcohol functionality, thus promoting a double C-C bond cleavage and C-H and C-O bond formation. This reaction represents the first example of this type between a quinone derivative and alcohols.

Abstract
Two classes of pincer-type Pt(II) complexes containing tridentate N-donor ligands (1-8) or C-deprotonated N^C^N ligands derived from 1,3-di(2-pyridyl)benzene (10-13) and auxiliary N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand were synthesized. [Pt(trpy)(NHC)](2+) complexes 1-5 display green phosphorescence in CH2 Cl2 (Φ: 1.1-5.3 %; τ: 0.3-1.0 μs) at room temperature. Moderate-to-intense emissions are observed for 1-7 in glassy solutions at 77 K and for 1-6 in the solid state. The [Pt(N^C^N)(NHC)](+) complexes 10-13 display strong green phosphorescence with quantum yields up to 65 % in CHCl3 . The reactions of 1 with a wide variety of anions were examined in various solvents. The tridentate N-donor ligand of 1 undergoes displacement reaction with CN(-) in protic solvents. Similar displacement of the N^C^N ligand by CN(-) has been observed for 10, leading to a luminescence "switch-off" response. The water-soluble 7 containing anthracenyl-functionalized NHC ligand acts as a light "switch-on" sensor for the detection of CN(-) ion with high selectivity. The in vitro cytotoxicity of the Pt(II) complexes towards HeLa cells has been evaluated. Complex 12 showed high cytotoxicity with IC50 value of 0.46 μM, whereas 1-4 and 6-8 are less cytotoxic. The cellular localization of the strongly luminescent complex 12 traced by using emission microscopy revealed that it mainly localizes in the cytoplasmic structures rather than in the nucleus. This complex can induce mitochondria dysfunction and subsequent cell death.

Abstract
The square-planar diimine-platinum(II) complex, Pt(4-Brbpy)(C≡CC6H5)2 (1) (4-Brbpy = 4-bromo-2,2'-bipyridine), was prepared and characterized. Solid-state 1 exhibits reversible thermo- and mechanical-grinding-triggered color and luminescence changes. When crystalline 1·2(CH2Cl2) or 1·2(CHCl3) are heated or ground, the original bright yellow-green emission centered at 525 (549, sh) nm changed to 637 and 690 nm, corresponding to thermo- and mechanochromic response shifts of approximately 88-112 nm and 141-165 nm, respectively. Meanwhile the crystalline state changes into an amorphous phase in both processes. Once the amorphous sample absorbs organic vapors, it can be reverted to the original crystalline state, along with red luminescence turning back to yellow-green emission. The reversibility of thermo- and mechanical-grinding-triggered chromic luminescence properties has been dynamically monitored by emission spectra and X-ray diffraction patterns. The dramatic thermo- and mechanical-grinding-triggered emission red shifts are most likely due to the conversion of the (3)MLCT/(3)LLCT emission state into the (3)MMLCT triplet state.

Abstract
The topological analysis of the electron density for electronic excited states under the formalism of the quantum theory of atoms in molecules using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) is presented. Relaxed electron densities for electronic excited states are computed by solving a Z-vector equation which is obtained by means of the Sternheimer interchange method. This is in contrast to previous work in which the electron density for excited states is obtained using DFT instead of TDDFT, that is, through the imposition of molecular occupancies in accordance with the electron configuration of the excited state under consideration. Once the electron density of the excited state is computed, its topological characterization and the properties of the atoms in molecules are obtained in the same manner that for the ground state. The analysis of the low-lying π→π* singlet and triplet vertical excitations of CO and C6H6 are used as representative examples of the application of this methodology. Altogether, it is shown how this procedure provides insights on the changes of the electron density following photoexcitation and it is our hope that it will be useful in the study of different photophysical and photochemical processes.

Abstract
New pincer-Pt complexes coordinated by (nitronyl nitroxide)-2-ide radical anion were prepared as stable compounds in high yields. The structures of these Pt complexes and the oxidized complexes were unequivocally determined by spectral and crystal structure analyses. The oxidation potential of the nitronyl nitroxide moiety in these complexes was shifted in the negative direction by ~0.6 V as a result of coordination to the Pt(II) atom.
