Asymmetric Catalysis with Helical Polymers

Chiral Supramolecular Organogel Constructed Using Riboflavin and Melamine: Its Application in Photo-Catalyzed Colorimetric Chiral Sensing and Enantioselective Adsorption

The synthesis of a chiral supramolecular organogel via the hierarchical helical self-assembly of optically active riboflavin and melamine derivatives is described herein. Owing to the photocatalysis of riboflavin and the supramolecular chirality induced in the helically stacked riboflavin/melamine complex, the gel is observed to act as a light-stimulated chiral sensor of optically active alcohols by detecting the change in color from yellow to green. The gel also served as an efficient chiral adsorbent, enabling optical resolution of a racemic compound with high chiral recognition ability.

Stimuli-responsive synthetic helical polymers

Synthetic dynamic helical polymers (supramolecular and covalent) and foldamers share the helix as a structural motif. Although the materials are different, these systems also share many structural properties, such as helix induction or conformational communication mechanisms. The introduction of stimuli responsive building blocks or monomer repeating units in these materials triggers conformational or structural changes, due to the presence/absence of the external stimulus, which are transmitted to the helix resulting in different effects, such as assymetry amplification, helix inversion or even changes in the helical scaffold (elongation, J/H helical aggregates). In this review, we show through selected examples how different stimuli (e.g., temperature, solvents, cations, anions, redox, chiral additives, pH or light) can alter the helical structures of dynamic helical polymers (covalent and supramolecular) and foldamers acting on the conformational composition or molecular structure of their components, which is also transmitted to the macromolecular helical structure.

Control of One-Handed Helicity in Polyacetylenes: Impact of an Extremely Small Amount of Chiral Substituents

Controlling the one-handed helicity in synthetic polymers is crucial for developing helical polymer-based advanced chiral materials. We now report that an extremely small amount of chiral biphenylylacetylene (BPA) monomers (ca. 0.3-0.5 mol %) allows complete control of the one-handed helicity throughout the polymer chains mostly composed of achiral BPAs. Chiral substituents introduced at the 2-position of the biphenyl units of BPA positioned in the vicinity of the polymer backbones contribute to a significant amplification of the helical bias, as interpreted by theoretical modeling and simulation. The helical structures, such as the helical pitch and absolute helical handedness (right- or left-handed helix) of the one-handed helical copolymers, were unambiguously determined by high-resolution atomic force microscopy combined with X-ray diffraction. The exceptionally strong helix-biasing power of the chiral BPA provides a highly durable and practically useful chiral material for the separation of enantiomers in chromatography by copolymerization of an achiral functional BPA with a small amount of the chiral BPA (0.5 mol %) due to the robust helical scaffold of the one-handed helical copolymer.

Screw sense excess and reversals of helical polymers in solution

The helix reversal is a structural motif found in helical polymers in the solid state, but whose existence is elusive in solution. Herein, we have shown how the photochemical electrocyclization (PEC) of poly(phenylacetylene)s (PPAs) can be used to determine not only the presence of helix reversals in polymer solution, but also to estimate the screw sense excess. To perform these studies, we used a library of well folded PPAs and different copolymers series made by enantiomeric comonomers that show chiral conflict effect. The results obtained indicate that the PEC of a PPA will depend on the helical scaffold adopted by the PPA backbone and on its folding degree. Then, from these studies it is possible to determine the screw sense excess of a PPA, highly important in applications such as chiral stationary phases in HPLC or asymmetric synthesis.

Diastereomeric multi-chiral pendant groups: Their key role in stimuli-responsive polymeric responses

Chiral information transmission in helical polymers bearing multi-chiral pendant groups is usually determined by the absolute configuration of the first chiral center. The second chiral residue usually has low-to-null influence in the macromolecular handedness of the polymer, due to its remote position respect to the polyene main chain. Here, we demonstrate how the stimuli responsive properties of diastereomeric polymers, obtained by changing the absolute configuration of the second chiral center, are different due to the unlike properties of diastereoisomers.

Maximized axial helicity in a Pd2L4 cage: inverse guest size-dependent compression and mesocate isomerism

Helicity is an archetypal structural motif of many biological systems and provides a basis for molecular recognition in DNA. Whilst artificial supramolecular hosts are often helical, the relationship between helicity and guest encapsulation is not well understood. We report a detailed study on a significantly coiled-up Pd₂L₄ metallohelicate with an unusually wide azimuthal angle (∼176°). Through a combination of NMR spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, trapped ion mobility mass spectrometry and isothermal titration calorimetry we show that the coiled-up cage exhibits extremely tight anion binding (K of up to 10⁶ M^-1) by virtue of a pronounced oblate/prolate cavity expansion, whereby the Pd-Pd separation decreases for mono-anionic guests of increasing size. Electronic structure calculations point toward strong dispersion forces contributing to these host-guest interactions. In the absence of a suitable guest, the helical cage exists in equilibrium with a well-defined mesocate isomer that possesses a distinct cavity environment afforded by a doubled Pd-Pd separation distance.

Ultra-fast One-Handed Helix Induction and Its Static Helicity Memory in a Poly(biphenylylacetylene) with a Catalytic Amount of Chiral Ammonium Salts

We report an ultra-fast helix induction and subsequent static helicity memory in poly(biphenylylacetylene) (PBPA-A) assisted by a catalytic amount of nonracemic ammonium salts comprised of non-coordinating tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate (BArF^- ) as a counter anion. The remarkable acceleration of the helix-induction rate in PBPA-A accompanied by the significant amplification of the asymmetry relies on the two methoxymethoxy groups of the biphenyl pendants, which can gain access to enfold the chiral ammoniums in a crown-ether manner in specific aromatic solvents, leading to ultra-fast helicity induction, which is completed within 30 s. In aromatic solvents, helicity memory is lost rapidly, but is quite stable in long-chain hydrocarbons. The best use of specific solvents for helicity induction and static helicity memory, respectively, provides a highly sensitive chirality sensing system toward a small amount of chiral amines and amino acids when complexed with BArF^- .

Full Control of the Chiral Overpass Effect in Helical Polymers: P/M Screw Sense Induction by Remote Chiral Centers After Bypassing the First Chiral Residue

In helical polymers, helical sense induction is usually commanded by teleinduction mechanism, where the largest substituent of the chiral residue directly attached to the main chain is the one that commands the helical sense. In this work, different helical structures with different helical senses are induced in a helical polymer [poly-(phenylacetylene)] when the conformational composition of two different dihedral angles of a pendant group with more than two chiral residues is tamed. Thus, while the dihedral angle at chiral residue 1 [(R)- or (S)-alanine], attached to the backbone, produces an extended or bent conformation in the pendant resulting in two scaffolds with different stretching degree, the second dihedral angle at chiral residue 2 [(R)- or (S)-methoxyphenylacetamide] places the substituents of this chiral center in a different spatial orientation, originating opposite helical senses at the polymer that are induced through a total control of the "chiral overpass effect".

Catalytic One-Handed Helix Induction and Subsequent Static Memory of Poly(biphenylylacetylene)s Assisted by a Small Amount of Carboxy Groups Introduced at the Pendants

A dynamically racemic helical copolymer composed of an achiral biphenylylacetylene (BPA) bearing methoxymethoxy groups at the 2,2'-positions and 1 mol % of an achiral BPA carrying 2-carboxy-2'-methoxymethoxy groups at the biphenyl pendants was found to fold into an excess one-handed helix with significant amplification of the helicity in the presence of a small amount of optically active amines. The induced macromolecular helicity was retained ("memorized") after removal of the chiral amines. The copolymer had a significant sensitivity for detecting the chirality of chiral amines with a sensitivity more than 10000-fold higher than that of the corresponding homopolymers with no carboxy group, thus showing Cotton effects even in the presence of a 0.01 equiv of an optically active amine. The effects of the substituents at the 4'-position of the biphenyl pendants of the copolymers and the structures of the chiral amines on the macromolecular helicity induction were also investigated.

: Helical Poly(quinoxaline-2,3-diyl)s Bearing 4-(Dipropylamino)pyridin-3-yl Pendants as Chirality-Switchable Nucleophilic Catalysts for the Kinetic Resolution of Secondary Alcohols

Helically chiral poly(quinoxaline-2,3-diyl)s bearing 4-(dipropylamino)pyridin-3-yl pendants at the 5-position of the quinoxaline ring (PQXdpap) exhibited high catalytic activities and moderate to high selectivities (up to s = 87) in the acylative kinetic resolution of secondary alcohols. The solvent-dependent helical chirality switching of PQXdpap between pure toluene and a 1:1 mixture of toluene and 1,1,2-trichloroethane enabled the preparation of either compound of a pair of enantiomerically pure alcohols (>99% ee) from a single catalyst.

Alkyne-Palladium(II)-Catalyzed Living Polymerization of Isocyanides: An Exploration of Diverse Structures and Functions

Inspired by the perfect helical structures and the resulting exquisite functions of biomacromolecules, helical polymers have attracted increasing attention in recent years. Polyisocyanide is well known for its distinctive rodlike helical structure and various applications in chiral recognition, enantiomer separation, circularly polarized luminescence, liquid crystallization, and other fields. Although various methods and catalysts for isocyanide polymerization have been reported, the precise synthesis of helical polyisocyanides with controlled molecular weight, low dispersity, and high tacticity remains a formidable challenge. Owing to a limited synthesis strategy, the controlled synthesis of topological polyisocyanides has barely been realized. This Accounts highlights our recent endeavors to explore novel catalysts for the living polymerization of isocyanides. Fortunately, we discovered that alkyne-Pd(II) catalysts could initiate the living polymerization of isocyanides, resulting in helical polyisocyanides with controlled structures, high tacticity, and tunable compositions. These catalysts are applicable to various isocyanide monomers, including alkyl isocyanides, aryl isocyanides, and diisocyanobenzene derivatives. Incorporating chiral bidentate phosphine ligands onto alkyne-Pd(II) complexes formed chiral Pd(II) catalysts, which promoted the asymmetric living polymerization of achiral isocyanide, yielding single left- and right-handed helices with highly optical activities.Using alkyne-Pd(II) catalysts, various topological polyisocyanides have been facilely prepared, including hybrid block copolymers, bottlebrush polymers, core cross-linked star polymers, and organic/inorganic nanoparticles. For instance, various hybrid block polyisocyanides were easily produced by coupling alkyne-Pd(II)-catalyzed living isocyanide polymerization with controlled radical polymerization and ring-opening polymerization (ROP). Combining the ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of norbornene with Pd(II)-catalyzed isocyanide polymerization, bottlebrush polyisocyanides and core cross-linked star polymers were easily prepared. Pd(II)-catalyzed living polymerization of poly(lactic acid)s with isocyanide termini resulted in densely grafted bottlebrush polyisocyanides with closely packed side chains. Moreover, the surface-initiated living polymerization of isocyanides produced a family of polyisocyanide-grafted organic/inorganic hybrid nanoparticles using nanoparticles with alkyne-Pd(II) catalysts anchored on the surfaces. Surprisingly, the nanoparticles and star polymers with helical polyisocyanide arms performed exceptionally well in terms of chiral recognition and resolution. Incorporated organocatalysts such as proline and prolinol units onto the pendants of optically active helical polyisocyanides, a family of polymer-based chiral organocatalysts, were generated, which showed significantly improved stereoselectivity for the asymmetric Aldol reaction and Michael addition and can be easily recycled.Using a chiral alkyne-Pd(II) catalyst, single-handed helical polyisocyanides bearing naphthalene and pyrene probes were produced from achiral isocyanide monomers. These polymers showed excellent self-sorting properties as revealed using a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) investigation and were self-assembled into two-dimensional (2D) smectic nanostructures driven by both helicity and chain length. Incorporating helical poly(phenyl isocyanide) (PPI) onto semiconducting poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) induced the asymmetric assembly of the resulting P3HT-b-PPI copolymers into single-handed cylindrical micelles with controlled dimensions and tunable photoluminescence.

Recent Advances and Perspectives on Expanding the Chemical Diversity of Lasso Peptides

Ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptides (RiPPs) are a growing family of natural products that exhibit a range of structures and bioactivities. Initially assembled from the twenty proteinogenic amino acids in a ribosome-dependent manner, RiPPs assume their peculiar bioactive structures through various post-translational modifications. The essential modifications representative of each subfamily of RiPP are performed on a precursor peptide by the so-called processing enzymes; however, various tailoring enzymes can also embellish the precursor peptide or processed peptide with additional functional groups. Lasso peptides are an interesting subfamily of RiPPs characterized by their unique lariat knot-like structure, wherein the C-terminal tail is inserted through a macrolactam ring fused by an isopeptide bond between the N-terminal amino group and an acidic side chain. Until recently, relatively few lasso peptides were found to be tailored with extra functional groups. Nevertheless, the development of new routes to diversify lasso peptides and thus introduce novel or enhanced biological, medicinally relevant, or catalytic properties is appealing. In this review, we highlight several strategies through which lasso peptides have been successfully modified and provide a brief overview of the latest findings on the tailoring of these peptides. We also propose future directions for lasso peptide tailoring as well as potential applications for these peptides in hybrid catalyst design.

Cu(I)-Catalyzed Click Chemistry in Glycoscience and Their Diverse Applications

Copper(I)-catalyzed 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition between organic azides and terminal alkynes, commonly known as CuAAC or click chemistry, has been identified as one of the most successful, versatile, reliable, and modular strategies for the rapid and regioselective construction of 1,4-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazoles as diversely functionalized molecules. Carbohydrates, an integral part of living cells, have several fascinating features, including their structural diversity, biocompatibility, bioavailability, hydrophilicity, and superior ADME properties with minimal toxicity, which support increased demand to explore them as versatile scaffolds for easy access to diverse glycohybrids and well-defined glycoconjugates for complete chemical, biochemical, and pharmacological investigations. This review highlights the successful development of CuAAC or click chemistry in emerging areas of glycoscience, including the synthesis of triazole appended carbohydrate-containing molecular architectures (mainly glycohybrids, glycoconjugates, glycopolymers, glycopeptides, glycoproteins, glycolipids, glycoclusters, and glycodendrimers through regioselective triazole forming modular and bio-orthogonal coupling protocols). It discusses the widespread applications of these glycoproducts as enzyme inhibitors in drug discovery and development, sensing, gelation, chelation, glycosylation, and catalysis. This review also covers the impact of click chemistry and provides future perspectives on its role in various emerging disciplines of science and technology.

Photochemical Electrocyclization of Poly(phenylacetylene)s: Unwinding Helices to Elucidate their 3D Structure in Solution

Photochemical electrocyclization of poly(phenylacetylene)s (PPAs) is used for the structural elucidation of a polyene backbone. This method not only allows classification of PPAs in cis-cisoidal (ω₁ <90°) or cis-transoidal structures (ω₁ >90°), but also approximating ω₁ . A PPA solution is illuminated with visible light and monitoring the photochemical electrocyclization of the PPA helix by measuring the ECD spectra at different times. PPAs with a cis-cisoidal structure show a reduction of the ECD signal of at least 50 % before 30 min of irradiation, while cis-transoidal helices need much longer time because the transoidal bond must be isomerized. The different cis-cisoidal and cis-transoidal helices require different times to decrease their ECD signal by 50 % (t_1/2 ), depending on the degree of compression or stretching of the helix, establishing a relationship between the secondary structure adopted by PPA (ω₁ ) and the time required to lose the ECD vinylic signal by light irradiation.

Theoretical Insight into the Reversal of Chemoselectivity in Diels-Alder Reactions of α,β-Unsaturated Aldehydes and Ketones Catalyzed by Brønsted and Lewis Acids

Experimentally, a reversal of chemoselectivity has been observed in catalyzed Diels–Alder reactions of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes (e.g., (2E)-but-2-enal) and ketones (e.g., 2-hexen-4-one) with cyclopentadiene. Indeed, using the triflimidic Brønsted acid Tf2NH as catalyst, the reaction gave a Diels–Alder adduct derived from α,β-unsaturated ketone as a major product. On the other hand, the use of tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane B(C6F5)3 bulky Lewis acid as catalyst gave mainly the cycloadduct of α,β-unsaturated aldehyde as a major product. Our aim in the present work is to put in evidence the role of the catalyst in the reversal of the chemoselectivity of the catalyzed Diels–Alder reactions of (2E)-but-2-enal and 2-Hexen-4-one with cyclopentadiene. The calculations were performed at the ωB97XD/6-311G(d,p) level of theory and the solvent effects of dichloromethane were taken into account using the PCM solvation model. The obtained results are in good agreement with experimental outcomes.

Enantioconvergent Cu-Catalyzed Intramolecular C-C Coupling at Boron-Bound C(sp3) Atoms of α-Aminoalkylboronates Using a C1-Symmetrical 2,2'-Bipyridyl Ligand Attached to a Helically Chiral Macromolecular Scaffold

Enantioconvergent intramolecular coupling of α-(2-bromobenzoylamino)benzylboronic esters was achieved using a copper catalyst having helically chiral macromolecular bipyridyl ligand, PQXbpy. Racemic α-(2-bromobenzoylamino)benzylboronic esters were converted into (R)-configured 3-arylisoindolinones with high enantiopurity using right-handed helical PQXbpy as a chiral ligand in a toluene/CHCl₃ mixed solvent. When enantiopure (R)- and (S)-configured boronates were separately reacted under the same reaction conditions, both afforded (R)-configured products through formal stereoinvertive and stereoretentive processes, respectively. From these results, a mechanism involving deracemization of organocopper intermediates in the presence of PQXbpy is assumed. PQXbpy switched its helical sense to left-handed when a toluene/1,1,2-trichloroethane mixed solvent was used, resulting in the formation of the corresponding (S)-products from the racemic starting material.

Emergence of Homochiral Benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide Helical Assemblies and Catalysts upon Addition of an Achiral Monomer

Chirality amplification refers to the ability of a small chiral bias to fully control the main chain helicity of polymers and assemblies. Further implementation of functional chirally amplified helices as switchable asymmetric catalysts, chiral sensors, and circularly polarized light emitters will require a greater control of the energetics governing these chirality amplification effects. In this work, we report on the counterintuitive ability of an achiral molecule to suppress conformational defects in supramolecular helices, thus leading to the emergence of homochirality in a system containing a very small chiral bias. We focus our investigation on supramolecular helices composed of an achiral benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide (BTA) ligand, coordinated to copper, and an enantiopure BTA comonomer. Amplification of chirality as probed by varying the amount (sergeants and soldiers effect) or the optical purity (diluted majority-rules effect) of the enantiopure comonomer are modest in this initial system. However, both effects are hugely enhanced upon addition of a second achiral BTA monomer, leading to a perfect control of the helicity either by means of a remarkably low amount of sergeants (0.5%) or a small bias from a racemic mixture of enantiopure comonomers (10% ee). Such an enhancement in the amplification of chirality is only achieved by mixing the three components, i.e. the two achiral and the enantiopure comonomers, highlighting a synergistic effect upon coassembly of the three monomers. Investigation of the role of the achiral additive by multifarious analytical techniques supports its ability to stabilize the helical coassemblies and suppress helix reversals: i.e., conformational defects. Implementation of these helical copper precatalysts in the hydrosilylation of 1-(4-nitrophenyl)ethanone confirms that the effect of the achiral BTA additive is also operative under the conditions of the catalytic experiment. A highly enantioenriched product (90% ee) is produced by a supramolecular catalyst operating with ppm levels of chiral species.

Chiral Overpass Induction in Dynamic Helical Polymers Bearing Pendant Groups with Two Chiral Centers

The dynamic behavior of helical polymers bearing pendant groups with two chiral centers was studied. Controlled conformational changes at the chiral units placed either closer to or further away from the main chain promote different helical structures. Although the first residue is usually responsible for determining a specific helicity (P or M), we now found that the second chiral center is also able to induce a preferred helical sense when it is located closer in space to the main chain, thereby cancelling the order from the first chiral moiety. This result was achieved through proper coordination with a metal cation. As proof of concept, poly(phenylacetylene)s (PPAs) that bear one and two chiral amino acid units of different sizes and configuration combinations (l/d-alanine and l/d-phenylalanine) as pendants were evaluated. In total, ten polymers were studied. This constitutes the first report of axial control from a remote stereocenter in polymers bearing complex chiral pendants.

Chiral bisphosphine ligands based on quinoline oligoamide foldamers: application in asymmetric hydrogenation

A series of chiral bisphosphine ligands were designed and synthesized based on single-handed quinoline oligoamide foldamers. The bisphosphine ligands can coordinate with Rh(cod)₂BF₄ in a 1 : 1 stoichiometry and the resulted chiral Rh(i) catalysts were applied in the asymmetric hydrogenation of α-dehydroamino acid esters, in which excellent conversions and promising levels of enantioselectivity were achieved.

Topochemical Azide-Alkyne Cycloaddition Reaction

Topochemical reactions are solid-state reactions that transpire under the strict control of molecular packing in the crystal lattice. Due to this lattice control, these reactions generate products in a regio-/stereospecific manner and in very high yields. In a broader sense, topochemical reactions mimic nature's way of carrying out reactions in a confined environment of enzymes giving specific products. Apart from their remarkable specificity, topochemical reactions have many other interesting features that make these reactions more attractive than solution-phase reactions. Solution-phase reactions necessitate the use of reactants, reagents, catalysts, and solvents and often give products along with varying amounts of byproducts, necessitating complex workup and chromatographic purification using various chemicals. These inevitable chemical wastes from solution-state reactions could be avoided by topochemical reactions, as they are solvent-free and catalyst-free and often do not require any chromatographic purification in view of their specificity and high yielding nature. Also the confinement offered by the crystal lattice gives products that are not possible by solution-phase reactions. Another interesting feature of topochemical reactions is the possibility of formation of products in an ordered (crystalline) form, which imparts interesting properties. Thus, topochemical reactions have control not only at the molecular level (regio-/stereospecificity) but also at the supramolecular level (packing). Many topochemical reactions happen in single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) fashion, and crystal structure analysis of such reactions often gives mechanistic insights and knowledge about the geometrical criteria required for the reaction. Despite all these attractive features, reactions that can be done topochemically are limited. There is tremendous interest in the development of new categories of topochemical reactions and strategies to achieve reactivity in crystals. In this Account, we will summarize our attempts to develop topochemical azide-alkyne cycloaddition (TAAC) reactions. We have used hydrogen-bonding as the main noncovalent interaction for aligning azide-and-alkyne-substituted derivatives of various biomolecules in orientations suitable for their proximity-driven cycloaddition reaction in crystals. Overall, three major classes of biomolecules; carbohydrates, nucleosides, and peptides were successfully exploited for their TAAC reactions using conventional O-H···O, N-H···O, and N-H···N hydrogen bonds as supramolecular glues for controlling their assembly in crystals. The crystals of these monomers underwent TAAC reaction either spontaneously at room temperature or under heating yielding triazole-linked biopolymer mimics. The ordered packing of product molecules imparted special properties to the products formed. The legendary "cream of the crop" azide-alkyne click reaction has diverse applications in the areas of bioconjugation, material science, polymer synthesis, and so forth. Belonging to the same genre, TAAC is a novel metal-free approach for making the triazole-linked products employing the ordered crystal/gel as a reaction medium. In brief, our studies suggest that TAAC reaction can be implemented in diverse molecular categories and has high potential to develop into a field with practical applications.

Synthesis of helical π-conjugated polymers bearing pyridine N-oxide pendants and asymmetric allylation of aldehydes in the helical cavity

Catalytically active chiral π-conjugated polymers (poly-1(NO)r) bearing pyridine N-oxide pendants were synthesized by ternary copolymerization of a d-glucose-bound diethynyl compound with two types of thieno[3,4-b]thiophene comonomer, one of which contained a pyridine N-oxide group. When the pyridine N-oxide content in the copolymer was 10 mol% (poly-1(NO)0.10), the polymer backbone formed a one-handed helical structure in acetonitrile. Pyridine N-oxide pendants arranged inside the helical cavity of poly-1(NO)0.10 exhibited catalytic activity for the asymmetric allylation of benzaldehydes, producing the corresponding allyl alcohols with up to 43% ee.

Synthesis and characterization of a polyisocyanide with thioether pendant caused an oxidation-triggered helix-to-helix transition

Stimuli responsive helical polymers have attracted wide attention and many polymers responsive to the external stimuli have been synthesized. But, only a few examples have been reported regarding the redox-induced helicity inversion helical polymers. The polyisocyanide including thioether pendant (poly-MBTIP) was synthesized by polymerization of methyl (R)-3-(benzylthio)-2-isocyanopropanoate (MBTIP) monomer using NiCl2·6H2O as catalytic agent in dry DCM. The chiroptical and oxidation properties of the poly-MBTIP are investigated. The poly-MBTIPs exhibit intense specific optical rotations and Cotton effects compared to the monomer, strongly suggesting a helical conformation of the polymer backbone. Additionally, the thioether pendant of poly-MBTIP backbone was oxidized to sulfoxide group by H2O2. Interestingly, the specific optical rotations and Cotton effects of poly-MBTIP oxidized are reversed, probably suggesting a helical conformation inversion.

Telechelic Helical Poly(quinoxaline-2,3-diyl)s Containing a Structurally Defined, Circularly Polarized Luminescent Terquinoxaline Core: Synthesis by Core-Initiated Bidirectional Living Polymerization

We have designed and synthesized divalent initiators that contain a fluorescent terquinoxaline unit with two palladium groups for the living polymerization of 1,2-diisocyanobenzenes. Using these divalent initiators, the bidirectional living polymerization of a monomer bearing (S)-butoxymethyl side chains afforded telechelic helical poly(quinoxaline-2,3-diyl)s (PQXs), which consist of a terquinoxaline unit at the center of the polymer chain and chiral oligomeric blocks on both sides. The location of the core unit was confirmed by NMR spectroscopy and photoluminescence measurements. Upon changing the solvent from CHCl₃ to 1,1,2-trichloroethane, these PQXs exhibit both left- and right-handed circularly polarized luminescence with dissymmetry factors of approximately 1.0 × 10^-3.

Supramolecular Single-Chain Polymeric Nanoparticles

Nature has unparalleled control over the conformation and dynamics of its folded macromolecular structures. Nature’s ability to arrange amino acids into a precise spatial organization by way of folding allows proteins to fulfill specific functions in an extremely efficient manner. Chemists and materials scientists have used the delicate structure–function relationships observed in proteins to elucidate nature’s design principles. These insights have led to the development of various revolutionary macromolecular architectures, mimicking the structural features of proteins. In this review, we focus on the folding of single polymer chains into well-defined nanoparticles using supramolecular interactions and their possible use as enzyme mimics.

Stimuli-Directed Colorimetric Interconversion of Helical Polymers Accompanied by a Tunable Self-Assembly Process

Interconversion between extended and bent structures at the pendant groups of a chiral polyene framework [poly(phenylacetylene) with (R)-(2-methoxy-2-phenylacetyl)glycine residues linked to 4-vinylanilines] allows the reversible colorimetric transformation from stretched to compressed helical cis-transoid polyenic structures through manipulation of the flexible spacer. This transformation generates either organogels (stretched helical form) or nanoparticles (compressed helical form) under the control of polar/low polar stimuli respectively and opens the way to the development of new sensors and stimuli-sensitive materials based on these concepts.

Chiral catalysts immobilized on achiral polymers: effect of the polymer support on the performance of the catalyst

Achiral polymeric supports can have important positive effects on the activity, stability and selectivity of supported chiral catalysts.

Chiral nanostructure in polymers under different deposition conditions observed using atomic force microscopy of monolayers: poly(phenylacetylene)s as a case study

Dynamic poly(phenylacetylene)s (PPAs) adopt helical structures with different elongation or helical senses depending on the types of pendants. Hence, a good knowledge of the parameters that define their structures becomes a key factor in the understanding of their properties and functions. Herein, the techniques used for the study of the secondary structure of PPAs using atomic-force microscopy (AFM) are presented, with special attention directed towards the methods used for the preparation of monolayers, and their consequences in the quality of the AFM images. Thus, monolayers formed by drop casting, spin coating followed by crystallization or annealing, Langmuir-Blodgett and Langmuir-Schaefer methods, onto highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) or mica, are described, together with the AFM images and the resulting helical structure obtained for different PPAs. Furthermore, some conclusions are drawn both on the adequacy of the different techniques for the formation of monolayers and on the solid supports utilized to elucidate the secondary structure of different PPAs.
