Abstract
Recent advancements in on-surface synthesis have enabled the reliable and predictable preparation of atomically precise low-dimensional materials with remarkable properties, which are often unattainable through traditional wet chemistry. Among these materials, porphyrins stand out as a particularly intriguing class of molecules, extensively studied both in solution and on surfaces. Their appeal lies in the ability to fine-tune their unique chemical and physical properties through central metal exchange or peripheral functionalization. However, the synthesis of π-extended porphyrins featuring unsubstituted anthracenyl groups has remained elusive. Herein, we report an in vacuo temperature-controlled cyclodehydrogenation of bis- and tetraanthracenyl Zn(II) porphyrins on a gold(111) surface. By gradually increasing the temperature, sequential dehydrogenation leads to the formation of fused anthracenyl porphyrin products. Notably, at high molecular coverage, the formation of bowl-shaped porphyrins occurs, along with transmetalation of Zn with Au. These findings open the door to a variety of π-extended anthracenyl-containing porphyrin products via cyclodehydrogenation and transmetalation, offering significant potential in the fields of molecular (photo/electro)catalysis, (opto)electronics, and spintronics.

Abstract
A series of symmetrical and unsymmetrical donor-acceptor type phenothiazine derivatives 1-18 were designed and synthesized via Pd-catalyzed Sonogashira cross-coupling and [2 + 2] cycloaddition-retroelectrocyclization reactions. The incorporation of cyano-based acceptors 1,1,4,4-tetracyanobutadiene (TCBD) and dicyanoquinodimethane (DCNQ) in the phenothiazine derivatives resulted in systematic variation in the photophysical, thermal, and electrochemical properties. The electronic absorption spectra of the phenothiazine derivatives with strong acceptors 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11, 12, 14, 15, 17, and 18 show red-shifted absorption as compared to phenothiazine derivatives 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, and 16 in the near-IR region due to a strong intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) transition. The electrochemical analysis of the phenothiazine derivatives 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11, 12, 14, 15, 17, and 18 reveals two reduction waves at low potential due to the TCBD and DCNQ acceptors. The mono-TCBD-functionalized phenothiazine 2 shows higher thermal stability compared to other phenothiazine derivatives. The computational studies on phenothiazines 1-18 reveal the LUMO is substantially stabilized as acceptor strength increases, which lowers the HOMO-LUMO gap.

Abstract
Three new tetraphenylethene (TPE) push-pull chromophores exhibiting strong intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) are described. They were obtained via [2 + 2] cycloaddition-retroelectrocyclization (CA-RE) click reactions on an electron-rich alkyne-tetrafunctionalized TPE (TPE-alkyne) using both 1,1,2,2-tetracyanoethene (TCNE), 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) and 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4-TCNQ) as electron-deficient alkenes. Only the starting TPE-alkyne displayed significant AIE behavior, whereas for TPE-TCNE, a faint effect was observed, and for TPE-TCNQ and TPE-F4-TCNQ, no fluorescence was observed in any conditions. The main ICT bands that dominate the UV-Visible absorption spectra underwent a pronounced red-shift beyond the near-infrared (NIR) region for TPE-F4-TCNQ. Based on TD-DFT calculations, it was shown that the ICT character shown by the compounds exclusively originated from the clicked moieties independently of the nature of the central molecular platform. Photothermal (PT) studies conducted on both TPE-TCNQ and TPE-F4-TCNQ in the solid state revealed excellent properties, especially for TPE-F4-TCNQ. These results indicated that CA-RE reaction of TCNQ or F4-TCNQ with donor-substituted are promising candidates for PT applications.

Abstract
![]()
In this study, two different classes
of push–pull chromophores
were synthesized in modest to excellent yields by formal [2+2] cycloaddition-retroelectrocyclization
(CA-RE) reactions. N-Methyl indole was introduced
as a new donor group to activate alkynes in the CA-RE transformations.
Depending on the side groups’ size and donor/acceptor characteristics, N-methyl indole-containing compounds exhibited λmax values ranging between 378 and 658 nm. The optoelectronic
properties of the reported D–A-type structures were studied
by UV/vis spectroscopy and computational studies. The complete regioselectivity
observed in the products was elaborated by one-dimensional (1D) and
two-dimensional (2D) NMR studies, and the electron donor strength
order of N-alkyl indole and triazene donor groups
was also established. The intramolecular charge-transfer characteristics
of the target push–pull chromophores were investigated by frontier
orbital depictions, electrostatic potential maps, and time-dependent
density functional theory calculations. Overall, the computational
and experimental results match each other. Integrating a new donor
group, N-alkyl indole, into the substrates used in
formal [2+2] cycloaddition-retroelectrocyclizations has significant
potential to overcome the limited donor-substituted substrate scope
problem of CA-RE reactions.

Abstract
We present for the first time an adjacent dehydrogenative homocoupling and cyclodehydrogenation reaction of mesityl groups to form a synthetic nanoribbon on Cu(110). Submolecular resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) observations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm the formation of an ethylene (-CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH-) unit or an aromatic six-membered ring group.

Abstract
Near-infrared (NIR) absorbing nanomaterials, built from anionic heptamethine cyanine dyes and single-walled carbon nanotubes or few-layer graphene, are presented. The covalent linkage, using 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions, results in nanoconjugates that synchronize the properties of both materials, as demonstrated by an in-depth characterization study carried out by transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. UV-vis-NIR and Raman spectroscopies further confirmed the unique electronic structure of the novel photoactive nanomaterials.

Abstract
Surface-confined synthesis has been offering a wide range of opportunities for the construction of novel molecular nanostructures. Exploring new types of on-surface coupling reactions is considered essential for being able to deliberately tune the materials properties. Here, we report on the formation of a covalent C-C bonding motif, namely 1,3-cyclobutadiene, via surface-confined [2 + 2] cycloaddition between pyrene moieties using low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (LT-STM) and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. By employing a hydrogen dosing treatment together with low-temperature activation, we were able to both eliminate residual byproducts and obtain covalent 1D polymers through the formation of 1,3-cyclobutadiene units. The resulting C-C bonding motif has so far hardly been explored in surface chemistry and substantial evidence is provided that the hydrogen treatment is crucial towards the removal of byproducts in surface-confined polymerization.

Abstract
The self-assembly of cyano-functionalized triarylamine derivatives on Cu(111), Ag(111) and Au(111) was studied by means of scanning tunnelling microscopy, low-energy electron diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. Different bonding motifs, such as antiparallel dipolar coupling, hydrogen bonding and metal coordination, were observed. Whereas on Ag(111) only one hexagonally close-packed pattern stabilized by hydrogen bonding is observed, on Au(111) two different partially porous phases are present at submonolayer coverage, stabilized by dipolar coupling, hydrogen bonding and metal coordination. In contrast to the self-assembly on Ag(111) and Au(111), for which large islands are formed, on Cu(111), only small patches of hexagonally close-packed networks stabilized by metal coordination and areas of disordered molecules are found. The significant variety in the molecular self-assembly of the cyano-functionalized triarylamine derivatives on these coinage metal surfaces is explained by differences in molecular mobility and the subtle interplay between intermolecular and molecule-substrate interactions.

Abstract
We have investigated thin films of a perylene diimide derivative with a cyano-functionalized core (PDI-8CN2) deposited on Au(111) single crystals from the monolayer to the multilayer regime. We found that PDI-8CN2 is chemisorbed on gold. The molecules experience a thickness-dependent reorientation, and a 2D growth mode with molecular stepped terraces is achieved adopting low deposition rates. The obtained results are discussed in terms of their impact on field effect devices, also clarifying why the use of substrate/contact treatments, decoupling PDI-8CN2 molecules from the substrate/contacts, is beneficial for such devices. Our results also suggest that perylene diimide derivatives with CN bay-functionalization are very promising candidates for single-molecule electronic devices.

Abstract
Resonance interaction of low energy (0-14 eV) electrons with gas-phase 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) was investigated using dissociative electron attachment (DEA) spectroscopy. Spectral features associated with formation of long-lived TCNQ molecular negative ions are detected at incident electron energies of 0.3, 1.3, and 3.0 eV. A variety of negative fragments is observed around 4 eV, and slow (microseconds) dissociative decay channels are detected at about 3 eV, in competition with simple re-emission of the captured electron. The average electron detachment time from the TCNQ(-) negative ions formed at 3 eV was evaluated to be 250 μs. The experimental findings are interpreted with the support of density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the empty orbital energies, scaled with an empirical equation, and by comparison with earlier electron transmission spectroscopy (ETS) data. A possible mechanism for the unusual formation of long-lived molecular anions above zero energy (up to 3 eV) is briefly discussed. The present results on the interactions between electrons and isolated TCNQ molecules could give more insight into processes observed in TCNQ adsorbates under conditions of excess negative charge. In particular, electron-stimulated surface reactions are hypothesized, likely occurring when condensed TCNQ molecules are exposed to electron beam irradiation.

Abstract
Imaging of dopamine D2/3 receptors (D2/3R) can shed light on the nature of several neuropsychiatric disorders in which dysregulation of D2/3R signaling is involved. Agonist D2/3 tracers for PET/SPECT imaging are considered to be superior to antagonists because they are more sensitive to dopamine concentrations and may selectively label the high-affinity receptor state. Carbon-11-labeled D2/3R agonists have been developed, but these short-lived tracers can be used only in centers with a cyclotron. Here, we report the development of a series of novel D2R agonist compounds based on the 2-aminomethylchromane (AMC) scaffold that provides ample opportunities for the introduction of longer-lived [(18)F] or [(123)I]. Binding experiments showed that several AMC compounds have a high affinity and selectivity for D2/3R and act as agonists. Two fluorine-containing compounds were [(18)F]-labeled, and both displayed specific binding to striatal D2/3R in rat brain slices in vitro. These findings encourage further in vivo evaluations.

Abstract
Using scanning tunneling microscopy, we demonstrate that the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition between a terminal alkyne and an azide can be performed under solvent-free ultrahigh vacuum conditions with reactants adsorbed on a Cu(111) surface. XPS shows significant degradation of the azide upon adsorption, which is found to be the limiting factor for the reaction.

Abstract
Repulsive interactions: a staging of supramolecular aggregation from (0D) clusters to (1D) chains and (2D) assemblies as a function of molecular coverage of dipolar porphyrins adsorbed on the Ag(111) surface is described. It displays a complex interplay of both attractive and repulsive molecule-molecule interactions, the emergence of chirality, and the registry of the substrate.

Abstract
Sublimation of alkali halides (NaCl and LiCl) onto a pre-assembled hydrogen-bonded layer of TCNQ on Au(111) resulted in the formation of 2D ionic layers via a direct charge-transfer reaction without involvement of the substrate. The presented approach allows for the fabrication of different ionic layers, decoupled from the substrate and offering new, potentially interesting properties.
