Abstract
An enantioselective methodology to construct trans-Diels-Alder scaffolds by organocatalysis with excellent selectivity, high yield and up to five contiguous stereocenters is presented. The reaction concept integrates the halogen effect and a novel discovered pseudo-halogen effect to direct an endo-selective, secondary-amine catalyzed Diels-Alder reaction allowing for the subsequent formation of trans-Diels-Alder cycloadducts featuring the norcarene scaffold. The methodology relies on the reaction between an in situ generated trienamine and an α-brominated or α-pseudo-halogenated enone to form a fleeting cis-Diels-Alder intermediate. The endo-transition state-enhanced by the (pseudo-)halogen effect-sets the stereochemistry that allows for a subsequent SN 2-like reaction at a tertiary center to obtain the trans-Diels-Alder scaffold. The mechanism was investigated and supported by experimental results as well as computational studies.

Abstract
The principle of vinylogy states that the electronic effects of a functional group in a molecule are possibly transmitted to a distal position through interposed conjugated multiple bonds. As an emblematic case, the nucleophilic character of a π-extended enolate-type chain system may be relayed from the legitimate α-site to the vinylogous γ, ε, ..., ω remote carbon sites along the chain, provided that suitable HOMO-raising strategies are adopted to transform the unsaturated pronucleophilic precursors into the reactive polyenolate species. On the other hand, when "unnatural" carbonyl ipso-sites are activated as nucleophiles (umpolung), vinylogation extends the nucleophilic character to "unnatural" β, δ, ... remote sites. Merging the principle of vinylogy with activation modalities and concepts such as iminium ion/enamine organocatalysis, NHC-organocatalysis, cooperative organo/metal catalysis, bifunctional organocatalysis, dicyanoalkylidene activation, and organocascade reactions represents an impressive step forward for all vinylogous transformations. This review article celebrates this evolutionary progress, by collecting, comparing, and critically describing the achievements made over the nine year period 2010-2018, in the generation of vinylogous enolate-type donor substrates and their use in chemical synthesis.

Abstract
Nitrogen-containing heterocycles (NCH), constitute an important group of molecules, which are widely extended in whole chemical space. These compounds are of great interest due to their diverse biological activities. Currently, many compounds derived from NCH are used as powerful drugs for the treatment of diseases ranging from bactericides to anticancer agents. During last decade, the enantioselective synthesis of numerous heterocyclic compounds has been achieved through the use of chiral organocatalysts. The present contribution explores the application of the aminocatalysis towards the synthesis of NCH, particularly through the trienamine catalysis.

Abstract
In this manuscript, a novel, decarboxylative Michael reaction between α-substituted azlactones and chromone-3-carboxylic acids is described. The reaction proceeds in a sequence Michael addition followed by decarboxylative deprotonation, and it results in the formation of chromanones bearing an azlactone structural unit. The possibility of transforming an azlactone moiety into a protected α,α-disubstituted α-amino acid derivative is also demonstrated.

Abstract
In this work we have found that a BODIPY can be used as an electron withdrawing group for the activation of double bonds in asymmetric catalysis. The synthesis of cyclohexyl derivatives containing a BODIPY unit can easily be achieved via trienamine catalysis. This allows a new different asymmetric synthesis of BODIPY derivatives and opens the door to future transformation of this useful fluorophore. In addition, the Quantum Chemistry calculations and mechanistic studies provide insights into the role of BODIPY as an EWG.

Abstract
An efficient synthesis protocol is presented for accessing quaternized α-amino acids in chiral, nonracemic form via diastereoselective malonate alkylation followed by C- to N-transposition. The key stereodifferentiating step involves a diastereoselective alkylation of an α-monosubstituted malonate-imidazolidinone, which is followed first by a chemoselective malonate PMB ester removal and then a Curtius rearrangement to provide the transposition. The method demonstrates a high product ee (89-99% for eight cases) for quaternizing a range of proteinogenic α-amino acids. The stereogenicity in targets 5a-i supports previous conclusions that the diastereoselective alkylation step proceeds via an α-substituted malonate-imidazolidinone enolate in its Z-configuration, with the auxiliary in an s-transC-N conformation.

Abstract
In the Diels–Alder reactions of 2,4-dienones with two dienophiles, cinchona alkaloid acts as an efficient bifunctional catalyst by generating an extended trienamine π-conjugated system and by orienting the dienophile at an appropriate position for a cycloaddition reaction.

Abstract
A dienamine-mediated enantioselective 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition catalyzed by a chiral prolinol silyl ether catalyst has been developed. Removal of the benzamide group of the intermediates could furnish chiral C-1 substituted tetrahydroisoquinolines (see scheme) in high yields and excellent stereoselectivities.

Abstract
Add acetic acid: A highly stereoselective N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-catalyzed formal [4+2] annulation between α,β-unsaturated aldehydes and imidazolidinones for the synthesis of imidazoles has been developed. Acetic acid serves as a key additive to achieve high chemoselectivity for the formal [4+2] annulation product.

Abstract
Electron-deficient 1-aza-1,3-butadienes containing a 1,2-benzoisothiazole-1,1-dioxide or 1,2,3-benzoxathiazine-2,2-dioxide motif act as regio- and chemoselective dienophiles in normal-electron-demand Diels-Alder reactions with HOMO-raised trienamines, rather than typical 4π-participation in inverse-electron-demand versions. The enantioenriched cycloadducts could be efficiently converted to spiro or fused frameworks with high structural and stereogenic complexity by a sequential aza-benzoin reaction or other transformations.

Abstract
The Diels-Alder reactions of cyclic linear and cross-conjugated trienamines with oxindoles have been studied with density functional theory [M06-2X/def2-TZVPP/IEFPCM//B97D/6-31+G(d,p)/IEFPCM]. These reactions are found to proceed in a stepwise fashion. Computations revealed that these transformations involve complex mechanisms including zwitterionic intermediates and several unstable alternate cycloadducts arising from (2 + 2) cycloadditions and hetero-Diels-Alder reactions. The observed regio- and stereochemistry can be rationalized by a combination of kinetic and thermodynamic control.
