Abstract
The one-electron reduction of the nonheme iron(III)-hydroperoxo complex, [FeIII (OOH)(L5 2 )]2+ (L5 2 =N-methyl-N,N',N'-tris(2-pyridylmethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine), carried out at -70 °C results in the release of dioxygen and in the formation of [FeII (OH)(L5 2 )]+ following a bimolecular process. This reaction can be performed either with cobaltocene as chemical reductant, or electrochemically. These experimental observations are consistent with the disproportionation of the hydroperoxo group in the putative FeII (OOH) intermediate generated upon reduction of the FeIII (OOH) starting complex. One plausible mechanistic scenario is that this disproportionation reaction follows an O-O heterolytic cleavage pathway via a FeIV -oxo species.

Abstract
The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the essential module in energy conversion and storage devices such as electrolyzer, rechargeable metal-air batteries and regenerative fuel cells. The adsorption energy scaling relations between the reaction intermediates, however, impose a large intrinsic overpotential and sluggish reaction kinetics on OER catalysts. Developing advanced electrocatalysts with high activity and stability based on non-noble metal materials is still a grand challenge. Central to the rational design of novel and high-efficiency catalysts is the development and understanding of quantitative structure-activity relationships, which correlate the catalytic activities with structural and electronic descriptors. This paper comprehensively reviews the benchmark descriptors for OER electrolysis, aiming to give an in-depth understanding on the origins of the electrocatalytic activity of the OER and further contribute to building the theory of electrocatalysis. Meanwhile, the cutting-edge research frontiers for proposing new OER paradigms and crucial strategies to circumvent the scaling relationship are also summarized. Challenges, opportunities and perspectives are discussed, intending to shed some light on the rational design concepts and advance the development of more efficient catalysts for enhancing OER performance.

Abstract
μ‐1,2‐peroxo‐bridged diiron(III) intermediates P are proposed as reactive intermediates in various biological oxidation reactions. In sMMO, P acts as an electrophile, and performs hydrogen atom and oxygen atom transfers to electron‐rich substrates. In cyanobacterial ADO, however, P is postulated to react by nucleophilic attack on electrophilic carbon atoms. In biomimetic studies, the ability of μ‐1,2‐peroxo‐bridged dimetal complexes of Fe, Co, Ni and Cu to act as nucleophiles that effect deformylation of aldehydes is documented. By performing reactivity and theoretical studies on an end‐on μ‐1,2‐peroxodicobalt(III) complex 1 involving a non‐heme ligand system, L1, supported on a Sn6O6 stannoxane core, we now show that a peroxo‐bridged dimetal complex can also be a reactive electrophile. The observed electrophilic chemistry, which is induced by the constraints provided by the Sn6O6 core, represents a new domain for metal−peroxide reactivity.

Abstract
High-valent metal-oxo species with multiply-bonded M-O groups have been proposed as key intermediates in many biological and abiological catalytic oxidation reactions. These intermediates are implicated as active oxidants in alkane hydroxylation, olefin epoxidation and other oxidation reactions. For example, [FeivO(porphyrinato•-)]+ cofactors bearing π-radical porphyrinato•- ligands oxidize organic substrates in cytochrome P450 enzymes, which are common to many life forms. Likewise, high-valent Mn-oxo species are active for H2O oxidation in photosystem II. The chemistry of these native reactive species has inspired chemists to prepare highly oxidized transition-metal complexes as functional mimics. Although many synthetic Fe-O and Mn-O complexes now exist, the analogous oxo complexes of the late transition metals (groups 9-11) are rare. Indeed, late-transition-metal-oxo complexes of tetragonal (fourfold) symmetry should be electronically unstable, a rule commonly referred to as the 'oxo wall'. A few late metal-oxos have been prepared by targeting other symmetries or unusual spin states. These complexes have been studied using spectroscopic and theoretical methods. This Review describes mononuclear non-haem Fe-O and Mn-O species, the nature of the oxo wall and recent advances in the preparation of oxo complexes of Co, Ni and Cu beyond the oxo wall.

Abstract
The synthesis, spectroscopic characterization (infrared, electron paramagnetic resonance and X-ray absorption spectroscopies) and density functional theoretical calculations of a tetranuclear cobalt complex Co4L1 involving a nonheme ligand system, L1, supported on a stannoxane core are reported. Co4L1, similar to the previously reported hexanuclear cobalt complex Co6L2, shows a unique ability to catalyze dioxygen (O2) reduction, where product selectivity can be changed from a preferential 4e-/4H+ dioxygen-reduction (to water) to a 2e-/2H+ process (to hydrogen peroxide) only by increasing the temperature from -50 to 30 °C. Detailed mechanistic insights were obtained on the basis of kinetic studies on the overall catalytic reaction as well as by low-temperature spectroscopic (UV-Vis, resonance Raman and X-ray absorption spectroscopies) trapping of the end-on μ-1,2-peroxodicobalt(iii) intermediate 1. The Co4L1- and Co6L2-mediated O2-reduction reactions exhibit different reaction kinetics, and yield different ratios of the 2e-/2H+ and 4e-/4H+ products at -50 °C, which can be attributed to the different stabilities of the μ-1,2-peroxodicobalt(iii) intermediates formed upon dioxygen activation in the two cases. The deep mechanistic insights into the transition-metal mediated dioxygen reduction process that are obtained from the present study should serve as useful and broadly applicable principles for future design of more efficient catalysts in fuel cells.

Abstract
The activation of dioxygen by FeII(Me3TACN)(S2SiMe2) (1) is reported. Reaction of 1 with O2 at -135 °C in 2-MeTHF generates a thiolate-ligated (peroxo)diiron complex FeIII2(O2)(Me3TACN)2(S2SiMe2)2 (2) that was characterized by UV-vis (λmax = 300, 390, 530, 723 nm), Mössbauer (δ = 0.53, |ΔEQ| = 0.76 mm s-1), resonance Raman (RR) (ν(O-O) = 849 cm-1), and X-ray absorption (XAS) spectroscopies. Complex 2 is distinct from the outer-sphere oxidation product 1ox (UV-vis (λmax = 435, 520, 600 nm), Mössbauer (δ = 0.45, |ΔEQ| = 3.6 mm s-1), and EPR (S = 5/2, g = [6.38, 5.53, 1.99])), obtained by one-electron oxidation of 1. Cleavage of the peroxo O-O bond can be initiated either photochemically or thermally to produce a new species assigned as an FeIV(O) complex, FeIV(O)(Me3TACN)(S2SiMe2) (3), which was identified by UV-vis (λmax = 385, 460, 890 nm), Mössbauer (δ = 0.21, |ΔEQ| = 1.57 mm s-1), RR (ν(FeIV═O) = 735 cm-1), and X-ray absorption spectroscopies, as well as reactivity patterns. Reaction of 3 at low temperature with H atom donors gives a new species, FeIII(OH)(Me3TACN)(S2SiMe2) (4). Complex 4 was independently synthesized from 1 by the stoichiometric addition of a one-electron oxidant and a hydroxide source. This work provides a rare example of dioxygen activation at a mononuclear nonheme iron(II) complex that produces both FeIII-O-O-FeIII and FeIV(O) species in the same reaction with O2. It also demonstrates the feasibility of forming Fe/O2 intermediates with strongly donating sulfur ligands while avoiding immediate sulfur oxidation.

Abstract
Formation of the O-O bond is considered the critical step in oxidative water cleavage to produce dioxygen. High-valent metal complexes with terminal oxo (oxido) ligands are commonly regarded as instrumental for oxygen evolution, but direct experimental evidence is lacking. Herein, we describe the formation of the O-O bond in solution, from non-heme, N5 -coordinate oxoiron(IV) species. Oxygen evolution from oxoiron(IV) is instantaneous once meta-chloroperbenzoic acid is administered in excess. Oxygen-isotope labeling reveals two sources of dioxygen, pointing to mechanistic branching between HAT (hydrogen atom transfer)-initiated free-radical pathways of the peroxides, which are typical of catalase-like reactivity, and iron-borne O-O coupling, which is unprecedented for non-heme/peroxide systems. Interpretation in terms of [FeIV (O)] and [FeV (O)] being the resting and active principles of the O-O coupling, respectively, concurs with fundamental mechanistic ideas of (electro-) chemical O-O coupling in water oxidation catalysis (WOC), indicating that central mechanistic motifs of WOC can be mimicked in a catalase/peroxidase setting.

Abstract
Photoirradiation of an acetonitrile solution containing p-benzoquinone derivatives (X-Q) as plastoquinone analogs, a nonheme iron(II) complex, [(N4Py)FeII]2+ (N4Py = N, N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)- N-bis(2-pyridyl)methylamine), and H2O afforded the evolution of O2 and the formation of the corresponding hydroquinone derivatives (X-QH2) quantitatively. During the photodriven oxidation of water by X-Q, [(N4Py)FeII]2+ was oxidized by the excited state of X-Q to produce the iron(IV)-oxo complex ([(N4Py)FeIV(O)]2+) quantitatively. The concentration of [(N4Py)FeIV(O)]2+ remained virtually the same during the repeated cycles of photodriven oxidation of water by X-Q. [(N4Py)FeIV(O)]2+ was further oxidized by the excited state of X-Q to [(N4Py)FeV(O)]3+; this FeV-oxo species is proposed as an active oxidant that affects the water oxidation. The photocatalytic mechanism of the water oxidation by X-Q with [(N4Py)FeII]2+ was clarified by detecting intermediates using various spectroscopic techniques, such as transient absorption and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements. To the best of our knowledge, the present study reports the first example of a functional model of Photosystem II (PSII) using X-Q as plastoquinone analogs in the photocatalytic oxidation of water.

Abstract
Although the oxidation of water is efficiently catalysed by the oxygen-evolving complex in photosystem II (refs 1 and 2), it remains one of the main bottlenecks when aiming for synthetic chemical fuel production powered by sunlight or electricity. Consequently, the development of active and stable water oxidation catalysts is crucial, with heterogeneous systems considered more suitable for practical use and their homogeneous counterparts more suitable for targeted, molecular-level design guided by mechanistic understanding. Research into the mechanism of water oxidation has resulted in a range of synthetic molecular catalysts, yet there remains much interest in systems that use abundant, inexpensive and environmentally benign metals such as iron (the most abundant transition metal in the Earth's crust and found in natural and synthetic oxidation catalysts). Water oxidation catalysts based on mononuclear iron complexes have been explored, but they often deactivate rapidly and exhibit relatively low activities. Here we report a pentanuclear iron complex that efficiently and robustly catalyses water oxidation with a turnover frequency of 1,900 per second, which is about three orders of magnitude larger than that of other iron-based catalysts. Electrochemical analysis confirms the redox flexibility of the system, characterized by six different oxidation states between Fe(II)5 and Fe(III)5; the Fe(III)5 state is active for oxidizing water. Quantum chemistry calculations indicate that the presence of adjacent active sites facilitates O-O bond formation with a reaction barrier of less than ten kilocalories per mole. Although the need for a high overpotential and the inability to operate in water-rich solutions limit the practicality of the present system, our findings clearly indicate that efficient water oxidation catalysts based on iron complexes can be created by ensuring that the system has redox flexibility and contains adjacent water-activation sites.

Abstract
The non-haem iron complex α-[Fe(II)(CF3SO3)2(mcp)] (mcp=(N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,2-cis-diaminocyclohexane) reacts with Ce(IV) to oxidize water to O2, representing an iron-based functional model for the oxygen evolving complex of photosystem II. Here we trap an intermediate, characterized by cryospray ionization high resolution mass spectrometry and resonance Raman spectroscopy, and formulated as [(mcp)Fe(IV)(O)(μ-O)Ce(IV)(NO3)3](+), the first example of a well-characterized inner-sphere complex to be formed in cerium(IV)-mediated water oxidation. The identification of this reactive Fe(IV)-O-Ce(IV) adduct may open new pathways to validate mechanistic notions of an analogous Mn(V)-O-Ca(II) unit in the oxygen evolving complex that is responsible for carrying out the key O-O bond forming step.

Abstract
Mononuclear non-haem iron(III)-superoxo species (Fe(III)-O2(-·)) have been implicated as key intermediates in the catalytic cycles of dioxygen activation by non-haem iron enzymes. Although non-haem iron(III)-superoxo species have been trapped and characterized spectroscopically in enzymatic and biomimetic reactions, no structural information has yet been obtained. Here we report the isolation, spectroscopic characterization and crystal structure of a mononuclear side-on (η(2)) iron(III)-superoxo complex with a tetraamido macrocyclic ligand. The non-haem iron(III)-superoxo species undergoes both electrophilic and nucleophilic oxidation reactions, as well as O2-transfer between metal complexes. In the O2-transfer reaction, the iron(III)-superoxo complex transfers the bound O2 unit to a manganese(III) analogue, resulting in the formation of a manganese(IV)-peroxo complex, which is characterized structurally and spectroscopically as a mononuclear side-on (η(2)) manganese(IV)-peroxo complex. The difference in the redox distribution between the metal ions and O2 in iron(III)-superoxo and manganese(IV)-peroxo complexes is rationalized using density functional theory calculations.

Abstract
Selective functionalization of unactivated C-H bonds and ammonia production are extremely important industrial processes. A range of metalloenyzmes achieve these challenging tasks in biology by activating dioxygen and dinitrogen using cheap and abundant transition metals, such as iron, copper and manganese. High-valent iron-oxo and -nitrido complexes act as active intermediates in many of these processes. The generation of well-described model compounds can provide vital insights into the mechanism of such enzymatic reactions. Advances in the chemistry of model high-valent iron-oxo and -nitrido systems can be related to our understanding of the biological systems.
