Synthesis and Helical Structure of Spiroborate-Based Double-Stranded Helicate with Oligophenol Strands Bearing Bipyridine Units

A supramolecular double-helix based on complementary phosphate-guanidinium pairing

A double-helical supramolecular structure was formed by self-assembly of 1,1'-binaphthyl-based bisguanidines and bisphosphoric acids. Interestingly the homochiral (S,S) + (S,S)-pair forms a left-handed double-helix, while the heterochiral (S,S) + (R,R)-pair forms a non-helical dimer.

Single- and double-helices of α,α'-dibenzylaminotripyrrin: solution and solid state studies

The dimeric association of α,α'-di(benzylamino)tripyrrin in chloroform was found to be 40 times less effective than that of previously reported α,α'-dianilinotripyrrin, which, however, led us to observe the co-crystal structure of single and double helix forms. Attachment of chiral phenylethylamines on the same tripyrrin platform was also performed to induce helical chirality.

Water-Mediated Reversible Control of Three-State Double-Stranded Titanium(IV) Helicates

A stimuli-responsible reversible structural transformation is of key importance in biological systems. We now report a unique water-mediated reversible transformation among three discrete double-stranded dinuclear titanium(IV) achiral meso- and chiral rac-helicates linked by a mono(μ-oxo) or a bis(μ-hydroxo) bridge between the titanium ions through hydration/dehydration or its combination with a water-mediated dynamic cleavage/re-formation of the titanium-phenoxide (Ti-OPh) bonds. The bis(μ-hydroxo) bridged titanium(IV) meso-helicate prepared from two tetraphenol strands with titanium(IV) oxide was readily dehydrated in CD₃CN containing a small amount of water upon heating, accompanied by Ti-OPh bond cleavage/re-formation catalyzed by water, resulting in the formation of the mono(μ-oxo)-bridged rac-helicate, which reverted back to the original bis(μ-hydroxo)-bridged meso-helicate upon hydration in aqueous CD₃CN. These reversible transformations between the meso- and rac-helicates were also promoted in the presence of a catalytic amount of an acid, which remarkably accelerated the reactions at lower temperature. Interestingly, in anhydrous CD₃CN, the bis(μ-hydroxo)-bridged meso-helicate was further slowly converted to a different helicate, while its meso-helicate framework was maintained, namely the mono(μ-oxo)-bridged meso-helicate, through dehydration upon heating and its meso to meso transformation was significantly accelerated in the presence of cryptand[2.2.1], which contributes to removing Na⁺ ions coordinated to the helicate. Upon cooling, the backward meso to meso transformation took place via hydration. Hence, three different, discrete double-stranded chiral rac- and achiral meso-titanium(IV) helicates linked by a mono(μ-oxo) or a bis(μ-hydroxo) bridge were successfully generated in a controllable manner by a change in the water content of the reaction media.

Helical polymer self-assembly and chiral nanostructure formation

This review surveys recent progress towards robust chiral nanostructure fabrication techniques using synthetic helical polymers, the unique inferred properties that these materials possess, and their intricate connection to natural, biological chirality.

Conjugated double helices via self-dimerization of α,α'-dianilinotripyrrins

A new motif for artificial double helices was developed on the basis of α,α'-disubstituted tripyrrin. α,α'-Dibromotripyrrin 3 was prepared by gentle bromination at the pyrrolic α-positions of 5,10-diphenyltripyrrane followed by oxidation with DDQ. Nucleophilic substitution reactions of 3 with anilines proceeded efficiently to furnish a series of α,α'-dianilinotripyrrins 4-11, which displayed monomeric and dimeric forms depending upon the solvent used for crystallization and the structures of the substituted anilines. Dimeric forms show double helical structures with smooth π-conjugation as indicated by their absorption spectra. van't-Hoff plot analyses revealed that the dimerizations in CDCl3 are enthalpy-driven. Larger association constants of the dimerization are attained for 3,5-di-t-butylanilino- and 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)anilino-substituted tripyrrins (7 and 8) via additional multiple intermolecular interactions. In a nonpolar and aprotic solvent, tripyrrins (9 and 10) bearing bulkier 1-naphthylamino and mesitylamino groups do not dimerize but undergo unique tautomerization.

Effect of the Metal Ion on the Enantioselectivity and Linkage Isomerization of Thiosemicarbazone Helicates

The effect of the metal ion and ligand design on the enantioselectivity and linkage isomerization of neutral cobalt and zinc bisthiosemicarbazone metallohelicates has been investigated in this work. The electrochemical synthesis has afforded the enantioselective formation of chirally pure cobalt helicates, and the ΛΛ isomer of a single enantiomer has been crystallized as only product for the cobalt methyl-substituted thiosemicarbazone helicate. Interestingly linkage isomers have been formed from zinc ethyl-substituted thiosemicarbazone helicate enantiomers for the first time. The co-existence of these isomers has been evaluated from the point of view of both experimental results and computational calculations.

Supramolecular Helical Systems: Helical Assemblies of Small Molecules, Foldamers, and Polymers with Chiral Amplification and Their Functions

In this review, we describe the recent advances in supramolecular helical assemblies formed from chiral and achiral small molecules, oligomers (foldamers), and helical and nonhelical polymers from the viewpoints of their formations with unique chiral phenomena, such as amplification of chirality during the dynamic helically assembled processes, properties, and specific functionalities, some of which have not been observed in or achieved by biological systems. In addition, a brief historical overview of the helical assemblies of small molecules and remarkable progress in the synthesis of single-stranded and multistranded helical foldamers and polymers, their properties, structures, and functions, mainly since 2009, will also be described.

Synthesis of a double-stranded spiroborate helicate bearing stilbene units and its photoresponsive behaviour

The sodium ion-triggered extension and contraction motions along with photo-induced cis–trans isomerisation of a photoresponsive spiroborate-based double-stranded helicate were investigated.

Chiral tether-mediated stabilization and helix-sense control of complementary metallo-double helices

A series of novel PtII-linked double helices were prepared by inter- or intrastrand ligand-exchange reactions of the complementary duplexes composed of chiral or achiral amidine dimer and achiral carboxylic acid dimer strands joined by trans-PtII-acetylide complexes with PPh3 ligands using chiral and achiral chelating diphosphines. The structure and stability of the PtII-linked double helices were highly dependent on the diphosphine structures. An interstrand ligand exchange took place with chiral and achiral 1,3-diphosphine-based ligands, resulting in trans-PtII-bridged double helices, whose helical structures were quite stable even in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) due to the interstrand cross-link, whereas a 1,2-diphosphine-based ligand produced non-cross-linked cis-PtII-linked duplexes, resulting from an intrastrand ligand-exchange that readily dissociated into single strands in DMSO. When enantiopure 1,3-diphosphine-based ligands were used, the resulting trans-PtII-bridged double helices adopted a preferred-handed helical sense biased by the chirality of the bridged diphosphines. Interestingly, the interstrand ligand exchange with racemic 1,3-diphosphine toward an optically-active PtII-linked duplex, composed of chiral amidine and achiral carboxylic acid strands, was found to proceed in a diastereoselective manner, thus forming complete homochiral trans-PtII-bridged double helices via a unique chiral self-sorting.

Programmed multiple complexation for the creation of helical structures from acyclic phenol-bipyridine oligomer ligands

Two new multidentate ligands, H3L(1) and H4L(2), possessing bipyridine-phenol repetitive units were designed so that the multi-metal complexation could produce a single-helical structure in a pre-programmed fashion. The ligands were synthesized by successive palladium-catalyzed coupling reactions. The complexation of H3L(1) with zinc(II) and nickel(II) acetate afforded [L(1)Zn2(OAc)] and [(L(1))2Ni4](OAc)2, respectively. Each of the ligand moieties in these complexes formed a one-turn single helix. The zinc(II) complex [L(1)Zn2(OAc)] underwent a helix compression-extension motion in solution. The complexation of the H3L(1) ligand with iron(III) chloride gave a dinuclear complex [(HL(1))2Fe2Cl2] with a non-helical dimeric structure. The longer ligand H4L(2) afforded a trinuclear complex [L(2)Zn3(OAc)2] with a 1.5-turn single-helical structure upon complexation with zinc(II) acetate. The reaction of the H4L(2) ligand with cobalt(II) acetate under aerobic conditions gave a mixed valence complex [L(2)Co3(OAc)3(OMe)], which had two trivalent and one divalent cobalt ions. The structural features of the trinuclear complexes significantly depended on the metals; [L(2)Co3(OAc)3(OMe)] had a helical pitch of 7.6 Å, which was almost twice that of [L(2)Zn3(OAc)2] (4.0 Å).

Chirality transfer in propeller-shaped cyclen-calcium(II) complexes: metal-coordinating and ion-pairing anion procedures

A series of quadruple-stranded Na(+) and Ca(2+) complexes with octadentate cyclen ligands was synthesized to produce complexes that contained four different side-arm combinations (one triazole-coumarin group and three pyridine groups (1), four pyridine groups (2), one triazole-coumarin group and three quinoline groups (3), and four quinoline groups (4)). X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed that no significant changes occurred in the stereostructure of these complexes upon replacing one pyridine group with a triazole-coumarin moiety, or by replacing Na(+) ions with Ca(2+) ions, although the coordination number of the complexes in the solid state decreased when pyridine groups were replaced by quinoline groups. In solution, all of the side arms were arranged in a propeller-like pattern to yield an enantiomer pair of Δ and Λ forms in each metal complex. The addition of a tert-butoxycarbonyl (Boc)-protected amino acid anion, that is, a coordinative chiral carboxylate anion, to the cyclen-Ca(2+) complex induced circular dichroism (CD) signals in the aromatic region by forming a 1:1 mixture of diastereomeric ternary complexes with opposite complex chirality, whilst the corresponding Na(+) complexes rarely showed any response. In complexes 1-Ca(2+) and 3-Ca(2+), this chirality-transfer process was efficiently followed by considering the induction of the CD signals at two different wavelengths, that is, the coumarin-chromophore region and the aza-aromatic region. The sign and intensity of the CD signal were significantly dependent on both the nature of the aza-aromatic moiety and the enantiomeric purity of the external anion. These Ca(2+) complexes worked as effective probes for the determination of the enantiomeric excess of the chiral anion. The cyclen-Ca(2+) complexes also interacted with the non-coordinative Δ-TRISPHAT anion through an ion-pairing mechanism to achieve chirality transfer from the anion to the metal complex; both complexes 1-Ca(2+) and 3-Ca(2+) clearly showed induced CD signals in the coumarin-chromophore region, owing to ion-paring interactions with the Δ-TRISPHAT anion. Thus, the proper combination of an octadentate cyclen ligand and a metal center demonstrated effective chirality transfer.
