N-Heterocyclic tridentate aromatic ligands bound to [Ln(hexafluoroacetylacetonate)3] units: thermodynamic, structural, and luminescent properties

Terpyridyl-Imidazole Based Ligand Coordinated to Ln(Hexafluoroacetyl acetonate)3 Core: Synthesis, Structural Characterization, Luminescence Properties, and Thermosensing Behaviors in Solution and PMMA Film

A new array of ternary lanthanide complexes of the form [Ln(hfa)3(tpy-HImzphen)] have been synthesized and thoroughly characterized wherein Ln = LaIII (1), EuIII (2), SmIII (3), and TbIII (4); hfa = hexafluoroacetylacetonate; and tpy-HImzphen = 2-(4-[2,2':6',2″]terpyridin-4'-yl-phenyl)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole. Incorporation of tpy-HImzphen onto the Ln-hfa moiety induced a bathochromic shift of the absorption window of the complexes into the visible region. Extensive investigations of the luminescence characteristics have been conducted both at RT and at 77 K to understand the deactivation pathways of the complexes. Both steady-state and time-resolved emission spectral behaviors indicate four distinctive behaviors upon incorporation of tpy-HImzphen onto the lanthanide core, viz., a huge red-shift of the ligand-centered peak for LaIII; almost complete energy transfer for EuIII; very little energy transfer for SmIII, while reverse energy transfer in the case of TbIII. In addition, the EuIII-complex exhibits its excellence in luminescence thermometry in the solution state as well as in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) thin films. The thermosensitive luminescence response in solution was further utilized to mimic set-reset flip-flop logic operation. A plausible energy transfer scheme has been devised to explain dissimilar luminescence behaviors in the complexes. The role of LMCT was also considered for the observed thermosensing property of the Eu(III) complex.

Tuning Selectivity and Stability in Heteroleptic Lanthanide Adducts by Ligand Design

Terdentate ligands L10-L14 and their heteroleptic [LkLn(hfac)3] complexes (Ln = La, Eu, Gd, Er, or Y; H-hfac = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoropentane-2,4-dione) exhibit multifactorial correlations between the ligand's structural frameworks, including their level of preorganization and steric congestion and their affinities and selectivities for catching the trivalent lanthanide containers [Ln(hfac)3]. The polyaromatic ligand scaffolds could be stepwise modulated via lanthanide-template synthetic strategies, using intermolecular rhodium-catalyzed insertion reactions. The increasing level of preorganization along the L10 → L11 → L12 series leads to a duality in which larger thermodynamic formation constants with lanthanides in CD2Cl2 are accompanied by an unexpected decrease in the Ln-N affinities in the solid state, which could be assigned to a limited match between the lanthanide size and the enlarged preorganized cavities. On the contrary, a reduced stability is induced by the connection of additional methyl groups at position 1 of the benzimidazole moieties in L13 and L14, which is accompanied by an optimization of metal-nitrogen bond lengths. This study contributes to the rational design of highly stable neutral heteroleptic lanthanide β-diketonate adducts that resist dissociation in solution, a prerequisite for photophysical applications using these highly luminescent systems at the molecular level.

Symmetry and Rigidity for Boosting Erbium-Based Molecular Light-Upconversion in Solution

Previously limited to highly symmetrical homoleptic triple-helical complexes [Er(Lk)3 ]3+ , where Lk are polyaromatic tridentate ligands, single-center molecular-based upconversion using linear optics and exploiting the excited-state absorption mechanism (ESA) greatly benefits from the design of stable and low-symmetrical [LkEr(hfa)3 ] heteroleptic adducts (hfa- =hexafluoroacetylacetonate anion). Depending on (i) the extended π-electron delocalization, (ii) the flexibility and (iii) the heavy atom effect brought by the bound ligand Lk, the near-infrared (801 nm) to visible green (542 nm) upconversion quantum yield measured for [LkEr(hfa)3 ] in solution at room temperature can be boosted by up to three orders of magnitude.

Rational Loading of Linear Multi-Site Receptors with Functional Lanthanide Containers: The Missing Link between Oligomers and Polymers

Although metal-containing organic polymers are becoming essential for modern applications in lighting, catalysis, and electronic devices, very little is known about their controlled metallic loading, which mainly limits their design to empirical mixing followed by characterization and often hampers rational developments. Focusing on the appealing optical and magnetic properties of 4f-block cations, the host-guest reactions leading to linear lanthanidopolymers already display some unexpected dependence of the binding-site affinities on the length of the organic polymer backbone: a drift usually, and erroneously, assigned to intersite cooperativity. Taking advantage of the parameters obtained for the stepwise thermodynamic loading of a series of rigid linear multi-tridentate organic receptors with increasing length, N = 1 (monomer L1), N = 2 (dimer L2), and N = 3 (trimer L3), with [Ln(hfa)3] containers in solution (Ln = trivalent lanthanide cations, hfa- = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-pentane-2,4-dione anion), it is demonstrated here that the site-binding model, based on the Potts-Ising approach, successfully predicts the binding properties of the novel soluble polymer P2N made up of nine successive binding units . An in-depth examination of the photophysical properties of these lanthanidopolymers shows impressive UV→vis downshifting quantum yields for the europium-based red luminescence, which can be modulated by the length of the polymeric chain.

Preorganized Polyaromatic Soft Terdentate Hosts for the Capture of [Ln(β-diketonate)3 ] Guests in Solution

The concept of preorganization is famous in coordination chemistry for having transformed flexible bidentate 2,2'-bipyridine scaffolds into rigid 1,10-phenanthroline platforms. The resulting boosted affinities for d-block cations has successfully paved the way for the design of a wealth of functional complexes, devices and materials for analysis and optics. Its extension toward terdentate homologues adapted for the selective complexation of f-block cations with larger coordination numbers remains more overlooked. The resulting rigidification of 2,6-bis(1-methyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)pyridine ligands (L1-L7) produces the highly preorganized and extended polyaromatic benzo[4',5']imidazo[1',2' : 1,2]pyrido[3,4-b]benzo[4,5]imidazo[1,2-h][1,7]naphthyridines (L8-L11) receptors, which offer some novel and rare opportunities for efficiently complexing trivalent lanthanides with polyaromatic soft terimine ligands. The crystal structures of the stable heteroleptic [LkLn(hfac)₃ ] adducts (Lk=L1, L8, L9; Ln=La, Eu, Gd, Er, Yb, Y; H-hfac=1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoropentane-2,4-dione) show a drastic decrease in the Ln-N bond valences upon replacement of the flexible ligand L1 with its preorganized counterparts L8 and L9. This points to a limited match between the preorganized cavity and the entering [Ln(hfac)₃ ] lanthanide containers. However, thermodynamic studies conducted in dichloromethane reach the opposite conclusion, with an improved affinity, by up to three orders of magnitude for catching Ln(hfac)₃ when L1 is replaced by the preorganized L8-L9 receptors. The key to the enigma lies in the removal of the energy penalty which accompanies the formation of flexible [L1Ln(hfac)₃ ] complexes in solution. This driving force overcomes the poor match between the preorganized terdentate N^∩ N^∩ N cavity in L8 and L9 and the size of trivalent lanthanides. As planned, the rigid, planar and extended π-conjugated system found in L8 and L9 shifts the ligand-centered absorption bands by about 5000 cm^-1 toward lower energies, a crucial point if these stable [L8Ln(hfac)₃ ] and [L9Ln(hfac)₃ ] platforms have to be considered for the visible sensitization of luminescent lanthanides in metallopolymers.

Size Selectivity in Heterolanthanide Molecular Complexes with a Ditopic Ligand

The similar reactivity of lanthanides generally leads to statistically populated polynuclear complexes, making the rational design of ordered hetero-lanthanide compounds extremely challenging. Here we report on the site selectivity in hetero-lanthanide tetranuclear complexes afforded by the relatively simple ditopic pyterpyNO ligand (4'-(4-pyridil)-2,2':6',2"-terpyridine N-oxide). The sequential room temperature reaction of RE₂ (tta)₆ (pyterpyNO)₂ (where RE=Y, (1); Eu, (2), Dy, (3) Htta=2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone) with La(tta)₃ dme (dme=dimethoxyethane) yielded Y₂ La₂ (tta)₁₂ (pyterpyNO)₂ (4), Dy₂ La₂ (tta)₁₂ (pyterpyNO)₂ (5) and Eu₂ La₂ (tta)₁₂ (pyterpyNO)₂ (6). Single crystals X-ray diffraction studies showed that 4, 5 and 6 are isostructural, featuring a tetranuclear structure with two different metal coordination sites with coordination numbers 8 (CN8) and 9 (CN9). The two smaller cations are mainly bridged by the O-donor atoms of the NO groups of two pyterpyNO ligands (CN8), while the larger lanthanum centres are bound by a terpyridine unit (CN9). Size selectivity has been studied with structural and magnetic studies in the solid state and through ¹⁹ F NMR and photoluminescence studies in solution, showing a direct dependence on the difference of ionic radii of the ions and yielding a 91 % selectivity for 4. Furthermore, ¹⁹ F NMR, X-ray and PL studies pointed out that the nature of the product is independent from the synthetic route for compound Eu₂ Y₂ (tta)₁₂ (pyterpyNO)₂ (7), keeping the ion selectivity also for a self-assembly reaction. Unexpectedly, these studies have evidenced that selectivity is not exclusively governed by electrostatic interactions related to size dimensions.

Bottom-Up Approach for the Rational Loading of Linear Oligomers and Polymers with Lanthanides

The adducts between luminescent lanthanide tris(β-diketonate)s and diimine or triimine ligands have been explored exhaustively for their exceptional photophysical properties. Their formation, stability, and structures in solution, together with the design of extended metallopolymers exploiting these building blocks, remain, however, elusive. The systematic peripheral substitution of tridentate 2,6-bis(benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine binding units (Lk = L1-L5), taken as building blocks for linear oligomers and polymers, allows a fine-tuning of their affinity toward neutral [Ln(hfa)₃] (hfa = hexafluoroacetylacetonate) lanthanide containers in the [LkLn(hfa)₃] adducts. Two trends emerge with (i) an unusual pronounced thermodynamic selectivity for midrange lanthanides (Ln = Eu) and (ii) an intriguing influence of remote peripheral substitutions of the benzimidazole rings on the affinity of the tridentate unit for [Ln(hfa)₃]. These trends are amplified upon the connection of several tridentate binding units via their benzimidazole rings to give linear segmental dimers (L6) and trimers (L7), which are considered as models for programming linear Wolf-Type II metallopollymers. Modulation of the affinity between the terminal and central binding units in the linear multitridentate ligands deciphers the global decrease of metal-ligand binding strengths with an increase in the length of the receptors (monomer → dimer → trimer → polymer). Application of the site binding model shed light onto the origin of the variation of the thermodynamic affinities: a prerequisite for the programmed loading of a polymer backbone with luminescent lanthanide β-diketonates. Analysis of the crystal structures for these adducts reveals delicate correlations between the chemical bond lengths measured in the solid state (or bond valence parameters) and the metal-ligand affinities operating in solution.

Ligand-Sensitized Near-Infrared to Visible Linear Light Upconversion in a Discrete Molecular Erbium Complex

While the low-absorption cross section of lanthanide-based upconversion systems, in which the trivalent lanthanides (Ln³⁺) are responsible for converting low- to high-energy photons, has restricted their application to intense incident light, the emergence of a cascade sensitization through an organic dye antenna capable of broadly harvesting near-infrared (NIR) light in upconversion nanoparticles opened new horizons in the field. With the aim of pushing molecular upconversion within the range of practical applications, we show herein how the incorporation of an NIR organic dye antenna into the ligand scaffold of a mononuclear erbium coordination complex boosts the upconversion brightness of the molecule to such an extent that a low-power (0.7 W·cm^-2) NIR laser excitation of [L6Er(hfa)₃]⁺ (hfa = hexafluoroacetylacetonate) at 801 nm results in a measurable visible upconverted signal in a dilute solution (5 × 10^-4 M) at room temperature. Connecting the NIR dye antenna to the Er³⁺ activator in a single discrete molecule cures the inherent low-efficient metal-based excited-state absorption mechanism with a powerful indirect sensitization via an energy transfer upconversion, which drastically improves the molecular-based upconverted Er³⁺-centered visible emission.

From Mono- to Polynuclear Coordination Complexes with a 2,2'-Bipyrimidine-4,4'-dicarboxylate Ligand

The coordination properties of the ligand 2,2'-bipyrimidine-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid (H₂bpd) with lanthanide(III) ions (Ln = Eu, Tb, or Lu) were investigated. The syntheses of the H₂bpd ligand and its salts, [K₂(bpd)(H₂O)₂] (1) and [(AlkNH)Lu(bpd)₂] (Alk = Et, Hex, or en), are described. In the presence of LnCl₃ salts (Ln = Lu, Eu, or Tb), the formation of [Ln(bpd)₂]^- and [Ln(bpd)(H₂O)_x]⁺ species was assessed by ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), spectrophotometry, and spectrofluorometric titrations in aqueous solution. The solid state structure of 1, [K(H₂O)₂][Lu(bpd)₂] (2), and [(Et₃NH)Lu(bpd)₂] (3) could be determined by X-ray diffraction, showing the ligand to act as a tetradentate unit with formation of three five-membered chelate rings around the central Ln(III). With the aim of building polynuclear assemblies, the coordination between [Lu(bdp)₂]^- and [Lu(tta)₃(H₂O)] units (tta = thenoyltrifluoroacetylacetonate) was also investigated. In methanol, ¹H NMR titration experiments revealed the formation of complex mixtures from which two new species could be identified, [Lu₂(bpd)(tta)₄] (4) and H[Lu(bpd)(tta)₂] (5), as confirmed by their solid state structure analysis. Using highly lipophilic cations in chloroform, the octametallic complex [enH]₄[Lu₈(bpd)₄(tta)₁₈] (6) could be isolated and its X-ray structure determined.

Helix-mediated over 1 nm-range chirality recognition by ligand-to-ligand interactions of dinuclear helicates

Long-range chirality recognition between the two chiral guest ligands can be tuned based on the helix distances (d_Ln–Ln = 11.5 and 14.0 Å) of bis-diketonate bridged dinuclear lanthanide complexes (2Th and 3Th, respectively) used as mediators. Both 2Th and 3Th form one-dimensional (1D) helical structures upon terminal binding of two chiral guest co-ligands (L^R or L^S). Long-range chiral self-recognition is achieved in self-assembly of 2Th with L^R and L^S to preferentially form homochiral assemblies, 2Th-L^R·L^R and 2Th-L^S·L^S, whereas there is no direct molecular interaction between the two guest ligands at the terminal edges. X-ray crystal structure analysis and density functional theory studies reveal that long-range chiral recognition is achieved by terminal ligand-to-ligand interactions between the bis-diketonate ligands and chiral guest co-ligands. Conversely, in self-assembly of 3Th with a longer helix length, statistical binding of L^R and L^S occurs, forming heterochiral (3Th-L^R·L^S) and homochiral (3Th-L^R·L^R and 3Th-L^S·L^S) assemblies in an almost 1 : 1 ratio. When phenyl side arms of the chiral guest co-ligands are replaced by isopropyl groups (L′^R and L′^S), chiral self-recognition is also achieved in the self-assembly process of 3Th with the longer helix length to generate homochiral (3Th-L′^R·L′^R and 3Th-L′^S·L′^S) assemblies as the favored products. Thus, subtle modification of the chiral guests is capable of achieving over 1.4 nm-range chirality recognition.

Encapsulation-induced emission enhancement (EIEE) of Eu(iii)-complexes by aromatic micelles in water

Eu(iii)-complexes emit highly pure and intense red luminescence in aprotic organic solvents, yet the emission is usually quenched completely in the presence of aqueous solvents. Here we report that typical Eu(iii)-complexes are readily encapsulated in the hydrophobic cavities of aromatic micelles, composed of amphiphilic molecules with bent aromatic frameworks. Whereas the emissivity of the Eu(iii)-complexes themselves is zero in aqueous solutions, the resultant host-guest nanocomposites exhibit relatively strong red emission (up to Φ = 48%) with long emission lifetimes (up to τ = 1.05 ms) even in water. Thus, encapsulation-induced emission enhancement (EIEE) of the otherwise water-deactivated luminescent compounds is demonstrated by the aromatic micelle.

Cooperative loading of multisite receptors with lanthanide containers: an approach for organized luminescent metallopolymers

Metal loading of multi-terdentate receptors with [Eu(pbta)₃] provides the first anti-cooperative factors large enough for programming metal alternation in lanthanidopolymers at room temperature.

Metal-containing (bio)organic polymers are materials of continuously increasing importance for applications in energy storage and conversion, drug delivery, shape-memory items, supported catalysts, organic conductors and smart photonic devices. The embodiment of luminescent components provides a revolution in lighting and signaling with the ever-increasing development of polymeric light-emitting devices. Despite the unique properties expected from the introduction of optically and magnetically active lanthanides into organic polymers, the deficient control of the metal loading currently limits their design to empirical and poorly reproducible materials. We show here that the synthetic efforts required for producing soluble multi-site host systems Lk are largely overcome by the virtue of reversible thermodynamics for mastering the metal loading with the help of only two parameters: (1) the affinity of the luminescent lanthanide container for a single binding site and (2) the cooperative effect which modulates the successive fixation of metallic units to adjacent sites. When unsymmetrical perfluorobenzene-trifluoroacetylacetonate co-ligands (pbta^–) are selected for balancing the charge of the trivalent lanthanide cations, Ln³⁺, in six-coordinate [Ln(pbta)₃] containers, the explored anti-cooperative complexation processes induce nearest-neighbor intermetallic interactions twice as large as thermal energy at room temperature (RT = 2.5 kJ mol^–1). These values have no precedent when using standard symmetrical containers and they pave the way for programming metal alternation in luminescent lanthanidopolymers.

Synthesis and electronic investigation of mono- and di-substituted 4-nitro- and 4-amino-pyrazol-1-yl bis(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine-type ligands and luminescent Eu(iii) derivatives

OFF-ON-OFF Dual Emission at Visible and UV Wavelengths from Carbazole Functionalized β-Diketonate Europium(III) Complex

This work demonstrates dual emission "OFF-ON-OFF" switching at visible and UV wavelengths of a carbazole functionalized β-diketone (LH) by a simple change of a europium(III) ion (Eu(3+)) concentration in the submicromolar concentration range. In the presence of 0.25 equiv of Eu(3+) (5 μM), LH forms a luminescent 4:1 complex ([Eu(3+)(L(-))4](-)) exhibiting dual emission at 357 and 613 nm resulting from the local excitation of the carbazole ring and ligand-sensitized luminescence from the Eu(3+)-β-diketonate unit, respectively. The 4:1 complex begins to convert into a 2:1 complex ([Eu(3+)(L(-))2](+)) via a 3:1 complex [Eu(3+)(L(-))3] above a molar ratio ([Eu(3+)]/[LH]) of 0.25, which provides the opportunity for binding of solvent methanol molecules to the vacant site of the Eu(3+) ion in the complex ([Eu(3+)(L(-))2(MeOH)n](+)). The OH oscillators of coordinated methanol molecules facilitate the nonradiative pathway of the Eu(3+) emission; hence the emission at 613 nm almost disappears above the 0.50 equivalent of Eu(3+) (11 μM), while the UV emission at 357 nm remains mostly constant over the whole concentration range.

Looking for the Origin of Allosteric Cooperativity in Metallopolymers

The basic concept of allosteric cooperativity used in biology, chemistry and physics states that any change in the intermolecular host-guest interactions operating in multisite receptors can be assigned to intersite interactions. Using lanthanide metals as guests and linear multi-tridentate linear oligomers of variable lengths and geometries as hosts, this work shows that the quantitative modeling of metal loadings requires the consideration of a novel phenomenon originating from solvation processes. It stepwise modulates the intrinsic affinity of each isolated site in multisite receptors, and this without resorting to allosteric cooperativity. An easy-to-handle additive model predicts a negative power law dependence of the intrinsic affinity on the length of the linear metallopolymer. Applied to lanthanidopolymers, the latter common analysis overestimates cooperativity factors by more than two orders of magnitude.

Metal loading of lanthanidopolymers driven by positive cooperativity

The contraction of the lanthanidopolymers [L3^N(Ln(hfac)₃)_m] (Ln is La, Eu or Y) observed upon metal loading with small lanthanides favours solvation in solution, a trend which induces positive cooperativity in the thermodynamic complexation process.

Lanthanide loading of luminescent multi-tridentate polymers under thermodynamic control

This work illustrates the use of basic statistical mechanics for rationalizing the loading of linear multitridentate polymers with trivalent lanthanides, Ln(III), and identifies the specific ionic sizes of europium and yttrium as promising candidates for the further design of organized heterometallic f–f′ materials. Using [Ln(hfac)3] (hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate) as lanthanide carriers, the thermodynamically controlled formation of Wolf type-II lanthanidopolymers [{Ln(hfac)3}m(L4)] is modeled with the help of two simple microscopic descriptors: (i) the intrinsic affinity of Ln(III) for the tridentate binding sites fN3(Ln) and (ii) the intermetallic interactions ΔE1–2(Ln,Ln) operating between two occupied adjacent sites. Selective complexation (fN3La << fN3Eu > fN3(Y)) modulated by anticooperative interactions (ΔE1–2(La,La) ≃ ΔE1–2(Eu,Eu) > ΔE1–2(Y,Y) ≈ 0) favors the fixation of Eu(III) in semiorganized lanthanidopolymers [{Eu(hfac)3}m(L4)] displaying exploitable light-downshifting.

Lanthanide complexes based on β-diketonates and a tetradentate chromophore highly luminescent as powders and in polymers

A new type of octacoordinated ternary β-diketonates complexes of terbium and europium has been prepared using the anionic tetradentate terpyridine-carboxylate ligand (L) as a sensitizer of lanthanide luminescence in combination with two β-diketonates ligands 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetyl-acetonate (tta(-)) for Eu(3+) and trifluoroacetylacetonate (tfac(-)) for Tb(3+). The solid state structures of the two complexes [Tb(L)(tfac)2] (1) and [Eu(L)(tta)2] (2) have been determined by X-ray crystallography. Photophysical and (1)H NMR indicate a high stability of these complexes with respect to ligand dissociation in solution. The use of the anionic tetradentate ligand in combination with two β-diketonates ligands leads to the extension of the absorption window toward the visible region (390 nm) and to high luminescence quantum yield for the europium complex in the solid state (Φ = 66(6)%). Furthermore, these complexes have been incorporated in polymer matrixes leading to highly luminescent flexible layers.
