Abstract
Dissymmetrical α,α'-disubstituted tripyrrins have been prepared using a modified synthetic protocol. Tripyrrin 2a bearing 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl and 4-methoxyphenyl moieties showed an anti-type dimer arrangement in the solid state. In contrast, syn-type dimers were observed for tripyrrin 2b bearing 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl and 3,5-di-t-butylphenyl moieties. In addition, proton-exchange NH tautomerization was observed in 2b.

Abstract
Hydrogen-bonded supramolecular systems are usually characterized in solution through analysis of NMR data such as complexation-induced shifts and nuclear Overhauser effects (nOe). Routine direct detection of hydrogen bonding particularly in multicomponent mixtures, even with the aid of 2D NMR experiments for full assignment, is more challenging. We describe an elementary rapid 1H-15N HMQC NMR experiment which addresses these challenges without the need for complex pulse sequences. Under readily accessible conditions (243/263 K, 50 mM solutions) and natural 15N abundance, unambiguous assignment of 15N resonances facilitates direct detection of intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonds in mechanically interlocked structures and quadruply hydrogen-bonded dimers─of dialkylaminoureidopyrimidinones, ureidopyrimidinones, and diamidonaphthyridines─in single or multicomponent mixtures to establish tautomeric configuration, conformation, and, to resolve self-sorted speciation.

Abstract
Control of the association behavior by the molecular design is one of the most essential benefits in artificial supramolecular systems. 1,14-Dianilinotripyrrin has recently emerged as a novel conjugated molecule which forms a double helix in non-polar solvents with the aid of multiple interstrand hydrogen bonding interactions. In this work, we investigated the substituent effects at the 5,10-positions of tripyrrin on their association thermodynamics. This study illuminated two key findings; 1) electronic tuning by the para-substituents reduce the entropic costs thereby slightly improve the association constants, and 2) ortho-substituents force the tripyrrin core to be relatively planar, which significantly decrease the association constant due to less feasible π-stacking.

Abstract
The dimeric association of α,α'-di(benzylamino)tripyrrin in chloroform was found to be 40 times less effective than that of previously reported α,α'-dianilinotripyrrin, which, however, led us to observe the co-crystal structure of single and double helix forms. Attachment of chiral phenylethylamines on the same tripyrrin platform was also performed to induce helical chirality.

Abstract
A new motif for artificial double helices was developed on the basis of α,α'-disubstituted tripyrrin. α,α'-Dibromotripyrrin 3 was prepared by gentle bromination at the pyrrolic α-positions of 5,10-diphenyltripyrrane followed by oxidation with DDQ. Nucleophilic substitution reactions of 3 with anilines proceeded efficiently to furnish a series of α,α'-dianilinotripyrrins 4-11, which displayed monomeric and dimeric forms depending upon the solvent used for crystallization and the structures of the substituted anilines. Dimeric forms show double helical structures with smooth π-conjugation as indicated by their absorption spectra. van't-Hoff plot analyses revealed that the dimerizations in CDCl3 are enthalpy-driven. Larger association constants of the dimerization are attained for 3,5-di-t-butylanilino- and 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)anilino-substituted tripyrrins (7 and 8) via additional multiple intermolecular interactions. In a nonpolar and aprotic solvent, tripyrrins (9 and 10) bearing bulkier 1-naphthylamino and mesitylamino groups do not dimerize but undergo unique tautomerization.

Abstract
Herein we present a new, readily functionalized AAA-DDD hydrogen bond array. A novel AAA monomeric unit (3a-b) was obtained from a two-step synthetic procedure starting with 2-aminonicotinaldehyde via microwave radiation (overall yield of 52-66%). 1H NMR and fluorescence spectroscopy confirmed the complexation event with a calculated association constant of 1.57 × 107 M-1. Likewise, the usefulness of this triple hydrogen bond motif in supramolecular polymerization was demonstrated through viscosity measurements in a crosslinked supramolecular alternating copolymer.

Abstract
Non-coplanar triple-hydrogen-bond arrays are connected as telechelic groups to alkyl chains and their properties as AA/BB type supramolecular polymers are examined. Viscosity studies at three temperatures are used to study the ring-chain equilibrium and determine the critical concentrations where polymer chains are formed. It is observed that neither the temperature range studied nor the alkyl chain length of one component significantly affect the polymerization properties in this system.

Abstract
A facile and flexible method for the synthesis of a new AAA-DDD triple hydrogen-bonding motif is described. Polytopic supramolecular building blocks with precisely oriented AAA and DDD groups are thus accessible in few steps. These building blocks were used for the assembly of large macrocycles featuring four AAA-DDD interactions and a macrobicyclic complex with a total of six AAA-DDD interactions.

Abstract
For a complementary hydrogen-bonded complex, when every hydrogen-bond acceptor is on one side and every hydrogen-bond donor is on the other, all secondary interactions are attractive and the complex is highly stable. AAA-DDD (A=acceptor, D=donor) is considered to be the most stable among triply hydrogen-bonded sequences. The easily synthesized and further derivatized AAA-DDD system is very desirable for hydrogen-bonded functional materials. In this case, AAA and DDD, starting from 4-methoxybenzaldehyde, were synthesized with the Hantzsch pyridine synthesis and Friedländer annulation reaction. The association constant determined by fluorescence titration in chloroform at room temperature is 2.09×10(7) M(-1) . The AAA and DDD components are not coplanar, but form a V shape in the solid state. Supramolecular polymers based on AAA-DDD triply hydrogen bonded have also been developed. This work may make AAA-DDD triply hydrogen-bonded sequences easily accessible for stimuli-responsive materials.

Abstract
Chiral polyphenyl-bridged bis(2,2′-bipyridine) ligands L2–4 give intense CD signals when protonated with tetrachloroferric acid or perchloric acid. X-ray crystal structure of [(L2)2H2](FeCl4)2 shows that a double-stranded helix stabilized by both interior and exterior hydrogen bonding is formed. Theoretical DFT calculations show that such stabilization exists in solution.

Abstract
A new class of imide- and urea-based hetero-strands with a quadruple ADDA/DAAD hydrogen-bond array was designed and synthesized from easily accessible starting materials. The molecular recognition between the two different strands depends highly on the substituents and the linker between neighboring hydrogen-bonds, which results in the stability of these heteroduplexes varying from 10(3) to >10(5) M(-1) in apolar solvents. In particular, an increase of the association constant by up to one order of magnitude was observed by derivatizing the ADDA arrays at the termini with electron-withdrawing groups. Molecular modelling of the representative complementary complexes reveals the binding mode of four hydrogen-bond arrays that agrees with the matched pair.

Abstract
Three model hydrogen bond arrays that form complexes with large twist angles between their heterocyclic rings were synthesized differing only in the sequence of their hydrogen bond donors and acceptors. The complementary and self-complementary association of the arrays to form complexes was studied computationally and in solution. The analysis reveals the significant impact secondary interactions have on complex stability in such an arrangement despite the very different topology in comparison to typical planar arrays.

Abstract
The design and syntheses of four self-complementary oligomers that contain an underlying AADD hydrogen bond sequence are presented, and their self-association was examined in the solution and solid state. The molecular recognition between the two strands is highly sensitive to substitutions of their component heterocycles. Substitution with electron-donating and -withdrawing groups and the influence of preorganization has a large effect on the overall stabilities of the complexes studied. In particular, a wide range (>10(5) M(-1)) of stabilities with respect to substitutions at various positions in the AADD oligomers was demonstrated. In the most extreme case, the dimerization constant measured (K(dimer) ≥4.5×10(7) M(-1)) is comparable to the most stable homodimers of neutral AADD arrays reported to date.
