The more gold--the more enantioselective: cyclohydroaminations of γ-allenyl sulfonamides with mono-, bis-, and trisphospholane gold(I) catalysts

Synthesis of C3-Symmetric Cinchona-Based Organocatalysts and Their Applications in Asymmetric Michael and Friedel–Crafts Reactions

In this work, anchoring of cinchona derivatives to trifunctional cores (hub approach) was demonstrated to obtain size-enlarged organocatalysts. By modifying the cinchona skeleton in different positions, we prepared four C3-symmetric size-enlarged cinchona derivatives (hub-cinchonas), which were tested as organocatalysts and their catalytic activities were compared with the parent cinchona (hydroquinine) catalyst. We showed that in the hydroxyalkylation reaction of indole, hydroquinine provides good enantioselectivities (up to 73% ee), while the four new size-enlarged derivatives resulted in significantly lower values (up to 29% ee) in this reaction. Anchoring cinchonas to trifunctional cores was found to facilitate nanofiltration-supported catalyst recovery using the PolarClean alternative solvent. The C3-symmetric size-enlarged organocatalysts were completely rejected by all the applied membranes, whereas the separation of hydroquinine was found to be insufficient when using organic solvent nanofiltration. Furthermore, the asymmetric catalysis was successfully demonstrated in the case of the Michael reaction of 1,3-diketones and trans-β-nitrostyrene using Hub3-cinchona (up to 96% ee) as a result of the positive effect of the C3-symmetric structure using a bulkier substrate. This equates to an increased selectivity of the catalyst in comparison to hydroquinine in the latter Michael reaction.

Dinuclear gold catalysis

This review summarizes the recent achievements of dinuclear gold-catalyzed redox coupling, asymmetric catalysis and photocatalysis. The dinuclear gold catalysts show a better catalytic performance than the mononuclear gold catalysts in certain cases.

Aspects of Phosphaallene Chemistry: Heat-Induced Formation of 1,2-Dihydrophosphetes by Intramolecular Nucleophilic Aromatic Substitution and Photochemical Generation of Tricyclic Phosphiranes

3H-Phosphaallenes are accessible on a new and facile route and show a fascinating chemical behavior. The thermally induced rearrangement of Mes*P═C═C(H)R' (R' = tBu, Ad) afforded by C-H activation, isobutene elimination, and C-C and P-H bond formation bicyclic 1-benzo-dihydrophosphetes (2) with PC₃ heterocycles. DFT calculations suggest a mechanism with intramolecular nucleophilic aromatic substitution and replacement of an alkyl group by the nucleophilic α-C atom of the phosphaallene. These bicycles formed W(CO)₅ complexes (3) or afforded 1,2-dihydrophosphetes with P-bound alkenyl groups by catalyst-free hydrophosphination of alkynes (4 and 5). The resulting bulky phosphines formed complexes with IrCp*Cl₂, RuCl₂, AuCl, or CuO₃SCF₃. The Ru atom is coordinated by the P atom and a phenyl group. Irradiation of TripP═C═C(H)tBu led by the insertion of the central C atom of the P═C═C group into the α-C-H bond of an iPr substituent and by C-C and P-C bond formation to a new isomer of phosphaallenes, 10, which features a strained PC₂ heterocycle. It formed adducts with M(CO)₅ (M = Cr, Mo, W) and AuCl and reacted with SO₂Cl₂ by cleavage of one of the phosphirane P-C bonds to yield PC₄ or PC₅ heterocycles. Hydrolysis yielded a PC₅ compound with a P(O)Cl group.

Triple the fun: tris(ferrocenyl)arene-based gold(i) complexes for redox-switchable catalysis

The modular syntheses of C₃-symmetric tris(ferrocenyl)arene-based tris-phosphanes and their homotrinuclear gold(i) complexes are reported. Choosing the arene core allows fine-tuning of the exact oxidation potentials and thus tailoring of the electrochemical response. The tris[chloridogold(i)] complexes were investigated in the catalytic ring-closing isomerisation of N-(2-propyn-1-yl)benzamide, showing cooperative behaviour vs. a mononuclear chloridogold(i) complex. Adding one, two, or three equivalents of 1,1′-diacetylferrocenium[tetrakis(perfluoro-tert-butoxy)aluminate] as an oxidant during the catalytic reaction (in situ) resulted in a distinct, stepwise influence on the resulting catalytic rates. Isolation of the oxidised species is possible, and using them as (pre-)catalysts (ex situ oxidation) confirmed the activity trend. Proving the intactness of the P–Au–Cl motif during oxidation, the tri-oxidised benzene-based complex has been structurally characterised.

Trinuclear gold(i) complexes of C₃-symmetric tris(ferrocenyl)arene-based tris-phosphanes with four accessible oxidation states catalyse the ring-closing isomerisation of N-(2-propyn-1-yl)benzamide with different rates depending on their redox state.

Yldiide Ligands as Building Blocks for Polynuclear Coinage Metal Complexes: Metal Squares, Triangles and Chains

Yldiides have unique electronic properties and donor abilities, but as ligands in transition metal complexes they are scarcely represented in the literature. Here, the controlled synthesis of a series of polynuclear gold yldiide complexes derived from triphenyl(cyanomethyl)phosphonium bromide, [Ph₃ PCH₂ CN]Br, under mild conditions is described. Anionic dinuclear NBu₄ [(AuX)₂ {C(CN)PPh₃ }] (X=Cl, C₆ F₅ ) or trinuclear derivatives NBu₄ [Au₃ X₂ {C(CN)PPh₃ }] bearing terminal chloride or pentafluorophenyl groups and bridging yldiide ligands have been prepared. These compounds evolve in solution giving rise to the formation of an unprecedented tetrameric gold cluster, [Au₄ {C(CN)PPh₃ }₄ ], by the loss of the gold complex NBu₄ [AuX₂ ]. This gold cluster can also be prepared in high yield by a transmetalation reaction from the analogous tetrameric silver cluster, and two geometric isomers have been characterised, their formation dependent on the synthetic route. The triphenylphosphonium cyanomethyldiide ligand has also been used to build different dinuclear and trinuclear cationic complexes bearing phosphine or diphosphine ancillary ligands and bridging yldiide moieties. Further coordination through the cyano group of the yldiide ligand gives heterometallic trinuclear or pentanuclear derivatives. Structural characterisation of many of these compounds reveals the presence of complex molecular systems stabilised by gold⋅⋅⋅gold interactions and bridging yldiide ligands.

Recent advances in enantioselective gold catalysis

Interest in homogeneous gold catalysis has undergone a marked increase. As strong yet air- and moisture-tolerant π-acids, cationic gold(i) complexes have been shown to catalyze diverse transformations of alkenes, alkynes and allenes, opening new opportunities for chemical synthesis. The development of efficient asymmetric variants is required in order to take full advantage of the preparative potential of these transformations. During the last few years, the chemical community has achieved tremendous success in the area. This review highlights the updated progress (2011-2015) in enantioselective gold catalysis. The discussion is classified according to the π-bonds activated by gold(i), in an order of alkynes, allenes and alkenes. Other gold activation modes, such as σ-Lewis acid catalyzed reactions and transformations of diazo compounds are also discussed.

Anatomy of gold catalysts: facts and myths

This review article covers the main types of gold(i) complexes used as precatalysts under homogeneous conditions in organic synthesis and discusses the different ways of catalyst activation as well as ligand, silver, and anion effects.

The Synthesis, Characterization and Reactivity of a Series of Ruthenium N-triphos Ph Complexes

Herein we report the synthesis of a tridentate phosphine ligand N(CH2PPh2)3 (N-triphos(Ph)) (1) via a phosphorus based Mannich reaction of the hydroxylmethylene phosphine precursor with ammonia in methanol under a nitrogen atmosphere. The N-triphos(Ph) ligand precipitates from the solution after approximately 1 hr of reflux and can be isolated analytically pure via simple cannula filtration procedure under nitrogen. Reaction of the N-triphos(Ph) ligand with [Ru3(CO)12] under reflux affords a deep red solution that show evolution of CO gas on ligand complexation. Orange crystals of the complex [Ru(CO)2{N(CH2PPh2)3}-κ(3)P] (2) were isolated on cooling to RT. The (31)P{(1)H} NMR spectrum showed a characteristic single peak at lower frequency compared to the free ligand. Reaction of a toluene solution of complex 2 with oxygen resulted in the instantaneous precipitation of the carbonate complex [Ru(CO3)(CO){N(CH2PPh2)3}-κ(3)P] (3) as an air stable orange solid. Subsequent hydrogenation of 3 under 15 bar of hydrogen in a high-pressure reactor gave the dihydride complex [RuH2(CO){N(CH2PPh2)3}-κ(3)P] (4), which was fully characterized by X-ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy. Complexes 3 and 4 are potentially useful catalyst precursors for a range of hydrogenation reactions, including biomass-derived products such as levulinic acid (LA). Complex 4 was found to cleanly react with LA in the presence of the proton source additive NH4PF6 to give [Ru(CO){N(CH2PPh2)3}-κ(3)P{CH3CO(CH2)2CO2H}-κ(2)O](PF6) (6).

Selective formation of gold(I) bis-phospholane macrocycles, polymeric chains, and nanotubes

A series of highly flexible bis-phospholane ligands 3a-g with 5-11 methylene groups in the backbone was synthesized and fully characterized by mass spectrometry and NMR ((1)H, (13)C, (31)P) and IR spectroscopy. Gold bis-phospholane macrocycles containing 16 ([Au2Cl2(μ-3a)2], 4), 20 ([Au2Cl2(μ-3c)2], 5), 24 ([Au2Cl(μ-3e)2]Cl, 6), and 28 ([Au2Cl2(μ-3g)2], 7) atoms in the ring were obtained in one step from [AuCl(tht)] (tht = tetrahydrothiophene) and 3a,c,e,g in excellent yield. In addition, three polymers resulting from aurophilic interactions, i.e., zigzag chains in [Au2Cl2(μ-3b)]x (8) and nanotubes in [Au2Cl2(μ-3d)]x (9) and [Au2Cl2(μ-3f)]x (10), with Au···Au distances of 309.41(2), 330.24(6), and 335.82(3) pm, respectively, were obtained. Halide abstraction of 4-7 with AgBF4 led to macrocycles [Au2(μ-3a)2](BF4)2 (11), [Au2(μ-3c)2](BF4)2 (12), [Au2(μ-3e)2](BF4)2 (13), and [Au2(μ-3g)2](BF4)2 (14). In 12, the monomers are connected by strong aurophilic interactions (Au···Au 296.57(1) pm) in the solid state with formation of a polymeric chain. All complexes were fully characterized by NMR ((1)H, (13)C, (31)P) and IR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and X-ray diffraction.

Synthesis of axially chiral gold complexes and their applications in asymmetric catalyses

Several novel chiral N-heterocyclic carbene and phosphine ligands were prepared from (S)-BINOL. Moreover, their ligated Au complexes were also successfully synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystal diffraction. A weak gold-π interaction between the Au atom and the aromatic ring in these gold complexes was identified. Furthermore, we confirmed the formation of a pair of diastereomeric isomers in NHC gold complexes bearing an axially chiral binaphthyl moiety derived from the hindered rotation around C–C and C–N bonds. In the asymmetric intramolecular hydroamination reaction most of these chiral Au(I) complexes showed good catalytic activities towards olefins tethered with a NHTs functional group to give the corresponding product in moderate yields and up to 29% ee.

Chiral gold(i) phosphite complexes are readily prepared modularly from 3,3'-bis(triphenylsilyl)-1,1'-bi-2-naphthol. These chiral gold(i) phosphite complexes are very reactive precatalysts for the [4+2] cycloaddition of aryl-substituted 1,6-enynes with enantiomeric ratios ranging from 86 : 14 up to 94 : 6.

Chiral ditopic cyclophosphazane (CycloP) ligands: synthesis, coordination chemistry, and application in asymmetric catalysis

A series of dichlorocyclophosphazanes [{ClP(μ-NR)}2 ] containing chiral and achiral R groups was obtained from simple commercially available amines and PCl3 . Their condensation reactions with axially chiral biaryl diols yielded ansa-bridged chiral cyclophosphazane (CycloP) ligands. This highly modular methodology allows extensive elaboration of the ligand set, in which the chirality can be introduced at the diol bridge and/or the amido R group. This provides the possibility to observe match and mismatch effects in catalysis. A series of twenty CycloP ligands was synthesized and characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, HRMS, elemental analysis, and in selected cases, single-crystal X-ray diffraction. These studies show that all of the ditopic CycloP ligands are C2 symmetric, rendering their metal coordination sites symmetry equivalent. Two well-established enantioselective reactions were explored by using late-transition metal CycloP complexes as catalysts; the gold-catalyzed hydroamination of γ-allenyl sulfonamides and the asymmetric nickel-catalyzed three-component coupling of a diene and an aldehyde. The steric demands of the CycloP ligands have a subtle influence on the reactivity and selectivity observed in both reactions. Good enantiomeric ratios (e.r.) as high as 89:11 in the gold-catalyzed reaction and 92:8 in the nickel-catalyzed bis-homoallylation reaction were observed.

Mechanistic insights into enantioselective gold-catalyzed allylation of indoles with alcohols: the counterion effect

Enantioselective gold-catalysis is emerging as a powerful tool in organic synthesis for the stereoselective manipulation of unfunctionalized unsaturated hydrocarbons. Despite the exponential growth, the molecular complexity of common chiral gold complexes generally prevents a complete description of the mechanism steps and activation modes being documented. In this study, we present the results of a combined experimental-computational (DFT) investigation of the mechanism of the enantioselective gold-catalyzed allylic alkylation of indoles with alcohols. A stepwise S(N)2'-process (i.e. anti-auroindolination of the olefin, proton-transfer, and subsequent anti-elimination [Au]-OH) is disclosed, leading to a library of tricyclic-fused indole derivatives. The pivotal role played by the gold counterion, in terms of molecular arrangement (i.e. "folding effect") and proton-shuttling in restoring the catalytic species, is finally documented.
