Abstract
Porous solids with channel sizes that are not much above the size of small hydrocarbons can yield extremely large adsorption selectivity. Our Grand Canonical Monte-Carlo simulations indicate exceptionally high selectivity for the separation of methane, ethane and propane from natural gas. At 250 K the C3H8/CH4 separation on MIL-127 at low pressure has a selectivity of more than 1000 and the C3H8/CH4 separation on CNT (9,9) is even above 2000. This is due to the strong molecule lattice interaction in narrow channels which leads to large enthalpies of adsorption. The Arrhenius law for the Henry coefficients is analysed in order to show that the effect is due to this enthalpy rather than to steric reasons.

Abstract
Single crystals of 2D coordination network {Cu2 L2 ⋅ (DMF)3 (H2 O)3 }n (1-DMF) were prepared by reaction of commercial reagents 3-formyl-4-hydroxybenzoic acid (H2 L) and Cu(NO3 )2 in dimethylformamide (DMF). The single-crystal structure shows two distinct Cu(II) coordination environments arising from the separate coordination of Cu(II) cations to the carboxylate and salicylaldehydato moieties on the linker, with 1D channels running through the structure. Flexibility is exhibited on solvent exchange with ethanol and tetrahydrofuran, while porosity and the unique overall connectivity of the structure are retained. The activated material exhibits type I gas sorption behaviour and a BET surface area of 950 m2 g-1 (N2 , 77 K). Notably, the framework adsorbs negligible quantities of CH4 compared with CO2 and the C2 Hn hydrocarbons. It exhibits exceptional selectivity for C2 H2 /CH4 and C2 H2 /C2 Hn , which has applicability in separation technologies for the isolation of C2 H2 .

Abstract
![]()
The surface assessment via grid evaluation
(SuAVE)
software was developed to account for the effect of curvature in the
calculations of structural properties of chemical interfaces regardless
of the chemical composition, asymmetry, and level of atom coarseness.
It employs differential geometry techniques, enabling the representation
of chemical surfaces as fully differentiable. In this article, we
present novel developments of SuAVE to treat closed surfaces and complex
cavity shapes. These developments expand the repertoire of curvature-dependent
analyses already available in the previous version of SuAVE (e.g., area per lipid, density profiles, membrane thickness,
deuterium-order parameters, volume per lipid, and surface curvature
angle) to include new functionalities applicable to soft matter (e.g., sphericity, average radius, principal moment of inertia,
and roundness) and crystalline porous materials (e.g., pore diameter, internal void volume, total area, and the total
void volume of the unit cell structure). SuAVE can accurately handle
chemical systems with high and low atom density as demonstrated for
two distinct chemical systems: the lipid A vesicle and a set of selected
metal–organic frameworks. The SuAVE software v2.0 is fully
parallel and benefits from a compiler that supports OpenMP. SuAVE
is freely available from https://github.com/SuAVE-Software/source and https://www.biomatsite.net/.

Abstract
Copper plays an important role in alkyne coordination chemistry and transformations. This report describes the isolation and full characterization of a thermally stable, copper(I) acetylene complex using a highly fluorinated bis(pyrazolyl)borate ligand support. Details of the related copper(I) complex of HC≡CSiMe3 are also reported. They are three-coordinate copper complexes featuring η2-bound alkynes. Raman data show significant red-shifts in C≡C stretch of [H2B(3,5-(CF3)2Pz)2]Cu(HC≡CH) and [H2B(3,5-(CF3)2Pz)2]Cu(HC≡CSiMe3) relative to those of the corresponding alkynes. Computational analysis using DFT indicates that the Cu(I) alkyne interaction in these molecules is primarily of the electrostatic character. The π-backbonding is the larger component of the orbital contribution to the interaction. The dinuclear complexes such as Cu2(μ-[3,5-(CF3)2Pz])2(HC≡CH)2 display similar Cu-alkyne bonding features. The mononuclear [H2B(3,5-(CF3)2Pz)2]Cu(NCMe) complex catalyzes [3 + 2] cycloadditions between tolyl azide and a variety of alkynes including acetylene. It is comparatively less effective than the related trinuclear copper catalyst {μ-[3,5-(CF3)2Pz]Cu}3 involving bridging pyrazolates.

Abstract
Natural gas (NG) and ethylene (C2H4) are two raw materials of significant value for manufacturing versatile fine chemicals and/or polymers, and thus the development of solid adsorbing agents such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) applied to their depuration is very crucial but remains highly challenging. In this research, we designed and synthesized a ligand containing mixed N and O coordination donors, which was solvothermally assembled with Cu(II) ions to generate a microporous MOF. X-ray crystallography revealed that the title MOF incorporates one-dimensional (1D) homochiral helical chains that are datively cross-linked to form open channels in the three-periodic coordination framework. Furthermore, the behaviors of C1-C2 hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide (CO2) adsorbed in the title MOF were systematically investigated, revealing its promising potential for the purification of both NG and C2H4. At 109 kPa and 298 K, the C2/methane (CH4), CO2/CH4, and acetylene (C2H2)/C2H4 adsorption selectivities are impressive, reaching as high as 62.9, 28.6, and 3.5, respectively. This work represents a unique MOF based on cross-linked homochiral helical chains exhibiting dual-function separation potentials for NG and C2H4 purifications.

Abstract
The development of porous materials for ethylene (C2H4) separation and purification, a very important separation process in the chemical industry, is urgently needed but quite challenging. In particular, the realization of selectivity-reversed adsorption (namely, C2H4 is not preferentially adsorbed) and the simultaneous capture of multinary coexisting impurities such as ethane (C2H6) and acetylene (C2H2) will significantly simplify process design and reduce energy and cost consumption, but such porous materials are quite difficult to design and have not yet been fully explored. In this work, by employing an aromatic-rich bithiophene-based tetraisophthalate ligand, we solvothermally fabricated an anionic In(III)-based framework termed ZJNU-115 featuring In(COO)4 as an inorganic secondary building unit as well as one-dimensional channels. Due to the absence of unsaturated metallic sites, together with aromatic-rich channel surface decorated with abundant hydrogen-bonding acceptors of carboxylate oxygen and thiophene sulfur atoms, desolvated ZJNU-115 exhibited an unusual adsorption relationship with respect to C2 hydrocarbons, namely, simultaneous and preferable capture of C2H6 and C2H2 over C2H4 at the temperatures investigated, thus representing a rare metal-organic framework (MOF) with the promising potential for one-step adsorption-phase purification of C2H4 from a trinary C2 hydrocarbon mixture. Compared to a few of the MOFs reported for such an application, ZJNU-115 displayed simultaneously good adsorption selectivities of both C2H2 and C2H6 over C2H4. Furthermore, its separation potential can be postsynthetically tailored by substituting dimethylammonium (Me2NH2+) counterions with tetraalkyl ammonium ions (NR4+; R = Me, Et, or n-Pr). More importantly, ZJNU-115 was stable in various organic solvents as well as aqueous solutions with pH values ranging from 5 to 9, thus laying a solid foundation for its practical applications. The design principle and the performance regulation strategy adopted in this work will offer valuable guidance for the contrapuntal construction of porous MOFs employed for direct multicomponent purification of C2H4 with improved performance.

Abstract
Metal trimers [M3 (O/OH)](OOCR)6 are among the most important structural building blocks. From these trimers, a great success has been achieved in the design of 6- or 9-connected framework materials with various topological features and outstanding gas-sorption properties. In comparison, 8-connected trimer-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are rare. Given multiple competitive pathways for the formation of 6- or 9-connected frameworks, it remains challenging to identify synthetic or structural parameters that can be used to direct the self-assembly process toward trimer-based 8-connected materials. Here, a viable strategy called angle bending modulation is revealed for creating a prototypical MOF type based on 8-connected M3 (OH)(OOCR)5 (Py-R)3 trimers (M = Zn, Co, Fe). As a proof of concept, six members in this family are synthesized using three types of ligands (CPM-80, -81, and -82). These materials do not possess open-metal sites and show excellent uptake capacity for various hydrocarbon gas molecules and inverse C2 H6 /C2 H4 selectivity. CPM-81-Co, made from 2,5-furandicarboxylate and isonicotinate, features selectivity of 1.80 with high uptake capacity for ethane (123 cm3 g-1 ) and ethylene (113 cm3 g-1 ) at 298 K and 1 bar.

Abstract
The design and construction of "thermodynamically stable" metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that can survive in liquid water, boiling water, and acidic/basic solutions over a wide pH range is highly desirable for many practical applications, especially adsorption-based gas separations with obvious scalable preparations. Herein, a new thermodynamically stable Ni MOF, {[Ni(L)(1,4-NDC)(H2 O)2 ]}n (IITKGP-20; L=4,4'-azobispyridine; 1,4-NDC=1,4-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid; IITKGP stands for the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur), has been designed that displays moderate porosity with a BET surface area of 218 m2 g-1 and micropores along the [10-1] direction. As an alternative to a cost-intensive, cryogenic, high-pressure distillation process for the separation of hydrocarbons, MOFs have recently shown promise for such separations. Thus, towards an application standpoint, this MOF exhibits a higher uptake of C2 hydrocarbons over that of C1 hydrocarbon under ambient conditions, with one of the highest selectivities based on the ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) method. A combination of two strategies (the presence of stronger metal-N coordination of the spacer and the hydrophobicity of the aromatic moiety of the organic ligand) possibly makes the framework highly robust, even stable in boiling water and over a wide range of pH 2-10, and represents the first example of a thermodynamically stable MOF displaying a 2D structural network. Moreover, this material is easily scalable by heating the reaction mixture at reflux overnight. Because such separations are performed in the presence of water vapor and acidic gases, there is a great need to explore thermodynamically stable MOFs that retain not only structural integrity, but also the porosity of the frameworks.

Abstract
Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are an emerging class of crystalline porous polymers with highly tuneable structures and functionalities. COFs have been proposed as ideal materials for applications in the energy-intensive field of molecular separation due to their notable intrinsic features such as low density, exceptional stability, high surface area, and readily adjustable pore size and chemical environment. This review attempts to highlight the key advancements made in the synthesis of COFs for diverse separation applications such as water treatment or the separation of gas mixtures and organic molecules, including chiral and isomeric compounds. Methods proposed for the fabrication of COF-based columns and continuous membranes for practical applications are also discussed in detail. Finally, a perspective regarding the remaining challenges and future directions for COF research in the field of separation has also been presented.

Abstract
Investigation of the impact of ligand-originated MOF (metal-organic framework) isomerism and ligand functionalization on gas adsorption is of vital importance because a study in this aspect provides valuable guidance for future fabrication of new MOFs exhibiting better performance. For the abovementioned purpose, two NbO-type ligand-originated MOF isomers based on methoxy-functionalized diisophthalate ligands were solvothermally constructed in this work. Their gas adsorption properties toward acetylene, carbon dioxide, and methane were systematically investigated, revealing their promising potential for the adsorptive separation of both acetylene/methane and carbon dioxide/methane gas mixtures, which are involved in the industrial processes of acetylene production and natural gas sweetening. In particular, compared to its isomer ZJNU-58, ZJNU-59 displays larger acetylene and carbon dioxide uptake capacities as well as higher acetylene/methane and carbon dioxide/methane adsorption selectivities despite its lower pore volume and surface area, demonstrating a very crucial role that the effect of pore size plays in acetylene and carbon dioxide adsorption. In addition, the impact of ligand modification with a methoxy group on gas adsorption was also evaluated. ZJNU-58 exhibits slightly lower acetylene and carbon dioxide uptake capacities but higher acetylene/methane and carbon dioxide/methane adsorption selectivities as compared to its parent compound NOTT-103. By contrast, enhanced adsorption selectivities and uptake capacities were observed for ZJNU-59 as compared to its parent compound ZJNU-73. The results demonstrated that the impact of ligand functionalization with a methoxy group on gas adsorption might vary from MOF to MOF, depending on the chosen parent compound. The results might shed some light on understanding the impact of both ligand-originated MOF isomerism and methoxy group functionalization on gas adsorption.

Abstract
The ligand truncation strategy provides facile access to a wide variety of linkers for the construction of MOFs bearing diverse structures and intriguing properties. In this work, we employed this strategy to design and prepare a novel bent diisophthalate ligand, and used it to successfully construct a copper-based MOF ZJNU-51 with the formula of [Cu2L(H2O)2]·5DMF (H4L = 5,5'-(triphenylamine-4,4'-diyl) diisophthalic acid), which was thoroughly characterized by various techniques including FTIR, TGA, PXRD and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. ZJNU-51 is a two-fold interpenetrated network in which the single network consists of dicopper paddlewheel units connected by the organic ligands and contains open channels as well as six distinct types of metal-organic cages. Furthermore, gas adsorption properties with respect to C2H2, CO2, and CH4 were systematically investigated, demonstrating that ZJNU-51 is a highly promising material for C2H2/CH4 and CO2/CH4 separations. Specifically, the IAST adsorption selectivity at 298 K and 1 atm reaches 35.6 and 5.4 for the equimolar C2H2/CH4 and CO2/CH4 gas mixtures, respectively. More significantly, as revealed by PXRD and N2 adsorption measurements, ZJNU-51 exhibits excellent chemical stability, which lays a good foundation for its practical application.

Abstract
Pore volume is one of the main properties for the characterization of microporous crystals. It is experimentally measurable, and it can also be obtained from the refined unit cell by a number of computational techniques. In this work, we assess the accuracy and the discrepancies between the different computational methods which are commonly used for this purpose, i.e, geometric, helium, and probe center pore volumes, by studying a database of more than 5000 frameworks. We developed a new technique to fully characterize the internal void of a microporous material and to compute the probe-accessible and -occupiable pore volume. We show that, unlike the other definitions of pore volume, the occupiable pore volume can be directly related to the experimentally measured pore volumes from nitrogen isotherms.

Abstract
In this work, nanoporous boron nitride sample was synthesized with a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 1360 m2/g and particle size 5-7 μm. The boron nitride was characterized with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and electron microscopy (TEM and SEM). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) under nitrogen and air and subsequent analysis with XPS and XRD suggested that its structure is stable in air up to 800 °C and in nitrogen up to 1050 °C, which is higher than most of the common adsorbents reported so far. Nitrogen and hydrocarbon adsorption at 298 K and pressure up to 1 bar suggested that all hydrocarbon adsorption amounts were higher than that of nitrogen and the adsorbed amount of hydrocarbon increases with an increase in its molecular weight. The kinetics of adsorption data suggested that adsorption becomes slower with the increase in molecular weight of hydrocarbons. The equilibrium data suggested that that boron nitride is selective to paraffins in a paraffin-olefin mixture and hence may act as an "olefin generator". The ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST)-based selectivity for CH4/N2, C2H6/CH4, and C3H8/C3H6 was very high and probably higher than the majority of adsorbents reported in the literature. IAST-based calculations were also employed to simulate the binary mixture adsorption data for the gas pairs of CH4/N2, C2H6/CH4, C2H6/C2H4, and C3H8/C3H6. Finally, a simple mathematical model was employed to simulate the breakthrough behavior of the above-mentioned four gas pairs in a dynamic column experiment. The overall results suggest that nanoporous boron nitride can be used as a potential adsorbent for light hydrocarbon separation.
