Abstract
An exciting direction in metal-organic frameworks involves the design and synthesis of flexible structures which can reversibly adapt their structure when triggered by external stimuli. Controlling the extent and nature of response in such solids is critical in order to develop custom dynamic materials for advanced applications. Towards this, it is highly important to expand the diversity of existing flexible MOFs, generating novel materials and gain an in-depth understanding of the associated dynamic phenomena, eventually unlocking key structure-property relationships. In the present work, we successfully utilized reticular chemistry for the construction of two novel series of highly crystalline, flexible rare-earth MOFs, RE-thc-MOF-2 and RE-teb-MOF-1. Extensive single-crystal to single-crystal structural analyses coupled with detailed gas and vapor sorption studies, shed light onto the unique responsive behavior. The development of these series is related to the reported RE-thc-MOF-1 solids which were found to display a unique continuous breathing and gas-trapping property. The synthesis of RE-thc-MOF-2 and RE-teb-MOF-1 materials represents an important milestone as they provide important insights into the key factors that control the responsive properties of this fascinating family of flexible materials and demonstrates that it is possible to control their dynamic behavior and the associated gas and vapor sorption properties.

Abstract
In this article, we report the adsorption and catalytic study of the three-dimensional (3D) metal-organic framework (MOF) {Mn2(1,4-bdc)2(DMF)2} (1) (1,4-bdcH2, 1,4-benzene dicarboxylic acid; DMF, N,N-dimethylformamide) together with the synthesis and structure of two new Mn(II)-MOFs {Mn3(Br-bdc)3(DMF)4} (2) and {Mn3(NO2-bdc)3(DMF)4} (3) (Br-bdcH2, 2-bromo-1,4-benzene dicarboxylic acid; NO2-bdcH2, 2-nitro-1,4-benzene dicarboxylic acid) under solvothermal conditions. Compounds 2 and 3 have two-dimensional (2D) extended structures and feature trimeric {Mn3(CO2)6} units that serve as secondary building units for the frameworks. The desolvated compound of 1, denoted as 1', having potential Mn(II) open metal sites (OMSs) lined in a one-dimensional (1D) Mn-chain interconnected by carboxylate groups, exhibits guest-selective adsorption of solvent vapours wherein the compound shows a stepwise profile with H2O vapour, while a gated isotherm was recorded with MeOH. After realizing the favourable interaction of 1' with polar solvent molecules, we have used Mn(II) OMSs in 1' for efficient cyanosilylation reactions of aromatic aldehydes. We have recorded 100% conversion for eight aromatic aldehydes, while several other aldehydes showed appreciable conversion. Notably, the recorded conversions in the case of many substrates are higher than those for many other reported MOF catalysts.

Abstract
Coordination flexibility assisted porosity has been introduced into an Iron-isonicotinate metal organic framework (MOF), (Fe(4-PyC) 2 .(OH). The framework showed CO 2 -specific gate opening behavior, which gets tuned as a function of temperature and pressure. The MOF's physisorptive porosity towards CO 2 , CH 4 , and N 2 was investigated; it adsorbed only CO 2 via a gate opening phenomenon. The isonicotinate, representing a borderline soft base, is bound to the hard Fe 3+ centre through monodentate carboxylate and pyridyl nitrogen. This moderately weak binding enables isonicotinate to spin like a spindle under the CO 2 pressure opening the gate for a sharp increase in CO 2 uptake at 333 mmHg (At 298K, the CO 2 uptake increases from 0.70 to 1.57 mmol/g). We investigated the MOF's potential for CO 2 /N 2 and CO 2 /CH 4 gas separation aided by this gating. IAST model reveals that the CO 2 /N 2 selectivity jumps from 325 to 3131 when the gate opens, while the CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity increases three times. Interestingly, this Fe-isonicotinate MOF did not follow the trend set by our earlier reported Hard-Soft Gate Control (established for isostructural M 2+ -isonicotinate MOFs (M = Mg, Mn)). However, we account for this discrepancy using the different oxidation state of metals confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and magnetism.

Abstract
Flexible metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are known for their vast functional diversities and variable pore architectures. Dynamic motions or perturbations are among the highly desired flexibilities, which are key to guest diffusion processes. Therefore, probing such motions, especially at an atomic level, is crucial for revealing the unique properties and identifying the applications of MOFs. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) are the most important techniques to characterize molecular motions but require pure samples or large single crystals (>5 × 5 × 5 μm3), which are often inaccessible for MOF synthesis. Recent developments of three-dimensional electron diffraction (3D ED) have pushed the limits of single-crystal structural analysis. Accurate atomic information can be obtained by 3D ED from nanometer- and submicrometer-sized crystals and samples containing multiple phases. Here, we report the study of molecular motions by using the 3D ED method in MIL-140C and UiO-67, which are obtained as nanosized crystals coexisting in a mixture. In addition to an ab initio determination of their framework structures, we discovered that motions of the linker molecules could be revealed by observing the thermal ellipsoid models and analyzing the atomic anisotropic displacement parameters (ADPs) at room temperature (298 K) and cryogenic temperature (98 K). Interestingly, despite the same type of linker molecule occupying two symmetry-independent positions in MIL-140C, we observed significantly larger motions for the isolated linkers in comparison to those reinforced by π-π stacking. With an accuracy comparable to that of SCXRD, we show for the first time that 3D ED can be a powerful tool to investigate dynamics at an atomic level, which is particularly beneficial for nanocrystalline materials and/or phase mixtures.

Abstract
Porphyrinic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising photosensitizers due to the lack of self-aggregation of porphyrin in aqueous solution. However, how the topology of porphyrinic MOFs affects the generation of singlet oxygen (1 O2 ) is unclear. Here, the effect of the topology of porphyrinic MOFs on their photodynamic performance is reported. Four porphyrinic zirconium MOFs (MOF-525, MOF-545, PCN-223 and PCN-224 with different topologies: ftw, csq, shp and she, respectively) were selected to study the influence of topology on the photodynamic antibacterial performance. The 1 O2 generation and the photodynamic antibacterial performance followed an decreasing order of MOF-545>MOF-525>PCN-224>PCN-223. The results reveal that the pore size, the distance between porphyrin, and the number of porphyrin per Zr6 O8 cluster in MOFs greatly affected 1 O2 generation. This work provides guidance for designing new MOFs for efficient photodynamic sterilization.

Abstract
We demonstrate herein an all-optical switch based on stimuli-responsive and photochromic-free metal-organic framework (HKUST-1). Ultrafast near-infrared laser pulses stimulate a reversible 0.4 eV blue shift of the absorption band with up to 200 s-1 rate due to dehydration and concomitant shrinking of the structure-forming [Cu2 C4 O8 ] cages of HKUST-1. Such light-induced switching enables the remote modulation of intensities of photoluminescence of single crystals of HKUST-1 as well visible radiation passing through the crystal by 2 order of magnitude. This opens up the possibility of utilyzing stimuli-responsive MOFs for all-optical data processing devices.

Abstract
Tuning of pore function and size (surface area) are two key factors that play important roles in the performance of metal-organic-frameworks (MOFs) as catalysts. The catalytic performance of two bulk and nanosized MOFs with different functional groups such as a Brønsted base and Lewis acid was studied in line with the sustainable development of catalysts and green chemistry principles. Bifunctional imine decorated TMU-33, ([Cd3(BDC)3(OPP)(DMF)2]·2DMA)n (TMU-33), (OPP: N,N'-(oxybis(4,1-phenylene))bis(1-(pyridin-4yl)methanimine)), with an adjustable structure and amine functionalized TMU-40, [Zn(BDC)(L*)]·DMF, (L*: N1,N2-bis(pyridin-4-ylmethylene)ethane-1,2-diamine), were evaluated in the C-C bond forming reaction under mild and green conditions. The results show that the nanosized samples of bifunctional TMU-33 which simultaneously have an imine and open metal site exhibit higher performance as Knoevenagel catalysts. Furthermore, among the nanosized samples, the nanoplate TMU-33 with more access to open metal sites shows the highest catalytic activity without any side product in water, at room temperature for 5 min, which confirms that the Lewis acid is the effective catalyst for this reaction. The catalyst could be reused for at least three cycles without any significant loss of its activity. The performance of the structure indicates that the tuning of functionality of MOFs can be a very promising route for the extension of green catalysts.

Abstract
The new nanoporous framework [Gd4(di-nitro-BPDC)4(NO2)3(OH)(H2O)5]·(solvent) (I; di-nitro-BPDC2- = 2,2'-dinitrobiphenyl-4,4'-dicarboxylate) has been designed and synthesized through a simple one-pot reaction. In addition to its exceptional thermal and water stabilities, I exhibited multifunctional properties. A sudden CO2 uptake to a maximum of 4.51 mmol g-1 (195 K and 1 bar) with notable selectivity over O2 and N2 (CO2/O2 = 39 at 195 K and 0.10 bar, CO2/N2 = 46 at 195 K and 0.10 bar) and an isosteric adsorption enthalpy of 20.7(4) kJ mol-1 have been revealed. Depending on the temperature and humidity, I also showed distinguished superprotonic conductivities with a maximum value and activation energy of 6.17 × 10-2 S cm-1 (55 °C, 99 RH%, and 1 V AC voltage) and 0.43 eV, respectively. With respect to the linear dependence of conductivities on both temperature (25-55 °C at 99 RH%) and humidity (55-99 RH% at 25 °C), the potential of I in temperature and humidity sensing was evaluated, disclosing an excellent sensing resolution and exceptional accuracy, precision, and repeatability for the measurements.

Abstract
Much has been written about the fundamental aspects of the metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). Still, details concerning the MOFs with structural flexibility are not comprehensively understood. However, a dramatic increase in research activities concerning rigid MOFs over the years has brought deeper levels of understanding for their properties and applications. Nonetheless, robustness and flexibility of such smart frameworks are intriguing for different research areas such as catalysis, adsorption, etc. This manuscript overviews the different aspects of framework flexibility. The review has touched lightly on several ideas and proposals, which have been demonstrated within the selected examples to provide a logical basis to obtain a fundamental understanding of their synthesis and behavior to external stimuli.

Abstract
Stimuli responsive materials (SRMs) respond to environmental changes through chemical and/or structural transformations that can be triggered by interactions at solid-gas or solid-liquid interfaces, light, pressure or temperature. SRMs span compositions as diverse as organic polymers and porous inorganic solids such as zeolites. Metal–organic materials (MOMs), sustained by metal nodes and organic linker ligands are of special interest as SRMs. SR-MOMs have thus far tended to exhibit only one type of transformation, e.g. breathing, in response to one stimulus, e.g. pressure change. We report [Zn2(4,4′-biphenyldicarboxylate)2(4,4′-bis(4-pyridyl)biphenyl)]n, an SR-MOM, which exhibits six distinct phases and four types of structural transformation in response to various stimuli. The observed structural transformations, breathing, structural isomerism, shape memory effect, and change in the level of interpenetration, are previously known individually but have not yet been reported to exist collectively in the same compound. The multi-dynamic nature of this SR-MOM is mainly characterised by using in-situ techniques. Stimuli-responsive porous materials are attractive for a range of applications, but each material typically exhibits only one type of transformation. Here, the authors report on a metal–organic material that exhibits six distinct phases as a result of four types of structural transformation in response to different stimuli.

Abstract
Flexible metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted great interest for their dynamically structural transformability in response to external stimuli. Herein, we report a switchable "breathing" or "gate-opening" behavior associated with the phase transformation between a narrow pore (np) and a large pore (lp) in a flexible pillared-layered MOF, denoted as MOF-1 as, which is also confirmed by SCXRD and PXRD. The desolvated phase (MOF-1 des) features a unique stepwise adsorption isotherm for N2 coupled with a pronounced negative gas adsorption pressure. For comparison, however, no appreciable CO2 adsorption and gate-opening phenomenon with stepwise sorption can be observed. Furthermore, the polar micropore walls decorated with thiophene groups in MOF-1 des reveals the selective sorption of toluene over benzene and p-xylene associated with self-structural adjustment in spite of the markedly similar physicochemical properties of these vapor molecules.

Abstract
Photo-functional infinite coordinated polymers (ICPs) were synthesized that consist of the photochromic dithienylethene (DTE) and a luminescent bridging unit to give enhanced fluorescence in the solid state. We could fabricate well-ordered micropatterns of these ICPs by a soft-lithographic method, which repeatedly showed high contrast on-off fluorescence switching.

Abstract
We study here the behavior of flexible adsorbent materials, or soft porous crystals, when used in practical applications as nanostructured composites such as core-shell particles or mixed matrix membranes. Based on simple models and the well-established laws of elasticity, we demonstrate how the presence of a binder results in an attenuation of the adsorption-induced stress and deformation. In the case where the adsorbent undergoes adsorption-induced structural transitions, such as the gate opening phenomenon occurring in some metal-organic frameworks, we show that the presence of the binder will result in shifts of the adsorption-induced transition pressures.

Two new isomorphous three-dimensional porous coordination polymers, {[Cd(bpe)0.5(bdc)(H2O)]·EtOH}n (1) and {[Cd(bpe)0.5(bdc)(H2O)]·2H2O}n (2) [bpe = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane, and H2bdc = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid], have been synthesized by altering the solvent media. Both structures contain one-dimensional channels filled with metal-bound water and guest solvent molecules, and desolvated frameworks show significant changes in structure. However, exposure to the solvent vapors (water and methanol) reverts the structure back to the as-synthesized structure, and thus, the reversible flexible nature of the structure was elucidated. The flexibility and permanent porosity were further reinforced from the CO2 adsorption profiles (195 and 273 K) that show stepwise uptake. Moreover, a high selectivity for O2 over N2 at 77 K was realized. The framework exhibits interesting solvent vapor adsorption behavior with dynamic structural transformation depending upon the size, polarity, and coordination ability of the solvent molecules. Further investigation was conducted by solid state (113)Cd nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy that unambiguously advocates the reversible transformation "pentagonal-bipyramidal CdO6N → octahedral CdO5N" geometry in the desolvated state. For the first time, (113)Cd NMR has been used as a probe of structural flexibility in a porous coordination polymer system.

Abstract
A polar coordination polymer has been synthesised that exhibits anomalous anisotropic thermal expansion. The guest water molecules of the as-synthesised complex can be removed on activation without loss of crystal singularity to yield the fully dehydrated form that shows considerably different thermal expansion behaviour compared to its hydrated analogue.

Abstract
A known pillared layered metal-organic framework [Co2(ndc)2(bpy)] is shown to undergo a change in degree of interpenetration from a highly porous doubly-interpenetrated framework (2fa) to a less porous triply-interpenetrated framework (3fa). The transformation involves an intermediate empty doubly-interpenetrated phase (2fa') which has been isolated for the first time for this kind of phenomenon by altering the conditions of activation of the as-synthesized material. Interestingly, all the transformations occur in single-crystal to single-crystal fashion. Changes in degree of interpenetration have not been explored much to date and their implications with regard to the porosity of MOFs still remain largely unknown. The present study not only provides a better understanding of such dramatic structural changes in MOF materials, but also describes an original way of controlling interpenetration by carefully optimizing the temperature of activation. In addition to studying the structural mechanism of conversion from 2fa to 3fa, sorption analysis has been carried out on both the intermediate (2fa') and the triply-interpenetrated (3fa) forms to further explain the effect that switching of interpenetration mode has on the porosity of the MOF material.
