Abstract
This review introduces the synthetic organic chemical value of α-bromocarbonyl compounds with tertiary carbons. This α-bromocarbonyl compound with a tertiary carbon has been used primarily only as a radical initiator in atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) reactions. However, with the recent development of photo-radical reactions (around 2010), research on the use of α-bromocarbonyl compounds as tertiary alkyl radical precursors became popular (around 2012). As more examples were reported, α-bromocarbonyl compounds were studied not only as radicals but also for their applications in organometallic and ionic reactions. That is, α-bromocarbonyl compounds act as nucleophiles as well as electrophiles. The carbonyl group of α-bromocarbonyl compounds is also attractive because it allows the skeleton to be converted after the reaction, and it is being applied to total synthesis. In our survey until 2022, α-bromocarbonyl compounds can be used to perform a full range of reactions necessary for organic synthesis, including multi-component reactions, cross-coupling, substitution, cyclization, rearrangement, stereospecific reactions, asymmetric reactions. α-Bromocarbonyl compounds have created a new trend in tertiary alkylation, which until then had limited reaction patterns in organic synthesis. This review focuses on how α-bromocarbonyl compounds can be used in synthetic organic chemistry.

Abstract
An organocatalytic enantioselective alkylation of α,α-disubstituted aldehydes with 3-bromooxindoles is reported. Enantioenriched oxindoles with vicinal quaternary stereocenters are accessed by an asymmetric conjugate addition process of branched aldehydes with o-azaxylylene intermediates (indol-2-ones). Key to the success of highly diastereo- and enantioselective transformations is the combined use of a triphenylsilyl-protected β-amino alcohol catalyst derived from the spiropyrrolidine scaffold and 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid. This study also presents a rare example of aldehyde alkylation with the formation of consecutive quaternary stereocenters.

Abstract
An asymmetric conjugate addition of aldehydes with o-azaxylylene intermediates (indol-2-ones) from 3-bromooxindoles has been developed. The use of a novel spiro-pyrrolidine (SPD)-derived bifunctional N-sulfonylated amide catalyst is essential for a highly diastereo- and enantioselective transformation to provide a wide array of enantioenriched C3 quaternary oxindoles with structurally diverse β-aldehyde appendages. Further application of this synthetic methodology enables the construction of the tricyclic cores of akuammiline-type alkaloids.

Abstract
The catalytic asymmetric synthesis of 3-allyl-3'-aryl 2-oxindoles has been shown via the Pd(0)-catalyzed decarboxylative allylation of allylenol carbonates. This methodology provides access to a variety of 2-oxindole substrates (5a-v) with all-carbon quaternary stereocenters (up to 94% ee) at the pseudobenzylic position under additive-free and mild conditions. The synthetic potential of this method was shown by the asymmetric synthesis of the tetracyclic core of the diketopiparazine-based alkaloid azonazine (11).

Abstract
The enantioselective nickel-catalyzed reaction of tethered allene-ketones with (hetero)arylboronic acids or potassium vinyltrifluoroborate is described. Carbonickelation of the allene gives allylnickel species, which undergo cyclization by 1,2-allylation to produce chiral tertiary-alcohol-containing aza- and carbocycles in high diastereo- and enantioselectivities.

Abstract
Toluene and its derivatives are petroleum-derived raw materials produced from gasoline by catalytic reformation. These abundant chemical feedstocks are commonly used as solvents in organic synthesis. The C(sp3)−H functionalization of these unactivated substrates has been widely used to directly introduce benzylic motifs into diverse molecules to furnish important compounds. Despite these advances, progress in asymmetric catalysis remains underdeveloped. Here, we report photoinduced radical-based enantioselective C(sp3)−C(sp3) coupling reactions of activated ketones with toluene and its derivatives by means of chiral acid catalysis. With a La(OTf)3/pybox complex catalyst, a variety of chiral 3-hydroxy-3-benzyl-substituted 2-oxindoles, including many conventionally difficult-to-access variants, are obtained directly from isatins in high yields with good to excellent enantioselectivities. Acenaphthoquinone is also compatible with the use of a chiral phosphoric acid (CPA) catalyst, leading to another series of important enantioenriched tertiary alcohols. Asymmetric transformations involving abundant chemical feedstocks such as toluene and its derivatives are rather rare. Here, the authors report the radical enantioselective C(sp3) −C(sp3) coupling of activated ketones with toluenes by means of chiral acid catalysis to afford enantioenriched tertiary alcohols.

Abstract
An efficient Cu(ii)-PHOX-catalyzed malonate addition onto 3-hydroxy 3-indolyl-2-oxindoles is envisioned to afford excellent enantioselectivities (up to >99% ee) in high chemical yields. Detailed characterization techniques including X-ray, NMR, CV and EPR experiments suggest that a Cu(ii)-complex is involved as an active species in this process. Applying this strategy, an advanced intermediate of cyclotryptamine alkaloids has been synthesized in few steps for a general approach to bis-cyclotryptamine alkaloids.

Abstract
Described herein is an environmentally benign method for the synthesis of multisubstituted 3-alkoxylated-2-oxindoles 3 via direct alkoxylation of 3-halooxindoles 1. A wide variety of such multisubstituted 3-alkoxylated-2-oxindole scaffolds were smoothly obtained in good yields (up to 94%) by heating in an oil bath at 35 °C for 24 h. A particularly valuable feature of this method was the development of environment-friendly chemistry using alcohols 2 as both the substrates and solvents in the presence of a catalytic amount of base.

Abstract
Stereoconvergent catalysis is an important subset of asymmetric synthesis that encompasses stereoablative transformations, dynamic kinetic resolutions, and dynamic kinetic asymmetric transformations. Initially, only enzymes were known to catalyze dynamic kinetic processes, but recently various synthetic catalysts have been developed. This Review summarizes major advances in nonenzymatic, transition-metal-promoted dynamic asymmetric transformations reported between 2005 and 2015.

Abstract
An enantioconvergent catalytic process has the potential to convert a racemic starting material to a single highly enantioenriched product with a maximum yield of 100%. Three mechanistically distinct approaches to effecting enantioconvergent catalysis are identified, and recent examples of each are highlighted. These processes are compared to related, non-enantioconvergent methods.

Abstract
The catalytic asymmetric amination reaction of 3-bromooxindoles with indolines for the construction of the N1-C3 linkage stereogenic centers has been realized for the first time. Moreover, the racemic substrates (3-substituted indolines) were also applicable under the same chiral conditions. The newly developed method conveniently led to a formal synthesis of (+)-psychotrimine.
