Aggregation-Induced Photoluminescent Changes of Naphthyridine-BF2Complexes

Two-Photon-Responsive "TICT + AIE" Active Naphthyridine-BF2 Photoremovable Protecting Group: Application for Specific Staining and Killing of Cancer Cells

The combined effects of twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomena have demonstrated a significant influence on excited-state chemistry. These combined TICT and AIE features have been extensively utilized to enhance photodynamic and photothermal therapy. Herein, we demonstrated the synergistic capabilities of TICT and AIE phenomena in the design of the photoremovable protecting group (PRPG), namely, NMe2-Napy-BF2. This innovative PRPG incorporates TICT and AIE characteristics, resulting in four remarkable properties: (i) red-shifted absorption wavelength, (ii) strong near-infrared (NIR) emission, (iii) viscosity-sensitive emission property, and (iv) accelerated photorelease rate. Inspired by these intriguing attributes, we developed a nanodrug delivery system (nano-DDS) using our PRPG for cancer treatment. In vitro studies showed that our nano-DDS manifested effective cellular internalization, specific staining of cancer cells, high-resolution confocal imaging of cancerous cells in the NIR region, and controlled release of the anticancer drug chlorambucil upon exposure to light, leading to cancer cell eradication. Most notably, our nano-DDS exhibited a substantially increased two-photon (TP) absorption cross section (435 GM), exhibiting its potential for in vivo applications. This development holds promise for significant advancements in cancer treatment strategies.

Dual-functional porphyrinic zirconium-based metal-organic framework for the fluorescent sensing of histidine enantiomers and Hg2

A novel fluorescence sensor based on a porphyrinic zirconium-based metal-organic framework, L-cysteine-modified PCN-222 (L-Cys/PCN-222), was developed to selectively recognize histidine enantiomers and sensitively detect Hg2+. The dual-functional sensor was successfully prepared via the solvent-assisted ligand incorporation method and characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, circular dichroism (CD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and nitrogen adsorption-desorption analyses. L-Cys/PCN-222 not only showed a higher quenching response for L-histidine than that for D-histidine with a fast fluorescent response rate of <40 s but also exhibited low detection limits for L- and D-histidine (2.48 μmol L-1 and 3.85 μmol L-1, respectively). Moreover, L-Cys/PCN-222 was employed as a fluorescent and visual sensor for the highly sensitive detection of Hg2+ in the linear range of 10-500 μmol L-1, and the detection limit was calculated to be 2.79 μmol L-1 in surface water. The specific and selective recognition of chiral compounds and metal ions by our probe make it suitable for real field applications.

A chiral fluorescent COF prepared by post-synthesis modification for optosensing of imazamox enantiomers

We report a post-synthesis modification for the preparation of a novel chiral fluorescent covalent organic framework (COF) for selective recognization of imazamox enantiomers. In this study, chiral COF was firstly synthesized via a Schiff-base reaction between 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalaldehyde (Dha) and 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene (Tab) followed by a nucleophilic substitution using (1S)-(+)-10-camphorsulfonyl chloride as chiral modifier. The resulting regular spherical chiral COF Dha Tab not only presented the high optical efficiency, strong covalent bond structure, good crystallinity, large specific surface area but also showed the specific enantioselectivity and quick identification for imazamox enantiomers among five pesticide enantiomers (S/R-imazamox, acephate, acetochlor, propisochlor and metalaxyl). The detection limits for S- and R-imazamox were 4.20 μmol/L and 3.03 μmol/L, respectively. Meanwhile, the enantiomeric excess value (5.30 %) manifested that the chiral COF Dha Tab had the strong adsorption ability to imazamox enantiomers and more higher affinity for R-imazamox. This chiral fluorescent COF opened up a new way for the recognition of enantiomers.

Structure and bonding of proximity-enforced main-group dimers stabilized by a rigid naphthyridine diimine ligand

The development of ligands capable of effectively stabilizing highly reactive main-group species has led to the experimental realization of a variety of systems with fascinating properties. In this work, we computationally investigate the electronic, structural, energetic, and bonding features of proximity-enforced group 13-15 homodimers stabilized by a rigid expanded pincer ligand based on the 1,8-naphthyridine (napy) core. We show that the redox-active naphthyridine diimine (NDI) ligand enables a wide variety of structural motifs and element-element interaction modes, the latter ranging from isolated, element-centered lone pairs (e.g., E = Si, Ge) to cases where through-space π bonds (E = Pb), element-element multiple bonds (E = P, As) and biradical ground states (E = N) are observed. Our results hint at the feasibility of NDI-E₂ species as viable synthetic targets, highlighting the versatility and potential applications of napy-based ligands in main-group chemistry.

On the Use of Polymer-Based Composites for the Creation of Optical Sensors: A Review

Polymers are widely used in many areas, but often their individual properties are not sufficient for use in certain applications. One of the solutions is the creation of polymer-based composites and nanocomposites. In such materials, in order to improve their properties, nanoscale particles (at least in one dimension) are dispersed in the polymer matrix. These properties include increased mechanical strength and durability, the ability to create a developed inner surface, adjustable thermal and electrical conductivity, and many others. The materials created can have a wide range of applications, such as biomimetic materials and technologies, smart materials, renewable energy sources, packaging, etc. This article reviews the usage of composites as a matrix for the optical sensors and biosensors. It highlights several methods that have been used to enhance performance and properties by optimizing the filler. It shows the main methods of combining indicator dyes with the material of the sensor matrix. Furthermore, the role of co-fillers or a hybrid filler in a polymer composite system is discussed, revealing the great potential and prospect of such matrixes in the field of fine properties tuning for advanced applications.

Chiral fluorescence recognition of glutamine enantiomers by a modified Zr-based MOF based on solvent-assisted ligand incorporation

In this study, three types of chiral fluorescent zirconium-based metal-organic framework materials were synthesized using l-dibenzoyl tartaric acid as the chiral modifier by the solvent-assisted ligand incorporation method, which was the porous coordination network yellow material, denoted as PCN-128Y. PCN-128Y-1 and PCN-128Y-2 featured unique chiral selectivity for the Gln enantiomers amongst seven acids and the highly stable luminescence property, which were caused by the heterochiral interaction and aggregation-induced emission. Furthermore, a rapid fluorescence method for the chiral detection of glutamine (Gln) enantiomers was developed. The homochiral crystals of PCN-128Y-1 displayed enantiodiscrimination in the quenching by d-Gln such that the ratio of enantioselectivity was 2.0 in 30 seconds at pH 7.0, according to the Stern-Volmer quenching plots. The detection limits of d- and l-Gln were 6.6 × 10-4 mol L-1 and 3.3 × 10-4 mol L-1, respectively. Finally, both the maximum adsorption capacities of PCN-128Y-1 for the Gln enantiomers (Q e(l-Gln) = 967 mg g-1; Q e(d-Gln) = 1607 mg g-1) and the enantiomeric excess value (6.2%) manifested that PCN-128Y-1 had strong adsorption capacity for the Gln enantiomers and higher affinity for d-Gln.

Diphosphino-Functionalized 1,8-Naphthyridines: a Multifaceted Ligand Platform for Boranes and Diboranes

A 1,8-naphthyridine diphosphine (NDP) reacts with boron-containing Lewis acids to generate complexes featuring a number of different naphthyridine bonding modes. When exposed to diborane B2 Br4 , NDP underwent self-deprotonation to afford [NDP-B2 Br3 ]Br, an unsymmetrical diborane comprised of four fused rings. The reaction of two equivalents of monoborane BBr3 and NDP in a non-polar solvent provided the simple phosphine-borane adduct [NDP(BBr3 )2 ], which then underwent intramolecular halide abstraction to furnish the salt [NDP-BBr2 ][BBr4 ], featuring a different coordination mode from that of [NDP-B2 Br3 ]Br. Direct deprotonation of NDP by KHMDS or PhCH2 K generates mono- and dipotassium reagents, respectively. The monopotassium reagent reacts with one or half an equivalent of B2 (NMe2 )2 Cl2 to afford NDP-based diboranes with three or four amino substituents.

Rigid π-Extended Boron Difluoride Complex with Mega-Stokes Shift for Bioimaging

The rational design of a rigid π-extended ligand, suitable for the formation of four-coordinate boron complexes, has led to the synthesis of the fused hexacyclic structure of carbazolo[2,1-c]phenanthridine. The photophysical characterization of the novel fluorophore revealed a significant Stokes shift whose intramolecular charge transfer origin has been corroborated by computational calculations. The usefulness of the reported N,N-difluoroboryl complex as fluorescent probe with large Stokes shift has been demonstrated for cancer cells imaging.

Red-emitting boron difluoride complexes with a mega-large Stokes shift and unexpectedly high fluorescence quantum yield

Introduction of a tetrahydroquinoxaline donor into boron difluoride complexes largely extended their emissions (617–684 nm), highly improved their fluorescence quantum yields (up to 0.68) and greatly increased their Stokes shifts (up to 209 nm).

Aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE)-active boron-difluoride dyes with reversible mechanochromic fluorescence

A novel class of solid-emissive boron-difluoride derivatives, using phenanthrenequinone hydrazone as ligands, were designed and efficiently synthesized. These dyes exhibit weak fluorescence in dilute solutions, but much higher fluorescence efficiency in aggregate states with a large stokes shift (over 70 nm) due to the their aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) characteristics. According to their photophysical properties and X-ray single crystal structure analysis, the AIEE was ascribed to the H(J)-aggregate formation aided by multiple intermolecular interactions to restrict intramolecular motion in the solid state. Moreover, their solid emissions could be reversibly tuned between “on” and “off” by mechanical grinding and recrystallization, due to the stacking model transition between H(J)-aggregation with loose molecular packing and J-aggregation with intense intermolecular interactions.

A class of AIEE-active mechanochromic boron-difluorides were reported, and the mechanochromism was ascribed to the transition between H(J)-aggregation with loose molecular packing and J-aggregation with intense intermolecular interactions.

Benzo[4,5]thiazolo[3,2- c][1,3,5,2]oxadiazaborinines: Synthesis, Structural, and Photophysical Properties

A family of highly emissive benzo[4,5]thiazolo[3,2- c][1,3,5,2]oxadiazaborinines, conjugated with the donor 4-dimethylaminophenyl group, was designed and synthesized. Their photophysical, both in solution and in the solid state, and structural properties were investigated. The influence of donor and acceptor substituents (R) in the benzothiazole unit on photophysical properties of complexes was found out. The tetrafluorobenzothiazole analogue exhibits nonbonded nuclear spin-spin coupling between fluorines from the BF₂ group and α-fluorine atom at the benzene ring. Additionally, this boron complex demonstrates a comparatively high solid-state fluorescence quantum yield (Φ = 0.34).

Crystal structure of N-(7-di-bromo-methyl-5-methyl-1,8-naphthyridin-2-yl)benzamide-pyrrolidine-2,5-dione (1/1)

The title compound, C17H13Br2N3O·C4H5NO2, is a co-crystal of N-(7-di-bromo-methyl-5-methyl-1,8-naphthyridin-2-yl)benzamide and pyrrolidine-2,5-dione (succinimide). The benzamide mol-ecule exhibits pseudo-mirror symmetry, with an r.m.s. deviation of the non-H atoms of 0.09 Å (except for the two Br atoms). The angle between the least-squares planes of the two mol-ecules is 26.2 (2)°. In the crystal, the two mol-ecules are mutually linked by N-H⋯O and N-H⋯N hydrogen bonds. The packing is consolidated by C-H⋯(O,N) hydrogen bonds and π-π stacking inter-actions.

Tetraphenylethene modified β-ketoiminate boron complexes bearing aggregation-induced emission and mechanofluorochromism

Two new thiazole-based β-ketoiminate boron complexes, namelyTTPE-HandTTPE-CN, were designed and successfully synthesized. The two compounds exhibited strong aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and evident mechanofluorochromic (MFC) properties.

Copper-assisted azide–alkyne cycloaddition chemistry as a tool for the production of emissive boron difluoride 3-cyanoformazanates

Emissive BF₂ complexes of 3-cyanoformazanates produced using CuAAC chemistry are described. Highlights include ferrocene-substituted derivatives with ‘turn-on’ fluorescence upon oxidation and a water soluble derivative with application as a cell-imaging agent.

The mol­ecule of the title 1,8-naphthyridine-BF₂ derivative, C₁₂H₁₀BBr₂F₂N₃O, is located on a mirror plane running parallel to the entire ring system and the attached methyl C atoms. Individual mol­ecules are stacked along the b-axis direction. The cohesion in the crystal structure is accomplished by C—H⋯F hydrogen bonds and additional off-set π–π inter­actions [centroid-to-centroid distance = 3.6392 (9) Å, slippage 0.472 Å], leading to the formation of a three-dimensional supra­molecular network.

Nitrogen-Containing Analog of Dibenzoylmethanate of Boron Difluoride: Luminescence, Structure, Quantum Chemical Modeling, and Delay Fluorescence

Boron difluoride of 3-amino-1,3-diphenyl-2-propene-1-onate (1) has been synthesized and its crystal structure has been determined. The comparative studies of 1 and its oxygen analog 1,3-diphenyl-1,3-dionate (dibenzoylmethanate) of boron difluoride (2) have been performed using the methods of stationary and time-resolved spectroscopy and quantum chemical modeling. It was established that at the transition from solutions to crystals, a bathochromic shift of the spectra and a significant increase of luminescence intensity of 1 take place. The luminescent properties of solutions of 1 and 2 are similar. The peculiarities of crystal packings of 1 and 2 are responsible for differences in crystals luminescent properties. For crystals of 2, one observes the luminescence of J-aggregates and excimers, while for 1, in which a dimer is an elementary structural fragment, only the excimer luminescence is registered. A delayed excimer fluorescence of the P-type was observed for crystals of 1 and 2 at room temperature. The intensity of the delayed fluorescence of 1 is 300-fold higher than that of 2. Strategy to enhance solid-state fluorescence and aggregation-induced emission enhancement effect in pyrimidine boron complexes

The synthesis and the solution/solid-state fluorescence properties of pyrimidine-based monoboron complexes differing in terms of the substituents [either two fluorine atoms (BF2 complex) or two phenyl groups (BPh2 complex)] on the boron atom are reported herein. Unrestricted C-Ar intramolecular rotation in the non-, trifluoromethyl-, and cyano-substituted derivatives resulted in negligible fluorescence in solution. On the other hand, methoxy- and dimethylamino-substituted analogues caused the restriction of the C-Ar intramolecular rotation and consequently resulted in relatively strong fluorescence in solution. The non-, trifluoromethyl-, and cyano-substituted derivatives showed a pronounced aggregation-induced emission enhancement effect. Dimethylamino-substituted derivatives exhibited solvatochromism in the fluorescence spectra. Substitution with BPh2 effectively enhanced the fluorescence quantum yield compared to the corresponding BF2 complexes in the solid-state.

High solid-state luminescence in propeller-shaped AIE-active pyridine–ketoiminate–boron complexes

Two pyridine-ketoiminate-based organoboron complexes were demonstrated to possess aggregation-induced emission, large Stokes shift and high quantum yield in the solid-state, which were rationalized through X-ray crystal analysis and electronic structure calculations.

New members of fluorescent 1,8-naphthyridine-based BF2 compounds: selective binding of BF2 with terminal bidentate N^N^O and N^C^O groups and tunable spectroscopy properties

Intensely luminescent 1,8-naphthyridine-BF2 complexes 1-9 containing terminal bidentate N^N^O and/or N^C^O groups are synthesized and structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, (1)H and (19)F NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Complexes 1-4 are synthesized from 2-acetamino-1,8-naphthyridine derivatives by a facile route. Selective bonding modes and the chemical stability of complexes 5 and 6 obtained by reacting BF3·Et2O with 1,8-naphthyridine derivatives bearing dual-functional groups (N^C^O and N^N^O) are investigated by crystal structure analysis and time-dependent density functional theory calculations. The products containing a BF2 core bound to a N^C^O chelating group are energetically favorable and can expand the range of derivatives by substitution at the 2-position. In this regard, a free -NH2 group at the 2-position of complex 7 obtained from 5 can be functionalized under a variety of pH conditions to generate complexes 8 and 9, which bear flexible coordination arms that can be used to recognize certain transition metals. The photophysical properties of the complexes are examined in solution and solid state at room temperature. Compared with those of the starting naphthyridine-based compounds, the naphthyridine-BF2 complexes display desirable light-absorbing properties and intense solution and solid-state emission with large Stokes shifts. Complex 4 in solution exhibited an emission quantum yield of 0.98. In complexes 5-9, the binding sites for the BF2 core change from N^N^O to N^C^O, which leads to red shifts of absorption and emission, excellent chemical stability and high emission quantum yields.

Near-infrared emitting fluorescent BODIPY nanovesicles for in vivo molecular imaging and drug delivery

Near-infrared fluorescent nanovesicles were prepared by self-assembly of block copolymer hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) boron-dipyrromethenes in aqueous solution. The fluorescence enhancement induced by dissociation of nanovesicles could be used as a smart imaging and diagnostic tool. This nanovesicle could encapsulate the antitumor drug, and provide a powerful platform for imaging-guided tumor-specific drug delivery and therapy.

Facile synthesis of highly fluorescent BF2 complexes bearing isoindolin-1-one ligand

A new class of isoindolin-1-one based BF₂ complexes containing pyridine or benzothiazole groups has been prepared from a “one-pot” reaction.
