Pressure versus temperature effects on intramolecular electron transfer in mixed-valence complexes

Coordination Polymer Based on a Triangular Carboxylate Core {Fe(μ3-O)(μ-O2CR)6} and an Aliphatic Diamine

Interaction of the pre-organized complex of iron(II) trimethylacetate and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) [Fe2(piv)4(phen)2] (1) (piv = (Me)3CCO2-)) with 1,6-diaminohexane (dahx) in anhydrous acetonitrile yielded a 1D coordination polymer [Fe3O(piv)6(dahx)1.5]n (2) and an organic salt of pivalic acid (H2dahx)(piv)2 (3). The structure of the obtained compounds was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The phase purity of the complexes was determined by powder X-ray diffraction analysis. According to the single-crystal X-ray analysis, coordination polymer 2 is formed due to the binding of a triangular carboxylate core {Fe3(μ3-O)(μ-piv)6} with an aliphatic diamine ligand. Thermal behavior was investigated for compounds 1 and 2 in an argon atmosphere.

The Ruthenium Nitrosyl Moiety in Clusters: Trinuclear Linear μ-Hydroxido Magnesium(II)-Diruthenium(II), μ3-Oxido Trinuclear Diiron(III)-Ruthenium(II), and Tetranuclear μ4-Oxido Trigallium(III)-Ruthenium(II) Complexes

The ruthenium nitrosyl moiety, {RuNO}6, is important as a potential releasing agent of nitric oxide and is of inherent interest in coordination chemistry. Typically, {RuNO}6 is found in mononuclear complexes. Herein we describe the synthesis and characterization of several multimetal cluster complexes that contain this unit. Specifically, the heterotrinuclear μ3-oxido clusters [Fe2RuCl4(μ3-O)(μ-OMe)(μ-pz)2(NO)(Hpz)2] (6) and [Fe2RuCl3(μ3-O)(μ-OMe)(μ-pz)3(MeOH)(NO)(Hpz)][Fe2RuCl3(μ3-O)(μ-OMe)(μ-pz)3(DMF)(NO)(Hpz)] (7·MeOH·2H2O) and the heterotetranuclear μ4-oxido complex [Ga3RuCl3(μ4-O)(μ-OMe)3(μ-pz)4(NO)] (8) were prepared from trans-[Ru(OH)(NO)(Hpz)4]Cl2 (5), which itself was prepared via acidic hydrolysis of the linear heterotrinuclear complex {[Ru(μ-OH)(μ-pz)2(pz)(NO)(Hpz)]2Mg} (4). Complex 4 was synthesized from the mononuclear Ru complexes (H2pz)[trans-RuCl4(Hpz)2] (1), trans-[RuCl2(Hpz)4]Cl (2), and trans-[RuCl2(Hpz)4] (3). The new compounds 4-8 were all characterized by elemental analysis, ESI mass spectrometry, IR, UV-vis, and 1H NMR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, with complexes 6 and 7 being characterized also by temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Magnetometry indicated a strong antiferromagnetic interaction between paramagnetic centers in 6 and 7. The ability of 4 and 6-8 to form linkage isomers and release NO upon irradiation in the solid state was investigated by IR spectroscopy. A theoretical investigation of the electronic structure of 6 by DFT and ab initio CASSCF/NEVPT2 calculations indicated a redox-noninnocent behavior of the NO ancillary ligand in 6, which was also manifested in TD-DFT calculations of its electronic absorption spectrum. The electronic structure of 6 was also studied by an X-ray charge density analysis.

Stepwise Stress-Induced Transformations of Metal-Organic Polyhedral Cluster-Based Assemblies: Where Conformational and Supramolecular Features Meet

Understanding the factors governing the formation of supramolecular structures and phase transitions between various forms of molecular crystals is pivotal for developing dynamic, stimuli-responsive materials and polymorph-controlled syntheses. Here, we investigate the pressure-induced dynamic of both the intrinsic molecular structure and the supramolecular network of a predesigned polyhedral oxo-centered zinc cluster incorporating monoanionic N,N'-diphenylformamidinate and featuring N-bonded phenyl groups in close proximity to the primary coordination sphere. We demonstrate that the model oxo cluster is prone to undergoing pressure-induced conformational transformations of the secondary coordination sphere and simultaneous stepwise (initially every second polyhedral molecule undergoes the conformational transformations) and reversible transitions from an ambient phase α to high-pressure phases β and γ, as single-crystal-to-single-crystal events. The observed phase transitions illustrate the key role of an interplay between the low-energy conformation perturbations and cooperative intra- and intermolecular noncovalent interactions.

Structural, Spectroscopic, and Theoretical Investigation of a T-Shaped [Fe3(μ3-O)] Cluster

The synthesis, X-ray crystal and electronic structures of [Fe₃(μ₃-O)(mpmae)₂(OAc)₂ Cl₃], 1, where mpmae-H = 2-(N-methyl-N-((pyridine-2-yl)methyl)amino)ethanol, are described. This cluster comprises three high-spin ferric ions and exhibits a T-shaped site topology. Variable-frequency electron paramagnetic resonance measurements performed on single crystals of 1 demonstrate a total spin S_T = 5/2 ground state, characterized by a small, negative, and nearly axial zero-field splitting tensor D = -0.49 cm^-1, E/D ≈ 0.055. Analysis of magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and magneto-structural correlations further corroborate the presence of a sextet ground-spin state. The observed ground state originates from the strong anti-ferromagnetic interaction of two iron(III) spins, with J = 115(5) cm^-1, that, in turn, are only weakly coupled to the spin of the third site, with j = 7(1) cm^-1. These exchange interactions lead to a ground state with magnetic properties that are essentially entirely determined by the weakly coupled site. The contributions of the individual spins to the total ground state of the cluster were monitored using variable-field ⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. Field-dependent spectra reveal that, while one of the iron sites exhibits a large negative internal field, typical of ferric ions, the other two sites exhibit small, but not null, negative and positive internal fields. A theoretical analysis reveals that these small internal fields originate from the mixing of the lowest S_T = 5/2 excited state into the ground state which, in turn, is induced by a minute structural distortion.

X-Ray Diffraction and Mössbauer Spectroscopy Studies of Pressure-Induced Phase Transitions in a Mixed-Valence Trinuclear Iron Complex

The mixed-valence complex Fe3 O(cyanoacetate)6 (H2 O)3 (1) has been studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis at pressures up to 5.3(1) GPa and by (synchrotron) Mössbauer spectroscopy at pressures up to 8(1) GPa. Crystal structure refinements were possible up to 4.0(1) GPa. In this pressure range, 1 undergoes two pressure-induced phase transitions. The first phase transition at around 3 GPa is isosymmetric and involves a 60° rotation of 50 % of the cyanoacetate ligands. The second phase transition at around 4 GPa reduces the symmetry from rhombohedral to triclinic. Mössbauer spectra show that the complex becomes partially valence-trapped after the second phase transition. This sluggish pressure-induced valence-trapping is in contrast to the very abrupt valence-trapping observed when compound 1 is cooled from 130 to 120 K at ambient pressure.

Anisotropic compressibility of the coordination polymer emim[Mn(btc)]

The effect of pressure on the crystal structure of a coordination polymer, emim[Mn(II)(btc)] (emim = 1-ethyl,3-methyl imidazolium cation, btc = 1,3,5-benzene-tricarboxylate), was investigated with single-crystal X-ray diffraction. At 4.3 GPa the unit-cell volume had decreased by 14% compared with ambient conditions. The unit-cell contraction is highly anisotropic, with the a- and b-axes decreasing by 5.5 and 9.5%, respectively, and the c-axis compressing a mere 0.25% up to 1.7 GPa followed by a 0.2% expansion between 1.7 and 4.3 GPa. The 0.2% increase in length of the c-axis in this interval happens above the quasi-hydrostatic limit of the pressure-transmitting medium and therefore it might be a consequence of strain gradients. Under ambient conditions, two MnO6 units are connected by two carboxylate ligands to form dimeric units. On increasing pressure, a non-bonded O atom from a bridging carboxylate group approaches the Mn atom, with the Mn-O distance decreasing from 2.866 (1) Å at 0.3 GPa to 2.482 (6) Å at 4.3 GPa, increasing the coordination environment of the Mn ion from six- to seven-coordinated.
