Abstract
A series of unsymmetric tetradentate β-diketiminato rare-earth metal monoalkyl complexes were synthesized, and their catalytic behavior has been well developed. Indole-incorporated β-diketiminato proligands H2L (L = MeC(NDipp)CHC(Me)NCH2CH2-3-(1-R-C8H4N), R = CH2-(2-C4H7O), L1; R = (CH2)2OMe, L2; Dipp = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) were prepared by the reaction of an arylamino-enone with 1-substituted-tryptamine in good yields. Treatment of the proligands with the rare-earth metal trialkyl complexes RE(CH2SiMe3)3(THF)2 generated the corresponding unsymmetric N,N,C,O-tetradentate β-diketiminato rare-earth metal monoalkyl complexes LRE(CH2SiMe3) (L1, RE = Y (1a), Gd (1b), Yb (1c), Lu (1d); L2, RE = Y (2a), Gd (2b), Yb (2c), and Lu(2d)). During the process, the activation of the sp2 C-H bond at the 2-position of the indole ring led to the formation of an unprecedented β-diketiminato dianion L2-, bonding to the rare-earth metal ions in a chelating N,N,C,O-tetradentate manner. Further studies indicated that these tetradentate rare-earth metal complexes could initiate the Oppenauer oxidation of secondary alcohols into the corresponding ketones in high yields. In the case of primary alcohols, a tandem Oppenauer oxidation and cross-aldol condensation occurred unexpectedly. Various α-mono-substituted benzylidene acetones, α,α'-bis-substituted benzylidene acetones and cyclohexanones were obtained under mild conditions only by controlling the molar ratio of alcohols to ketones. Notably, all these alkenylation ketones exhibited exclusive E configuration.

Abstract
Transfer hydrogenation (TH) is a powerful synthetic tool in the production of secondary alcohols from ketones by using a non-H2 hydrogen source along with metal catalysts. Among homogeneous catalysts, Ru(II) complexes are the most efficient catalysts. In our research, six novel ruthenium(II) complexes bearing bipyridine-based ligands [Ru(L1)Cl2] (1), [Ru(L1)(PPh3)Cl]Cl (2) and [Ru(L2)Cl2] (3) and N-heterocyclic carbene-supported pyridine (NCN) ligands [RuCp(L3)]PF6 (4), [RuCp*(L3)]PF6 (5), and [Ru(p-cymene)(L3)Cl]PF6 (6) (where L1 = 6,6'-bis(aminomethyl)-2,2'-bipyridine, L2 = 6,6'-bis(dimethylaminomethyl)-2,2'-bipyridine and L3 = 1,3-bis(2-methylpyridyl)imidazolium bromide) were synthesised and characterised by NMR spectroscopy, HRMS, and X-ray crystallography. The catalytic transfer hydrogenation of 28 ketones in 2-propanol at 80 °C in the presence of KOtBu (5 mol%) was demonstrated and the effect of ligands is highlighted. The results show that catalyst 1 exhibits improved TH efficiency compared to the commercially available Milstein catalyst and displays higher catalytic activity than 2 due to the steric effect from PPh3. From a combination of kinetic data and Eyring analysis, a zero-order dependence on the acetophenone substrate is observed, implying a rate-limiting hydride transfer step, leading to the proposed inner-sphere hydride transfer mechanism.

RSC Adv 2021; 11:15617-15631. Abstract
The diphosphine-ruthenium complex, [Ru(dppbz)(CO)2Cl2] (dppbz = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)benzene), where the two carbonyls are mutually cis and the two chlorides are trans, has been found to serve as an efficient precursor for the synthesis of new complexes. In [Ru(dppbz)(CO)2Cl2] one of the two carbonyls undergoes facile displacement by neutral monodentate ligands (L) to afford complexes of the type [Ru(dppbz)(CO)(L)Cl2] (L = acetonitrile, 4-picoline and dimethyl sulfoxide). Both the carbonyls in [Ru(dppbz)(CO)2Cl2] are displaced on reaction with another equivalent of dppbz to afford [Ru(dppbz)2Cl2]. The two carbonyls and the two chlorides in [Ru(dppbz)(CO)2Cl2] could be displaced together by chelating mono-anionic bidentate ligands, viz. anions derived from 8-hydroxyquinoline (Hq) and 2-picolinic acid (Hpic) via loss of a proton, to afford the mixed-tris complexes [Ru(dppbz)(q)2] and [Ru(dppbz)(pic)2], respectively. The molecular structures of four selected complexes, viz. [Ru(dppbz)(CO)(dmso)Cl2], [Ru(dppbz)2Cl2], [Ru(dppbz)(q)2] and [Ru(dppbz)(pic)2], have been determined by X-ray crystallography. In dichloromethane solution, all the complexes show intense absorptions in the visible and ultraviolet regions. Cyclic voltammetry on the complexes shows redox responses within 0.71 to -1.24 V vs. SCE. [Ru(dppbz)(CO)2Cl2] has been found to serve as an excellent pre-catalyst for catalytic transfer-hydrogenation and Oppenauer oxidation.

Abstract
The treatment of 1-benzyl-3-phenylthio/selenomethyl-1,3-dihydrobenzoimidazole-2-thione/selenone [L1-L4] with [(η5-Cp*)IrCl(μ-Cl)]2 at 25 °C followed by NH4PF6 results in [(η5-Cp*)Ir(L)Cl][PF6] (1-4 for L = L1 to L4), authenticated with high-resolution mass spectrometry (HR-MS) and multi-nuclei nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging (1H, 13C{1H} and 77Se{1H}). The structures of 1-4, established with single-crystal X-ray diffraction, reveal a "piano-stool" geometry around the Ir. The Ir-thio/selenoether (Ir-S/Ir-Se) bond distances (Å) are 2.347(18)-2.355(4)/2.4663(12)-2.4663(13) and Ir-thione/selenone (Ir-S/Ir-Se) distances are 2.4146(19)-2.417(2)/2.5141(16)-2.5159(12). The reaction of 1,2-phenylenediamine with benzylic alcohols and furfuryl alcohol under mild and ambient conditions, catalyzed efficiently with complexes 1-4, generates bisimine in situ. Cyclization and rearrangement via 1,3-hydride shift triggered by its electrophilic activation with Ir(iii) species finally results in 1,2-disubstituted benzimidazole. The yield of the heterocycles in this one-pot synthesis is excellent to good. The aldehydes generated in situ by aerial oxidation of alcohols in the presence of 1-4 as catalysts are precursors to the bisimine as the protocols of this heterocycle synthesis carried out in the absence of 1,2-phenylenediamine give them in excellent-to-good yield. The oxidation of alcohols by hydrogen transfer to acetone was catalyzed efficiently with complexes 1-4 and resulted in aldehyde/ketone in excellent-to-good yield. Each catalytic process is marginally more efficient with 1 than its counterparts.

Abstract
Pincer ligands have become ubiquitous in organometallic chemistry and homogeneous catalysis. Recently, new varieties of pincer ligands with non-symmetrical backbones and/or ligating groups have been reported and their application in transition metal complexes has been exploited in a variety of catalytic transformations. This non-symmetric approach vastly increases the structural and electronic diversity of this class of ligand. This approach has proven beneficial in a variety of ways, such as the use of a single weakly coordinating moiety, which can dissociate and thereby create a vacant coordination site to increase the catalyst activity. Additionally, this provides further access to chiral ligands and complexes for asymmetric induction. This perspective highlights recent, important examples of non-symmetric pincer ligands, which feature aryl or pyridine backbones, and the synthesis and use of subsequent complexes in catalytic transformations, and discusses the future potential of this type of ligand system.
