Ortho-aryl substituted DPEphos ligands: rhodium complexes featuring C-H anagostic interactions and B-H agostic bonds

The synthesis of new Schrock–Osborn Rh(i) pre-catalysts with ortho-substituted DPEphos ligands, [Rh(DPEphos-R)(NBD)][BAr^F₄] [R = Me, OMe, ⁱPr; Ar^F = 3,5-(CF₃)₂C₆H₃], is described. Along with the previously reported R = H variant, variable temperature ¹H NMR spectroscopic and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies show that these all have axial (C–H)⋯Rh anagostic interactions relative to the d⁸ pseudo square planar metal centres, that also result in corresponding downfield chemical shifts. Analysis by NBO, QTAIM and NCI methods shows these to be only very weak C–H⋯Rh bonding interactions, the magnitudes of which do not correlate with the observed chemical shifts. Instead, as informed by Scherer's approach, it is the topological positioning of the C–H bond with regard to the metal centre that is important. For [Rh(DPEphos–ⁱPr)(NBD)][BAr^F₄] addition of H₂ results in a Rh(iii) ⁱPr–C–H activated product, [Rh(κ³,σ-P,O,P-DPEphos-ⁱPr′)(H)][BAr^F₄]. This undergoes H/D exchange with D₂ at the ⁱPr groups, reacts with CO or NBD to return Rh(i) products, and reaction with H₃B·NMe₃/tert-butylethene results in a dehydrogenative borylation to form a complex that shows both a non-classical B–H⋯Rh 3c-2e agostic bond and a C–H⋯Rh anagostic interaction at the same metal centre.

Rh(i) complexes of ortho-substituted DPEphos-R (R = H, Me, OMe, ⁱPr) ligands show anagostic interactions; for R =ⁱPr C–H activation/dehydrogenative borylation forms a product exhibiting both B–H/Rh 3c-2e agostic and C–H/Rh anagostic motifs.

Organodiphosphines in Pt{η2-P(X)nP}Cl2 (n = 9–15, 17, 18) derivatives – Structural aspects

This review covers over 20 monomeric platinum complexes of Pt{η2-P(X)nP}Cl2 (n = 9–15, 17, 19) type. The chelating P,P-donor ligands create wide varieties of the metallocyclic rings: 12-membered (PC9P, PC3NCNC3P), 13-membered (PC3NC2NC3P), 14-membered (PC11P, PO(SiO)5P, PC2OC2OC2OC2P), 15-membered (PC12P), 16-membered (PCOC9OCP), 17-membered (P(C2O)4C2P), 18-membered (PC2OC9OC2P, PC4NC2NC2NC4P), 20-membered (P(C2O)5C2P), and 21-membered (POC2NC10NC2OP). For these complexes the most common is a predominantly cis-arranged with 17 examples and only four examples with trans-configuration. The total mean values of Pt–L bond distances in the complexes with cis- versus trans-configuration are: 2.252 Å (P trans to Cl), 2.355 Å (Cl trans to P) vs 2.288 Å (P trans to P), and 2.304 Å (Cl trans to Cl). There are examples which exist in cis- and trans-isomeric forms and distortion isomers. A brief survey on the structural data of almost 180 examples of Pt{η2-P(X)nP}Cl2 (n = 1–8) type complexes is added and discussed.

The elusive structure of Pd2(dba)3. Examination by isotopic labeling, NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis: synthesis and characterization of Pd2(dba-Z)3 complexes

Pd(0)2(dba)3 (dba = E,E-dibenzylidene acetone) is the most widely used Pd(0) source in Pd-mediated transformations. Pd(0)2(dba-Z)3 (Z = dba aryl substituents) complexes exhibit remarkable and differential catalytic performance in an eclectic array of cross-coupling reactions. The precise structure of these types of complexes has been confounding, since early studies in 1970s to the present day. In this study the solution and solid-state structures of Pd(0)2(dba)3 and Pd(0)2(dba-Z)3 have been determined. Isotopic labeling ((2)H and (13)C) has allowed the solution structures of the freely exchanging major and minor isomers of Pd(0)2(dba)3 to be determined at high field (700 MHz). DFT calculations support the experimentally determined major and minor isomeric structures, which show that the major isomer of Pd(0)2(dba)3 possesses bridging dba ligands found exclusively in a s-cis,s-trans conformation. For the minor isomer one of the dba ligands is found exclusively in a s-trans,s-trans conformation. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of Pd(0)2(dba)3·CHCl3 (high-quality data) shows that all three dba ligands are found over two positions. NMR spectroscopic analysis of Pd(0)2(dba-Z)3 reveals that the aryl substituent has a profound effect on the rate of Pd-olefin exchange and the global stability of the complexes in solution. Complexes containing the aryl substituents, 4-CF3, 4-F, 4-t-Bu, 4-hexoxy, 4-OMe, exhibit well-resolved (1)H NMR spectra at 298 K, whereas those containing 3,5-OMe and 3,4,5-OMe exhibit broad spectra. The solid-state structures of three Pd(0)2(dba-Z)3 complexes (4-F, 4-OMe, 3,5-OMe) have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction methods, which have been compared with Goodson's X-ray structure of Pd(0)2(dba-4-OH)3.
