Abstract
We describe the synthesis, crystallographic characterization of a new Cu-Salphen compound and its use as a host Lewis-acid against guest anions in two versions: a) free molecule, b) copolymerized with methyl methacrylate:n-butyl acrylate (1 : 4-wt.) as protective co-monomers. Higher contents in Cu-Salphen yielded larger and more homogeneous polymer sizes. Polymer size together with glass transitions, heat capacity, thermal degradation, guest-saturation degrees and host-guest species distribution profiles from spectrophotometric titrations explained growths of up to 630-fold in K11 and 180000-fold in K12 for the host's binding site attributable to a solvophobic protection from the macromolecular structure. Spectrofluorimetry revealed blue-shifted×13-16 larger luminescence for Cu-Salphen in the polymers (λem =488-498 nm) than that of the non-polymerized counterpart (λem =510-543 nm) and "turn-on" blue-shifted enhanced fluorescence upon guest association. We propose a cooperative incorporation of the guests occurring from the outer medium toward internally protected binding site pockets in the random coil polymer conformations.

Abstract
A unique B-N coordinated phenanthroimidazole-based zinc salen was synthesized. The zinc salen thus synthesized acts as a photocatalyst for the cycloaddition of carbon dioxide with terminal epoxides under ambient conditions. DFT study of the cycloaddition of carbon dioxide with terminal epoxide indicates the preference of the reaction pathway when photocatalyzed by zinc salen. We anticipate that this strategy will help to design new photocatalysts for CO2 fixation.

Abstract
This paper reports the synthesis and the deaggregation properties of a Lewis acidic Zn(II) salen-type Schiff-base complex derivative from diaminomaleonitrile and a systematic detailed study of its transmetalation with other metal ions in solution. In a solution of non-coordinating solvents, the complex is in a dimeric form, while in coordinating solvents or upon addition of a Lewis base it is stabilized as monomeric adducts. Experiments done in two solvents with different Lewis basicities indicate a major role of the stability of the starting adduct in transmetalation. Thus, using nitrate or perchlorate salts, acetonitrile solutions of the complex give an immediate and complete transmetalation with Cu2+, while with Co2+ and Ni2+ a much slower transmetalation rate is observed. Instead, using chloride salts a fast and complete transmetalation is observed for divalent ions of the first transition series (Mn2+, Fe2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+), indicating the role of the chloride in stabilizing the transition state of the transmetalation. On the other hand, DMF solutions of the complex are less prone to transmetalation, according with the greater basicity of the solvent and, hence, the greater stability of the related adducts with the complex. Therefore, the nature of the solvent and the counteranion allow controlling the transmetalation process of this Zn(II) Schiff-base complex.

Abstract
In the 1950s, Alan Turing showed that concerted reactions and diffusion of activating and inhibiting chemical species can autonomously generate patterns without previous positional information, thus providing a chemical basis for morphogenesis in Nature. However, access to these patterns from only one molecular component that contained all the necessary information to execute agonistic and antagonistic signaling is so far an elusive goal, since two or more participants with different diffusivities are a must. Here, we report on a single-molecule system that generates Turing patterns arrested in the solid state, where supramolecular interactions are used instead of chemical reactions, whereas diffusional differences arise from heterogeneously populated self-assembled products. We employ a family of hydroxylated organic salphen building blocks based on a bis-Schiff-base scaffold with portions responsible for either activation or inhibition of assemblies at different hierarchies through purely supramolecular reactions, only depending upon the solvent dielectric constant and evaporation as fuel.

Abstract
The study of metallopolymers with controllable helical sense remains in its infancy. We report arabinose-functionalized (Zn-salphen)-based conjugated polymers that display mirror-image circular dichroism spectra for L- and D-sugar sidechains respectively, signifying ordered (helical) coiling of the polymer backbone with opposite screw-sense preferences. The observation of different spectroscopic behavior and Cotton effects for a variety of solvents (in a reversible manner) and temperatures, ascribed to changes in the extent of intrachain (Zn⋅⋅⋅O(salphen) and π-stacking) interactions between Zn-salphen moieties, thus indicate the flexible, responsive and dynamic nature of the folded helical conformation in these systems. An application study signifying that activity can be governed by the structure and helical sense of the polymer is described.

Abstract
The development of efficient heterogeneous catalysts suitable for carbon capture and utilization (CCU) under mild conditions is a promising step towards mitigating the growing concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. Herein, we report the construction of a hydrogen-bonded 3D framework, {[Zn(hfipbba)(MA)]⋅3 DMF}n (hfipbba=4,4'-(hexaflouroisopropylene)bis(benzoic acid)) (HbMOF1) utilizing ZnII center, a partially fluorinated, long-chain dicarboxylate ligand (hfipbba), and an amine-rich melamine (MA) co-ligand. Interestingly, the framework possesses two types of 1D channels decorated with CO2 -philic (-NH2 and -CF3 ) groups that promote the highly selective CO2 adsorption by the framework, which was supported by computational simulations. Further, the synergistic involvement of both Lewis acidic and basic sites exposed in the confined 1D channels along with high thermal and chemical stability rendered HbMOF1 a good heterogeneous catalyst for the highly efficient fixation of CO2 in a reaction with terminal/internal epoxides at mild conditions (RT and 1 bar CO2 ). Moreover, in-depth theoretical studies were carried out using periodic DFT to obtain the relative energies for each stage involved in the catalytic reaction and an insight mechanistic details of the reaction is presented. Overall, this work represents a rare demonstration of rational design of a porous ZnII MOF incorporating multiple functional sites suitable for highly efficient fixation of CO2 with terminal/internal epoxides at mild conditions supported by comprehensive theoretical studies.

Abstract
We provide a comprehensive DFT investigation of the mechanistic details of CO2 fixation into styrene oxide to form styrene carbonate, catalyzed by potassium iodide-tetraethylene glycol complex. A detailed view on the intermediate steps of the overall reaction clarifies the role of hydroxyl substances as co-catalysts for the alkali halide-catalyzed cycloaddition. The increase of iodide nucleophilicity in presence of tetraethylene glycol is examined and rationalized by NBO and Hirshfeld charge analysis, and bond distances. We explore how different alkali metal salts and glycols affect the catalytic performance. Our results provide important hints on the synthesis of cyclic carbonates from CO2 and epoxides promoted by alkali halides and glycol complexes, allowing the development of more efficient catalysts.

Abstract
Processes for the conversion of CO2 to valuable chemicals are highly desired as a result of the increasing CO2 levels in the atmosphere and the subsequent elevating global temperature. However, CO2 is thermodynamically and kinetically inert to transformation and, therefore, many efforts were made in the last few decades. Reformation/hydrogenation of CO2 is widely used as a means to access valuable products such as acetic acids, CH4, CH3OH, and CO. The electrochemical reduction of CO2 using hetero- and homogeneous catalysts recently attracted much attention. In particular, molecular CO2 reduction catalysts were widely studied using transition-metal complexes modified with various ligands to understand the relationship between various catalytic properties and the coordination spheres above the metal centers. Concurrently, the coupling of CO2 with various electrophiles under homogeneous conditions is also considered an important approach for recycling CO2 as a renewable C-1 substrate in the chemical industry. This review summarizes some recent advances in the conversion of CO2 into valuable chemicals with particular focus on the metal-catalyzed reductive conversion and functionalization of CO2.

Abstract
In this work, we present the synthesis of a novel Zn-Salphen complex containing an allyl group, which was used as building block in the further preparation of a new family of functional terpolymers. These polymers were obtained through radical co-polymerization with methyl metacrylate (MMA) and n-butyl acrylate (nBuA) in different ratios. The supramolecular recognition behavior of each polymer was evaluated via potentiometric measurements against selected anions in aqueous media. Interestingly, this proof of concept study shows that these systems were selective against only fluoride (F−) or both, fluoride and acetate (OAc−), by tailoring the relative content of Zn-Salphen monomer, thus making them a promising starting point for modular design of chemical sensors through straightforward synthetic approaches.

Abstract
A series of novel hexanuclear 3d-4f complexes formulated as {[Ln2Zn4(μ3-OH)2L4(AcO)2(NO3)2(DMF)2]·2(CH3OH), LnIII = Dy3+ (1), Nd3+ (2), Tb3+ (3)} have been synthesized and characterized. These complexes 1-3 show excellent catalytic performance for the cycloaddition of CO2 and epoxides to obtain cyclic carbonates. The catalytic system has a wide substrate scope with high turnover numbers (9700) and high turnover frequencies (808 h-1) under mild conditions. Additionally, the catalysts could be conveniently prepared on a large scale and recycled.

Abstract
The aim of this perspective is to summarise the use of the reported 3d-4f Coordination Clusters (CCs) in catalytic reactions and to demonstrate the potential of this emerging field. The pioneering work of Shibasaki, Matsunaga and others, demonstrated the use of 3d-4f in situ systems to catalyse asymmetric organic transformations. Our recent studies show that well characterised 3d-4f CCs catalyse numerous organic transformations and useful mechanistic aspects of their catalysis can be obtained. Furthermore, we have shown that by manipulation of the metal ion coordination environment; the nature of the 3d and lanthanide ions and the organic periphery of the ligand can all improve the efficacy of a 3d-4f CC catalyst. All in situ formed and well characterized 3d-4f CCs involved in catalysis are discussed.

Abstract
An easily prepared and low-cost aluminium based metal complex catalyst was prepared using kojic acid (Hkoj) as a ligand, and this developed oxo-coordinated Al(koj)3 complex showed high activity and selectivity for the CO2 fixation reaction with epoxides under mild conditions without any organic solvents. Various cyclic carbonates were obtained in excellent yields (up to 99%). This stable catalytically active Al(koj)3 has strong Lewis acidity for the activation of epoxides, and meanwhile the hydroxy group in Al(koj)3 may play a role in boosting the catalytic activity through possible hydrogen bonding interactions with the epoxide.

Abstract
We detail the rational design of a series of bimetallic bis-ligand radical Ni salen complexes in which the relative orientation of the ligand radical chromophores provides a mechanism to tune the energy of intense intervalence charge transfer (IVCT) bands in the near infrared (NIR) region.
We detail the rational design of a series of bimetallic bis-ligand radical Ni salen complexes in which the relative orientation of the ligand radical chromophores provides a mechanism to tune the energy of intense intervalence charge transfer (IVCT) bands in the near infrared (NIR) region. Through a suite of experimental (electrochemistry, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy) and theoretical (density functional theory) techniques, we demonstrate that bimetallic Ni salen complexes form bis-ligand radicals upon two-electron oxidation, whose NIR absorption energies depend on the geometry imposed in the bis-ligand radical complex. Relative to the oxidized monomer [1˙]+ (E = 4500 cm–1, ε = 27 700 M–1 cm–1), oxidation of the cofacially constrained analogue 2 to [2˙˙]2+ results in a blue-shifted NIR band (E = 4830 cm–1, ε = 42 900 M–1 cm–1), while oxidation of 5 to [5˙˙]2+, with parallel arrangement of chromophores, results in a red-shifted NIR band (E = 4150 cm–1, ε = 46 600 M–1 cm–1); the NIR bands exhibit double the intensity in comparison to the monomer. Oxidation of the intermediate orientations results in band splitting for [3˙˙]2+ (E = 4890 and 4200 cm–1; ε = 26 500 and 21 100 M–1 cm–1), and a red-shift for [4˙˙]2+ using ortho- and meta-phenylene linkers, respectively. This study demonstrates for the first time, the applicability of exciton coupling to ligand radical systems absorbing in the NIR region and shows that by simple geometry changes, it is possible to tune the energy of intense low energy absorption by nearly 400 nm.

Abstract
A stable microporous anionic metal-organic framework (MOF), [(CH3)2NH2]6[Cd3L(H2O)2]·12H2O (1), has been synthesized via solvothermal assembly of a new resorcin[4]arene-functionalized dodecacarboxylic acid (H12L) and Cd(II) cations. The constructed MOF (1) was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and other physicochemical analyses. 1 exhibits a fascinating 3D microporous framework structure, in which the free water molecules and the [(CH3)2NH2]+ cations were located. Remarkably, the exposed Lewis acid Cd(II) sites of activated 1 make it an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the cycloaddition of CO2 with epoxides at 1 and 20 atm. Importantly, the activated samples of 1 can be reused at least five circles with excellent catalytic performance. Moreover, the fluorescence detection of Cr2O72- and Fe3+ was studied by using 1 as a potential luminescent sensor.

Abstract
New neutral and zwitterionic chiral NNO-donor scorpionate ligands 1 and 2 were designed to obtain new mononuclear and dinuclear NNO-heteroscorpionate aluminum complexes. Reaction of 1 with [AlR3 ] (R=Me, Et) in a 1:1 or 1:2 molar ratio afforded the neutral mononuclear alkyl complexes [AlR2 (κ2 -bpzappe)] {R=Me (3), Et (4); bpzappeH=2,2-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)-1-[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]-1-phenylethanol} and bimetallic complexes [{AlR2 (κ2 -bpzappe)}(μ-O){AlR3 }] [R=Me (5), Et (6)]. By reaction of complexes 3-6 with PhCH2 Br, mononuclear and dinuclear cationic aluminum complexes [AlR2 (κ2 -bbpzappe)]Br {R=Me (7), Et (8); bbpzappeH=N-benzyl-4-[2,2-bis(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-1-hydroxy-1-phenylethyl]-N,N-dimethylbenzenaminium bromide} and [{AlR2 (κ2 -bbpzappe)}(μ-O){AlR3 }]Br [R=Me (9), Et (10)] were synthesized. Both neutral aluminum complexes in the presence of Bu4 NBr and cationic aluminum complexes were investigated as catalysts for cyclic carbonate formation from epoxides and carbon dioxide. Amongst them, complex 10 was found to be an efficient one-component catalyst for the synthesis of cyclic carbonates from both monosubstituted and internal epoxides and was shown to have broad substrate scope.

Abstract
By adopting a shape-persistent bimetallic design approach, high initial molecular turnover frequencies (up to 14,800 h(-1)) for coupling of CO2 with epoxides in conjunction with (n)Bu4NI, plus excellent yields under mild conditions (1 bar of CO2, 45 °C) have been achieved for catalysts containing cofacial Zn-salphen units.
