Synthesis, Redox Activity of Rigid Ferrocenyl Dendrimers, and Isolation of Robust Ferricinium and Class-II Mixed-Valence Dendrimers

Diaqua-β-octaferrocenyltetraphenylporphyrin: a multiredox-active and air-stable 16π non-aromatic species

Herein the synthesis and properties of the first β-octaferrocenyltetraphenylporphyrin, {TPPFc₈(H₂O)₂}, in its extraordinary stable and non-aromatic 16π form are reported, showing seven separate reversible redox events.

Windmill-shaped octanuclear Zn/Ln (LnIII = Dy, Tb, Ho) heterometallic ensembles supported by a tetraferrocene scaffold

Utilizing a new ferrocene-based compartmental ligand, H₄L (1), a series of novel heterometallic complexes [{LZn(μ-OAc)Dy}₄(μ₄-H₂O)] (2), [{LZn(μ-OAc)Tb}₄(μ₄-H₂O)] (3), [{LZn(μ-OAc)Ho}₄(μ₄-H₂O)] (4), [L = Fe[(C₅H₄){-C(Me)[double bond, length as m-dash]N-N[double bond, length as m-dash]C₆H₃-(o-O)(m-O)}]₂] were synthesized and characterized. 2 and 3 crystallize in the monoclinic crystal system in the I2/m space group, whereas 4 crystallizes in the tetragonal crystal system in the I4/m space group. The tetra deprotonated ligand L^4- has two distinct coordination compartments: one pocket (2N, 2O) suitable for the transition metal (3d) ions and another pocket (4O) suitable for lanthanide (4f) metal ions. Additionally, the terminal phenoxo group can be utilized for cluster expansion. In all the complexes, the Zn^II ion is in a perfect square pyramidal (2N, 3O) geometry whereas the lanthanide ion has a coordination number of eight (8O) in a distorted biaugmented trigonal-prism geometry. The electrochemical properties of 2 and 3 along with ligand H₄L (1) were studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV). All the complexes display a similar type of electrochemical behavior viz., one quasi-reversible oxidation typical of a ferrocene/ferrocenium motif. The magnetic properties of all the complexes have also been investigated.

ROMP Synthesis of Iron-Containing Organometallic Polymers

The paper overviews iron-containing polymers prepared by controlled “living” ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). Developments in the design and synthesis of this class of organometallic polymers are highlighted, pinpointing methodologies and newest trends in advanced applications of hybrid materials based on polymers functionalized with iron motifs.

Key multi(ferrocenyl) complexes in the interplay between electronic coupling and electrostatic interaction

In this review, the properties of the most significant examples of multi(ferrocenyl) cations containing a number of ferrocenyl units from two to six are discussed and the results are compared with the outcomes of some of our recent studies on conjugated ferrocenyl complexes.

Porphyrins with a carbosilane dendrimer periphery as synthetic components for supramolecular self-assembly

The preparation of the shape-persistent carbosilane-functionalized porphyrins H2TPP(4-SiRR'Me)4, Zn(II)-TPP(4-SiRR'Me)4 (R = R' = Me, CH2CH=CH2, CH2CH2CH2OH; R = Me, R' = CH2CH=CH2, CH2CH2CH2OH; TPP = tetraphenyl porphyrin), H2TPP(4-Si(C6H4-1,4-SiRR'Me)3)4, and Zn(II)-TPP(4-Si(C6H4-1,4-SiRR'Me)3)4 (R = R' = Me, CH2CH=CH2; R = Me, R' = CH2CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH2) using the Lindsey condensation methodology is described. For a series of five samples their structures in the solid state were determined by single crystal X-ray structure analysis. The appropriate 0th and 1st generation porphyrin-based 1,4-phenylene carbosilanes form 2D and 3D supramolecular network structures, primarily controlled by either π-π interactions (between pyrrole units and neighboring phenylene rings) or directional molecular hydrogen recognition and zinc-oxygen bond formation in the appropriate hydroxyl-functionalized molecules. UV-Vis spectroscopic studies were carried out in order to analyze the effect of the dendritic branches on the optical properties of the porphyrin ring.

Sandwich complex-containing macromolecules: property tunability through versatile synthesis

Sandwich complexes feature unique properties as the physical and electronic properties of a hydrocarbon ligand or its derivative are integrated into the physical, electronic, magnetic, and optical properties of a metal. Incorporation of these complexes into macromolecules results in intriguing physical, electrical, and optical properties that were hitherto unknown in organic-based macromolecules. These properties are tunable through well-designed synthetic strategies. This review surveys many of the synthetic approaches that have resulted in tuning the properties of sandwich complex-containing macromolecules. While the past two decades have seen an ever-growing number of research publications in this field, gaps remain to be filled. Thus, we expect this review to stimulate research interest towards bridging these gaps, which include the insolubility of some of these macromolecules as well as expanding the scope of the sandwich complexes.
