Systematic Formation of Multilayered Core-Shell Microspheres through the Multistep Growth of Coordination Polymers

Photoinduced Delamination of Metal-Organic Framework Thin Films by Spatioselective Generation of Reactive Oxygen Species

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) built from different building units offer functionalities going far beyond gas storage and separation. In connection with advanced applications, e.g., in optoelectronics, hierarchical MOF-on-MOF structures fabricated using sophisticated methodologies have recently become particularly attractive. Here, we demonstrate that the structural complexity of MOF-based architectures can be further increased by employing highly spatioselective photochemistry. Using a layer-by-layer, quasi-epitaxial synthesis method, we realized a photoactive MOF-on-MOF hetero-bilayer consisting of a porphyrinic bottom layer and a tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-based top layer. Illumination of the monolithic thin film with visible light in the presence of oxygen gas results in the generation of reactive oxygen species (¹O₂) in the porphyrinic bottom layer, which lead to a photocleavage of the TPE units at the internal interface. We demonstrate that this spatioselective photochemistry can be utilized to delaminate the top layers, yielding two-dimensional (2D) MOF sheets with well-defined thickness. Experiments using atomic force microscopy (AFM) demonstrate that these platelets can be transferred onto other substrates, thus opening up the possibility of fabricating planar MOF structures using photolithography.

Preparation of ZIF@ADH/NAD-MSN/LDH Core Shell Nanocomposites for the Enhancement of Coenzyme Catalyzed Double Enzyme Cascade

The field of enzyme cascades in limited microscale or nanoscale environments has undergone a quick growth and attracted increasing interests in the field of rapid development of systems chemistry. In this study, alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) immobilized nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD⁺) were successfully immobilized on the zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs). This immobilized product was named ZIF@ADH/NAD-MSN/LDH, and the effect of the multi-enzyme cascade was studied by measuring the catalytic synthesis of lactic acid. The loading efficiency of the enzyme in the in-situ co-immobilization method reached 92.65%. The synthesis rate of lactic acid was increased to 70.10%, which was about 2.82 times that of the free enzyme under the optimal conditions (40 °C, pH = 8). Additionally, ZIF@ADH/NAD-MSN/LDH had experimental stability (71.67% relative activity after four experiments) and storage stability (93.45% relative activity after three weeks of storage at 4 °C; 76.89% relative activity after incubation in acetonitrile-aqueous solution for 1 h; 27.42% relative activity after incubation in 15% N, N-Dimethylformamide (DMF) solution for 1 h). In summary, in this paper, the cyclic regeneration of coenzymes was achieved, and the reaction efficiency of the multi-enzyme biocatalytic cascade was improved due to the reduction of substrate diffusion.

Helically structured metal-organic frameworks fabricated by using supramolecular assemblies as templates

The controlled formation of MOF-based superstructures with well-defined nanoscale sizes and exquisite morphologies represents a big challenge, but can trigger a new set of properties distinct from their bulk counterparts. Here we report on the use of a self-assembled organic object to template the first example of a nanoscale metal-organic framework (MOF) with a helical morphology. Two prototypical MOFs (HKUST-1 and MIL-100) were used to exemplify the growth of such materials on supramolecular assemblies. Interestingly, it was found that, dependent on the nature of the precursors, not only could well-defined helical MOF nanotubes be facilely fabricated, but novel helical bundle nanostructures could also be formed. These resultant MOF superstructures show additional optical properties and could be used as precursors for the preparation of chiral nanocarbons.
