An Encyclopedic Compendium on Chemosensing Supramolecular Metal-Organic Gels

Chemosensing, an interdisciplinary scientific domain, plays a pivotal role ranging from environmental monitoring to healthcare diagnostics and (inter)national security. Metal-organic gels (MOGs) are recognized for their stability, selectivity, and responsiveness, making them valuable for chemosensing applications. Researchers have explored the development of MOGs based on different metal ions and ligands, allowing for tailored properties and sensitivities, and have even demonstrated their applications as portable sensors such as paper-based test strips for practical use. Herein, several studies related to MOGs development and their applications in the chemosensing field via UV-visible or luminance along with electrochemical approach are presented. These papers explored MOGs as versatile materials with their use in sensing bio or environmental analytes. This review provides a foundational understanding of key concepts, methodologies, and recent advancements in this field, fostering the scientific community.

(N-Alkyloxalamido)-Amino Acid Amides as the Superior Thixotropic Phase Selective Gelators of Petrol and Diesel Fuels

(N-Alkyloxalamido)-amino acid amides 9-12 exhibit excellent gelation capacities toward some lipophilic solvents as well as toward the commercial fuels, petrol and diesel. Gelator 10 exhibits an excellent phase-selective gelation (PSG) ability and also possesses the highest gelation capacity toward petrol and diesel known to date, with minimum gelation concentration (MGC) values (%, w/v) as low as 0.012 and 0.015, respectively. The self-assembly motif of 10 in petrol and toluene gel fibres is determined from xerogel X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) data via the simulated annealing procedure (SA) implemented in the EXPO2014 program and refined using the Rietveld method. The elucidated motif is strongly supported by the NMR (NOE and variable temperature) study of 10 toluene-d8 gel. It is shown that the triple unidirectional hydrogen bonding between gelator molecules involving oxalamide and carboxamide groups, together with their very low solubility, results in the formation of gel fibres of a very high aspect ratio (d = 10-30 nm, l = 0.6-1.3 μm), resulting in the as-yet unprecedented capacity of gelling commercial fuels. Rheological measurements performed at low concentrations of 10 confirmed the strength of the self-assembled network with the desired thixotropic properties that are advantageous for multiple applications. Instantaneous phase-selective gelation was obtained at room temperature through the addition of the 10 solution to the biphasic mixture of diesel and water in which the carrier solvent was congealed along with the diesel phase. The superior gelling properties and PSG ability of 10 may be used for the development of more efficient marine and surface oil spill recovery and waste water treatment technologies as well as the development of safer fuel storage and transport technologies.

Self-Healing Oxalamide Organogelators of Vegetable Oil

The aim of this study was to assess the gelling potential of chiral oxalamide derivatives in vegetable oils. Special emphasis was given to the potential applications of the examined oil gels as sustained delivery systems and as fat substitutes in food products. The applicability of oil gelators is envisaged in food, cosmetics, and the pharmaceutical industry. The regulations requiring the elimination of saturated fats and rising concerns among consumers health motivated us to investigate small organic molecules capable of efficiently transforming from liquid oil to a gel state. The oxalamide organogelators showed remarkable gelation efficiency in vegetable oils, thermal and mechanical stability, self-healing properties, and a long period of stability. The physical properties of the gels were analysed by TEM microscopy, DSC calorimetry, and oscillatory rheology. The controlled release properties of acetylsalicylic acid, ibuprofen, and hydrocortisone were analysed by the LC-MS method. The influence of the oil type (sunflower, soybean, and olive oil) on gelation efficiency of diverse oxalamide derivatives was examined by oscillatory rheology. The oxalamide gelators showed thermoreversible and thixotropic properties in vegetable oils with a minimum gelation concentration of just 0.025 wt%. The substitution of palm fats with gelled sunflower oil applied in cocoa and milk spreads at gelator concentrations lower than 0.2 wt% have shown promising viscoelastic properties compared to that of the original food products.

Self-Sorting in Diastereomeric Mixtures of Functionalized Dipeptides

Self-sorting in functionalized dipeptide systems can be driven by the chirality of a single amino acid, both at a high pH in the micellar state and at a low pH in the gel state. The structures formed are affected to some degree by the relative concentrations of each component showing the complexity of such an approach. The structures underpinning the gel network are predefined by the micellar structures at a high pH. Here, we describe the systems prepared from two dipeptide-based gelators that differ only by the chirality of one of the amino acids. We provide firm evidence for self-sorting in the micellar and gel phases using small-angle neutron scattering and cryo-transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM), showing that complete self-sorting occurs across a range of relative concentrations.

Influence of odd-even effect and intermolecular interactions in 2D molecular layers of bisamide organogelators

Organogelators have a wide range of use in everyday life including drug delivery and controlled release, surface coating and paper industry. In this study, a series of model bisamides have been analyzed as potential organogelators. These molecules are connected by odd and even numbered methylene units (n) in length ranging from 2 to 9. By constructing layers of those molecules along the growth direction we provide an insight into the self-assembly process. A complete systematic analysis of the computational results with B3LYP/6-311+G** suggests that the self-assembly of these potential organogelators is influenced by the odd–even effect, the relative direction of amide carbonyl groups, the bridging spacer chain length and the presence of a chiral alpha carbon. The aforementioned factors alter the strength of the intermolecular hydrogen bonds as well as the van der Waals interactions, which in turn may affect the self-assembly process of gelation and result in the formation of aggregates with different shapes. It is found that molecules with short central chains have an energetic preference for antiparallel arrangement over their parallel analogues as a result of stronger hydrogen bonding interactions. As the central chain elongates, the free energy difference between antiparallel and parallel structures decreases suggesting a compromise between hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interactions. The complete structural analysis suggests ribbon-like structures for achiral even-antiparallel and woven-like structures for odd-parallel systems, respectively. Upon creation of asymmetry on the alpha carbon, a twisted ribbon-like and a coiled coil-like structure are observed for even and odd systems, respectively. Our computational results are in accordance with the experimental results and provide an insight into the self-assembly of layers of bisamides.

Our computational results rationalize the factors that affect the molecular self-assembly of bisamides and its role on gelation.

Self-Healing Hydrogel from a Dipeptide and HCl Sensing

Ordered self-assembly of small organic molecules may induce novel properties in a supramolecular arrangement and can act as advance functional materials. This paper discusses the development of a new stimuli-responsive dipeptide hydrogelator containing l-phenylalanine and α-aminoisobutyric acid (Aib). The dipeptide Boc-Phe-Aib-OH, on addition with three equivalent of sodium hydroxide and water, transformed into a robust hydrogel. The transparent hydrogel is self-healing in nature. The instant gelation is highly selective toward sodium hydroxide and does not need any sonication or heating-cooling cycle. The thixotropic nature of the gel has been confirmed by rheological step-strain experiments at room temperature. Moreover, in the oil-water mixture, the compound exhibits phase-selective gelation. When the gel cylinder is cut into pieces, it does not conduct electricity, but once self-healing occurs, it conducts electricity. The diffusion of rhodamine 6G through the hydrogel indicates the dynamic nature. The hydrogel is highly sensitive toward HCl, that is, in the presence of HCl vapor, the gel becomes deformed.

Rapidly Recoverable Thixotropic Hydrogels from the Racemate of Chiral OFm Monosubstituted Cyclo(Glu-Glu) Derivatives

Both chiral OFm monosubstituted cyclo(l-Glu-l-Glu) and cyclo(d-Glu-d-Glu) display a robust gelation ability in a variety of organic solvents and water. In contrast to an individual enantiomer, their racemate can form rapidly recoverable thixotropic hydrogels with a remarkably shorter thixotropic recovery time. This unexpected thixotropic behavior is induced by the random arrangement of d- and l-enantiomers in the cell units, leading to the formation of "pseudoracemate", noncrystalline self-assemblies in the resulting 3D fibrous network.

Cyclic Dipeptide-Based Ambidextrous Supergelators: Minimalistic Rational Design, Structure-Gelation Studies, and In Situ Hydrogelation

Ambidextrous supergelators are developed through structure-gelation screening of rationally designed cyclic dipeptides (CDPs). The organo- and hydrogels of CDPs were thoroughly characterized by their minimal gelation concentration (MGC) for organic and aqueous solvents, thermal stability (T_g), and viscoelastic properties. Intermolecular hydrogen bonding, the major driving force for gelation was evaluated using temperature-dependent nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The contribution of attractive van der Waals interaction of tBoc group in driving CDP gelation was ascertained using β-cyclodextrin (β-CD)-adamantane carboxylic acid (AC)-based host-guest gelation and ¹H NMR studies. The self-assembled fibrous network of CDPs in organic and aqueous solvents responsible for the molecular gelation was elucidated using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) analysis. Among the CDPs studied CDP-2 found to be supergelator with MGC of 0.3 wt % and form in situ hydrogels under simulated physiological conditions. The in situ gelation property was evaluated by the incorporation of curcumin, as a model study to demonstrate the drug delivery application. Furthermore, supergelator CDP-2 was found to exhibit in cellulo cytocompatibility. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out to propose the microscopic structure for the self-assembly of CDP compounds and intermolecular N-H···O hydrogen bonding interactions appear to stabilize the fibrous network. The hydrophobic interactions among the tert-butyloxycarbonyl (tBoc) groups and π-π stacking interactions between phenyl rings contribute to the further stabilization of self-assembled 2D fibrous networks of CDPs. Overall, the present study highlights the in situ gelation property of CDP-based supergelators and their potential for biomedical and regenerative medicine applications.

Substituent interference on supramolecular assembly in urea gelators: synthesis, structure prediction and NMR

Eighteen N-aryl-N'-alkyl urea gelators were synthesised in order to understand the effect of head substituents on gelation performance. Minimum gelation concentration values obtained from gel formation studies were used to rank the compounds and revealed the remarkable performance of 4-methoxyphenyl urea gelator 15 in comparison to 4-nitrophenyl analogue 14, which could not be simply ascribed to substituent effects on the hydrogen bonding capabilities of the urea protons. Crystal structure prediction calculations indicated alternative low energy hydrogen bonding arrangements between the nitro group and urea protons in gelator 14, which were supported experimentally by NMR spectroscopy. As a consequence, it was possible to relate the observed differences to interference of the head substituents with the urea tape motif, disrupting the order of supramolecular packing. The combination of unbiased structure prediction calculations with NMR is proposed as a powerful approach to investigate the supramolecular arrangement in gel fibres and help understand the relationships between molecular structure and gel formation.

Reactive organogels based on isoxazole esters: alkali metal ions selective gelation and crystallization

A methanol solution of a series of simple esters exhibited a response to different alkali bases, which formed solutions, organogels and crystals, respectively, when LiOH, NaOH and KOH were separately introduced.

Control of supramolecular chirality of nanofibers and its effect on protein adhesion

Chiral nanostructure, such as the double helix of DNA and α-helix of protein, plays an important role in biochemistry and material sciences. In the organism system, the biological entities always exhibit homochirality and show preference toward one specific enantiomer. How the opposite enantiomers will affect the chirality of the supramolecular nanostructures and their interactions with the biological molecules remains an important issue. In this study, two gelators bearing amphiphilic l-glutamide and d- or l-pantolactone (abbreviated as DPLG and LPLG) were designed, and their self-assembly behavior and interactions with proteins were investigated. It was found that both of the gelators could form gels in the mixed solvent of ethanol and water, and the corresponding gels were characterized with UV-vis spectroscopy, circular dichroism, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy. Although both gels formed nanofiber structures and showed many similar properties, their supramolecular chiralities were opposite, which was determined by the chirality of the terminal group. The chirality of the nanofibrous structure is found to influence the protein adhesion significantly. Quartz crystal microbalance technique was used to investigate the adsorption of human serum albumin on the nanofibrous structures. It was revealed that supramolecular nanostructure of DPLG exhibited stronger adhesive ability than that of LPLG, while there is no clear difference at a molecular level. This suggested that slightly different interactions between d and l substances with the biological molecules could be amplified when they formed chiral nanostructures. Molecular dynamic simulations were performed to verify the interaction between the two gelators and protein molecules. A possible model was proposed to explain the interaction between the nanofibers and the proteins.

The past, present, and future of molecular gels. What is the status of the field, and where is it going?

A Perspective is presented on the history and current understanding of molecular gels and the factors that must be considered to characterize them. The abilities of the most important structural, dynamic, and rheological tools available currently to provide the information necessary to follow the formation of a molecular gel from its initial sol phase and then to define it at different distance and time scales are discussed. Approaches to determining a priori when a molecule will gelate a selected liquid, as well as possible methodologies for overcoming current limitations in understanding molecular gels, are presented. Finally, some of the many potential and realized applications for these materials are enumerated.
