Abstract
Although N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have been known as ligands for organometallic complexes since the 1960s, these carbenes did not attract considerable attention until Arduengo et al. reported the isolation of a metal-free imidazol-2-ylidene in 1991. In 2001 Crabtree et al. reported a few complexes featuring an NHC isomer, namely an imidazol-5-ylidene, also termed abnormal NHC (aNHCs). In 2009, it was shown that providing to protect the C-2 position of an imidazolium salt, the deprotonation occurred at the C-5 position, affording imidazol-5-ylidenes that could be isolated. Over the last ten years, stable aNHCs have been used for designing a range of catalysts employing Pd(ii), Cu(i), Ni(ii), Fe(0), Zn(ii), Ag(i), and Au(i/iii) metal based precursors. These catalysts were utilized for different organic transformations such as the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction, C-H bond activation, dehydrogenative coupling, Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition (click reaction), hydroheteroarylation, hydrosilylation reaction and migratory insertion of carbenes. Main-group metal complexes were also synthesized, including K(i), Al(iii), Zn(ii), Sn(ii), Ge(ii), and Si(ii/iv). Among them, K(i), Al(iii), and Zn(ii) complexes were used for the polymerization of caprolactone and rac-lactide at room temperature. In addition, based on the superior nucleophilicity of aNHCs, relative to that of their nNHCs isomers, they were used for small molecules activation, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrous oxide (N2O), tetrahydrofuran (THF), tetrahydrothiophene and 9-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane (9BBN). aNHCs have also been shown to be efficient metal-free catalysts for ring opening polymerization of different cyclic esters at room temperature; they are among the most active metal-free catalysts for ε-caprolactone polymerization. Recently, aNHCs successfully accomplished the metal-free catalytic formylation of amides using CO2 and the catalytic reduction of carbon dioxide, including atmospheric CO2, into methanol, under ambient conditions. Although other transition metal complexes featuring aNHCs as ligand have been prepared and used in catalysis, this review article summarize the results obtained with the isolated aNHCs.

Abstract
Organocatalysis is highly efficient in the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters. A variety of initiators broaden the areas of organocatalysis in polymerization of different monomers, such as lactones, cyclic carbonates, lactides or gycolides, ethylene phosphates and phosphonates, and others. The mechanisms of organocatalytic ROP are at least as diverse as the mechanisms of coordination ROP; the study of these mechanisms is critical in ensuring the polymer compositions and architectures. The use of density functional theory (DFT) methods for comparative modeling and visualization of organocatalytic ROP pathways, in line with experimental proof of the structures of the reaction intermediates, make it possible to establish these mechanisms. In the present review, which continues and complements our recent manuscript that focused on DFT modeling of coordination ROP, we summarized the results of DFT modeling of organocatalytic ROP of cyclic esters and some related organocatalytic processes, such as polyester transesterification.

Abstract
This work examines the prospect of making stable mesoionic compounds of the type mesomeric betaine R+-CO2- from direct oxidative additions of carbon dioxide to suitably-delocalized singlet carbene moieties, with bold objectives of carbon sequestration and overall energy storage. A set of possible candidates for such mesoionic compounds is theoretically explored through DFT calculations, inspecting coupling paths, thermodynamic and kinetic stabilities, and geometric and electronic structural features. Among others, the addressed cationic parts include aromatic rings in their broader sense, phenalene systems, and odd linear polyenic chains. Various structurally-close neutral alternatives such as oxiranones or carbene-acid forms are also considered. In the linear polyenic chain family, there is stark contrast between 4N + 1 and 4N - 1 lengths, with ensuing substantial consequences for stabilities and structures. Amino substitutions can favor mesoionic arrangements through their cation-stabilizing π-donor properties, further supported by possible strong intramolecular hydrogen bonds, but they can also contribute to weaken their kinetic stability through the existence of stable neutral imino alternatives. All in all, mesoionics including tropylium, phenalene, or 4N + 1 odd polyene frames as cationic parts could be reasonable targets.

Abstract
This work demonstrates the first-ever completely metal-free approach to the capture of CO2 from air followed by reduction to methoxyborane (which produces methanol on hydrolysis) or sodium formate (which produces formic acid on hydrolysis) under ambient conditions. This was accomplished using an abnormal N-heterocyclic carbene (aNHC)-borane adduct. The intermediate involved in CO2 capture (aNHC-H, HCOO, B(OH)3) was structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Interestingly, the captured CO2 can be released by heating the intermediate, or by passing this compound through an ion-exchange resin. The capture of CO2 from air can even proceed in the solid state via the formation of a bicarbonate complex (aNHC-H, HCO3, B(OH)3), which was also structurally characterized. A detailed mechanism for this process is proposed based on tandem density functional theory calculations and experiments.

Abstract
Carbon dioxide can form compounds with nitrogen heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) based on azoles through noncovalent interactions or by covalent bonding. A narrow dependence on the carbene structure has been observed for the preference for one or the other type of bonding, as revealed by a series of physicochemical descriptors. In our survey, a set of NHCs based on the azole family (three classical, three abnormal, and one remote) was shown to bind CO2 at the accurate G4MP2 computational level. In most cases, exothermic reaction profiles towards the covalently bound form were found, which reached stabilization enthalpies of up to -77 kJ mol-1 for the remote carbene case. Both noncovalent and covalent minima and the corresponding transition state that connects them have been identified as stationary points along the reaction coordinate.

Abstract
This review is designed to foster the discussion regarding the viability of postcombustion CO2 capture by water-lean solvents, by separating fact from fiction for both skeptics and advocates. We highlight the unique physical and thermodynamic properties of notable water-lean solvents, with a discussion of how such properties could translate to efficiency gains compared to aqueous amines. The scope of this review ranges from the purely fundamental molecular-level processes that govern solvent behavior to bench-scale testing, through process engineering and projections of process performance and cost. Key discussions of higher than expected CO2 mass transfer, water tolerance, and compatibility with current infrastructure are presented along with current limitations and suggested areas where further solvent development is needed. We conclude with an outlook of the status of the field and assess the viability of water-lean solvents for postcombustion CO2 capture.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) with aprotic heterocyclic anions (AHA) are attractive candidates for CO(2) capture technologies. In this study, a series of AHA ILs with 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ([emim](+)) cations were synthesized, and their physical properties (density, viscosity, and ionic conductivity) were measured. In addition, CO(2) solubility in each IL was determined at room temperature using a volumetric method at pressures between 0 and 1 bar. The AHAs are basic anions that are capable of reacting stoichiometrically with CO(2) to form carbamate species. An interesting CO(2) uptake isotherm behavior was observed, and this may be attributed to a parallel, equilibrium proton exchange process between the imidazolium cation and the basic AHA in the presence of CO(2), followed by the formation of "transient" carbene species that react rapidly with CO(2). The presence of the imidazolium-carboxylate species and carbamate anion species was verified using (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopy. While the reaction between CO(2) and the proposed transient carbene resulted in cation-CO(2) binding that is stronger than the anion-CO(2) reaction, the reactions of the imidazolium AHA ILs were fully reversible upon regeneration at 80 °C with nitrogen purging. The presence of water decreased the CO(2) uptake due to the inhibiting effect of the neutral species (protonated form of AHA) that is formed.

Abstract
In the reaction of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate [C2C1Im][OAc] ionic liquid with carbon dioxide at 125 °C and 10 MPa, not only the known N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-CO2 adduct I, but also isomeric aNHC-CO2 adducts II and III were obtained. The abnormal NHC-CO2 adducts are stabilized by the presence of the polarizing basic acetate anion, according to static DFT calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics studies. A further possible reaction pathway is facilitated by the high basicity of the system, deprotonating the initially formed NHC-CO2 adduct I, which can then be converted in the presence of the excess of CO2 to the more stable 2-deprotonated anionic abnormal NHC-CO2 adduct via the anionic imidazolium-2,4-dicarboxylate according to DFT calculations on model compounds. This suggests a generalizable pathway to abnormal NHC complex formation.
