Synthesis of Doubly Ethyl-Bridged Bis(p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene) and Its Supramolecular Polymerization with Viologen Dimer

Pagoda[n]arenes (n = 4, 5): Extremely Strong Binders for the Tropylium Cation

Herein, host-guest complexation between pagoda[n]arenes (n = 4, P4; n = 5, P5) and tropylium cation (G) was investigated in detail. It was found that both P4 and P5 showed surprisingly strong binding affinities toward the tropylium cation with association constants of more than 10⁷ M^-1 for the 1:1 host-guest complexes. The theoretical calculations showed different host-guest complexion ways for complexes G@P4 and G@P5 and the strong π···π interactions and multiple C-H···π interactions play a very important role in the formation of these stable complexes, respectively. Moreover, the switchable processes of guest binding and release in the complexes can be effectively controlled by redox stimuli, and they can be also visible by the color and fluorescence changes.

Concentration-dependent supramolecular self-assembly of A1/A2-asymmetric-difunctionalized pillar[5]arene

A series of A1/A2-bromoalkoxy-and-hydroxy-difunctionalized pillar[5]arenes were synthesized by the removal of the pillar[5]arene-bearing benzyl group using catalytic hydrogenation. The difunctionalized pillar[5]arene bearing 8-bromooctoxy and benzyloxy substituents at the A1/A2 positions formed pseudo[1]rotaxane at low concentration and double-threaded supramolecular dimer at high concentration. The supramolecular self-assembly behavior has been probed with multiple methods including varying (variable) concentration 1H NMR spectroscopy, diffusion-ordered spectroscopy (DOSY), dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), and single-crystal X-ray analysis.

Two-Dimensional Conductive Metal-Organic Frameworks Based on Truxene

Two dimensional conductive metal-organic frameworks (2D cMOFs) have been widely applied as electrocatalysts, electronic devices, and sensors. In addition, their intrinsic electronic properties could be efficiently tuned via varying the conjugated linkers. Herein, we report a novel 2D cMOF based on complexation of 2,3,7,8,12,13-hexahydroxyl truxene and copper ions via the energy economical interfacial reaction. This 2D cMOF was obtained as a brilliant black powder and showed a bulk electrical conductivity of 3.5 × 10^-3 S cm^-1 at 30 °C. Additionally, the cMOF-modified glassy carbon electrode could act as an electrochemical sensor for sensing paraquat with a limit of detection at 4.1 × 10^-8 M (S/N = 3). The accession of truxene-Cu to the cMOF family would shed new light on the impact of the organic conjugated linker and broaden the scope of cMOFs' applications.

Amphiphilic calixresorcinarene associates as effective solubilizing agents for hydrophobic organic acids: construction of nano-aggregates

Here we represent the first example of the formation of mixed nanoscale associates, constructed from amphiphilic calixresorcinarenes and hydrophobic carboxylic acids including drugs. The amidoamino-calixresorcinarene self-associates effectively solubilize hydrophobic carboxylic acids - drugs such as naproxen, ibuprofen, ursodeoxycholic acid and aliphatic dodecanoic acid - with the formation of the mixed aggregates with the macrocycle/substrate stoichiometry from 1/1 to 1/7. The ionization of organic acids and the peripheral nitrogen atoms of the macrocycles with the subsequent inclusion of hydrophobic acids into the macrocycle self-associates is the driving force of solubilization. In some cases, this leads to the co-assembly of the macrocycle polydisperse associates into supramolecular monodisperse nanoparticles with the diameter of about 100 nm. The efficiency of drug loading into the nanoparticles is up to 45% and depends on the structure of organic acid. The dissociation of the mixed aggregates and release of organic acid are attained by decreasing pH.

Synthesis of a disulfide-bridged bispillar[5]arene and its application in supramolecular polymers

A disulfide-bridged bispillar[5]arene was synthesized efficiently and applied to fabricate supramolecular polymers, which were redox-responsive and could be used to prepare fluorescent water-dispersible nanospheres.

Self-healing polymer materials constructed by macrocycle-based host-guest interactions

Self-healing polymers, which can spontaneously recover themselves after being ruptured, result in enhanced lifetimes for materials and open up a fascinating direction in material science. Macrocycle-based host-guest interactions, one of the most crucial non-covalent interactions, play a key role in self-healing material fabrication. This review aims to highlight the very recent and important progress made in the area of self-healing polymer materials by focusing on cyclodextrins (CDs), crown ethers, cucurbit[n]urils (CBs), calix[n]arenes and pillar[n]arenes with special guest groups and tailored structures. In addition, we also propose future research directions and hope that this review can in a way reflect the current situation and future trends in this developing area.
