Abstract
Monitoring therapeutic drugs and their elimination is crucial because they may cause severe side effects on the human body. Methotrexate (MTX) is a widely used anti-cancer drug, which is highly expensive, and the detection of unwanted overdoses of MTX using traditional procedures is time-consuming and involves complex instrumentation. In this work, we have developed a nanocomposite material using phosphorene, cystine, and gold (Ph-Cys-Au) that shows excellent optical properties. This nanocomposite can be used as an optical sensing platform for the detection of MTX in the range 0-260 μM. The synthesized sensing platform is very sensitive, selective, and cost-effective for the detection of MTX. Ph-Cys-Au can effectively detect MTX in aqueous media with a limit of detection (LOD) of about 0.0266 nM (for a linear range of 0-140 μM) and 0.0077 nM (for a linear range of 160-260 μM). The nanocomposite is equally selective for real samples, such as human blood serum (HBS) and artificial urine (AU) with a LOD of 0.0914 nM and 0.0734 nM, respectively. We have also determined the limit of quantification (LOQ); the LOQ values for the aqueous media were 0.0807 nM (for a linear range of 0-140 μM) and 0.0234 nM (for a linear range of 160-260 μM), whereas, the values for HBS and AU were around 0.2771 nM and 0.2226 nM, respectively. Moreover, the nanocomposite also provides a feasible platform for cytotoxicity screening in cancerous cells (Caco-2 cell lines) and non-cancerous cells (L-929 cell lines).

Abstract
The detection of nitrophenolic explosives is important in counterterrorism and environmental protection, but it is still a challenge to identify the nitroaromatic compounds among those with a similar structure. Herein, a simple tetraphenylethene (TPE) derivative with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics was synthesized and used as a fluorescent sensor for the detection of nitrophenolic explosives (2, 4, 6-trinitrophenol, TNP and 2, 4-dinitrophenol, DNP) in water solution and in a solid state with a high selectivity. Meanwhile, it was found that only hydroxyl containing nitrophenolic explosives caused obvious fluorescence quenching. The sensing mechanism was investigated by using fluorescence titration and 1H NMR spectra. This simple AIE-active probe can potentially be applied to the construction of portable detection devices for explosives.

Abstract
In this paper, we described a straightforward one-step chemical method for the synthesis of semiconductor quantum dots(QDs)-block copolymer brushes functionalized graphene oxide(GO) fluorescence nanohybrids. The azobenzene-terminated block copolymer poly(N-isopropylacrylamid)-b-poly(styrene-co-5-(2-methacryoylethyloxymethyl)-8-quinolinol)(PNIPAM-b-P(St-co-MQ)) was modified on the surface of GO sheets via host-guest interactions between β-cyclodextrin-modified GO and azobenzene moieties, and simultaneously CdSe/ZnS QDs were integrated on the block copolymer brushes through the coordination between 8-hydroxyquinoline units in the polymer brushes and CdSe/ZnS QDs. The resulting fluorescence nanohybrid exhibited dual photoluminescence at 620 nm and 526 nm, respectively, upon excitation at 380 nm and LCST-type thermo-responsive behavior which originated from the change in the PNIPAM conformation in the block copolymer brushes of GO sheets.

Abstract
Efficient FRET systems are developed combining colloidal CdSe quantum dots (QDs) donors and BODIPY acceptors. To promote effective energy transfer in FRET architectures, the distance between the organic fluorophore and the QDs needs to be optimized by a careful system engineering. In this context, BODIPY dyes bearing amino-terminated functionalities are used in virtue of the high affinity of amine groups in coordinating the QD surface. A preliminary QD surface treatment with a short amine ligand is performed to favor the interaction with the organic fluorophores in solution. The successful coordination of the dye to the QD surface, accomplishing a short donor-acceptor distance, provides effective energy transfer already in solution, with efficiency of 76 %. The efficiency further increases in the solid state where the QDs and the dye are deposited as single coordinated units from solution, with a distance between the fluorophores down to 2.2 nm, demonstrating the effectiveness of the coupling strategy.

Abstract
Here, a fast and eco-friendly one-pot hydrothermal technique is utilized for the synthesis of nitrogen/sulfur-co-doped fluorescent carbon quantum dots (NS-CQDs) from a simple precursor of citric acid (CA) and thiosemicarbazide (TSC). The obtained NS-CQDs exhibited strong blue emission under UV light, with fluorescence quantum yield (QY) of ~37.8%. The Commission internationale de l'eclairage (CIE) coordinates originated at (0.15, 0.07), which confirmed the blue fluorescence of the synthesized NS-CQDs. Interestingly, the prepared NS-CQDs were successfully used as a selective nanoprobe for the monitoring of environmentally hazardous explosive picric acid (PA) in different nitro- and non-nitro-aromatic derivatives of PA. The mechanism of the NS-CQDs was also explored, and was posited to occur via the fluorescence resonance electron transfer (FRET) process and non-fluorescent complex formation. Importantly, this system possesses excellent biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity in HeLa cervical cancer cells; hence, it can potentially be used for PA detection in analytical, environmental, and pathological applications. Furthermore, the practical applicability of the proposed sensing system to pond water demonstrated the feasibility of our system along with good recovery. Graphical abstract.

Abstract
The emergence of bacterial resistance has become one of the top global concern, and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) provide alternative strategies for the development of new antimicrobial agent. Herein, three small sizes (1.5-4.0 nm) of well-dispersed AgNPs were successfully synthesized using a thermo-sensitive P(NIPAM-co-MQ) copolymer with coordination ability as a stabilizer. The copolymer stabilized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs@P) displayed good thermo-sensitive characteristics and solution stability at pH = 6.5-8.0. AgNPs@P had high-efficiency and long-term antimicrobial properties for Gram-positive bacteria (S. aureus) and Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli). In particular, AgNPs@P3 with ultrasmall size (1.59 nm) exhibited better antimicrobial activity against both normal bacteria and antibiotic-resistant bacteria with a very low MIC value of 4.05 μg/mL. Moreover, AgNPs@P also showed an interesting temperature-dependent antibacterial activity mainly owing to the effect of thermo-sensitive copolymer on AgNPs. It was found that the antibacterial activity of the AgNPs@P also was affected by the proportion of copolymer, sizes of AgNPs, and experimental temperature. The antibacterial mechanism of AgNPs@P involved a variety of ways including destroying cell membranes, internalization of AgNPs and generation of ROS. Our research provides a new perspective for the preparation of effective nanosilver antimicrobial agents.

Abstract
Building novel functional nanomaterials with a polymer is one of the most dynamic research fields at present. Here, three amphiphilic block copolymers of 8-hydroxyquinoline derivative motifs (MQ) with excellent coordination function were synthesized by Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer Polymerization (RAFT) polymerization. The coordination micelles were prepared through the self-assembly process, which the MQ motifs were dispersed in the hydrophobic polystyrene (PSt) blocks and hydrophilic Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAM)) blocks, respectively. The dual-emission micelles including the intrinsic red light emission of quantum dots (QDs) and the coordination green light emission of Zn2+-MQ complexes were built by introducing the CdSe/ZnS and CdTe/ZnS QDs in the core and shell precisely in the coordination micelles through the coordination-driven self-assembly process. Furthermore, based on the principle of three primary colors that produce white light emission, vinyl carbazole units (Polyvinyl Carbazole, PVK) with blue light emission were introduced into the hydrophilic PNIPAM blocks to construct the white light micelles that possess special multi-emission properties in which the intrinsic red light emission of QDs, the coordination green light of Zn2+-MQ complexes, and the blue light emission of PVK were synergized. The dual and multi-emission hybrid micelles have great application prospects in ratiometric fluorescent probes and biomarkers.

Abstract
Signal generation techniques for visual detection of analytes have received a great deal of attention in various sensing fields. These approaches are considered to be advantageous when instrumentation cannot be employed, such as for on-site assays, point-of-care tests, and he althcare diagnostics in resource-constrained areas. Amongst various visual detection approaches explored for non-invasive quantitative measurements, ratiometric fluorescence sensing has received particular attention as a potential method to overcome the limitations of intensity-based probes. This technique relies on changes in the intensity of two or more emission bands (induced by an analyte), resulting in an effective internal referencing which improves the sensitivity of the detection. The self-calibration, together with the unique optophysical properties of nanoparticles (NPs) have made the ratiometric fluorescent nanoprobes more sensitive and reliable, which in turn, can result in more precise visual detection of the analytes. Over the past few years, a vast number of ratiometric sensing probes using nanostructured fluorophores have been designed and reported for a wide variety of sensing, imaging, and biomedical applications. In this work, a review on the NP-based ratiometric fluorescent sensors has been presented to meticulously elucidate their development, advances and challenges. With a special emphasis on visual detection, the most important steps in the design of fluorescent ratiometric nanoprobes have been given and based on different classes of analytes, recent applications of fluorescent ratiometric nanoprobes have been summarized. The challenges for the future use of the technique investigated in this review have been also discussed.

Abstract
A series of novel well-defined 8-hydroxyquinoline (HQ)-containing thermoresponsive amphiphilic diblock copolymers {poly(styrene- co-5-(2-methacryloylethyloxy-methyl)-8-quinolinol)- b-poly( N-isopropylacrylamide) P(St- co-MQ)- b-PNIPAm (P1,2), P(NIPAm- co-MQ)- b-PSt (P3,4)} and triblock copolymer poly( N-isopropylacrylamide)- b-poly(methyl-methacrylate- co-5-(2-methacryloylethyloxymethyl)-8-quinolinol)- b-polystyrene PNIPAm- b-P(MMA- co-MQ)- b-PSt (P5) were prepared by reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization, and their self-assembly behaviors were studied. Block copolymer P1-P5-stabilized gold nanoparticles (Au@P1-Au@P5) with a small size and a narrow distribution were obtained through the in situ reduction of gold precursors in an aqueous solution of polymer micelles with HQ as the coordination groups. The resulting Au@P nanohybrids possessed excellent catalytic activity for the reduction of nitrophenols using NaBH4. The size, morphology, and surface chemistry of Au NPs could be controlled by adjusting the structure of block polymers with HQ in different block positions, which plays an important role in the catalytic properties. It was found that longer chain lengths of hydrophilic or hydrophobic segments of block copolymers were beneficial to elevating the catalytic activity of Au NPs for the reduction of nitrophenols, and the spherical nanoparticles (Au@P5) stabilized with triblock copolymers exhibit higher catalytic performance. Surprisingly, the gold nanowires (Au@P4) produced with P4 have the highest catalytic activity due to a large abundance of grain boundaries. Excellent thermoresponsive behavior for catalytic reaction makes the as-prepared Au@P hybrids an environmentally responsive nanocatalytic material.

Multichannel Discriminative Detection of Explosive Vapors with an Array of Nanofibrous Membranes Loaded with Quantum Dots. SENSORS 2017; 17:s17112676. Abstract
The multichannel fluorescent sensor array based on nanofibrous membranes loaded with ZnS quantum dots (QDs) was created and demonstrated for the discriminative detection of explosives. The synergistic effect of the high surface-to-volume ratio of QDs, the good permeability of nanofibrous membranes and the differential response introduced by surface ligands was played by constructing the sensing array using nanofibrous membranes loaded with ZnS QDs featuring several surface ligands. Interestingly, although the fluorescence quenching of the nanofibrous membranes is not linearly related to the exposure time, the fingerprint of each explosive at different times is very similar in shape, and the fingerprints of the three explosives show different shapes. Three saturated vapors of nitroaromatic explosives could be reliably detected and discriminated by the array at room temperature. This work is the first step toward devising a monitoring system for explosives in the field of public security and defense. It could, for example, be coupled with the technology of image recognition and large data analysis for a rapid diagnostic test of explosives. This work further highlights the power of differential, multichannel arrays for the rapid and discriminative detection of a wide range of chemicals.

Abstract
Ratiometric fluorescent sensors, which can provide built-in self-calibration for correction of a variety of analyte-independent factors, have attracted particular attention for analytical sensing and optical imaging with the potential to provide a precise and quantitative analysis. A wide variety of ratiometric sensing probes using small fluorescent molecules have been developed. Compared with organic dyes, exploiting semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) in ratiometric fluorescence sensing is even more intriguing, owing to their unique optical and photophysical properties that offer significant advantages over organic dyes. In this review, the main photophysical mechanism for generating dual-emission from QDs for ratiometry is discussed and categorized in detail. Typically, dual-emission can be obtained either with energy transfer from QDs to dyes or with independent dual fluorophores of QDs and dye/QDs. The recent discovery of intrinsic dual-emission from Mn-doped QDs offers new opportunities for ratiometric sensing. Particularly, the signal transduction of QDs is not restricted to fluorescence, and electrochemiluminescence and photoelectrochemistry from QDs are also promising for sensing, which can be made ratiometric for correction of interferences typically encountered in electrochemistry. All these unique photophysical properties of QDs lead to a new avenue of ratiometry, and the recent progress in this area is addressed and summarized here. Several interesting applications of QD-based ratiometry are presented for the determination of metal ions, temperature, and biomolecules, with specific emphasis on the design principles and photophysical mechanisms of these probes.

Abstract
This work reports the development of highly fluorescent materials for the selective and efficient detection of picric acid explosive in the nanomolar range by fluorescence quenching phenomenon. Poly(vinyl alcohol) grafted polyaniline (PPA) and its nanocomposites with 2-mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA)-capped CdTe quantum dots (PPA-Q) and with MSA-capped CdTe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots (PPA-CSQ) are synthesized in a single step free radical polymerization reaction. The thermal stability and photo stability of the polymer increases in the order of PPA < PPA-Q < PPA-CSQ. The polymers show remarkably high selectivity and efficient sensitivity toward picric acid, and the quenching efficiency for PPA-CSQ reaches up to 99%. The detection limits of PPA, PPA-Q, and PPA-CSQ for picric acid are found to be 23, 1.6, and 0.65 nM, respectively, which are remarkably low. The mechanism operating in the quenching phenomenon is proposed to be a combination of a strong inner filter effect and ground state electrostatic interaction between the polymers and picric acid. A portable and cost-effective electronic device for the visual detection of picric acid by the sensory system is successfully fabricated. The device is further employed for quantitative detection of picric acid in real water samples.

Abstract
Zinc sulfide (ZnS)–poly (arylene ether ketone) (PAEK) nanocomposites (NCs) were synthesized in dimethylformamide solution by carboxylic-functionalized hyperbranched PAEK (ACA-HPAEK) as surface modifier without ligand exchange. The changes in the photoluminescence (PL) of ZnS-PAEK NCs with different reaction times, zinc ion (Zn2+)/thiourea ratios, and ZnS/ACA-HPAEK ratios were investigated, aiming at producing the novel NC with distinct luminescence properties. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and high-resolution analytical transmission electron microscopy were used to confirm the formation of ZnS quantum dots with small particle size. Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy and PL spectroscopy were used to characterize the luminescence properties of NCs. The results of differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis showed that the NCs exhibited excellent heat resistance. At last, the novel ZnS-PAEK NCs with distinct luminescence properties and excellent heat resistance were obtained.
