Abstract
Atomic oxygen radical anion (O⋅-) represents an important type of reactive centre that exists in both chemical and biological systems. Gas-phase atomic clusters can be studied under isolated and well controlled conditions. Studies of O⋅--containing clusters in the gas-phase provide a unique strategy to interpret the chemistry of O⋅- radicals at a strictly molecular level. This review summarizes the research progresses made since 2013 for the reactivity of O⋅- radicals in the atomically precise metal oxide clusters including negatively charged, nanosized, and neutral heteronuclear metal clusters benefitting from the development of advanced experimental techniques. New electronic and geometric factors to control the reactivity and product selectivity of O⋅- radicals under dark and photo-irradiation conditions have been revealed. The detailed mechanisms of O⋅- generation have been discussed for the reaction systems of nanosized and heteroatom-doped metal oxide clusters. The catalytic reactions mediated by the O⋅- radicals in metal clusters have also been successfully established and the microscopic mechanisms about the dynamic generation and depletion of O⋅- radicals have been clearly understood. The studies of O⋅- containing metal oxide clusters in the gas-phase provided new insights into the chemistry of reactive oxygen species in related condensed-phase systems.

Abstract
Propene oxidation is one of the important reactions that occurs in the presence of a three-way catalyst but its reaction mechanism is unclear. The reaction mechanisms and differences in catalysis between Pd and Rh particles were investigated by DFT calculations employing Pd55 and Rh55 as the model catalysts. The O-attack mechanism, in which the O atom adsorbed on the Pd55 and Rh55 surfaces attacks the C[double bond, length as m-dash]C double bond of propene, needs to overcome a large activation barrier (Ea). On the other hand, C-H bond cleavage of the methyl group of propene easily occurs with moderate Ea; the mechanism initiated by this C-H activation is named H-transfer mechanism. In this mechanism, the next step is allyl alcohol formation, followed by the second C-H bond activation of the CH2OH species of allyl alcohol, and the final step is proton transfer from OH-substituted π-allyl species to the OH group on the metal surface to yield acrolein and water molecules with the regeneration of M55. The rate-determining step is the second C-H bond activation. Its Ea is 17.4 kcal mol-1 for the reaction on Pd55 and 34.4 kcal mol-1 for the reaction on Rh55. These results indicate that Pd particles are more active than Rh particles in propene oxidation, which agrees with the experimental findings. The larger Ea for Rh55 than that for Pd55 arises from the stronger Rh-OH bond than the Pd-OH bond. The higher energy d-valence band-top of Rh55 than that of Pd55 is the origin of the stronger Rh-OH bond than the Pd-OH bond. Thus, the d-valence band-top energy is an important property for understanding and designing catalysts for alkene oxidation.

Abstract
The mass-selected copper oxide cluster cations Cu2O2+ are successfully prepared by laser ablation and reacted with benzene in a linear ion trap reactor. The cluster reaction is characterized by reflectron mass spectrometry in conjunction with density functional theory calculations. Four types of reaction channels are observed: (1) Cu2OH+ + C6H5O˙, (2) Cu2C6H6+ + O2, (3) Cu(C6H6)2+ + Cu and (4) Cu2O2C6H6+, in which the first one is the major product. Observation of the products Cu2OH+ indicates that oxygen atom transfer (OAT) accompanying hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) occurs, and the oxygen-centered radical (O-˙) in Cu2O2+ is crucial to the cleavages of C-H and Cu-O bonds. It is interesting that HAT and OAT occur in a single reaction channel to form C6H5O˙, which has not been reported in the reactions of gas-phase ions with benzene. The calculated results are in agreement with the experimental observations, and no two-state reactivity scenario is present in the potential energy surface of channel 1. This work can provide useful insights into the nature of active sites over copper oxides and reaction mechanisms in the corresponding heterogeneous reactions.

Abstract
Detailed knowledge of the electronic structure of vanadium oxide clusters provides the basis for understanding and tuning their significant catalytic properties. However, already for the simple four-atom V2 O2 molecule, there are contradictory reports in the literature regarding the electronic ground state and a possible vanadium-vanadium bond. We herein show through a combination of experimental (matrix isolation) studies and theoretical results that there is a multiple vanadium-vanadium bond in this benchmark vanadium oxide molecule.

Abstract
Lignin is the largest source of renewable material with an aromatic skeleton. However, due to the recalcitrant and heterogeneous nature of the lignin polymer, it has been a challenge to effectively depolymerize lignin and produce high-value chemicals with high selectivity. In this study, a highly efficient lignin-to-monomeric phenolic compounds (MPC) conversion method based on peracetic acid (PAA) treatment was reported. PAA treatment of two biorefinery lignin samples, diluted acid pretreated corn stover lignin (DACSL) and steam exploded spruce lignin (SESPL), led to complete solubilization and production of selective hydroxylated monomeric phenolic compounds (MPC-H) and monomeric phenolic acid compounds (MPC-A) including 4-hydroxy-2-methoxyphenol, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, vanillic acid, syringic acid, and 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid. The maximized MPC yields obtained were 18 and 22 % based on the initial weight of the lignin in SESPL and DACSL, respectively. However, we found that the addition of niobium pentoxide catalyst to PAA treatment of lignin can significantly improve the MPC yields up to 47 %. The key reaction steps and main mechanisms involved in this new lignin-to-MPC valorization pathway were investigated and elucidated.

Abstract
Interaction of small gas-phase molecules (NO, N2O, O2, CO) with VO2 radicals inside the channels of a dealuminated SiBEA zeolite was investigated by means of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), infrared (IR), and mass (QMS) spectroscopies to provide direct insights into the chemistry of a unique paramagnetic state of vanadium - VO2 molecules. A facile way of forming VO2 inside the channels of SiBEA via thermal reduction of VO2(+) precursor cations was shown. Dioxovanadium(IV) was identified based on its unusual EPR signal which, as compared with the typical monooxovanadium(IV) (VO(2+) cation), is featured by rhombic symmetry and a positive Aiso value leading to a hyperfine splitting as large as 32 mT. VO2 molecules exhibit reducing properties transforming N2O and O2 into vanadium intrachannel cage adducts comprising of reactive oxygen species (O(-) and O2(-), respectively). Interaction with CO led to its oxidation to CO2, while paramagnetic NO acted as a scavenger for VO2 radicals producing diamagnetic adducts. The observed reactivity was rationalized in terms of spin-pairing, electron transfer, and oxygen transfer processes. As a result new chemical pathways of vanadium reactivity were demonstrated which were not observed so far either in the homogeneous molecular systems or supported vanadium materials.

Abstract
The reactions between methane and niobium oxide cluster cations were studied and compared to those employing vanadium oxides. Hydrogen atom abstraction (HAA) reactions were identified over stoichiometric (Nb2O5)N(+) clusters for N as large as 14 with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The reactivity of (Nb2O5)N(+) clusters decreases as the N increases, and it is higher than that of (V 2O5)N(+) for N ≥ 4. Theoretical studies were conducted on (Nb2O5)N(+) (N = 2-6) by density functional calculations. HAA reactions on these clusters are all favorable thermodynamically and kinetically. The difference of the reactivity with respect to the cluster size and metal type (Nb vs V) was attributed to thermodynamics, kinetics, the electron capture ability, and the distribution of the unpaired spin density. Nanosized Nb oxide clusters show higher HAA reactivity than V oxides, indicating that niobia may serve as promising catalysts for practical methane conversion.
