Abstract
To unravel the role of driving force and structural changes in directing the photoinduced pathways in donor-bridge-acceptor (DBA) systems, we compared the ultrafast dynamics in novel DBAs which share a phenothiazine (PTZ) electron donor and a Pt(ii) trans-acetylide bridge (-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-Pt-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-), but bear different acceptors conjugated into the bridge (naphthalene-diimide, NDI; or naphthalene-monoimide, NAP). The excited state dynamics were elucidated by transient absorption, time-resolved infrared (TRIR, directly following electron density changes on the bridge/acceptor), and broadband fluorescence-upconversion (FLUP, directly following sub-picosecond intersystem crossing) spectroscopies, supported by TDDFT calculations. Direct conjugation of a strong acceptor into the bridge leads to switching of the lowest excited state from the intraligand 3IL state to the desired charge-separated 3CSS state. We observe two surprising effects of an increased strength of the acceptor in NDI vs. NAP: a ca. 70-fold slow-down of the 3CSS formation-(971 ps)-1vs. (14 ps)-1, and a longer lifetime of the 3CSS (5.9 vs. 1 ns); these are attributed to differences in the driving force ΔGet, and to distance dependence. The 100-fold increase in the rate of intersystem crossing-to sub-500 fs-by the stronger acceptor highlights the role of delocalisation across the heavy-atom containing bridge in this process. The close proximity of several excited states allows one to control the yield of 3CSS from ∼100% to 0% by solvent polarity. The new DBAs offer a versatile platform for investigating the role of bridge vibrations as a tool to control excited state dynamics.

Abstract
The naphthalenediimide (NDI) scaffold in contrast to its higher congeners possess low-fluorescence. In spite of elegant synthetic developments, a highly emissive NDI is quite rare to find, as well as, a green-light-emitting NDI is yet to be explored. Herein, we report a novel class of symmetric and asymmetric NH2 -substituted core-NDIs (1-5) with tunable fluorescence in the visible region and extending to the NIR frontier. Importantly, the bis-NH2 -substituted NDI 2 revealed quantum yield, Φ f of ≈81 and ≈68 % in toluene and DMSO, respectively, suggesting versatility of the fluorophore in a wide range of solvent polarity. The dye 1 is shown to be the first NDI-based green-light emitter. The donor piperidine group in 5 diminish the Φ f by 40-fold providing a lever to modulate the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process. Our synthetic protocol applies a Pd catalyst and a benign hydride source simplifying the non-trivial -NH2 group integration at the NDI-core. TD-DFT calculations predicted strong intramolecular hydrogen bonds in the excited state in the bulk nonpolar medium and responsiveness to solvent polarity. The maximization of the NDI emission outlined here would further boost the burgeoning repertoire of applications of the NDI scaffold.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of high-valent molybdenum(VI) bis-imido complexes 1-4 with dipyrromethene (DPM) supporting ligands of the general formula (DPMR)Mo(NR')2Cl (R, R' = mesityl (Mes) or tert-butyl (tBu)). The electrochemical and chemical properties of 1-4 reveal unexpected ligand noninnocence and reactivity. 15N NMR spectroscopy is used to assess the electronic properties of the imido ligands in the tert-butyl complexes 1 and 3. Complex 1 is inert toward ligand (halide) exchange with bulky phenolates such as KOMes or amides (e.g., KN(SiMe3)2), whereas the use of the lithium alkyl LiCH2SiMe3 results in a rare nucleophilic β-alkylation of the DPM ligand. While the reductions of the complexes occur at molybdenum, the oxidation is centered at the DPM ligand. Quantum-chemical calculations (complete active space self-consistent field, density functional theory) suggest facile (near-infrared) interligand charge transfer to the imido ligand, which might preclude the isolation of the oxidized complex [1]+ in the experiment.

Abstract
The triplet pair is the key functional unit in triplet-triplet annihilation photon upconversion. The same molecular properties that stabilize the triplet pair also allow dimers to form on the singlet energy surface, creating an unwanted energy relaxation pathway. Here we show that excimer formation most likely is a consequence of a triplet dimer formed before the annihilation event. Polarity-dependent studies were performed to elucidate how to promote wanted emission pathways over excimer formation. Furthermore, we show that the yield of triplet-triplet annihilation is increased in higher-viscosity solvents. The results will bring new insights in how to increase the upconversion efficiency and how to avoid energy-loss channels.

Abstract
Borondipyrromethene (BDP) naphthalenediimide (NDI) triads (BDP-NDI) and diiodo-BDP derivative (DiiodoBDP-NDI)) were synthesized to study the Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) and its impact on the triplet state formation and dynamics. In these triads, diiodo-BDP and BDP are the energy donors and NDI is the energy acceptor. Nanosecond transient absorption spectra of triads indicated that triplet state is localized on NDI moiety, either by selective photoexcitation of the Diiodo-BDP or NDI unit. The intersystem crossing (ISC) is attributed to intramolecular heavy atom effect. The triplet state quantum yield was found to be 54% with a lifetime of 38 μs. However, no triplet state is observed for BDP-NDI system either by exciting BDP or NDI unit. Thus, we confirmed that charge recombination does not produce a triplet state. Interestingly, DiiodoBDP-NDI can be used as broadband excitable (500-620 nm) triplet photosensitizer, and high triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) upconversion quantum yield of ΦUC = 2.8% was observed with 9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)-anthracene (BPEA) as a triplet acceptor/emitter.

Abstract
Reversible electronic energy transfer (REET) may be instilled in bi-/multichromophoric molecule-based systems, following photoexcitation, upon judicious structural integration of matched chromophores. This leads to a new set of photophysical properties for the ensemble, which can be fully characterized by steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic methods. Herein, we take a comprehensive look at progress in the development of this type of supermolecule in the last five years, which has seen systems evolve from covalently tethered dyads to synthetic molecular machines, exemplified by two different pseudorotaxanes. Indeed, REET holds promise in the control of movement in molecular machines, their assembly/disassembly, as well as in charge separation.
