Strong Direct Magnetic Coupling in a Dinuclear Co(II) Tetrazine Radical Single-Molecule Magnet

A Theoretical Account of the Coupling between Metal- and Ligand-centred Spins

This study addresses the magnetic interaction between paramagnetic metal ions and the radical ligands taking the [Cu^II (hfac)₂ (imVDZ)] and [M^II (hfac)₂ (pyDTDA)] (imVDZ=1,5-dimethyl-3-(1-methyl-2-imidazolyl)-6-oxoverdazyl; hfac=(1,1,1,5,5,5)hexafluroacetylacetonate; pyDTDA=4-(2'-pyridyl)-1,2,3,5-dithiadiazolyl), (M=Cu, Ni, Co, Fe, Mn) compounds as reference systems. The coupling between the metal and ligand spins is quantified in terms of the exchange coupling constant (J) in the platform of density functional theory (DFT) and the wave function-based complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) method. Application of DFT and broken symmetry (BS) formalism results ferromagnetic coupling for all the transition metal complexes except the Mn(II) complex. This DFT-BS prediction of magnetic nature matches with the experimental finding for all the complexes other than the Fe(II)-pyDTDA complex, for which an antiferromagnetic coupling between high spin iron and the thiazyl ligand has been reported. However, evaluation of spin state energetics through the multiconfigurational wave function-based method produces the S=3/2 ground spin state for the iron-thiazyl in parity with experiment. Electronic structure analyses find the overlap between the metal- and ligand-based singly occupied molecular orbitals (SOMOs) to be one of the major reasons attributing to different extent of exchange coupling in the systems under investigation.

Self-assembly of Ni(II) metallacycles (a square and a triangle) supported by tetrazine radical bridges

Two Ni(II) molecular metallacycles of [Ni₄(bpz*tz˙^-)₄(N₃)₄] (1) and [Ni₃(bpz^Phtz˙^-)₃(pz^Ph(Cl)tz˙^-)₃]·1.3CH₃OH·9.3H₂O (2) (bpz*tz = 3,6-bis(3,5-dimethyl-pyrazolyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine; bpz^Phtz = 3,6-bis(3-phenyl-pyrazolyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine; and pz^Ph(Cl)tz = 3-bis(3-phenyl-pyrazolyl)-6-Cl-1,2,4,5-tetrazine) are reported. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction study reveals that 1 displays a square structure while 2 shows a triangle structure due to the steric effect, both bearing tetrazine radical bridges. Furthermore, magnetic studies reveal that the Ni-radical interaction in 1 is strongly ferromagnetic with a coupling constant (J) of 90.8 cm^-1 in the 2J formalist, while the overall antiferromagnetic behaviour of 2 is presumably due to the compete ferromagnetic (for the Ni-radical_bridging interaction with J₁ = 95.4 cm^-1) and antiferromagnetic (for the Ni-radical_terminal interaction, J₂ = -57.5 cm^-1) couplings.

A Dicobalt(II) Single-Molecule Magnet via a Well-Designed Dual-Capping Tetrazine Radical Ligand

The recent years have witnessed the glory development for the construction of high-performance mononuclear single molecule magnets (SMMs) within a specific coordination geometry, which, however, is not well applied in cluster-based SMMs due to the synthetic challenges. Given that the monocobalt(II) complexes within a trigonal-prismatic (TPR) coordination geometry have been classified as excellent SMMs with huge axial anisotropy (D ≈ -100 cm^-1), here we designed and synthesized a new dual-capping tetrazine ligand, 3,6-bis(6-(di(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)methyl)pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine (bpptz), and prepared a novel dicobalt(II) complex, [Cp₂Co^III][{(hfac)Co^II}₂(bpptz^•-)][hfac]₂·2Et₂O (1, hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate). In the structure of 1, the bpptz^•- radical ligand enwraps two Co(II) centers within quasi-TPR geometries, which are further bridged by the tetrazine radical in the trans mode. The magnetic study revealed that the interaction between the Co centers and the tetrazine radical is strongly antiferromagnetic with a coupling constant (J) of -65.8 cm^-1 (in the -2J formalism). Remarkably, 1 exhibited the typical SMM behavior with an effective energy barrier of 69 cm^-1 under a 1.5 kOe dc field, among the largest for polynuclear transition metal SMMs. In addition, DFT and ab initio calculations suggested that the presence of a strong Co(II)-radical magnetic interaction effectively quenches the QTM effect and enhances the barrier height for the magnetization reversal.

Valence tautomeric transformation in the [CrCo] compound: exploration of cooperative interactions

A crystal containing the heterometallic Cr-ligand-Co cluster with an unpaired electron on the ligand as a structural unit is examined. The developed model which describes the magnetic and polarizability characteristics of this crystal takes into account that the electron residing on the ligand can be transferred to the Co-ion, thus converting the diamagnetic ls-Co^III ion into the paramagnetic hs-Co^II one. Since this transformation is accompanied by electron density redistribution and elongation of the Co-N bond lengths, the vibronic interaction of the Co-ion with totally symmetric displacements of the nearest surroundings and cooperative dipole-dipole and electron-deformational interactions are accounted for as well. The exchange interactions between the Cr^III ion and the electron localized on the ligand as well as in the Cr^III-hs-Co^II pair are also included in consideration; the parameters of these interactions are estimated within the framework of the DFT method. Bistability in the magnetic and polarization characteristics is predicted for certain strengths of intra- and intercluster interactions in the crystal under study. Within the framework of the developed approach an explanation of the observed magnetic properties of the [Cr(SS-cth)(Co(RR-cth)(μ-dhbq))](PF₆)₂Cl crystal is given.

Molecular and Electronic Structures and Single-Molecule Magnet Behavior of Tris(thioether)-Iron Complexes Containing Redox-Active α-Diimine Ligands

Incorporating radical ligands into metal complexes is one of the emerging trends in the design of single-molecule magnets (SMMs). While significant effort has been expended to generate multinuclear transition metal-based SMMs with bridging radical ligands, less attention has been paid to mononuclear transition metal-radical SMMs. Herein, we describe the first α-diiminato radical-containing mononuclear transition metal SMM, namely, [κ²-PhTt^tBu]Fe(AdNCHCHNAd) (1), and its analogue [κ²-PhTt^tBu]Fe(CyNCHCHNCy) (2) (PhTt^tBu = phenyltris(tert-butylthiomethyl)borate, Ad = adamantyl, and Cy = cyclohexyl). 1 and 2 feature nearly identical geometric and electronic structures, as shown by X-ray crystallography and electronic absorption spectroscopy. A more detailed description of the electronic structure of 1 was obtained through EPR and Mössbauer spectroscopies, SQUID magnetometry, and DFT, TD-DFT, and CAS calculations. 1 and 2 are best described as high-spin iron(II) complexes with antiferromagnetically coupled α-diiminato radical ligands. A strong magnetic exchange coupling between the iron(II) ion and the ligand radical was confirmed in 1, with an estimated coupling constant J < -250 cm^-1 (J = -657 cm^-1, DFT). Calibrated CAS calculations revealed that the ground-state Fe(II)-α-diiminato radical configuration has significant ionic contributions, which are weighted specifically toward the Fe(I)-neutral α-diimine species. Experimental data and theoretical calculations also suggest that 1 possesses an easy-axis anisotropy, with an axial zero-field splitting parameter D in the range from -4 to-1 cm^-1. Finally, dynamic magnetic studies show that 1 exhibits slow magnetic relaxation behavior with an energy barrier close to the theoretical maximum, 2|D|. These results demonstrate that incorporating strongly coupled α-diiminato radicals into mononuclear transition metal complexes can be an effective strategy to prepare SMMs.

Mono- and Binuclear Copper(II) and Nickel(II) Complexes with the 3,6-Bis(picolylamino)-1,2,4,5-Tetrazine Ligand

Four new compounds of formulas [Cu(hfac)₂(L)] (1), [Ni(hfac)₂(L)] (2), [{Cu(hfac)₂}₂(µ-L)]·2CH₃OH (3) and [{Ni(hfac)₂}₂(µ-L)]·2CH₃CN (4) [Hhfac = hexafluoroacetylacetone and L = 3,6-bis(picolylamino)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine] have been prepared and their structures determined by X-ray diffraction on single crystals. Compounds 1 and 2 are isostructural mononuclear complexes where the metal ions [copper(II) (1) and nickel(II) (2)] are six-coordinated in distorted octahedral MN₂O₄ surroundings which are built by two bidentate hfac ligands plus another bidentate L molecule. This last ligand coordinates to the metal ions through the nitrogen atoms of the picolylamine fragment. Compounds 3 and 4 are centrosymmetric homodinuclear compounds where two bidentate hfac units are the bidentate capping ligands at each metal center and a bis-bidentate L molecule acts as a bridge. The values of the intramolecular metal···metal separation are 7.97 (3) and 7.82 Å (4). Static (dc) magnetic susceptibility measurements were carried out for polycrystalline samples 1–4 in the temperature range 1.9–300 K. Curie law behaviors were observed for 1 and 2, the downturn of χ_MT in the low temperature region for 2 being due to the zero-field splitting of the nickel(II) ion. Very weak [J = −0.247(2) cm⁻¹] and relatively weak intramolecular antiferromagnetic interactions [J = −4.86(2) cm⁻¹] occurred in 3 and 4, respectively (the spin Hamiltonian being defined as H = −JS₁·S₂). Simple symmetry considerations about the overlap between the magnetic orbitals across the extended bis-bidentate L bridge in 3 and 4 account for their magnetic properties.

Strong Coupling and Slow Relaxation of the Magnetization for an Air-Stable [Co4] Square with Both Tetrazine Radicals and Azido Bridges

Introducing both tetrazine radical and azido bridges afforded two air-stable square complexes [M^II₄(bpztz^•-)₄(N₃)₄] (M^II = Zn²⁺, 1; Co²⁺, 2; bpztz = 3,6-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine), where the metal ions are cobridged by μ_1,1-azido bridges and tetrazine radicals. Magnetic studies revealed strong antiferromagnetic metal-radical interaction with a coupling constant of -64.7 cm^-1 in the 2J formalism in 2. Remarkably, 2 exhibits slow relaxation of magnetization with an effective barrier for spin reverse of 96 K at zero applied field.

Asymmetric Ring Opening in a Tetrazine-Based Ligand Affords a Tetranuclear Opto-Magnetic Ytterbium Complex

We report the formation of a tetranuclear lanthanide cluster, [Yb₄ (bpzch)₂ (fod)₁₀ ] (1), which occurs from a serendipitous ring opening of the functionalised tetrazine bridging ligand, bpztz (3,6-dipyrazin-2-yl-1,2,4,5-tetrazine) upon reacting with Yb(fod)₃ (fod^- =6,6,7,7,8,8,8-heptafluoro-2,2-dimethyl-3,5-octandionate). Compound 1 was structurally elucidated via single-crystal X-ray crystallography and subsequently magnetically and spectroscopically characterised to analyse its magnetisation dynamics and its luminescence behaviour. Computational studies validate the observed M_J energy levels attained by spectroscopy and provides a clearer picture of the slow relaxation of the magnetisation dynamics and relaxation pathways. These studies demonstrate that 1 acts as a single-molecule magnet (SMM) under an applied magnetic field in which the relaxation occurs via a combination of Raman, direct, and quantum tunnelling processes, a behaviour further rationalised analysing the luminescent properties. This marks the first lanthanide-containing molecule that forms by means of an asymmetric tetrazine decomposition.

Enhancing Magnetic Communication between Metal Centres: The Role of s-Tetrazine Based Radicals as Ligands

Although 1,2,4,5-tetrazines or s-tetrazines have been known in the literature for more than a century, their coordination chemistry has become increasingly popular in recent years due to their unique redox activity, multiple binding sites and their various applications. The electron-poor character of the ring and stabilization of the radical anion through all four nitrogen atoms in their metal complexes provide new aspects in molecular magnetism towards the synthesis of new high performing Single Molecule Magnets (SMMs). The scope of this review is to examine the role of s-tetrazine radical ligands in transition metal and lanthanide based SMMs and provide a critical overview of the progress thus far in this field. As well, general synthetic routes and new insights for the preparation of s-tetrazines are discussed, along with their redox activity and applications in various fields. Concluding remarks along with the limitations and perspectives of these ligands are discussed.

1,2,4,5-Tetrazine based ligands and complexes

One of the most intriguing nitrogen based aromatic heterocycles is 1,2,4,5-tetrazine or s-tetrazine (TTZ) thanks to its electron acceptor character and fluorescence properties and the possibilities of functionalization in the 3 and 6 positions allowing access to various ligands. In this review we focus on the two main families of TTZ based ligands, i.e. ditopic symmetric and monotopic non-symmetric, together with their metal complexes, with a special emphasis on their solid state structures and physical properties. After a description of the most representative complexes containing unsubstituted TTZ as a ligand, symmetric TTZ ligands and complexes derived thereof are discussed in the order: 3,6-bis(2-pyridyl)-tetrazine, 3,6-bis(3-pyridyl)-tetrazine, 3,6-bis(4-pyridyl)-tetrazine, 3,6-bis(2-pyrimidyl)-tetrazine, 3,6-bis(2-pyrazinyl)-tetrazine, 3,6-bis(monopicolylamine)-tetrazine, 3,6-bis(vanillin-hydrazinyl)-tetrazine and TTZ containing carboxylic acids. Remarkable results have been obtained in recent years for metal-organic frameworks and magnetic compounds in which magnetic coupling is enhanced when the tetrazine bridge is reduced to radical anions. Non-symmetric ligands, such as dipicolylamine-TTZ and monopicolylamine-TTZ, are comparatively more recent than the symmetric ones. They allow in principle the preparation of mononuclear complexes in a controlled manner, although binuclear complexes have been isolated as well. Moreover, in the monopicolylamine-TTZ-Cl ligand, deprotonation of the amine, thanks to the electron acceptor character of TTZ, afforded a negatively charged ligand equivalent of a guanidinate.

Single-ion anisotropy and exchange coupling in cobalt(ii)-radical complexes: insights from magnetic and ab initio studies

The concurrent effects of single-ion anisotropy and exchange interactions on the electronic structure and magnetization dynamics have been analyzed for a cobalt(ii)-semiquinonate complex. Analogs containing diamagnetic catecholate and tropolonate ligands were employed for comparison of the magnetic behavior and zinc congeners assisted with the spectroscopic characterization and assessment of intermolecular interactions in the cobalt(ii) compounds. Low temperature X-band (ν ≈ 9.4 GHz) and W-Band (ν ≈ 94 GHz) electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and static and dynamic magnetic measurements have been used to elucidate the electronic structure of the high spin cobalt(ii) ion in [Co(Me3tpa)(Br4cat)] (1; Me3tpa = tris[(6-methyl-2-pyridyl)methyl]amine, Br4cat2- = tetrabromocatecholate) and [Co(Me3tpa)(trop)](PF6) (2(PF6); trop- = tropolonate), which show slow relaxation of the magnetization in applied field. The cobalt(ii)-semiquinonate exchange interaction in [Co(Me3tpa)(dbsq)](PF6)·tol (3(PF6)·tol; dbsq- = 3,5-di-tert-butylsemiquinonate, tol = toluene) has been determined using an anisotropic exchange Hamiltonian in conjunction with multistate restricted active space self-consistent field ab initio modeling and wavefunction analysis, with comparison to magnetic and inelastic neutron scattering data. Our results demonstrate dominant ferromagnetic exchange for 3+ that is of similar magnitude to the anisotropy parameters of the cobalt(ii) ion and contains a significant contribution from spin-orbit coupling. The nature of the exchange coupling between octahedral high spin cobalt(ii) and semiquinonate ligands is a longstanding question; answering this question for the specific case of 3+ has confirmed the considerable sensitivity of the exchange to the molecular structure. The methodology employed will be generally applicable for elucidating exchange coupling between orbitally-degenerate metal ions and radical ligands and relevant to the development of bistable molecules and their integration into devices.

Synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of copper(ii) azide

A novel azide-bridged copper compound without an auxiliary ligand has been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal diffraction analysis. The compound consists of 1D double chains with end-on (EO) azide bridges. Furthermore, the neighboring chains are connected by weak coordination bonds, which leads to the formation of a 3D architecture. Low-temperature magnetic measurements reveal that antiferromagnetic interactions are dominant, with concomitant spin-canted antiferromagnetism.

Versatile coordination behaviour of the chloro-tetrazine-picolylamine ligand: mixed-valence binuclear Cu(i)/Cu(ii) complexes

The 3-Cl-6-amino-(2'-picolyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine ligand HL¹ has been synthesized and structurally characterized. Its versatile coordination behavior has been evidenced through reactions with Cu(Hfac)₂ and Cu(triflate)₂ precursors, which provided mixed-valence bimetallic Cu^1.5Cu^1.5 complexes [Cu₂(μ-Cl)(L¹)₂] 2 and [Cu₂(μ-triflate)(L¹)₂] 5. Changing the Cu(ii) precursor and the solvent leads to the formation of mononuclear octahedral Cu(ii) complexes [CuCl₂(HL¹)₂]·2CH₃CN 3 and [Cu(Hfac)₂(HL¹)] 4, in which only the amino-pyridine unit is involved in the coordination of the metal center. In contrast, in complexes 2 and 5, the ligands are deprotonated and bridge the metal centers as pyridine-amido-tetrazine fragments, while a bridging chloride or triflate ligand completes the coordination sphere of the metal ions. The Cu-Cu distances of 2.4313(4) Å in 2 and 2.5198(10) Å in 5 lie among the shorter values within mixed-valence bimetallic Cu complexes. Mixed-valence character is strongly supported by DFT calculations, showing the equal repartition of the unpaired electron between the two metal centers.

Magnetic on-off switching in redox non-innocent ligand bridged binuclear cobalt complexes

The redox non-innocent ligand 2,2'-bipyrimidine (bpym) reacted with two molar equivalents of LCo(tol) (L = CH(MeC[double bond, length as m-dash]NAr)₂, Ar = 2,6-iPr₂C₆H₃) to afford the binuclear Co^II complex (LCo)₂(μ-bpym) (1), in which the bpym moiety accepts two electrons from the metal centers and in the dianion state. Complex 1 readily underwent one-electron oxidation when treated with [Cp₂Fe]⁺[BPh₄]^- affording the cation salt [(LCo)₂(μ-bpym)][BPh₄] (2) with the bpym moiety in the radical anion state. Meanwhile, complex 2 could be converted back to 1 with elemental potassium. The magnetic studies revealed that complex 2 is a single molecular magnet (SMM) under a small external field, while 1 has no SMM activity. This represents a new example of a SMM exhibiting a fully reversible 'on/off' switching ability in anodic and neutral states.

Probing Magnetic-Exchange Coupling in Supramolecular Squares Based on Reducible Tetrazine-Derived Ligands

Reducible 3,6-bis(3,5-dimethyl-pyrazolyl)1,2,4,5-tetrazine was employed to isolate supramolecular air-stable [Co₄ ] and [Zn₄ ] squares, which were achieved via careful selection of counterions rather than the use of reducing agents. Magnetic susceptibility studies revealed a strong radical-Co^II exchange coupling (J_rad-Co /hc=-118 cm^-1 , -2J formalism) with a spin ground state of S_T =4, whereas the unreduced analogue revealed negligible coupling between the Co centers (J_Co-Co /hc=-0.64 cm^-1 ). Radical-radical coupling was also probed in the [Zn₄ ] congener, which led to J_rad-rad /hc=-15.9(5) cm^-1 . These results highlight the versatile air-stable coordination chemistry of tetrazine and the importance of exploiting easily reducible delocalized radical to promote strong exchange coupling between spin carriers.

Structural diversity and magnetic properties of six cobalt coordination polymers based on 2,2'-phosphinico-dibenzoate ligand

Six novel Co(ii) coordination polymers, namely, [Co₁₀L₆(OH)₂(H₂O)₉]·10.5H₂O (1), [Co₃L₂(3-abpt)₂]·4H₂O (2), [Co₃L₂(4-azpy)₂(H₂O)₂(EtOH)] (3), [Co₃L₂(4,4'-bipy)₂(H₂O)₂(MeCN)] (4), [Co₃L₂(4,4'-bipy)₂] (5), and [Co₅L₂(OH)₂(ina)₂(H₂O)₂] (6) (H₃L = 2,2'-phosphinico-dibenzoic acid, 3-abpt = 4-amino-3,5-bis(3-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazole, 4-azpy = 4,4'-azobispyridine, 4,4'-bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine, Hina = isonicotinic acid), have been hydrothermally synthesized and their magnetic properties have been characterized. The L^3- anion displays six types of coordination modes in the compounds. Compound 1 exhibits a novel 1D ladder-like structure, which consists of non-centrosymmetric Co₁₀ units. Compounds 2-4 comprise 2D networks assembled from Co₃L₂ chains and N-heterocyclic linkers. Compound 5 comprises a 3D framework built from six neighboring parallel Co₃L₂ ladders bridged by 4,4'-bipy linkers. Compound 6 features a 3D framework that exhibits pcu topology with the Schläfli symbol of (4¹²·6³) using a pentanuclear [Co₅(OH)₂]⁸⁺ cluster as the node. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility studies indicate that the six coordination polymers exhibit remarkable magnetic behavior such as spin-canted antiferromagnetism and spin glass, which were found to coexist in compound 6.

Strong Ferromagnetic Exchange Coupling Mediated by a Bridging Tetrazine Radical in a Dinuclear Nickel Complex

The radical bridged compound [(Ni(TPMA))₂-μ-bmtz^•-](BF₄)₃·3CH₃CN (bmtz = 3,6-bis(2'-pyrimidyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine, TPMA = tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine) exhibits strong ferromagnetic exchange between the S = 1 Ni^II centers and the bridging S = 1/2 bmtz radical with J = 96 ± 5 cm^-1 (-2J_Ni-radS_NiS_rad). DFT calculations support the existence of strong ferromagnetic exchange.

Putting a New Spin on Supramolecular Metallacycles: Co3 Triangle and Co4 Square Bearing Tetrazine-Based Radicals as Bridges

The synthesis of two new radical-bridged compounds [Co₃(bptz)₃(dbm)₃]·2toluene (1) and [Co₄(bptz)₄(dbm)₄]·4MeCN (2) (bptz = 3,6-bis(pyridyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine; dbm = 1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propanedionate) is reported. The presence of the ligand-centered radical has been confirmed by X-ray crystallography and SQUID magnetometry. These complexes are the first metallacycles bearing nitrogen heterocyclic radicals as bridges. Magnetic studies reveal strong antiferromagnetic metal···radical coupling with coupling constants of J = -67.5 and -66.8 cm^-1 for 1 and 2, respectively. DFT calculations further support the strong antiferromagnetic coupling between Co^II ions and bptz radicals and confirm S = 3 and S = 4 spin ground states for 1 and 2, respectively.

Strong ferromagnetic exchange coupling in a {Ni} cluster mediated through an air-stable tetrazine-based radical anion

A planar tetradentate 3,6-bis(2-pyrimidyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine (BpymTz) templating chelate affords the formation of an unprecedented BpymTz˙^- radical anion bridged {Ni} complex. Detailed magnetic measurements performed on the isolated air stable [Ni(BpymTz˙^-)Cl₆(DMF)₈]Cl·0.5(H₂O) compound reveal strong ferromagnetic Ni^II-BpymTz˙^- interactions with a coupling constant of J = 98.84 cm^-1.

Synthesis, Resolution, and Absolute Configuration of Chiral Tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine-Based Hemicryptophane Molecular Cages

The synthesis, characterization, and chiroptical properties of a new class of hemicryptophane cages combining a cyclotriveratrylene unit and a tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (TPA) moiety are reported. Changing the linkers between these two units allows for the modification of the size and shape of the cavity. The synthesis is straightforward and efficient, providing gram-scale of cage compounds. The racemic mixture of each hemicryptophane host can be readily resolved by chiral HPLC, giving an easy access to the enantiopure molecular cages of which absolute configurations have been assigned by ECD spectroscopy. These new hemicryptophanes are available chemical platforms ready to use for various purposes due to the versatile metal complexation properties of the TPA unit. A Zn(II)@hemicryptophane complex has been obtained and used as a heteroditopic host for the selective recognition of zwitterionic guests.

An air stable radical-bridged dysprosium single molecule magnet and its neutral counterpart: redox switching of magnetic relaxation dynamics

Synthesis, structure, magnetic and biological activity studies of bis-hydrazone derived Cu(ii) and Co(ii) coordination compounds

Four coordination compounds of formulae [Cu(II)2(H2L(1))(HL(1))](ClO4)3·H2O (1), [Cu(II)2(H2L(2))(CH3OH)2](ClO4)2·2CH3OH (2), [Co(II)2(H2L(1))2](ClO4)4 (3) and [Co(II)2(H2L(2))2]·2H2O (4) were synthesized via self-assembly of succinohydrazone derived ligands (H2L(1) = N',N'-4-bis(2-pyridyl)succinohydrazide, H4L(2) = N',N'-4-bis(2-hydroxybenzylidene)succinohydrazide) and Cu(2+) and Co(2+) ions, respectively. The compounds were characterized by crystal structure determination, magnetic measurements and biological activities. Compounds 1, 3 and 4 have discrete double helicate structures, whereas compound 2 is a one-dimensional chain. Magnetic studies show antiferromagnetic exchange interactions in 2 with a J value of -67.1 cm(-1) and antiferromagnetic spin-canting in compound 3 originates through supramolecular H-bonding. For compound 3, a clear bifurcation was observed in zero field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled (FC) measurement at a temperature of 3.5 K and field of 0.1 T, implying long range magnetic ordering below this temperature. Interestingly, all of compounds 1-4 show significant changes in their absorption (hypo- and hyperchromism) in the presence of SS-DNA, inferring interaction between the compounds and DNA. In addition, compounds 1-4 significantly exhibited nuclease activities on both RNA and pUC19 plasmid DNA. Moreover, the nuclease activity was further enhanced in the presence of oxidant (H2O2) and suggests the possible role of reactive oxygen species in DNA nicking ability of compounds 1-4. Furthermore, compounds 1, 2 and 4 exhibited significant cytotoxicity against mammalian cancer cell lines (HeLa, A549 and MDAMB-231). In addition, our results from Annexin/PI staining and DNA fragmentation assays revealed that these compounds are capable of inducing apoptosis and have potential to act as anticancer drugs.
