Nanotechnologies for environmental remediation and their ecotoxicological impacts

Environmental nanoremediation is an emerging technology that aims to rapidly and efficiently remove contaminants from the polluted sites using engineered nanomaterials (ENMs). Inorganic nanoparticles which are generally metallic, silica-based, carbon-based, or polymeric in nature serve to remediate through chemical reactions, filtration, or adsorption. Their greater surface area per unit mass and high reactivity enable them to treat groundwater, wastewater, oilfields, and toxic industrial contaminants. Despite the growing interest in nanotechnological solutions for bioremediation, the environmental and human hazard associated with their use is raising concerns globally. Nanoremediation techniques when compared to conventional remediation solutions show increased effectivity in terms of cost and time; however, the main challenge is the ability of ENMs to remove contaminants from different environmental mediums by safeguarding the ecosystem. ENMs improving the accretion of the pollutant and increasing their bioavailability should be rectified along with the vigilant management of their transfer to the upper levels of the food chain which subsequently causes biomagnification. The ecosystem-centered approach will help monitor the ecotoxicological impacts of nanoremediation considering the safety, sustainability, and proper disposal of ENMs. The environment and human health risk assessment of each novel engineered nanomaterial along with the regulation of life cycle assessment (LCA) tools of ENMs for nanoremediation can help investigate the possible environmental hazard. This review focuses on the currently available nanotechnological methods used for environmental remediation and their potential toxicological impacts on the ecosystem.

Environmental occurrence, toxicity and remediation of perchlorate - A review

Perchlorate (ClO4-) comes under the class of contaminants called the emerging contaminants that will impact environment in the near future. A strong oxidizer by nature, perchlorate has received significant observation due to its occurrence, reactive nature, and persistence in varied environments such as surface water, groundwater, soil, and food. Perchlorate finds its use in number of industrial products ranging from missile fuel, fertilizers, and fireworks. Perchlorate exposure occurs when naturally occurring or manmade perchlorate in water or food is ingested. Perchlorate ingestion affects iodide absorption into the thyroid, thereby causing a decrease in the synthesis of thyroid hormone, a very crucial component needed for metabolism, neural development, and a number of other physiological functions in the body. Perchlorate remediation from ground water and drinking water is carried out through a series of physical-chemical techniques like ion (particle) transfer and reverse osmosis. However, the generation of waste through these processes are difficult to manage, so the need for alternative treatment methods occur. This review talks about the hybrid technologies that are currently researched and gaining momentum in the treatment of emerging contaminants, namely perchlorate.

Simultaneous remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and heavy metals in wastewater with zerovalent iron-titanium oxide nanoparticles (ZVI-TiO2)

The presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals (HM) in wastewater is a major challenge to the environment as various approaches have been used to remediate these contaminants from the environment. Zerovalent iron-titanium oxide nanoparticle (ZVI-TiO2 NPs) was synthesized by wet reflux in an inert environment using nitrogen gas and sodium borohydride as reducing agents. Characterization was carried out using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) coupled with electron diffraction X-ray (EDX) and Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer (FTIR). Assessments of the wastewater were carried out with atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS) for HM and a gas chromatography-mass spectrophotometer (GCMS) for PAHs to determine the initial concentration (C i) compared with permissible limits of surface water and adsorption capacity with ZVI-TiO2 NPs (C f), respectively. The results obtained indicate a percentage yield of 65.51 ± 0.01 of ZVI-TiO2 NPs, with a particle size of 100 nm, weight composition of iron, titanium, and oxygen at 49.69, 5.24, and 35.41 g, respectively. FTIR shows a vibrational change of 3465, 2929, and 1641 cm−1 of OH, CH, and CO group needed for metal binding and adsorption. Remediation of HM after acid digestion gave effective removal of zinc, copper, cadmium, cobalt, and lead at an adsorption capacity of 64.29, 54.83, 53.13, 48.39, and 42.66% respectively. The adsorptions of benzo[a]pyrene, fluoranthene, pyrene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, and perylene were 77.87, 67.85, 52.17, 29.50, and 25.45%, respectively. These results indicate that metal/metal oxide (ZVI-TiO2) nanoparticles have a high potential in the remediation of heavy metals and PAHs from the water ecosystem.

Recent advances in nanoremediation: Carving sustainable solution to clean-up polluted agriculture soils

Agriculture is one of the foremost significant human activities, which symbolizes the key source for food, fuel and fibers. This activity results in a lot of ecological harms particularly with the excessive usage of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Different agricultural practices have remained industrialized to advance food production, due to the growth in the world population and to meet the food demand through the routine use of more effective fertilizers and pesticides. Soil is intensely embellished by environmental contamination and it can be stated as "universal incline." Soil pollution usually occurs from sewage wastes, accidental discharges or as byproducts of chemical residues of unrestrained production of numerous materials. Soil pollution with hazardous materials alters the physical, chemical, and biological properties, causing undesirable changes in soil fertility and ecosystem. Engineered nanomaterials offer various solutions for remediation of contaminated soils. Engineered nanomaterial-enable technologies are able to prevent the uncontrolled release of harmful materials into the environment along with capabilities to combat soil and groundwater borne pollutants. Currently, nanobiotechnology signifies a hopeful attitude to advance agronomic production and remediate polluted soils. Studies have outlined the way of nanomaterial applications to restore the eminence of the environment and assist the detection of polluted sites, along with potential remedies. This review focuses on the latest developments in agricultural nanobiotechnology and the tools developed to combat soil or land and or terrestrial pollution, as well as the benefits of using these tools to increase soil fertility and reduce potential toxicity.

In-situ, Ex-situ, and nano-remediation strategies to treat polluted soil, water, and air - A review

Nanotechnology, as an emerging science, has taken over all fields of life including industries, health and medicine, environmental issues, agriculture, biotechnology etc. The use of nanostructure molecules has revolutionized all sectors. Environmental pollution is a great concern now a days, in all industrial and developing as well as some developed countries. A number of remedies are in practice to overcome this problem. The application of nanotechnology in the bioremediation of environmental pollutants is a step towards revolution. The use of various types of nanoparticles (TiO₂ based NPs, dendrimers, Fe based NPs, Silica and carbon nanomaterials, Graphene based NPs, nanotubes, polymers, micelles, nanomembranes etc.) is in practice to diminish environmental hazards. For this many In-situ (bioventing, bioslurping, biosparging, phytoremediation, permeable reactive barrier etc.) and Ex-situ (biopile, windrows, bioreactors, land farming etc.) methodologies are employed. Improved properties like nanoscale size, less time utilization, high adaptability for In-situ and Ex-situ use, undeniable degree of surface-region to-volume proportion for possible reactivity, and protection from ecological elements make nanoparticles ideal for natural applications. There are distinctive nanomaterials and nanotools accessible to treat the pollutants. Each of these methods and nanotools depends on the properties of foreign substances and the pollution site. The current designed review highlights the techniques used for bioremediation of environmental pollutants as well as use of various nanoparticles along with proposed In-situ and Ex-situ bioremediation techniques.

GD, Alexis F, Whitehead DC. Scaled Synthesis of Polyamine-Modified Cellulose Nanocrystals from Bulk Cotton and Their Use for Capturing Volatile Organic Compounds

We have previously demonstrated that cellulose nanocrystals modified with poly(ethylenimine) (PEI-f-CNC) are capable of capturing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) associated with malodors. In this manuscript, we describe our efforts to develop a scalable synthesis of these materials from bulk cotton. This work culminated in a reliable protocol for the synthesis of unmodified cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) from bulk cotton on a 0.5 kg scale. Additionally, we developed a protocol for the modification of the CNCs by means of sequential 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine 1-oxyl (TEMPO) oxidation and 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) coupling to modify their surface with poly(ethylenimine) on a 100 g scale. Subsequently, we evaluated the performance of the PEI-f-CNC materials that were prepared in a series of VOC capture experiments. First, we demonstrated their efficacy in capturing volatile fatty acids emitted at a rendering plant when formulated as packed-bed filter cartridges. Secondly, we evaluated the potential to use aqueous PEI-f-CNC suspensions as a spray-based delivery method for VOC remediation. In both cases, the PEI-f-CNC formulations reduced detectable malodor VOCs by greater than 90%. The facile scaled synthesis of these materials and their excellent performance at VOC remediation suggest that they may emerge as a useful strategy for the remediation of VOCs associated with odor.

Point-of-Care Test Paper for Exhaled Breath Aldehyde Analysis via Mass Spectrometry

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from exhaled breath (EB) are considered to be promising biomarkers for lung diseases. A convenient and sensitive point-of-care (POC) testing method for EB VOCs is essential. Here, we developed a POC test paper for the analysis of EB aldehydes, which are potential biomarkers for lung cancer. A probe molecule, 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP), was anchored on a paper substrate to specifically capture gas-phase aldehydes through the Schiff base reaction. Meanwhile, thin-film reaction acceleration was utilized to increase capture efficiency. By directly coupling the test paper to a mass spectrometer through paper spray, high sensitivity (0.1 ppt) and a wide quantification linear range (from 10 ppt to 1 ppm) were obtained. Analysis of EB from lung cancer patients with the test paper showed a significant increase in several reported aldehyde markers compared to EB from healthy volunteers, indicating the potential of this method for sensitive, low-cost, and convenient lung cancer screening and diagnosis.

Performance of a CO2 sorbent for indoor air cleaning applications: Effects of environmental conditions, sorbent aging, and adsorption of co-occurring formaldehyde

Indoor air cleaning systems that incorporate CO₂ sorbent materials enable HVAC load shifting and efficiency improvements. This study developed a bench-scale experimental system to evaluate the performance of a sorbent under controlled operation conditions. A thermostatic holder containing 3.15 g sorbent was connected to a manifold that delivered CO₂ -enriched air at a known temperature and relative humidity (RH). The air stream was also enriched with 0.8-2.1 ppm formaldehyde. The CO₂ concentration was monitored in real-time upstream and downstream of the sorbent, and integrated formaldehyde samples were collected at different times using DNPH-coated silica cartridges. Sorbent regeneration was carried out by circulating clean air in countercurrent. Almost 200 loading/regeneration cycles were performed in the span of 17 months, from which 104 were carried out at reference test conditions defined by loading with air at 25°C, 38% RH, and 1000 ppm CO₂ , and regenerating with air at 80°C, 3% RH and 400 ppm CO₂ . The working capacity decreased slightly from 43-44 mg CO₂ per g sorbent to 39-40 mg per g over the 17 months. The capacity increased with lower loading temperature (in the range 15-35°C) and higher regeneration temperature, between 40 and 80°C. The CO₂ capacity was not sensitive to the moisture content in the range 6-9 g/m³ , and decreased slightly when dry air was used. Loading isothermal breakthrough curves were fitted to three simple adsorption models, verifying that pseudo-first-order kinetics appropriately describes the adsorption process. The model predicted that equilibrium capacities decreased with increasing temperature from 15 to 35°C, while adsorption rate constants slightly increased. The formaldehyde adsorption efficiency was 80%-99% in different cycles, corresponding to an average capacity of 86 ± 36 µg/g. Formaldehyde was not quantitatively released during regeneration, but its accumulation on the sorbent did not affect CO₂ adsorption.

Periodic mesoporous organosilica nanomaterials for rapid capture of VOCs

Periodic mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles (PMO SiNPs) were developed for the targeted capture of specific volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The removal kinetics for adsorbing VOCs were fast and the maximum removal could be achieved within less than 30 min. PMO SiNPs removed >99% of VOCs at a low sorbent dose (i.e. >0.5 mL analyte per g PMO SiNPs). They also showed good recyclability and maintained reasonable removal efficiencies after five cycles (i.e. 77% and 65% for hexanal and butyric acid vapors, respectively).

Cellulose particles capture aldehyde VOC pollutants

Aldehydes are commonly encountered Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) released to the atmosphere from a variety of anthropogenic sources. Based on the increasing interest in developing sustainable and environmentally friendly materials for the decontamination of VOCs, cellulose particles have emerged as one possible candidate, but there is a lack of understanding of the physicochemical properties affecting the adsorption of VOCs, and the effect of the extraction source on these intrinsic features. The present study was focused on the evaluation of unmodified cellulose particles extracted from biodiverse sources in Ecuador as potential VOC decontaminants. Modifications of the natural fibers with polyethylenimine (PEI) coating were performed to enhance the adsorption effectiveness. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) measurements, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) methods were used to characterize the physicochemical properties of the isolates. Gas chromatography assays demonstrated that unmodified cellulose can adsorb an aldehyde VOC, hexanal, reaching up to a 56.42 ± 7.30% reduction. Electrostatic coating of the cellulose particles with small quantities of PEI enhanced the VOC remediation capacities (i.e. 98.12 ± 1.18%). Results demonstrated that the biodiverse plant source of the cellulose isolate can affect the gas capturing properties, and that these particles can be an environmentally friendly solution for effective adsorption of VOC pollutants.

Degradation of pesticides using amine-functionalized cellulose nanocrystals

A series of amine-functionalized cellulose nanocrystal materials were successfully synthesized, characterized, and evaluated for the remediation of pesticide contaminants from organic and aqueous media. Their ability to degrade malathion in organic systems has been examined, resulting in up to 100% degradation of the compound into detectable lower molecular weight by-products. A poly(ethylenimine) cellulose nanocrystal (CNC-PEI) material was also capable of degrading aqueous solutions of malathion, deltamethrin, and permethrin with 100%, 95%, and 78% degradation, respectively. Thus, these materials can potentially serve as a new and viable remediation technique based on their ability to effectively degrade various pesticides. The reusability of the CNC-PEI was also explored. The CNC-PEI material maintained its ability to degrade malathion throughout two wash and re-use cycles.

Poly(amine) modified kaolinite clay for VOC capture

Polyethylenimine (PEI) functionalized kaolinite clay was successfully prepared, characterized, and assessed for the remediation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) comprising the aldehyde, carboxylic acid, and disulfide functional group classes. A gas chromatographic vapor capture assay evaluated the capability of unmodified and modified clay material to capture representative aldehyde, carboxylic acid, and disulfide VOCs in a laboratory setting. Unmodified kaolinite (Kao) clay was moderately or poorly effective at remediating these VOCs, while the poly(amine) functionalized Kao was capable of capturing VOCs in the vapor phase with reductions up to 100%. Sample cartridge tubes were packed with PEI-functionalized clay in order to assess their ability to reduce the detectable volatile fatty acid load at an open-air rendering plant in a relevant field test for applying these materials in a packed-bed scrubber application. The PEI-Kao packed cartridges were capable of significantly reducing the detectable concentration of volatile fatty acid effluent from the rendering operation. These volatile fatty acids are major contributors to nuisance odors associated with rendering.

Nanotechnology for Environmental Remediation: Materials and Applications

Environmental remediation relies mainly on using various technologies (e.g., adsorption, absorption, chemical reactions, photocatalysis, and filtration) for the removal of contaminants from different environmental media (e.g., soil, water, and air). The enhanced properties and effectiveness of nanotechnology-based materials makes them particularly suitable for such processes given that they have a high surface area-to-volume ratio, which often results in higher reactivity. This review provides an overview of three main categories of nanomaterials (inorganic, carbon-based, and polymeric-based materials) used for environmental remediation. The use of these nanomaterials for the remediation of different environmental contaminants-such as heavy metals, dyes, chlorinated organic compounds, organophosphorus compounds, volatile organic compounds, and halogenated herbicides-is reviewed. Various recent examples are extensively highlighted focusing on the materials and their applications.

Tailoring Lipid and Polymeric Nanoparticles as siRNA Carriers towards the Blood-Brain Barrier - from Targeting to Safe Administration

Blood-brain barrier is a tightly packed layer of endothelial cells surrounding the brain that acts as the main obstacle for drugs enter the central nervous system (CNS), due to its unique features, as tight junctions and drug efflux systems. Therefore, since the incidence of CNS disorders is increasing worldwide, medical therapeutics need to be improved. Consequently, aiming to surpass blood-brain barrier and overcome CNS disabilities, silencing P-glycoprotein as a drug efflux transporter at brain endothelial cells through siRNA is considered a promising approach. For siRNA enzymatic protection and efficient delivery to its target, two different nanoparticles platforms, solid lipid (SLN) and poly-lactic-co-glycolic (PLGA) nanoparticles were used in this study. Polymeric PLGA nanoparticles were around 115 nm in size and had 50 % of siRNA association efficiency, while SLN presented 150 nm and association efficiency close to 52 %. Their surface was functionalized with a peptide-binding transferrin receptor, in a site-oriented manner confirmed by NMR, and their targeting ability against human brain endothelial cells was successfully demonstrated by fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry. The interaction of modified nanoparticles with brain endothelial cells increased 3-fold compared to non-modified lipid nanoparticles, and 4-fold compared to non-modified PLGA nanoparticles, respectively. These nanosystems, which were also demonstrated to be safe for human brain endothelial cells, without significant cytotoxicity, bring a new hopeful breath to the future of brain diseases therapies.
