Abstract
Sulfonamides are auspicious chemosensors which are capable to bind with ionic species through various ways like complexation, charge transfer, proton transfer etc. and produce a detection signal in the form of an optical change either in visible or UV-light and for electronic as well as fluorimetric spectra. Sulfonamides have gained much attention of analytical chemists these days as these are inexpensive, robust, green in nature and some what sensitive and selective to many anionic and cationic species. Due to their promising versatility in sensing properties, these are under great consideration in forensic, environmental, analytical and biochemistry laboratories. This review narrates how sulfonamides are being used to optically sense ionic species.

Abstract
A new class of alkynylplatinum(II) bzimpy (bzimpy = bis(benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine) double complex salts (DCSs) containing dialkoxynaphthalene or pyromellitic diimide moieties on the alkynyl ligand has been reported to display distinct morphological properties compared to their precursor alkynylplatinum(II) complexes, with the capability of being aligned by the directional Pt···Pt and/or π-π stacking interactions. The incorporation of donor and acceptor units on the alkynyl ligands has been found to significantly perturb the alignment of the oppositely charged complex ions in the DCSs to stack in a twisted head-to-head manner, attributed to the additional driving forces of electrostatic and donor-acceptor interactions. The modulation of the Pt···Pt distances and the extent of aggregate formation have been demonstrated by altering the charge matching between the platinum(II) bzimpy moieties and the donor or acceptor moieties on the alkynyl ligand.

Abstract
This study comprises the design and development of calix[4] arene-amido-based ionophores by varying structural stringency and steric hindrance at the lower rim to probe the anion sensing properties. The ionophores are prepared, purified, and characterized using various analytical techniques. The molecular structure of the most active ionophore I is established by single-crystal X-ray characterisation. Out of various anions investigated, iodide and cyanide show the highest sensitivity towards the ionophores investigated. Both anions are sensitive enough to give a visibly distinct color change. The binding properties of the ionophores are established with 1H & 127I NMR, fluorescence, and UV-vis spectroscopy, revealing that three ionophores strongly interact with CN- and I-. The binding constants are calculated via Benesi-Hildebrand plots using absorption data. The time-dependent 1H NMR revealed strong hydrogen bonding between the OH and NH groups of the ionophore and cyanide anion. The 127I NMR shows the highest 27.6 ppm shift after 6 h for ionophore I. The crystal structure revealed hydrogen bonding of N-H protons of the amide pendulum and phenolic oxygen of the calix rim. The Job's plot depicted the possibility of a 1 : 1 complex of ionophores with both anions.

Abstract
Lanthanide complexes have been developed and are reported herein. These complexes were derived from a terpyridine-functionalized calix[4]arene ligand, chelated with Tb3+ and Eu3+. Synthesis of these complexes was achieved in two steps from a calix[4]arene derivative: (1) amide coupling of a calix[4]arene bearing carboxylic acid functionalities and (2) metallation with a lanthanide triflate salt. The ligand and its complexes were characterized by NMR (1H and 13C), fluorescence and UV-vis spectroscopy as well as MS. The photophysical properties of these complexes were studied; high molar absorptivity values, modest quantum yields and luminescence lifetimes on the ms timescale were obtained. Anion binding results in a change in the photophysical properties of the complexes. The anion sensing ability of the Tb(III) complex was evaluated via visual detection, UV-vis and fluorescence studies. The sensor was found to be responsive towards a variety of anions, and large binding constants were obtained for the coordination of anions to the sensor.

Abstract
In this study, novel p-benzimidazole-derived calix[4]arene compounds with different structures, and a benzothiazole-derived calix[4]arene compound, were synthesized by a microwave-assisted method and their structures were determined by FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, MALDI-TOF mass spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The effects of functional calixarenes against bacterial (pBR322 plasmid DNA) and eukaryotic DNA (calf thymus DNA = CT-DNA) were investigated. The studies with plasmid DNA have shown that compounds 6 and 10 containing methyl and benzyl groups, respectively, have DNA cleavage activity at the highest concentrations (10 000 μM). Interactions with plasmid DNA using some restriction enzymes (BamHI and HindIII) were also investigated. The binding ability of p-substituted calix[4]arene compounds towards CT-DNA was examined using UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy and it was determined that some compounds showed efficiency. In particular, it was observed that the functional compounds (10 and 5) containing benzyl and chloro-groups had higher activity (K b binding constants were found to be 7.1 × 103 M-1 and 9.3 × 102 M-1 respectively) on DNA than other compounds. Competitive binding experiments using ethidium bromide also gave an idea about the binding properties. Docking studies of the synthesized compounds with DNA were performed to predict the binding modes, affinities and noncovalent interactions stabilizing the DNA-compound complexes at the molecular level. Docking results were in good agreement with the experimental findings on the DNA binding activities of compounds. Based on these results, this preliminary study could shed light on future experimental antibacterial and/or anticancer research.
