Abstract
Photothermal therapy has aroused great attention and showed promising potential in minimally invasive tumor ablation, but the clinical translation is still stifled by the concerns of unwanted injury to normal tissues. The safety concerns might be completely solved only when the two security obstacles of "material-toxicity" and "photo-toxicity" were overcome simultaneously. Herein, a completely non-toxic food-grade photothermal transduction agent (PTA) with double safety guarantees was invented, which shows an absolute transformation of the photothermal effect from "0" to "1" after being triggered by an acidic tumor microenvironment. Inspired by the classical starch-iodine test, a preprogrammed [starch-KI-KIO3] complex was prepared in large quantities through a modified wet-milling procedure. It's demonstrated that a macroscopic consecutive reaction could be triggered by low pH to produce the starch-iodine complex which can generate lethal temperature under the near-infrared light irradiation. Meanwhile, the PTA shows excellent biocompatibility with no "material-toxicity" owing to the raw materials drawn from our daily food. Animal experiments reveal that the tumor microenvironment can activate the switch of photothermal effect from "0" to "1" successfully, which is thus responsible for the discriminative photo-damage to the tumor region while no "photo-toxicity" to normal tissue. The good treatment efficacy confirms the feasibility of such photothermal transduction agents with double safety guarantees in clinical applications.

Abstract
Microheaters are used in several applications, including medical diagnostics, synthesis, environmental monitoring, and actuation. Conventional microheaters rely on thin-film electrodes microfabricated in a clean-room environment. However, low-cost alternatives based on conductive paste electrodes fabricated using printing techniques have started to emerge over the years. Here, we report a surprising effect that leads to significant electrode performance improvement as confirmed by the thorough characterization of bulk, processed, and conditioned samples. Mixing silver ink and PVA results in the solubilization of performance-hindering organic compounds. These compounds evaporate during heating cycles. The new electrodes, which reach a temperature of 80 °C within 5 min using a current of 7.0 A, display an overall 42% and 35% improvement in the mechanical (hardness) and electrical (resistivity) properties compared to pristine silver ink electrodes. To validate our results, we use the composite heater to amplify and detect parasite DNA from Trypanosoma brucei, associated with African sleeping sickness. Our LAMP test compares well with commercially available systems, confirming the excellent performance of our nanocomposite heaters. Since their fabrication relies on well-established techniques, we anticipate they will find use in a range of applications.

Abstract
With rapid emergence of multi-drug resistant microbes, it is imperative to seek alternative means for infection control. Optical waveguides are an auspicious delivery method for precise administration of phototherapy. Studies have shown that phototherapy is promising in fighting against a myriad of infectious pathogens (i.e. viruses, bacteria, fungi, and protozoa) including biofilm-forming species and drug-resistant strains while evading treatment resistance. When administered via optical waveguides, phototherapy can treat both superficial and deep-tissue infections while minimizing off-site effects that afflict conventional phototherapy and pharmacotherapy. Despite great therapeutic potential, exact mechanisms, materials, and fabrication designs to optimize this promising treatment option are underexplored. This review outlines principles and applications of phototherapy and optical waveguides for infection control. Research advances, challenges, and outlook regarding this delivery system are rigorously discussed in a hope to inspire future developments of optical waveguide-mediated phototherapy for the management of infection and beyond.

Abstract
Light-powered micromotors have drawn enormous attention because of their potential applications in cargo delivery, environmental monitoring, and noninvasive surgery. However, the existing micromotors still suffer from some challenges, including slow speed, poor controllability, single locomotion mode, and no deformation during movement. Herein, we employ a combined electrospinning with brushing of Chinese ink to simply fabricate a light-responsive gradient-structured poly(vinyl alcohol)/carbon (PVA/carbon) composite motor. Because of the surface deposition and ultrahigh loading amount of carbon nanoparticles (ca. 43%), the motor exhibits rapid (39 mm/s), direction-controlled, and multimodal locomotion (vertical movement, horizontal motion, rotation) under light irradiation. Simultaneously, gradient alignment structure of the PVA nanofibrous matrix endows the motor with controllable and reversible deformation during locomotion. We finally demonstrate the potential applications of the motors in leakage monitoring, object salvage, smart access, and intelligent assembly. The present work will inspire the design of novel photosensitive motors for applications in various fields, such as microrobots, environmental monitoring, and biomedicine.

Abstract
Photothermal conversion behavior has a vital application to disease therapy, water purification, or uncontacted heaters. The fabrication of high-performance photothermal conversion materials especially for near-infrared (NIR) light and microstructures has attracted a great deal of attention. Among numerous substances, MXene as a new type of 2D material with semi-metallic and unique electromagnetic properties presents a broader absorption of light and even a typical plasmonic absorption near the NIR-I area (808 nm), which has made it suitable for photothermal conversion. Here, we propose a facile approach for preparing a Ti3C2Tx/ionic liquid ink with a high photothermal conversion efficiency. The as-prepared ink has showed good wettability of various substrates as well as the high sensitivity of 808 nm NIR light irradiation and a wide range of thermal variation. After packing the ink into a gel pen refill, the flexible thermal chips could be easily obtained just by pen writing on the soft surface with the designed size, which also have become an optimal candidate for the thermal alarm system.

Abstract
Thirteen readily accessible azo D-π-A dyes, intended for use as photothermal agents, were synthesized using only a few steps. Absorption wavelengths were readily tuned by changing the building blocks, and 6 of these dyes exhibited NIR absorption that would be useful for biomedical applications. Unexpected suppression of an N-C single bond rotation that neighbors the azo bond was observed in the case of 5 dyes. Photothermal conversion efficiency measurements revealed a significant effect of the D moiety in these synthesized azo D-π-A dyes, but neither the π moiety nor the A moiety showed an obvious influence. The obtained results offer valuable information for the design of high-performance azo D-π-A dyes that have utility as photothermal agents.

Abstract
Multi-step biocatalytic reactions have gained increasing importance in recent years because the combination of different enzymes enables the synthesis of a broad variety of industrially relevant products. However, the more enzymes combined, the more crucial it is to avoid cross-reactivity in these cascade reactions and thus achieve high product yields and high purities. The selective control of enzyme activity, i.e., remote on-/off-switching of enzymes, might be a suitable tool to avoid the formation of unwanted by-products in multi-enzyme reactions. This review compiles a range of methods that are known to modulate enzyme activity in a stimulus-responsive manner. It focuses predominantly on in vitro systems and is subdivided into reversible and irreversible enzyme activity control. Furthermore, a discussion section provides indications as to which factors should be considered when designing and choosing activity control systems for biocatalysis. Finally, an outlook is given regarding the future prospects of the field.

Abstract
Biofouling on surfaces of various materials has attracted considerable attention in biomedical and marine industries. Surface grafting based on covalent surface-initiated polymerization offers a popular route to address this problem by providing diverse robust polymer coatings capable of preventing the biofouling in complex environments. However, the existing methods for synthesizing polymer coatings are complicated and rigorous, or require special catalysts, greatly limiting their practical applications. In this work, a radical-cation-based surface-initiated polymerization protocol to graft the surface of darkened trans-polyisoprene (TPI) rubber with a thermo-responsive smart polymer, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), through a simple iodine doping process is reported. A series of characterizations were performed to provide adequate evidence to confirm the successful grafting. Combining the thermal sensitivity of PNIPAM with the photothermal conversion ability of the darkened rubber, efficient bacteria-killing and antifouling capabilities were successfully achieved as a result of temperature-controlled iodine release and switchable amphiphilicity of PNIPAM.

Abstract
One-step double emulsions via only one-step emulsification are leading to an attractive branch of emulsion research studies owing to the ease of preparation and reduced surfactant numbers. In addition to controlling the oil/water ratio, exploiting emulsifiers with desirable amphiphilicity that can stabilize both the inner and outer water/oil interfaces is crucial to the formation of one-step double emulsions. In particular, new emulsifiers with saving laborious efforts are highly preferred in consideration of low cost and practical applications. In this work, a commonly used homopolymer, polyethylene glycol (PEG), was attempted as emulsifiers to prepare emulsions via one-step emulsification. PEG is generally considered as a hydrophilic polymer and always anchored with a hydrophobic polymer to make the copolymer amphiphilic. In the water-chloroform binary system, PEG itself exhibits amphiphilic performance and tailors the formation of single emulsions or double W/O/W emulsions on the dependence of the oil/water ratio and the PEG concentration. A possible mechanism as explained by dissipative particle dynamics simulation was proposed to demonstrate the amphiphilic feature and emulsification capability of PEG. The amphiphilicity of PEG was further tuned by interacting with iodine as a result of the formation of a supramolecular complex, which, in turn, led to the conversion from single emulsions to O/W/O double emulsions. It is believed that this line of research provides inspiration for the preparation of controllable emulsions through supramolecular routes.

Abstract
Materials for CO2 capture have been extensively exploited for climate governance and gas separation. However, their regeneration is facing the problems of high energy cost and secondary CO2 contamination. Herein, a reversed photosynthesis-like process is proposed, in which CO2 is absorbed in darkness while being released under light illumination. The process is likely supplementary to natural photosynthesis of plants, in which, on the contrary, CO2 is released during the night. Remarkably, the material used here is able to capture 9.6 wt.% CO2 according to its active component. Repeatable CO2 capture at room temperature and release under light irradiation ensures its convenient and cost-effective regeneration. Furthermore, CO2 released from the system is successfully converted into a stable compound in tandem with specific catalysts.

Abstract
Pickering emulsions with the use of particles as emulsifiers have been extensively used in scientific research and industrial production due to their edge in biocompatibility and stability compared with traditional emulsions. The control over Pickering emulsion stability and type plays a significant role in these applications. Among the present methods to build controllable Pickering emulsions, tuning the amphiphilicity of particles is comparatively effective and has attracted enormous attention. In this review, we highlight some recent advances in tuning the amphiphilicity of particles for controlling the stability and type of Pickering emulsions. The amphiphilicity of three types of particles including rigid particles, soft particles, and Janus particles are tailored by means of different mechanisms and discussed here in detail. The stabilization-destabilization interconversion and phase inversion of Pickering emulsions have been successfully achieved by changing the surface properties of these particles. This article provides a comprehensive review of controllable Pickering emulsions, which is expected to stimulate inspiration for designing and preparing novel Pickering emulsions, and ultimately directing the preparation of functional materials.
