Structural, Spectroscopic, and Computational Analysis of Heterometallic Thorium Phosphinidiide Complexes

To synthesize complexes with thorium-phosphorus multiple-bond character, reactions of (C₅Me₅)₂Th[P(H)Mes]₂ with monovalent alkali-metal bases, MN(SiMe₃)₂, as well as CuMes, have been investigated. The results with MN(SiMe₃)₂ are phosphinidiide complexes of the form {(C₅Me₅)₂Th[μ₂-P(Mes)][μ₂-P(H)Mes]M(L)_n}₂ (M = Na, n = 0; M = K, L = THF, n = 1; M = Rb, L = THF, n = 1; M = Cs, L = Et₂O, n = 1). With CuMes, the product is a Th₂Cu₃P₅ heterometallic structure, {(C₅Me₅)₂Th[(μ₂-P(H)Mes)P(Mes)]Cu}₂Cu[μ₂-P(H)Mes]. All complexes have been characterized using heteronuclear NMR and IR spectroscopy, density functional theory calculations, and their solid-state structure identified by X-ray crystallography. We also report the structure of {(C₅Me₅)₂Th[(μ₂-As(H)Mes)As(Mes)]Cu}₂Cu[μ₂-As(H)Mes] obtained from (C₅Me₅)₂Th[As(H)Mes]₂ with CuMes.

Heavier element-containing aromatics of [4n+2]-electron systems

While the implication of the aromaticity concept has been dramatically expanded to date since its emergence in 1865, the classical [4n+2]/4n-electron counting protocol still plays an essential role in evaluating the aromatic nature of compounds. Over the last few decades, a variety of heavier heterocycles featuring the formal [4n+2] π-electron arrangements have been developed, which allows for assessing their aromatic nature. In this review, we present recent developments of the [4n+2]-electron systems of heavier heterocycles involving group 13-15 elements. The synthesis, spectroscopic data, structural parameters, computational data, and reactivity are introduced.

Unexpected Reactivity of [(η(5) -1,2,4-tBu3 C5 H2 )Ni(η(3) -P3 )] towards Main Group Nucleophiles and by Reduction

The reduction of [Cp'''Ni(η(3) -P3 )] (1; Cp'''=η(5) -1,2,4-tBu3 C5 H2 ) with potassium produces the complex anion [(Cp'''Ni)2 (μ,η(2:2) -P8 )](2-) (2), which contains a realgar-like P8 unit. The anionic triple-decker sandwich complex [(Cp'''Ni)2 (μ,η(3:3) -P3 )](-) (3) with a cyclo-P3 middle deck is obtained when 1 is treated with NaNH2 as a nucleophile. Na[3] can subsequently be oxidized with AgOTf to the neutral triple-decker complex [(Cp'''Ni)2 (μ,η(3:3) -P3 )] (4). In contrast, 1 reacts with LiPPh2 to give the anionic compound [(Cp'''Ni)2 (μ,η(2:2) -P6 PPh2 )](-) (5), a complex containing a bicyclic P7 fragment capped by two Cp'''Ni units. Protonation of Li[5] with HBF4 leads to the neutral complex [(Cp'''Ni)2 (μ,η(2:2) -(HP6 PPh2 )] (6). Adding LiNMe2 to 1 results in [Cp'''Ni(η(2) -P3 NMe2 )](-) (7) becoming accessible, a complex which forms as a result of nucleophilic attack at the cyclo-P3 ring of 1. The complexes K2 [2], Na[3], 4, 6, and Li[7] were fully characterized and their structures determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Progress in Polyarsolyl Chemistry

The synthesis of heteroatom analogues of the cyclopentadienyl anion Cp^- is a fascinating and challenging field of research. The replacement of methine moieties by phosphorus is well investigated for the synthesis of mono-, tri- and pentaphospholyl ligands. On the other hand, arsenic derivatives are rare and 1,2,4-triarsolyl and tetraarsolyl salts are unknown. Herein, we report on the synthesis of Cs[E₃ C₂ (trip)₂ ] (1 a: E=P; 1 b: E=As; trip=2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl) and Cs[E₄ C(trip)] (2 a: E=P; 2 b: E=As). Compound 1 b represents the first 1,2,4-triarsolyl and 2 b the first tetraarsolyl anion. All salts are obtained in one-pot syntheses using E(SiMe₃ )₃ , 2,4,6-triisopropylbenzoyl chloride and CsF. The products 1 a⋅2 C₄ H₈ O₂ , 2 a⋅Et₂ O and 2 b⋅3 C₄ H₈ O₂ were characterized by X-ray structural analysis, which revealed planar heterocycles. Nucleus-independent chemical shifts (NICS) confirmed the aromaticity of these anions. Notably, compound 2 a⋅Et₂ O is only the second tetraphospholyl ligand which is structurally characterized.

Nine aromatic five-membered rings were computationally characterized in the P₂E₃⁻ (E = N, P, As, Sb, Bi) series of anions.
