Abstract
The tailoring of spin-crossover films has made significant progress over the past decade, mostly motivated by the prospect in technological applications. In contrast to spin-crossover complexes in solution, the investigation of the ultrafast switching in spin-crossover films has remained scarce. Combining the progress in molecule synthesis and film growth with the opportunities at X-ray free-electron lasers, we study the photoinduced spin-state switching dynamics of a molecular film at room temperature. The subpicosecond switching from the S = 0 low-spin ground state to the S = 2 high-spin state is monitored by analyzing the transient evolution of the Fe L3 X-ray absorption edge fine structure, i.e. element-specifically at the switching center of the Fe(II) complex. Our measurements show the involvement of an intermediate state in the switching. At large excitation fluences, the fraction of high-spin molecules saturates at ≈50%, which is likely due to molecule-molecule interaction within the film.

Abstract
Spin transition (ST) materials are attractive for developing photoswitchable devices, but their slow material transformations limit device applications. Size reduction could enable faster switching, but the photoinduced dynamics at the nanoscale remains poorly understood. Here, we report a femtosecond optical pump multimodal X-ray probe study of polymeric nanorods. Simultaneously tracking the ST order parameter with X-ray emission spectroscopy and structure with X-ray diffraction, we observe photodoping of the low-spin-lattice within ∼150 fs. Above a ∼16% photodoping threshold, the transition to the high-spin phase occurs following an incubation period assigned to vibrational energy redistribution within the nanorods activating the molecular spin switching. Above ∼60% photodoping, the incubation period disappears, and the transition completes within ∼50 ps, preceded by the elastic nanorod expansion in response to the photodoping. These results support the feasibility of ST material-based GHz optical switching applications.

Abstract
A detailed understanding of the ultrafast dynamics of halogen-bonded materials is desired for designing supramolecular materials and tuning various electronic properties by external stimuli. Here, a prototypical halogen-bonded multifunctional material containing spin crossover (SCO) cations and paramagnetic radical anions is studied as a model system of photo-switchable SCO hybrid systems using ultrafast electron diffraction and two complementary optical spectroscopic techniques. Our results reveal a sequential dynamics from SCO to radical dimer softening, uncovering a key transient intermediate state. In combination with quantum chemistry calculations, we demonstrate the presence of halogen bonds in the low- and high-temperature phases and propose their role during the photoinduced sequential dynamics, underscoring the significance of exploring ultrafast dynamics. Our research highlights the promising utility of halogen bonds in finely tuning functional properties across diverse photoactive multifunctional materials.

Abstract
One of the most basic molecular photophysical processes is that of spin transitions and intersystem crossing between excited states surfaces. The change in spin states affects the spatial distribution of electron density through the spin orbit coupling interaction. The subsequent nuclear reorganization reports on the full extent of the spin induced change in electron distribution, which can be treated similarly to intramolecular charge transfer with effective reaction coordinates depicting the spin transition. Here, single-crystal [FeII(bpy)3](PF6)2, a prototypical system for spin crossover (SCO) dynamics, is studied using ultrafast electron diffraction in the single-photon excitation regime. The photoinduced SCO dynamics are resolved, revealing two distinct processes with a (450 ± 20)-fs fast component and a (2.4 ± 0.4)-ps slow component. Using principal component analysis, we uncover the key structural modes, ultrafast Fe–N bond elongations coupled with ligand motions, that define the effective reaction coordinate to fully capture the relevant molecular reorganization. Electron spin is a fundamental property of molecules, and changes in spin state affect both molecular structure and dynamics. Here, the authors resolve, by ultrafast electron diffraction, the nuclear reorganization stabilizing spin transitions in a [FeII(bpy)3](PF6)2 crystal.

Abstract
An atomistic understanding of the photoinduced spin-state switching (PSS) within polynuclear systems of d4-d7 transition metal ion complexes is required for their rational integration into light-driven reactions of chemical and biological interest. However, in contrast to mononuclear systems, the multidimensional dynamics of the PSS in solvated molecular arrays have not yet been elucidated due to the expected complications associated with the connectivity between the metal centers and the strong interactions with the surroundings. In this work, the PSS in a solvated triiron(II) metallogrid complex is characterized using transient optical absorption and X-ray emission spectroscopies on the femtosecond time scale. The complementary measurements reveal the photoinduced creation of energy-rich (hot) and long-lived quintet states, whose dynamics differ critically from their mononuclear congeners. This finding opens major prospects for developing novel schemes in solution-phase spin chemistry that are driven by the dynamic PSS process in compact oligometallic arrays.

Abstract
A computational study is presented in which two strategies of ligand modifications have been explored to invert the relative energy of the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) and metal-centered (MC) state in Fe(II)-polypyridyl complexes. Replacing the bipyridines by stronger σ donors increases the ligand-field strength and pushes the MC state to higher energy, while the use of ligands with a larger π conjugation leads to lower MLCT energies.

Abstract
The mechanism of isomerization for azobenzene is a topic still to be completely elucidated. Here, we describe the ultrafast dynamics of a brominated dioxane-methoxy-azobenzene under single crystal conditions by means of femtosecond transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy. Upon excitation with 400 nm light, spectral components with decays of 0.72, 2.9, and >10 ps are observed. The fast components of the system correspond to vibrational cooling of the population on the S1 excited state, with a decay to a local minimum in the reaction coordinate, followed by a longer evolution to a dark intermediate state prior to relaxing to the ground state, S0. The long time constant can be used to describe the isomerization process, returning excited population to the ground state. Spectral frequencies observed at 33 and 82 cm−1 suggest that both rotation and inversion occur in the system, with a stronger contribution coming from the latter due to a weakened N–N double bond in the excited state. This information provides insight into the structural nature of modified azobenzene systems and sets the stage for future structural studies of the molecule’s isomerization dynamics.

Abstract
Femtosecond spectroscopy and electron diffraction are used to characterize spin crossover in single crystal iron(II)-tris(bipyridine)-bis(hexafluorophosphate). The high-spin lifetime is reduced compared to in solution. Preliminary electron diffraction experiments show evidence of ultrafast Fe-N bond elongation associated with spin crossover and the subsequent molecular reorganization resulting from vibrational cooling.

Abstract
Light-induced excited spin state trapping (LIESST) in FeII spin-crossover systems is a process that involves the switching of molecules from low (LS, S = 0) to high spin (HS, S = 2) states. The direct LS-to-HS conversion is forbidden by selection rules, and LIESST involves intermediate states such as 1,3MLCT or 1,3T. The intersystem crossing sequence results in an HS state, structurally trapped by metal-ligand bond elongation through the coherent activation and damping of molecular breathing. The ultrafast dynamics of this process has been investigated in FeN6 ligand field systems, under MLCT excitation. Herein, we studied LIESST in an FeIIN4O2 spin-crossover material of lower symmetry, which allowed for quite intense and low-energy shifted d-d bands. By combining ab initio DFT and TD-DFT calculations and fs optical absorption measurements, we demonstrated that shorter intermediates enhanced coherent structural dynamics, and d-d excitation induced faster LS-to-HS switching, compared to MLCT.

Abstract
Femtosecond magneto-optical measurements detect the formation of a spin-excited state in the vanadium–chromium Prussian blue analogue, which is a molecule-based magnet.
We show that a vanadium–chromium Prussian blue analogue, which is a room-temperature molecule-based magnet, displays a fast magnetic response on a femtosecond timescale that is attributed to the super-exchange interaction between the metal ions. These dynamics are obtained from femtosecond Faraday magneto-optical (MO) measurements, performed at 50 and 300 K. Exciting at the ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) band results in the formation of the 2E excited state on the Cr ion via intersystem crossing (ISC) from the 4LMCT state in less than 250 fs. Subsequent vibrational relaxation in the 2E state occurs on a 0.78 ± 0.05 ps timescale at 50 K and 1.1 ± 0.1 ps at 300 K. The MO measurements can detect the formation of the 2E state on the Cr ion from the change in the super-exchange interaction taking place as a result of the corresponding spin flip associated with the formation of the 2E state. These results open up a new avenue to study molecular magnets using a powerful method that is capable of directly probing spin dynamics on a sub-picosecond timescale in thin film environments.
