The Role of Intraligand Charge Transfer Processes in Iridium(III) Complexes with Morpholine-Decorated 4'-Phenyl-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine. Molecules 2024; 29:3074. Abstract
To investigate the impact of the electron-donating morpholinyl (morph) group on the ground- and excited-state properties of two different types of Ir(III) complexes, [IrCl3(R-C6H4-terpy-κ3N)] and [Ir(R-C6H4-terpy-κ3N)2](PF6)3, the compounds [IrCl3(morph-C6H4-terpy-κ3N)] (1A), 4[Ir(morph-C6H4-terpy-κ3N)2](PF6)3 (2A), [IrCl3(Ph-terpy-κ3N)] (1B) and [Ir(Ph-terpy-κ3N)2](PF6)3 (2B) were obtained. Their photophysical properties were comprehensively investigated with the aid of static and time-resolved spectroscopic methods accompanied by theoretical DFT/TD-DFT calculations. In the case of bis-terpyridyl iridium(III) complexes, the attachment of the morpholinyl group induced dramatic changes in the absorption and emission characteristics, manifested by the appearance of a new, very strong visible absorption tailing up to 600 nm, and a significant bathochromic shift in the emission of 2A relative to the model chromophore. The emission features of 2A and 2B were found to originate from the triplet excited states of different natures: intraligand charge transfer (3ILCT) for 2A and intraligand with a small admixture of metal-to-ligand charge transfer (3IL-3MLCT) for 2B. The optical properties of the mono-terpyridyl iridium(III) complexes were less significantly impacted by the morpholinyl substituent. Based on UV-Vis absorption spectra, emission wavelengths and lifetimes in different environments, transient absorption studies, and theoretical calculations, it was demonstrated that the visible absorption and emission features of 1A are governed by singlet and triplet excited states of a mixed MLLCT-ILCT nature, with a dominant contribution of the first component, that is, metal-ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (MLLCT). The involvement of ILCT transitions was reflected by an enhancement of the molar extinction coefficients of the absorption bands of 1A in the range of 350-550 nm, and a small red shift in its emission relative to the model chromophore.

Abstract
With the goal of developing a new strategy for the synthesis of luminescent Ru(II) complexes, we have prepared herein a new set of bis-tridentate complexes of the type [(py-bpy-Ph-X)Ru(tpy-PhCH3)]ClO4 (X = -CH3, -CH2Br, and -CHO) incorporating both non-cyclometalated and cyclometalated coordination motifs of two isomeric forms of methylphenyl-terpyridine (tpy-PhCH3). Thorough characterization of the synthesized complexes is carried out using standard analytical tools and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Detailed investigations on their photophysical and electrochemical behaviors are carried out in MeCN. The presence of a carbanionic center in the cyclometalating unit increases the absorption spectral window of the complexes into a longer-wavelength region. The complexes also exhibit room-temperature luminescence in the NIR domain with enhanced excited-state lifetimes (up to 20.1 ns) compared to their non-cyclometalated counterpart, [Ru(tpy-PhCH3)2]2+. In the presence of acid, the non-coordinated nitrogen atom in the secondary coordination sphere of the complexes allows fine-tuning of the absorption and emission spectral properties. Excess acid induces de-coordination of the Ru-C bond, which is signaled by a remarkable alteration of their spectral profiles. Cleavage of the Ru-C bond is also possible upon treating the acidified solution of the complexes with visible light. Restoration of the Ru-C bond is again feasible upon treating the solution with base at an elevated temperature (∼70 °C). In essence, "on-off" and "off-on" switching of emission is facilitated upon alternating treatment of the Ru(II) complexes with acid, base, and temperature. DFT and TD-DFT calculations are also performed for assignments of the spectral bands as well as to understand structural changes associated with the switching behaviors of the complexes.

Abstract
A study of a series of six-coordinate Co(III) complexes has been carried out to quantify spectroscopic parameters for a range of ligands that are commonly employed to realize strong charge-transfer absorptions in low-spin, d6 systems. Identification of any three ligand-field transitions allows for the determination of the splitting parameter (10 Dq) as well as the Racah B and C parameters for a given compound. The data revealed a relatively small spread in the magnitude of 10 Dq, ranging from ca. 23 000 cm-1 in the case of [Co(pyrro-bpy)3]3+ (where pyrro-bpy is 4,4'-dipyrrolidinyl-2,2'-bipyridine) to ca. 26 000 cm-1 for [Co(terpy)2]3+ (where terpy is 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine). Significantly, trends across the series suggest that polypyridyl ligands behave as net π-donors when interacting with Co(III), in contrast to the net π-accepting character they exhibit when bound to second- and third-row metals. The influence of strong σ donation associated with carbene-based ligands was evident from the data acquired for [Co(BMeImPy)2]3+ (where BMeImPy is 3,3'-(pyridine-2,6-diyl)bis(1-methyl-1H-3-imidazolium)), where a 10 Dq value of ca. 30 000 cm-1 was determined. Spectroscopic data were also analyzed for [Fe(bpy)3]2+ using the results on [Co(bpy)3]3+ as a reference point. A value for 10 Dq of 21 000 cm-1 was estimated, indicating a reduction in the ligand-field strength of ca. 3000 cm-1 upon replacing Co(III) with Fe(II). We suggest that this approach of taking advantage of the blueshift of the charge-transfer feature in Co(III) complexes to reveal otherwise obscured ligand-field bands can be a useful tool for the development of new ligand systems to expand the photofunctionality of first-row transition-metal-based chromophores.

Abstract
In this work, the photophysical characteristics of [Cu(N^N)2]+ and [Cu(N^N)(P^P)]+ complexes were described. The concept of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and its development throughout the years was also explained. The importance of ΔE(S1–T1) and spin-orbital coupling (SOC) values on the TADF behavior of [Cu(N^N)2]+ and [Cu(N^N)(P^P)]+ complexes is discussed. Examples of ΔE(S1–T1) values reported in the literature were collected and some trends were proposed (e.g. the effect of the substituents at the 2,9 positions of the phenanthroline ligand). Besides, the techniques (or calculation methods) used for determining ΔE(S1–T1) values were described. The effect of SOC in TADF was also discussed, and examples of the determination of SOC values by DFT and TD-DFT calculations are provided. The last chapter covers the applications of [Cu(N^N)2]+ and [Cu(N^N)(P^P)]+ TADF complexes and the challenges that are still needed to be addressed to ensure the industrial applications of these compounds. Bibliographic review of cationic Cu(i) complexes that undergo Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence (TADF). Abstract
Bimetallic trans-[RuII(tpm)(bpy)(μNC)RuII(L)4(CN)]2+, where bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine, tpm is tris(1-pyrazolyl)methane and L = 4-methoxypyridine (MeOpy) or pyridine (py), was examined using ultrafast vis-NIR transient absorption spectroscopy. Of great relevance are the longest-lived excited states in the form of strongly coupled photoinduced mixed-valence systems, which exhibit intense photoinduced absorptions in the NIR and are freely tunable by the judicious choice of the coordination spheres of the metallic ions. Using the latter strategy, we succeeded in tailoring the excited state lifetimes of bimetallic complexes and, in turn, achieving significantly longer values relative to related monometallic complexes. Notable is the success in extending the lifetimes, when considering the higher density of vibrational states, as they are expected to facilitate nonradiative ground-state recovery.

Abstract
Ruthenium polypyridyl type complexes are potent photoactive compounds, and have found - among others - a broad range of important applications in the fields of biomedical diagnosis and phototherapy, energy conversion schemes such as dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) and molecular assemblies for tailored photo-initiated processes. In this regard, the linkage of RuII polypyridyl-type complexes with specific functional moieties is highly desirable to enhance their inherent photophysical properties, e.g., with a targeting function to achieve cell selectivity, or with a dye or redox-active subunits for energy- and electron-transfer. However, the classical approach of performing ligand syntheses first and the formation of Ru complexes in the last steps imposes synthetic limitations with regard to tolerating functional groups or moieties as well as requiring lengthy convergent routes. Alternatively, the diversification of Ru complexes after coordination (termed "chemistry-on-the-complex") provides an elegant complementary approach. In addition to the Click chemistry concept, the rapidly developing synthesis and purification methodologies permit the preparation of Ru conjugates via amidation, alkylation and cross-coupling reactions. In this regard, recent developments in chromatography shifted the limits of purification, e.g., by using new commercialized surface-modified silica gels and automated instrumentation. This review provides detailed insights into applying the "chemistry-on-the-complex" concept, which is believed to stimulate the modular preparation of unpreceded molecular assemblies as well as functional materials based on Ru-based building blocks, including combinatorial approaches.

A series of novel cyclometalated RuII complexes were investigated featuring the tridentate dqp ligand platform (dqp is 2,6-di(quinolin-8-yl)pyridine), in order to utilize the octahedral coordination mode around the Ru center to modulate the electrochemical and photophysical properties. The heteroleptic complexes feature C1 symmetry due to symmetry breaking by the peripheral five- or six-membered carbanionic chelate (phenyl, naphthyl, or anthracenyl units). The chelation mode is controlled by the steric effects and C-H activation selectivity of the ligand, which prompted the development of a general synthesis protocol. The optimized conditions to achieve high overall yields (55-75%) involve NaHCO3 as the base and an simplified purification protocol: i.e., facile chromatographic separation using commercially available amino-functionalized silica applying nonaqueous salt-free conditions to omit the necessity of counterion exchange. The structural, photophysical, and electrochemical properties were studied in depth, and the results were corroborated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Steady state and time-resolved spectroscopy revealed red-shifted absorption (up to 750 nm) and weak IR emission (800-1000 nm) combined with prolonged emission lifetimes (up to 20 ns) in comparison to classical tpy-based (tpy is 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine) complexes. An enhanced stability was observed by blocking the reactive positions of the carbanionic ligand framework, while the reactive positions may be exploited for further functionalization.
