Synthesis and Metalation of Doubly o -Phenylene-Bridged Cyclic Bis(dipyrrin)s with Highly Bent Skeleton of Dibenzoporphyrin(2.1.2.1)

Synthesis of Hetero-Trimetal Porphyrin Nanobelts

This work reported "trinitarian" porphyrin nanobelts, contained hetero-trimetal ions. The high-resolution mass spectrometry and X-ray crystallography proved PNBNiCuPd consisting of three different bent porphyrin(2.1.2.1) metal complex moieties. The redox properties indicate porphyrin nanobelts demonstrate the multielectron donating and accepting properties, more than nine redox processes.

Synthesis of π-Ring-Fused Porphyrin(2.1.1.1)s and Their Rh(I) Complexes

Stable and simplest expanded porphyrins, π-ring-fused porphyrin(2.1.1.1)s and Rh(I) complexes, have been obtained for the first time. Two free bases show chair-shaped molecular conformations, as if reassembled by the halves of porphyrin(1.1.1.1) and porphyrin(2.1.2.1). The insertion of Rh(CO)2 groups induced more twisted molecular conformations. The NMR spectra, X-ray structure, NICS, and ACID of obtained molecules all support their nonaromaticity due to chair-shaped molecular conformations. The protonated and Rh(I) coordination of porphyrin(2.1.1.1)s process red-shifted absorptions in the NIR region.

Benzene-fused porphyrin(2.1.2.1) array: synthesis, structure, and electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

The development of efficient molecular catalysts for the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is very necessary and important for fuel cells. In this work, we report a new benzene-fused porphyrin(2.1.2.1) array, BPD, with a unique S-shaped molecular conformation. The electrochemistry of BPD displays multielectron donating and accepting properties owing to the two porphyrin(2.1.2.1) blocks and degenerate molecular orbitals. The electrocatalytic HER activity of BPD is remarkably higher-that is, BPD exhibited lower overpotential, faster HER kinetics, faster charge transfer kinetics, and extended catalytic stability-than that of the porphyrin(2.1.2.1) copper complex monomer.

Porphyrin(2.1.2.1) organopalladium complexes as efficient singlet oxygen sensitizers

Four new non-planar and non-aromatic porphyrin organopalladium complexes were synthesized. Conformational structures and optical and electronic properties of the obtained organopalladium complexes containing meso-substituted phenyl, p-tert-butylphenyl, or pentafluorophenyl groups were fully investigated. These complexes showed potent capacity for singlet oxygen (1O2) generation under blue-light irradiation, and the 1O2 quantum yields were in the range of 41%-56%, which were comparable to that of Ru(bpy)3Cl2 (57%), and such potency made these organopalladium complexes potential 1O2 photo sensitizers for photodynamic therapy.

Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reduction Reaction of Peripheral Functionalized Cobalt Porphyrins(2.1.2.1)

Two peripheral functionalized clamp-shaped cobalt porphyrin(2.1.2.1) complexes were synthesized, and their electrocatalytic ORR abilities were investigated. The crystal data and optical and redox properties of them were revised by peripheral modification. The ORR capacities and DFT calculations of F5PhCo and F5NCo suggest superior selectivity for the 4e- ORR pathway. This work further confirms the clamp-shaped cobalt porphyrin complexes are ideal Co-N4 ORR catalysts.

Synthesis of Hybrid Porphyrin(2.1.2.1)s and Their Complexation

Novel hybrid porphyrin(2.1.2.1)s and their boron and copper complexes were synthesized using the "toy bricks" synthetic method. Crystal data, frontier molecular orbital calculations, and electrostatic potential surface maps reveal that hybridization in the porphyrin(2.1.2.1) donor-acceptor unit controls the selective coordination of BF2.

Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution of Bent Bis(dipyrrin) Ni(II) Complexes

Planar Ni(II) porphyrinoid complexes have been widely used in electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction and oxygen reduction reaction as well as hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, nonplanar Ni(II) tetra-pyrrolic complexes have not been thoroughly investigated thus far. In this study, three highly bent bis(dipyrrin) Ni(II) complexes have been synthesized to investigate their structure, electronic property, and electrocatalytic HER activities. Cyclic voltammetry and thin-layer UV-visible spectroelectrochemistry studies revealed four redox processes, yielding two reduced species as the final products. The i_c/i_p values of phenyl- and pentafluorophenyl-bearing bis(dipyrrin) Ni(II) complexes were >30 when trifluoroacetic acid was used as the proton source, and their Faradaic efficiencies for H₂ generation were >93%. Density functional theory calculations of the HERs revealed low endothermic energies of bent bis(dipyrrin) Ni(II) complexes.

Synthesis and Properties of Stable 20π Porphyrinoids

The 20π porphyrinoids are immediate higher homologues of 18π porphyrins and differ from porphyrins in aromaticity which in turn affects the structure, properties and chemical reactivities. Research over the years indicated that the 20π porphyrinoids can be stabilized as non-aromatic/anti-aromatic or Mobius aromatic macrocycles using different strategies such as core-modification of porphyrins, non-metal/metal complexation of porphyrins, peripheral modification of porphyrins and expanded porphyrinoids. The structural properties such as aromaticity of the macrocycle can be controlled by choosing the right synthetic strategy. This review will provide an overview of the development in the chemistry of 20π porphyrinoids giving emphasize on the synthesis, structure and electronic properties of these macrocycles which have huge potential for various applications.

A porphyrin(2.1.2.1) bis-boron complex as a deep-red AIE luminophore induced by intermolecular F-π interaction

Mono-/diboron complexes with saddle-shaped molecular conformations were synthesized from porphyrins(2.1.2.1). The boron complexes have unique structure-dependent photophysical properties: (a) monoboron complexes 2a and 2b are not emissive in solution and the solid state, (b) diboron complex 3a shows red emission in toluene, and (c) diboron complex 3b shows aggregation-induced emission (AIE) in the deep-red region due to intermolecular secondary interactions (F-π). This is the first case of a boron porphyrinoid complex that shows AIE emission in the deep-red region in decades.

Low-Valent Zirconocene-Mediated Synthesis of Porphyrin(2.1.2.1)s and Its Extension to Synthesis of a Porphyrin(2.1.2.1) Nanobarrel

Rosenthal's-reagent-mediated intramolecular cyclometallation of α,α-dialkynyldipyrrin nickel(II) complex and subsequent acid treatment afforded a 1,3-butadiene-embedded porphyrin(2.1.2.1), 6, which served as a reactive diene towards dienophiles such as dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (DMAD) and benzyne to give corresponding Diels-Alder adducts. Diels-Alder reaction of 6 and benzdiyne gave adducts 14, 15 a, and 15 b along with a trace amount of porphyrin(2.1.2.1) barrel 13. Stepwise routes using 14 or 15 a/15 b as a substrate allowed for the synthesis of 13 as a single stereoisomer. The nanobarrel structure for 13 was revealed by X-ray diffraction, where its cavity held two chloroform molecules via C-H⋅⋅⋅π interaction. DFT calculations revealed that the electrostatic attraction was dominant with binding energy of 32.8 kcal mol^-1 .

Synthesis, Characterization, and Electrochemistry of Copper Dibenzoporphyrin(2.1.2.1) Complexes

Three copper dibenzoporphyrin(2.1.2.1) complexes having two dipyrromethene units connected through o-phenylen bridges and 4-MePh, Ph, or F₅Ph substituents at the meso positions of the dipyrrins were synthesized and characterized according to their spectral, electrochemical, and structural properties. As indicated by the single-crystal X-ray structures, all three derivatives have highly bent molecular structures, with angles between each planar dipyrrin unit ranging from 89° to 85°, indicative of a nonaromatic molecule. The insertion of copper(II) into dibenzoporphyrins(2.1.2.1) induced a change in the macrocyclic cavity shape from rectangular in the case of the free-base precursors to approximately square for the metalated copper derivatives. Solution electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra at 100 K showed hyperfine coupling of the Cu(II) central metal ion and the N nucleus in the highly bent molecular structures. Electrochemical measurements in CH₂Cl₂ or N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) containing 0.1 M tetrabutylammonium perchlorate (TBAP) were consistent with ring-centered electron transfers and, in the case of reduction, were assigned to electron additions involving two equivalent π centers on the bent nonaromatic molecule. The potential separation between the two reversible one-electron reductions ranged from 230 to 400 mV in DMF, indicating a moderate-to-strong interaction between the equivalent redox-active dipyrrin units of the dibenzoporphyrins(2.1.2.1). The experimentally measured highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) gaps ranged from 2.14 to 2.04 eV and were smaller than those seen for the planar copper tetraarylporphyrins(1.1.1.1), (Ar)₄PCu.

Porphyrin(2.1.2.1) as a novel binucleating ligand: synthesis and molecular structures of mono- and di-rhodium(I) complexes

The first example of monovalent and bimetallic porphyrins(2.1.2.1), the rhodium(I) complex of porphyrin(2.1.2.1), was readily obtained under controlled conditions. The coordinated rhodium(I) drastically influenced the molecular structure and optical and electronic properties. Our results clearly demonstrate that porphyrin(2.1.2.1) could be developed as a new binucleating ligand for the fabrication of bimetallic complexes.

Porphyrinoids with Vinylene Bridges

Porphyrinoids containing vinylene bridges, such as triphyrin(2.1.1), porphycene, porphyrin(2.1.2.1), and hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1), are a relatively new family of porphyrinoids. Vinylene bridges give porphyrinoids a lower symmetry and a flexibility of the framework and they permit cis/trans-isomerization reactions; these factors confer unique properties to these substances, such as coordination to metal ions and aromaticity switching. In this account, the synthesis, crystal structures, and properties of new porphyrinoids containing vinylene bridges are summarized.

Vinylene-Bridged Cyclic Dipyrrin and BODIPY Trimers

Vinylene-bridged cyclic boron–difluoride complex of dipyrrin (BODIPY) trimers were successfully prepared from expanded dimethyl-vinylene bridged hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1) Me-Hex that has the structure of alternate dipyrrins and vinylene bridges. The hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1) Me-Hex can coordinate with boron ions to afford five kinds of cyclic BODIPYs given by step-by-step boron complexations. Crystal structures of all cyclic BODIPYs except for 3BF₂-Me-Hex(b) formed non-planar structures. The theoretical calculation predicted that mono-/bis-boron cyclic BODIPYs show the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) characteristics, whereas tri-boron cyclic BODIPYs have no ICT characteristics. Reflecting these electronic properties, tri-boron cyclic BODIPYs exhibit weak fluorescence in the red region, but mono-/bis-boron cyclic BODIPYs exhibit no emission. Vinylene bridged cyclic dipyrrin trimer Me-Hex is the novel porphyrinoid ligand allowed to control the boron coordination under different reaction conditions to form various boron complexes.

Cyclic butadiyne-linked porphyrin(2.1.2.1) oligomers

Cyclic butadiyne-linked porphyrin(2.1.2.1) oligomers are synthesized from 5,16-diethynylporphyrin(2.1.2.1) by Glaser–Hay coupling. Porphyrin(2.1.2.1) forms a bent structure which gives advantages for making cyclic structure without templating molecules. We isolated cyclic trimer and tetramer and characterized them by MALDI-TOF-MS and [Formula: see text]H NMR spectroscopy, theoretical calculations, UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectra and cyclic voltammetry. The cyclic structure mainly affects the reduction potentials because of expansion of [Formula: see text]-conjugations through butadiyne-linkages to stabilize their LUMOs.

Control of Aromaticity and cis-/trans-Isomeric Structure of Non-Planar Hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1) and Metal Complexes

Vinylene-bridged hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1) was synthesized from dipyrrolyl diphenylethenes by acid-catalyzed condensation reactions. Freebase hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1) forms a distorted structure with non-aromatic characteristics. The aromaticity and molecular configuration of non-planar hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1) can be controlled by insertion of metal ions. Freebase and zinc complexes show a distorted structure without macrocyclic aromaticity, whereas copper complexes show a figure-of-eight structure with macrocyclic aromaticity. It is the first example of aromaticity conversion of a distorted expanded porphyrin involving vinylene bridges.

Homocarbaporphyrinoids: The m-o-m and p-o-p Terphenyl Embedded Expanded Porphyrin Analogues and Their RhI Complexes

Stable homocarbaporphyrinoids were successfully synthesized by incorporating the m-o-m and p-o-p terphenyl units into the porphyrin core. The distinct bonding modes of terphenyl in the macrocycle generated two structural isomers with two and four carbon atoms in the macrocyclic environment. The core was utilized to stabilize the Rh^I ion. The spectral and structural analyses revealed that the restricted (m-o-m) and allowed (p-o-p) conjugation in the macrocyclic core provide overall non-aromatic characteristics both to the free bases and their complexes.

[30]Hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1) as Aromatic Planar Ligand and Its Trinuclear Rhodium(I) Complex

Expanded porphyrins are attractive research targets because of their large and flexible structures, optical and electrochemical properties, and diverse coordination abilities. We are interested in the use of double bonds within expanded porphyrins because double bonds could conduct isomerization, expansion of π-conjugation, and giving different molecular geometry. We, thus, report [30]hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1) 3H-1, which was synthesized by a simple condensation reaction of 1,2-di(pyrrol-2-yl)ethene and pentafluorobenzaldehyde under an acidic condition. The compound 3H-1 exhibited 30π aromatic property with a highly planar structure, displaying intense Soret- and weak Q-like absorption bands. The compound 3H-1 has a sufficient space and dipyrrin-like coordination sites in its cavity. Trinuclear rhodium(I) complex 3Rh-1 was obtained with [Rh(CO)₂Cl]₂ and exhibited six redox potentials.

Crystal structure of aqua-(perchlorato)bis-[μ-(E)-2-({[2-(pyridin-2-yl)eth-yl]imino}-meth-yl)phenolato-κ4N,N',O:O]dicopper(II) perchlorate

The title compound, [Cu2(ClO4)(C14H13N2O)2(H2O)]ClO4, crystallizes as an unsymmetrical dinuclear cation bridged by the phen-oxy O atoms with one CuII atom coordinated by a water mol-ecule and the other by a perchlorate anion, thus making both CuII atoms five-coordinate, and with a further perchlorate anion present for charge balance. A long inter-action [2.9893 (5) Å] between one of the two CuII atoms and an O atom of the perchlorate counter-ion links the cations and anions into linear chains along the a-axis direction. In addition, the water H atoms link with the perchlorate counter-ion. These inter-actions, along with numerous C-H⋯O inter-actions between the tetra-hedral perchlorate anions, link the ions into a complex three-dimensional array. One of the perchlorate anions is disordered over two conformations with occupancies of 0.586 (4) and 0.414 (4).
