Conformation-Controlled Diplatinum(II)-Ferrocene Dyads to Achieve Long-Lived Charge-Separated States

Ferrocenyl PNNP Ligands-Controlled Chromium Complex-Catalyzed Photocatalytic Reduction of CO2 to Formic Acid

3d-transition metal complexes have been gaining much attention as promising candidates for photocatalytic carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction systems. In contrast to the group 7-12 elements, Cr in group 6 has not yet been investigated as the catalyst of CO2 photoreduction because of its intrinsic disadvantages. Cr has a weak reducing ability due to an insufficient number of d electrons and high Lewis acidity which may deactivate the catalyst by strong coordination with a product formate. To overcome these drawbacks, we rationally designed molecular Cr complexes bearing ferrocenyl PNNP tetradentate ligands (FcCrCy, FcCriPr, FcCrtBu, and FcCrPh). These Cr complexes selectively converted CO2 into formic acid (HCO2H) under photocatalytic conditions and, to our knowledge, represent the first molecular Cr catalysts for CO2 photoreduction. The best catalyst FcCrPh achieved a turnover number of 1180 for HCO2H formation with 86% selectivity after 48 h of light irradiation, with a combined use of an organic photosensitizer. Electrochemical and continuous UV-vis absorption analyses clarified the sequential reaction pathways involving multielectron reduction and protonation of a Cr complex. Moreover, through detailed computational studies, photoinduced electron transfer mediated by ferrocenyl groups and intramolecular proton transfer attributed to hemilabile phosphine ligands would be key to the efficient catalysis that overwhelms the inherent disadvantages of Cr.

N,C,N-Pincers in Platinum Bimetallic Complexes: Influence of the Pincer and Bridging Ligands on the Metal-Metal Bond and the Photophysical Properties

Precursors PtCl{κ3-N,C,N-[py-C6HMe2-py]} (1), PtCl{κ3-N,C,N-[py-O-C6H3-O-py]} (2), Pt(OH){κ3-N,C,N-[py-C6HMe2-py]} (3), and Pt(OH){κ3-N,C,N-[py-O-C6H3-O-py]} (4) were used to prepare d8-platinum bimetallic complexes. Precursors 1 and 2 react with AgBF4 and 7-azaindole (Haz) to give [Pt{κ3-N,C,N-[py-C6HMe2-py]}{κ1-N-[Haz]}]BF4 (5) and [Pt{κ3-N,C,N-[py-O-C6H3-O-py]}{κ1-N-[Haz]}]BF4 (6) and 3 and 4 with indolo[2,3-b]indole (H2ii) to generate Pt{κ1-N-[Hii]}{κ3-N,C,N-[py-C6HMe2-py]} (7) and Pt{κ1-N-[Hii]}{κ3-N,C,N-[py-O-C6H3-O-py]} (8). Subsequent addition of 3 and 4 to 5-7 affords bimetallic derivatives [{Pt[κ3-N,C,N-(py-C6HMe2-py)]}2{μ-N,N-[az]}]BF4 (9), [{Pt[κ3-N,C,N-(py-O-C6H3-O-py)]}2{μ-N,N-[az]}]BF4 (10), and {Pt[κ3-N,C,N-(py-C6HMe2-py)]}2{μ-N,N-[ii]} (11). X-ray structures of 9-11 reveal separations between the metals in sequence 9 (3.0515(4) Å) < 10 (3.2689(9) Å) < 11 (3.2949(2) Å). DFT calculations support σ overlap of the dz2 orbitals of platinum atoms, for 9 and 10. Accordingly, their absorption spectra show a MMLCT transition. Complex 9 is a red emitter. The excited state has 3MMLCT characteristics and a Pt-Pt separation of 2.763 Å. Complex 11 is a dual emitter in the red and NIR regions, in solid. Both excited states have a 3LC/LMCT characteristic and platinum-platinum separations of 3.290 and 3.202 Å. Intermediate 5 is a green emitter that achieves quantum yields close to unity, when diluted in PMMA and 1,2-dichloroethane at low concentrations.

Tuning the photoactivated anticancer activity of Pt(iv) compounds via distant ferrocene conjugation

Photoactive prodrugs offer potential for spatially-selective antitumour activity with minimal effects on normal tissues. Excited-state chemistry can induce novel effects on biochemical pathways and combat resistance to conventional drugs. Photoactive metal complexes in particular, have a rich and relatively unexplored photochemistry, especially an ability to undergo facile intersystem crossing and populate triplet states. We have conjugated the photoactive octahedral Pt(iv) complex trans, trans, trans-[Pt(N3)2(OH)2(py)2] to ferrocene to introduce novel features into a candidate photochemotherapeutic drug. The X-ray crystal structure of the conjugate Pt-Fe confirmed the axial coordination of a ferrocene carboxylate, with Pt(iv) and Fe(ii) 6.07 Å apart. The conjugation of ferrocene red-shifted the absorption spectrum and ferrocene behaves as a light antenna allowing charge transfer from iron to platinum, promoting the photoactivation of Pt-Fe with light of longer wavelength. Cancer cellular accumulation is enhanced, and generation of reactive species is catalysed after photoirradiation, introducing ferroptosis as a contribution towards the cell-death mechanism. TDDFT calculations were performed to shed light on the behaviour of Pt-Fe when it is irradiated. Intersystem spin-crossing allows the formation of triplet states centred on both metal atoms. The dissociative nature of triplet states confirms that they can be involved in ligand detachment due to irradiation. The Pt(ii) photoproducts mainly retain the trans-{Pt(py)2}2+fragment. Visible light irradiation gives rise to micromolar activity for Pt-Fe towards ovarian, lung, prostate and bladder cancer cells under both normoxia and hypoxia, and some photoproducts appear to retain Pt(iv)-Fe(ii) conjugation.

Electron spin-controlled charge transfer and the resulting long-lived charge transfer state: from transition metal complexes to organic compounds

The generation of long-lived charge transfer (CT) states in electron donor/acceptor dyads upon photoexcitation is crucial for artificial photosynthesis, photocatalysis and photovoltaics. Electron spin control is a novel strategy to prolong the CT state lifetime via generation of the ³CT triplet state, instead of the traditional short-lived ¹CT state. This method involves a local triplet excited state (³LE) as the precursor of charge separation (CS), and the electron forbidden feature of the charge recombination (CR) of ³CT → S₀vs. the electron spin allowed ¹CT → S₀ prolongs the CT state lifetime. In this article, we summarized the recent developments and challenges in this emerging fascinating area.
