Abstract
A new tetraphenylpyrazine-based tetraimidazole ligand (L) was synthesized and used for subcomponent self-assembly with cis-(tmeda)Pd(NO3)2 and cis-Pt(PEt3)2(OTf)2, leading to the formation of two tetrafacial barrels [Pd8L4(tmeda)8](NO3)16 (1) and [Pt8L4(PEt3)16](OTf)16 (2), respectively. Although ligand L is aggregation-induced emission (AIE) active, barrel 2 showed a magnificently higher AIE activity than ligand L, while 1 failed to retain the AIE properties of the ligand. Pd(II) barrel 1, undergoing an aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) phenomenon, nullified the AIE activity of the ligand to be used in the photophysical application. The enhanced emission in the aggregated state of Pt(II) barrel 2 was used for the recognition of picric acid (PA), which is explosive in nature and one of the groundwater contaminants in landmine areas. The recognition of picric acid was found to be selective in comparison with that of other nitroaromatic compounds (NACs), which could be attributed to ground-state complex formation and resonance energy transfer between picric acid and barrel 2. The use of new AIE-active assembly 2 for selective detection of PA with a low detection limit is noteworthy.

Abstract
A pair of chiral Pt(II) complexes coordinated by simple BINOL and bipyridine ligands displaying aggregation-induced phosphorescence and circularly polarized luminescence were characterized by X-ray crystallography and absorption and emission spectroscopies. The emission of the powder sample was reddish whereas the thin film dispersed in PMMA (fPf = 1 wt%) exhibited a white emission.

Abstract
The employment of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) to design luminescent metal compounds has been the focus of recent intense investigations because of the strong σ-donor properties, which bring stability to the whole system and tend to push the d-d dark states so high in energy that they are rendered thermally inaccessible, thereby generating highly emissive complexes for useful applications such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), or featuring chiroptical properties, a field that is still in its infancy. Among the NHC complexes, those containing organic chromophores such as naphthalimide, pyrene, and carbazole exhibit rich emission behavior and thus have attracted extensive interest in the past five years, especially carbene coinage metal complexes with carbazolate ligands. In this review, the design strategies of NHC-based luminescent platinum and iridium complexes with large spin-orbit-coupling (SOC) are described first. Subsequent paragraphs illustrate the recent advances of luminescent coinage metal complexes with nucleophilic- and electrophilic-based carbenes based on silver, gold, and copper metal complexes that have the ability to display rich excited state emissions in particular via thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). The luminescence mechanism and excited state dynamics are also described. We then summarize the advance of NHC-metal complexes in the aforementioned fields in recent years. Finally, we propose the development trend of this fast-growing field of luminescent NHC-metal complexes.

Abstract
Anthracene crude oil is a common source of phenanthrene for its industrial use. The isolation of phenanthrene from this source is a challenging task due to very similar physical properties to its isomer anthracene. We report here a water-soluble Pd(II) molecular boat (MB1) with unusual structural topology that was obtained by assembling a flexible tetrapyridyl donor (L) with a cis-Pd(II) acceptor. The flexible backbone of the boat enabled it to breathe in the presence of a guest optimizing the fit within the cavity. The boat binds phenanthrene more strongly than anthracene, which enabled separation of phenanthrene with an >98% purity from an equimolar mixture of the two isomers using MB1 as an extracting agent. MB1 represents a unique example of a coordination receptor suitable for selective aqueous extraction of phenanthrene from anthracene with reusability of several cycles.

Abstract
A series of chiral cyclometalated iridium complexes of the type [Ir(C^N)2(C^C:)], {(C^N) = ppy (2); dfppy (3)} featuring a naphthalimide N-heterocyclic carbene ligand (C^C:) = (Naphthalimide-NHC) are described and fully characterized. The racemic complexes rac-2 and rac-3 were resolved via chiral column chromatography techniques into their corresponding enantiopure species Δ-2, Λ-2, Δ-3, Λ-3 as confirmed by their CD curves. This unique class of molecules containing organic and inorganic chromophores might be used as a platform to probe the stereochemical effect on the photophysical properties. Vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) was used as an important tool to assign successfully the stereochemistry of the enantiomers. TD-DFT calculations are also advanced to support the experimental studies and to rationalize the observed results.

Abstract
Two new heterobimetallic cages, a trigonal‐bipyramidal and a cubic one, were assembled from the same mononuclear metalloligand by adopting the molecular library approach, using iron(II) and palladium(II) building blocks. The ligand system was designed to readily assemble through subcomponent self‐assembly. It allowed the introduction of steric strain at the iron(II) centres, which stabilizes its paramagnetic high‐spin state. This steric strain was utilized to drive dynamic complex‐to‐complex transformations with both the metalloligand and heterobimetallic cages. Addition of sterically less crowded subcomponents as a chemical stimulus transformed all complexes to their previously reported low‐spin analogues. The metalloligand and bipyramid incorporated the new building block more readily than the cubic cage, probably because the geometric structure of the sterically crowded metalloligand favours the cube formation. Furthermore it was possible to provoke structural transformations upon addition of more favourable chelating ligands, converting the cubic structures into bipyramidal ones.

Abstract
Enantiopure Λ-[Ir(dfppy)2(MeCN)2](PF6) and Δ-[Ir(dfppy)2(MeCN)2](PF6) (where dfppy is (4,6-difluoropheny)pyridine) were demonstrated to preferentially react with (S,S)-1,2-bis(arylsulfinyl)ethane and (R,R)-1,2-bis(arylsulfinyl)ethane, respectively, under thermodynamic equilibrium. Sequential treatment of Λ-[Ir(dfppy)2(MeCN)2](PF6) and Δ-[Ir(dfppy)2(MeCN)2](PF6) with C2-symmetric bis-sulfoxides led to diastereoselective formation of the corresponding diastereomers Λ-[Ir(dfppy)2(R,R)-bis-sulfoxide)](PF6) in 90-92% and Δ-[Ir(dfppy)2(S,S)-bis-sulfoxide)](PF6) in 88-90%, respectively. The uncoordinated (R,S)-bis-sulfoxides were afforded in 45% with >97% de values. Enantiopure (S,S)-bis-sulfoxides and (R,R)-bis-sulfoxides were respectively obtained by the release of sulfoxide ligands from the corresponding complexes in the presence of glycine in yields of 20-21% with 97-99% ee values. The enantioreceptors Λ-[Ir(dfppy)2(MeCN)2](PF6) and Δ-[Ir(dfppy)2(MeCN)2](PF6) can be recycled and reused in the next reaction cycle. Moreover, a protocol for asymmetric oxidation of prochiral bis-sulfide into enantiopure C2 symmetric bis-sulfoxide was also developed in a high enantioselectivity. The absolute configurations at the metal centers and sulfur atoms were determined by X-ray crystallography.

Abstract
Molecules capable of producing zero-field circularly polarized phosphorescence (CPP) are highly valuable for chiroptoelectronic applications that rely on triplet exciton. However, the paucity of tractable molecular design rules for obtaining CPP emission has inhibited full utilization. We report amplification of CPP by the formation of helical co-assemblies consisting of achiral square planar cycloplatinated complexes and small fractions of homochiral cycloplatinated complexes. The latter has a unique Pfeiffer effect during the formation of superhelical co-assemblies, enabling versatile chiroptical control. Large dissymmetry factors in electronic absorption (g abs, 0.020) and phosphorescence emission (g lum, 0.064) are observed from the co-assemblies. These values are two orders of magnitude improved relative to those of individual molecules. In addition, photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY) also increase by a factor of ten. Our structural, photophysical, and quantum chemical investigations reveal that the chiroptical amplification is attributable to utilization of both the magnetically allowed electronic transition and asymmetric coupling of excitons. The strategy overcomes the trade-off between g lum and PLQY which has frequently been found for previous molecular emitters of circularly polarized luminescence. It is anticipated that our study will provide new insight into the future research for the exploitation of the full potential of CPP.

Abstract
A new pair of adducts comprising one chiral Pt(ii) complex cation, [Pt((−)-L1)(Dmpi)]+ ((−)-1) or [Pt((+)-L1)(Dmpi)]+ ((+)-1) [(−)-L1 = (−)-4,5-pinene-6′-phenyl-2,2′-bipyridine, (+)-L1 = (+)-4,5-pinene-6′-phenyl-2,2′-bipyridine, Dmpi = 2,6-dimethylphenylisocyanide], together with one TCNQ˙− anion have been obtained, and the structures have been confirmed via single-crystal X-ray crystallography and infrared (IR) spectroscopy. The chiral Pt(ii) cation and TCNQ˙− anion are dissociated in MeOH solution, while charge transfer adducts are formed in H2O solution, leading to perturbation of the electronic structure and alteration of the chiral environment, as evidenced by the differences in the UV-vis absorption and electronic circular dichroism spectra. The solvent-tuned charge-transfer properties also have been validated through emission and resonance light scattering spectra. The interesting findings may have potential applications in the development of black absorbers and wide band gap semiconductors. A new couple of charge transfer adducts comprising of one chiral Pt(ii) complex cation together with one TCNQ˙− anion have been prepared, and solvent-induced variances of absorption, luminescence as well as chiral spectra have been investigated.![]()

Abstract
Two organometallic ligands L1 (trans-[p-MeSC6H4C≡C-Pt(PR3)2-C≡CC6H4SMe; R = Me]) and L2 (R = Et) react with CuX salts (X = Cl, Br, I) in MeCN to form one-dimensional (1D) or two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymers (CPs). The clusters formed with copper halide can either be step cubane Cu4I4, rhomboids Cu2X2, or simply CuI. The formed CPs with L1, which is less sterically demanding than L2, exhibit a crystallization solvent molecule (MeCN), whereas those formed with L2 do not incorporate MeCN molecules in the lattice. These CPs were characterized by X-ray crystallography, thermogravimetric analysis, IR, Raman, absorption, and emission spectra as well as photophysical measurements in the presence and absence of crystallization MeCN molecules for those CPs with the solvent in the lattice (i.e., [(Cu4I4)L1·MeCN] n (CP1), [(Cu2Br2)L1·2MeCN] n (CP3), and [(Cu2Cl2)L1·MeCN] n (CP5)). The crystallization molecules were removed under vacuum to evaluate the porosity of the materials by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (N2 at 77 K). The 2D CP shows a reversible type 1 adsorption isotherm for both CO2 and N2, indicative of microporosity, whereas the 1D CPs do not capture more solvent molecules or CO2.
