Abstract
In nature, molecular environments in proteins can sterically protect and stabilize reactive species such as organic radicals through non-covalent interactions. Here, we report a near-infrared fluorescent rotaxane in which the stabilization of a chemically labile squaraine fluorophore by the coordination of a tetralactam macrocycle can be controlled chemically and electrochemically. The rotaxane can be switched between two co-conformations in which the wheel either stabilizes or exposes the fluorophore. Coordination by the wheel affects the squaraine's stability across four redox states and renders the radical anion significantly more stable-by a factor of 6.7-than without protection by a mechanically bonded wheel. Furthermore, the fluorescence properties can be tuned by the redox reactions in a stepwise manner. Mechanically interlocked molecules provide an excellent scaffold to stabilize and selectively expose reactive species in a co-conformational switching process controlled by external stimuli.

Synthesis and Characterization of Newly Designed and Highly Solvatochromic Double Squaraine Dye for Sensitive and Selective Recognition towards Cu 2. MOLECULES (BASEL, SWITZERLAND) 2022; 27:molecules27196578. Abstract
Synthesis and characterization of a novel and zwitterionic double squaraine dye (DSQ) with a unique D-A-A-D structure is being reported. Contrary to the conventional mono and bis-squaraine dyes with D-A-D and D-A-D-A molecular frameworks reported so far, DSQ dye demonstrated strong solvatochromism allowing for the multiple ion sensing using a single probe by judicious selection of the suitable solvent system. The DSQ dye exhibited a large solvatochromic shift of about 200 nm with color changes from the visible to NIR region with metal ion sensitivity. Utilization of a binary solvent consisted of dimethylformamide and acetonitrile (1:99, v/v), highly selective detection of Cu2+ ions with the linearity range from 50 μM to 1 nM and a detection limit of 6.5 × 10-10 M has been successfully demonstrated. Results of the Benesi-Hildebrand and Jobs plot analysis revealed that DSQ and Cu2+ ions interact in the 2:1 molecular stoichiometry with appreciably good association constant of 2.32 × 104 M-1. Considering the allowed limit of Cu2+ ions intake by human body as recommended by WHO to be 30 μM, the proposed dye can be conveniently used for the simple and naked eye colorimetric monitoring of the drinking water quality.

Abstract
The nature of linear photophysical and nonlinear optical properties of a new squaraine derivative 2,4-bis[4-(azetidyl)-2-hydroxyphenyl]squaraine (1) with efficient near-infrared (NIR) emission was comprehensively analyzed based on spectroscopic, photochemical, and two-photon absorption (2PA) measurements, along with quantum chemical analysis. The steady-state absorption, fluorescence, and excitation anisotropy spectra of 1 and its fluorescence emission lifetimes revealed the multiple aspects of the electronic structure of 1, including the relative orientations of the main transition dipoles, effective rotational volumes in solvents of different polarities, and a maximum molar extinction of 1.35 × 10-5 M-1·cm-1, which is unusually small for similar symmetric squaraines. The degenerate 2PA spectrum of 1 was obtained over a broad spectral range under femtosecond excitation, using standard open-aperture Z-scan and two-photon induced fluorescence methods, revealing maximum 2PA cross sections of ∼400 GM. Squaraine 1 exhibited efficient superluminescence emission in the polar solvent (dichloromethane) at room temperature under femtosecond pumping conditions. Quantum chemical analysis of the electronic structure of 1 was performed using the DFT/TD-DFT level of theory and found to be in good agreement with experimental data. The new squaraine derivative 1 displayed high fluorescence quantum yield, efficient NIR superluminescence, large 2PA cross sections, and high photostability with a photodecomposition quantum yield ∼4 × 10-6, suggesting its potential for applications in two-photon fluorescent bioimaging and lasing.

Abstract
Squaraines (SQs) are unusual cyanine dyes with a unique resonance-stabilized zwitterionic structure. These dyes have attracted significant attention in the fields of organic electronics and organic photonics, due to their facile synthesis, intense and narrow visible and near-infrared absorption/emission, high photostability, low biotoxicity, etc. In this review, we summarize the recent progress of SQ-based fluorescent materials and their biomedical applications. After a brief introduction to SQs, general synthetic routes and design principles of SQ-based fluorescent materials, as well as their aggregation-induced luminescence behaviors, are discussed. Subsequently, their biomedical applications for cell imaging and as fluorescent sensors and therapeutic agents are introduced. Finally, a summary and perspective are given for promoting the development of SQs-based fluorescent materials.

Abstract
We have synthetized two classes of dibenzofulvene-arylamino derivatives with an H-shape design, for a total of six different molecules. The molecular structures consist of two D-A-D units connected by a thiophene or bitiophene bridge, using diarylamino substituents as donor groups anchored to the 2,7- (Group A) and 3,6- (Group B) positions of the dibenzofulvene backbone. The donor units and the thiophene or bithiophene bridges were used as chemico-structural tools to modulate electro-optical and morphological-electrical properties. A combination of experiments, such as absorption measurements (UV-Vis spectroscopy), cyclic voltammetry, ellipsometry, Raman, atomic force microscopy, TD-DFT calculation and hole-mobility measurements, were carried out on the synthesized small organic molecules to investigate the differences between the two classes and therefore understand the relevance of the molecular design of the various properties. We found that the anchoring position on dibenzofulvene plays a crucial key for fine-tuning the optical, structural, and morphological properties of molecules. In particular, molecules with substituents in 2,7 positions (Group A) showed a lower structural disorder, a larger molecular planarity, and a lower roughness.

Abstract
We synthesized a metal-organic framework (MOF) using a ligand bearing haloalkoxy chains as a radical precursor. The radicals generated in the MOF upon photoirradiation were stable even at 250 K or under an O2 atmosphere, despite radicals generated from the ligand decomposing at 200 K; thus, the regular arrangement of radicals effectively stabilized them. Moreover, a unique photoproduct was obtained only in the MOF, indicating that the confinement effect in the nanospace enabled a specific reaction that did not occur in the bulk state. We propose a new platform for exploring chemical reactions and materials based on reactive species.

Abstract
Electrofluorochromic devices (EFCDs) that allow the modulation of the light emitted by electroactive fluorophores are very attractive in the research field of optoelectronics. Here, the electrofluorochromic behaviour of a series of squaraine dyes was studied for the first time. In solutions, all compounds are photoluminescent with maxima located in the range 665-690 nm, characterized by quantum yields ranging from 30% to 4.1%. Squaraines were incorporated in a polymer gel used as an active layer in all-in-one gel switchable EFCDs. An aggregation induced quenching occurs in the gel phase, causing a significant decrease in the emission quantum yield in the device. However, the squaraines containing the thieno groups (thienosquaraines, TSQs) show a panchromatic emission and their electrofluorochromism allows the tuning of the fluorescence intensity from 500 nm to the near infrared. Indeed, the application of a potential difference to the device induces a reversible quenching of their emission that is significantly higher and occurs at shorter switching times for TSQs-based devices compared to the reference squaraine dye (DIBSQ). Interestingly, the TSQs fluorescence spectral profile becomes more structured under voltage, and this could be explained by the shift of the aggregates/monomer equilibrium toward the monomeric species, due to electrochemical oxidation, which causes the disassembling of aggregates. This effect may be used to modulate the colour of the fluorescence light emitted by a device and paves the way for conceiving new electrofluorochromic materials based on this mechanism.

Abstract
In this review, we provide a brief overview of the contribution that computational studies can offer to the elucidation of the electronic mechanisms responsible for the electrochromism phenomenon, through the use of the density functional theory (DFT) and its time-dependent formulation (TDDFT). Although computational studies on electrochromic systems are not as numerous as those for other physico-chemical processes, we will show their reliability and ability to predict structures, excitation energies, and redox potentials. The results confirm that these methods not only help in the interpretation of experimental data but can also be used for the rational design of molecules with interesting electrochromic properties to be initiated for synthesis and experimental characterization.

Abstract
Electrochromic devices (ECDs) that allow the modulation of light transmission are very attractive in the research field of energy saving. Here all-in-one gel switchable ECDs based on mixed-valence electroactive compounds were developed. The use of the thienoviologen/ferrocene couple as cathode and anode, respectively, leads to a significant electrochromic band in the visible range (550–800 nm), with a color change from yellow to green, and to a lower band in the NIR region (1000–1700 nm), due to the presence of one electroactive-chromic species. Replacement of the electroactive ferrocene with a fluorene-diarylamine electroactive-chromic species, allows to extend and intensify the absorption in the NIR region, thus affording modulation of the solar radiation from 500 up to 2200 nm. High optical contrast, fast coloration and bleaching times and outstanding coloration efficiencies were measured for all observed absorption bands upon the application of small potential differences (1.4 V < DV < 2 V).

Abstract
Abstract
Squaraines, two-fold condensation products in 1,3-position of squaric acid, represent dyes or pigments of high actuality. After their first boom in electrophotography diverse applications are presently studied in a wide area of research, which reaches from electrooptical materials to biosensors and compounds used in photodynamic therapy. Absorption and/or emission ranges in the NIR are mandatory for many of these techniques. The present article deals with stilbenoid squaraines, which feature an extended conjugation in their biradicaloid D-π-A-π-D structure. Due to the charge-transfer character of the excitation, boundaries are set for the optimal length of the conjugation. The absorption maxima of the stilbenoid squaraines and their aggregates are lying in chloroform as a solvent between 600 and 1000 nm. In the solid state panchromatic absorptions can be observed, which reach far into the NIR region. The facile preparation of squaraines bearing stilbene building blocks in one or two of their arms and moreover the easy access to dyes with multiple squaraine units fixed to stilbenoid scaffolds promise a wide palette of further applications in materials science.

Abstract
Carbon monoxide is a key C1 feedstock for the industrial production of hydrocarbons, where it is used to make millions of tonnes of chemicals, fuels, and solvents per annum. Many transition metal complexes can coordinate CO, but the formation of new C−C bonds in well-defined compounds from the scission and subsequent coupling of two or more CO moieties at a transition metal centre remains a challenge. Herein, we report the use of low-coordinate iron(II) complexes for the selective scission and homologation of CO affording unusual squaraines and iron carboxylates at ambient temperature and pressure. A modification of the ligand framework allows for the isolation and structural characterisation of a proposed metallacyclic Fe(II) carbene intermediate. These results indicate that, with the appropriate choice of supporting ligands, it is possible to cleave and homologate carbon monoxide under mild conditions using an abundant and environmentally benign low-coordinate, first row transition metal. Metal-mediated activation of CO for C-C coupling reactions is a valuable approach to carbon monoxide valorization. Here, the authors use low-coordinate iron(II) complexes for the selective scission and homologation of CO affording unusual squaraines and iron carboxylates under mild conditions.

Abstract
A new family of fluorescent thiophene and thienothiophene-containing squaraine dyes is described with tunable wavelengths that cover the absorption/emission range of 600–800 nm. The deep-red and near-infrared fluorescent compounds were easily prepared by simple synthesis and purification methods. Spectral studies showed that each squaraine was rapidly encapsulated by a tetralactam macrocycle, with nanomolar affinity in water, to produce a threaded supramolecular complex with high chemical stability, increased fluorescence quantum yield, and decreased fluorescence quenching upon dye self-aggregation. Energy transfer within the supramolecular complex permitted multiplex emission. That is, two separate dyes with fluorescence emission bands that match the popular Cy5 and Cy7 channels, could be simultaneously excited with a beam of 375 nm light. A broad range of practical applications is envisioned in healthcare diagnostics, microscopy, molecular imaging, and fluorescence-guided surgery.

Abstract
The spectroelectrochemical features of some recently synthesized borepins have been predicted herein using the methods based on density functional theory. The computed electronic spectra of neutral, radical anion, and dianion species clearly suggest that these molecules can be used as new electrochromic materials. The excellent agreement with the available structural and absorption experimental data for the neutral systems made us confident for the results obtained for charged species and suggests their potential use as electrochromic materials.

Abstract
The integration of two quite different techniques, conventional electrochemistry and spectroscopy, into spectroelectrochemistry (SEC) provides a complete description of chemically driven electron transfer processes and redox events for different kinds of molecules and nanoparticles. SEC possesses interdisciplinary advantages and can further expand the scopes in the fields of analysis and other applications, emphasizing the hot issues of analytical chemistry, materials science, biophysics, chemical biology, and so on. Considering the past and future development of SEC, a review on the recent progress of SEC is presented and selected examples involving surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), near-infrared (NIR), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), fluorescence, as well as other SEC are summarized to fully demonstrate these techniques. In addition, the optically transparent electrodes and SEC cell design, and the typical applications of SEC in mechanism study, electrochromic device fabrication, sensing and protein study are fully introduced. Finally, the key issues, future perspectives and trends in the development of SEC are also discussed.

Abstract
The importance of organic electrochromic materials has grown considerably in recent decades due to their application in smart window, automotive, and aircraft technologies. Theoretical prediction of the optical properties should contribute to their better characterization and help the explanation of the experimental data. By using various exchange-correlation functionals, we show how density functional theory (DFT) and the related time-dependent formulation (TDDFT) are able to correctly reproduce the spectrochemical properties of dithiolodithiole and thiophene organic electrochromic systems.

Abstract
A conceptually new type of enzymatic cleavage assay is reported that utilizes in situ supramolecular capture of the fluorescent product. A squaraine-derived substrate with large blocking groups at each end of its structure cannot be threaded by a tetralactam macrocycle until the blocking groups are removed by enzyme cleavage. A prototype design responds to viral neuraminidase, an indicator of influenza infection, and also measures susceptibility of the sample to neuraminidase inhibitor drugs. The substrate structure incorporates three key features: (a) a bis(4-amino-3-hydroxyphenyl)squaraine core with bright deep-red fluorescence and excellent photostability, (b) an N-methyl group at each end of the squaraine core that ensures fast macrocycle threading kinetics, and (c) sialic acid blocking groups that prevent macrocycle threading until they are removed by viral neuraminidase. The enzyme assay can be conducted in aqueous solution where dramatic colorimetric and fluorescence changes are easily observed by the naked eye. Alternatively, affinity capture beads coated with macrocycle can be used to immobilize the liberated squaraine and enable a range of heterogeneous analysis options. With further optimization, this new type of neuraminidase assay may be useful in a point of care clinic to rapidly diagnose influenza infection and also determine which of the approved antiviral inhibitor drugs is likely to be the most effective treatment for an individual patient. The assay design is generalizable and can be readily modified to monitor virtually any type of enzyme-catalyzed cleavage reaction.

Abstract
Chemical or electrochemical one-electron oxidation of 5-N-arylaminothiazoles was found to afford stable radical cations. For chemical oxidation, 1 equivalent of [(4-BrC6H4)3N][SbCl6] (Magic Blue, MB) was added to CH2Cl2 solutions of the thiazoles, and the thus-obtained radicals showed light absorption in the near-infrared region. Electrochemical oxidation also led to bathochromic shifts in the absorption bands, and the obtained spectra were similar to those derived from the chemically oxidized species. These radicals afforded electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra that are consistent with the notion of stable nitrogen radicals (half-life≤385 h). The EPR spectrum of a thiazole containing 4-dimethylaminophenyl groups on the nitrogen atom at the 5-position changed significantly upon adding >3 equivalents of MB. Details of the electronic structures of the experimentally obtained radical cations were generated from theoretical calculations.
