Abstract
Numerous industrial processes utilise gaseous chemical feedstocks to produce useful chemical products. Atmospheric and other small molecule gases, including anthropogenic waste products (e.g. carbon dioxide), can be viewed as sustainable building blocks to access value-added chemical commodities and materials. While transition metal complexes have been well documented in the reduction and transformation of these substrates, molecular complexes of the terrestrially abundant alkaline earth metals have also demonstrated promise with remarkable reactivity reported towards an array of industrially relevant gases over the past two decades. This review covers low oxidation state and hydrido group 2 complexes and their role in the reduction and transformation of a selection of important gaseous substrates towards value-added chemical products.

Abstract
Since the seminal discovery of phenyl azide by Grieß in 1864, a variety of organic azides (R-N3) have been developed and extensively studied. The amenability of azides to a number of reactions has expanded their utility as building blocks not only in organic synthesis but also in bioorthogonal chemistry and materials science. Over the decades, it has been demonstrated that the reactions of main group compounds with azides lead to diverse N-containing main group molecules. In view of the pronounced progress in this area, this review summarizes the reactions of main group compounds with azides, emphatically introducing their reaction patterns and mechanisms. The reactions of forming inorganic nitrogen species are not included in this review.

Abstract
Utilization of main-group metals as alternatives to transition metals in homogeneous catalysis has become a hot research area in recent years. However, their application in catalytic hydrogenation is less common due to the difficulty in heterolytic cleavage of the H-H bond. Employing aromatization/de-aromatization metal-ligand cooperation (MLC) highly enhances the H2 activation process, offering an efficient approach for the hydrogenation of unsaturated molecules catalyzed by main-group metals. Herein, we report a series of new magnesium pincer complexes prepared using PNNH-type pincer ligands. The complexes were characterized by NMR and X-ray single-crystal diffraction. Reversible activation of H2 and N-H bonds by MLC employing these pincer complexes was developed. Using the new magnesium complexes, homogeneously catalyzed hydrogenation of aldimines and ketimines was achieved, affording secondary amines in excellent yields. Control experiments and DFT studies reveal that a pathway involving MLC is favorable for the hydrogenation reactions. Moreover, the efficient catalysis was extended to the selective hydrogenation of quinolines and other N-heteroarenes, presenting the first example of hydrogenation of N-heteroarenes homogeneously catalyzed by early main-group metal complexes. This study provides a new strategy for hydrogenation of C═N bonds catalyzed by magnesium compounds and enriches the research of main-group metal catalysis.

Abstract
The synthesis, characterization, and catalytic application of six aluminum alkyl complexes supported by various imino-phosphanamidinate chalcogenide ligands are described. Six different unsymmetrical imino-phosphanamidinate chalcogenide ligands [NHIRP(Ph)(E)NH-Dipp] [R = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl (Dipp), E = S (2a-H), Se (2b-H); R = mesityl (Mes), E = S (3a-H), Se (3b-H); R = tert-butyl (tBu), E = S (4a-H), Se (4b-H)] were prepared by the oxidation of respective imino-phosphanamide ligands (1a, 1b and 1c) with elemental chalcogen atoms (S and Se). The aluminum complexes with imino-phosphanamidinate chalcogenide ligands with the general formulae [κ2NN-{NHIRP(Ph)(E)N-Dipp}AlMe2] [R = Dipp, E = S (5a), Se (5b); R = Mes, E = S (6a), Se (6b)] or [κ2NE-{NHIRP(Ph)(E)N-Dipp}AlMe2] [R = tBu, E = S (7a), Se (7b)] were synthesized in good yields from the reaction of the suitable protic ligands (2a,b-H-4a,b-H) and trimethylaluminum in a 1 : 1 molar ratio in toluene at room temperature. All the protic ligands and aluminum complexes were well characterized by multi-nuclear NMR spectroscopy, and the solid-state structures of 2a,b-H-4a,b-H, 5a,b-6a,b and 7b are established by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The aluminum complexes 5a,b-7a,b were tested as catalysts for the hydroboration of nitriles, alkynes, and alkenes under mild conditions. The catalytic hydroboration reactions of nitriles, alkynes, and alkenes were accomplished with complex 5b at a mild temperature under solvent-free conditions to afford a high yield of the corresponding N,N-diborylamines, vinylboranes and alkyl boronate esters, respectively.

Abstract
A method to reduce aldimines through hydrosilylation is reported. The catalytic system involves calcium triflimide (Ca(NTf2)2) and potassium hexafluorophosphate (KPF6) which have been shown to act in a synergistic manner. The expected amines are obtained in fair to very high yields (40-99%) under mild conditions (room temperature in most cases). To illustrate the potential of this method, a bioactive molecule with antifungal properties was prepared on the gram scale and in high yield in environmentally friendly 2-methyltetrahydrofuran. Moreover, it is shown in this example that the imine can be prepared in situ from the aldehyde and the amine without isolating the imine. The mechanism involved has been explored experimentally and through DFT calculations, and the results are in accordance with an electrophilic activation of the silane by the calcium catalyst.

Abstract
The conjugated bis-guanidinate-supported zinc hydride [{LZnH}2; L = {(ArHN) (ArN)-C═N-C═(NAr) (NHAr); Ar = 2,6-Et2-C6H3}] (I)-catalyzed highly demanding exclusive 1,2-regioselective hydroboration and hydrosilylation of N-heteroarenes is demonstrated with excellent yields. This protocol is compatible with many pyridines and N-heteroarene derivatives, including electron-donating and -withdrawing substituents. Catalytic intermediates, such as [(LZnH) (4-methylpyridine)] IIA, [(L'ZnH) (4-methylpyridine) IIA', where L' = CH{(CMe) (2,6-Et2C6H3N)}2)], LZn(1,2-DhiQ) (isoquinoline) III, [L'Zn(1,2-DhiQ) (isoquinoline)] III', and LZn(1,2-(3-MeDHQ)) (3-methylquinoline) V, were isolated and thoroughly characterized by NMR, HRMS, and IR analyses. Furthermore, X-ray single-crystal diffraction studies confirmed the molecular structures of compounds IIA', III, and III'. The NMR data proved that the intermediate III or III' reacted with HBpin and gave a selective 1,2-addition hydroborated product. Stoichiometric experiments suggest that V and III independently reacted with silane, yielding selective 1,2-addition of mono- and bis-hydrosilylated products, respectively. Based on the isolation of intermediates and a series of stoichiometric experiments, plausible catalytic cycles were established. Furthermore, the intermolecular chemoselective hydroboration reaction over other reducible functionalities was studied.

Abstract
Sulfated zirconium oxide (SZO) capped with silylium-like ions reacts with (cod)Ir(py)Cl (cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene; py = pyridine) to form [Ir(cod)py][SZO] (1) and Me3SiCl. 1 can also be formed in reactions of phosphonium functionalized SZO and [Ir(cod)(OSi(OtBu)3]2, which forms [Ir(cod)P(tBu)2Ph][SZO] (2), followed by reaction with pyridine to form 1. FTIR and 15N{1H} MAS NMR spectroscopy are consistent with coordination of pyridine in 1 to an electrophilic iridium. 1 is moderately active in the dearomative hydroboration of pyridine. The primary product of this reaction is 1,2-dihydropyridine, which converts to the 1,4-dihydropyridine product at long reaction times. 1 catalyzes the dearomative hydroboration of a variety of substituted pyridines and is also reactive toward pyrazines and N-methylimidazole.

Abstract
The addition of a B-H bond to an unsaturated bond (polarized or unpolarized) is a powerful and atom-economic tool for the synthesis of organoboranes. In recent years, s-block organometallics have appeared as alternative catalysts to transition-metal complexes, which traditionally catalyze the hydroboration of unsaturated bonds. Because of the recent and rapid development in the field of hydroboration of unsaturated bonds catalyzed by alkali (Li, Na, K) and alkaline earth (Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) metals, we provide a detailed and updated comprehensive review that covers the synthesis, reactivity, and application of s-block metal catalysts in the hydroboration of polarized as well as unsaturated carbon-carbon bonds. Moreover, we describe the main reaction mechanisms, providing valuable insight into the reactivity of the s-block metal catalysts. Finally, we compare these s-block metal complexes with other redox-neutral catalytic systems based on p-block metals including aluminum complexes and f-block metal complexes of lanthanides and early actinides. In this review, we aim to provide a comprehensive, authoritative, and critical assessment of the state of the art within this highly interesting research area.

Abstract
The synthesis of calcium complexes ligated by three different chiral iminophosphonamide ligands, L-H (L=[Ph2 P{N(R)CH(CH3 )Ph}2 ]), L'-H (L'=[Ph2 P{NDipp}{N(R)CH(CH3 )Ph}]), (Dipp=2,6-i Pr2 C6 H3 ), and L''-H (L''=[Ph2 P{N(R)CH(CH3 )naph}2 ]), (naph=naphthyl) is presented. The resulting structures [L2 Ca], [L'2 Ca], and [L''2 Ca] represent the first examples of enantiopure homoleptic calcium complexes based on this type of ligands. The calcium complexes show blue-green photoluminescence (PL) in the solid state, which is especially bright at low temperatures. Whereas the emission of [L''2 Ca] is assigned to the fluorescence of naphthyl groups, the PL of [L2 Ca] and [L'2 Ca] is contributed by long-lived phosphorescence and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), with a strong variation of the PL lifetimes over the temperature range of 5-295 K. Furthermore, an excellent catalytic activity was found for these complexes in hydroboration of ketones at room temperature, although no enantioselectivity was achieved.

Abstract
We report the synthesis and reactivity of heterometallic Mg-Ni complexes with bridging hydrides. Treatment of magnesium monoalkyl complexes, which are supported by a tridentate β-diketiminato ligand bearing a pendent phosphine group, with nickel(0) reagent Ni(COD)2 (COD: 1,5-cyclooctadiene) at a molar ratio of 2:1 resulted in the formation of a heterotrimetallic hydride-bridged [Mg-Ni-Mg] complex via facile elimination of the corresponding alkenes. A heterobimetallic hydride-bridged [Mg-Ni] complex served as an intermediate species for the formation of the [Mg-Ni-Mg] complex. Computational studies revealed that the reaction was initiated by coordination of nickel to magnesium followed by an alkyl group transfer. β-H elimination at the nickel center subsequently occurred to give the heterometallic hydride-bridged complex. Density functional theory analysis also highlighted a three-center two-electron interaction for the Mg-H-Ni unit. The hydride-bridged [Mg-Ni-Mg] complex showed diverse reactivity toward unsaturated small molecules. For instance, reactions with isocyanides provided heterometallic species by coordination of isocyanides to the nickel center, with no subsequent reduction detected. Isocyanides could also be dissociated at 80 °C. In contrast, hydromagnesiation occurred upon treatment of the heterotrimetallic hydride with carbodiimides, affording C3-symmetric complexes with three heteroleptic magnesium mixed β-diketiminate/amidinate moieties. The hydride-bridged heterotrimetallic complex underwent dehydrogenation reaction with phenyl acetylene to produce an acetylide-bridged [Mg-Ni-Mg] complex.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterisation of a series of magnesium complexes bearing sterically demanding amidinate ligands is reported; this includes magneisum amides (1a and 1b), hydrides (3a and 3b) and alkyl complexes (2b). The solid and solution state behaviour of the complexes has been investigated using single crystal X-ray diffraction and NMR spectroscopy, revealing the magnesium hydrides to exist as dimers in the solid state, dispite the sterically demanding ligand systems and showing a degree of monomeric character in solution. The stoichiometric and catalytic activity of the amidinate complexes were investigated, with the complexes found to efficiently mediate both the hydroamination of N,N'-diisopropylcarbodiimide and the Tishchenko reaction. The metal hydrides are highly reactive towards coordinating substrates, showing a significant increase in catalytic rate compared with more ubiquitous β-diketiminate magnesium hydrides.

Abstract
Hydroboration of pyridine derivatives at room temperature with earth-abundant and biocompatible magnesium catalysts ligated by phosphinimino amides is developed. Fine turnover frequency (TOF) and distinguished 1,2-regioselectivity have been achieved. The exclusive chemoselective carbonyl hydroboration happens with competitive TOF. A HBpin assisted mechanism is deduced by the reaction rate law, activation parameters, and kinetic isotope effect (KIE) in combination with DFT calculations. To our knowledge, this is the first example of pyridine 1,2-dearomatization by Mg-based catalysts.

Abstract
A new reduction of carbamates to N-methyl amines is presented. The magnesium-catalyzed reduction reaction allows the conversion of cyclic and linear carbamates, including N-Boc protected amines, into the corresponding N-methyl amines and amino alcohols which are of significant interest due to their presence in many biologically active molecules. Furthermore, the reduction can be extended to the formation of N-trideuteromethyl labeled amines.

Abstract
An efficient transition-metal-free protocol for the hydroboration of aldehydes and ketones (reduction) was developed. The hydroboration of a wide range of aldehydes and ketones with pinacolborane (HBpin) under the K2CO3 catalyst has been studied. The reaction system is practical and reliable and proceeds under extremely mild and operationally simple conditions. No prior preparation of the complex metal catalyst was required, and hydroboration occurred stoichiometrically. Further, the chemoselective reduction of aldehydes over ketones was carried out. Moreover, we demonstrated the use of K2CO3 as an efficient catalyst for the hydroboration of alkenes. The operational simplicity, inexpensive and transition-metal-free catalyst, and the applicability to gram-scale synthesis strengthen its potential applications for hydroboration (reduction) at an industrial scale.

Abstract
Herein, we present a facile method for deoxygenative hydroboration of a broad range of carboxylic acids under very mild conditions. The most striking feature of this attractive hydroboration is that this elusive and challenging transformation was realized without catalyst and solvent. The investigation of solvent effect showed that tetrahydrofuran was also suitable for this kind of reaction. Moreover, a successful gram-scale trial may provide a very promising toolkit for carboxylic acid reduction at a large scale.

Abstract
A magnesium-catalyzed hydroboration of alkynes providing good yields and selectivities for a wide range of terminal and symmetrical and unsymmetrical internal alkynes has been developed. The compatibility with many functional groups makes this magnesium catalyzed procedure attractive for late stage functionalization. Experimental mechanistic investigations and DFT calculations reveal insights into the reaction mechanism of the magnesium catalyzed protocol.
