The Propargyl Rearrangement to Functionalised Allyl-Boron and Borocation Compounds

The [(NHC)B(H)C6 F5 ]+ Cations and Their [B](H)-CO Borane Carbonyls

Hydride abstraction from the heterocyclic carbene borane adducts (NHC)BH₂ C₆ F₅ (NHC: IMes or IMe₄ ) gave the B-H containing [(NHC)B(H)C₆ F₅ ]⁺ borenium cations. They added carbon monoxide to give the respective [(NHC)B(H)(C₆ F₅ )CO]⁺ boron carbonyl cations. Carbon nucleophiles add to the boron carbonyl to give [B](H) acyls. Hydride reduced the [B]CO cation to hydroxymethylborane derivatives.

Lewis Acid Catalyzed Transfer Hydromethallylation for the Construction of Quaternary Carbon Centers

The design and gram-scale synthesis of a cyclohexa-1,4-diene-based surrogate of isobutene gas is reported. Using the highly electron-deficient Lewis acid B(C6 F5 )3 , application of this surrogate in the hydromethallylation of electron-rich styrene derivatives provided sterically congested quaternary carbon centers. The reaction proceeds by C(sp3 )-C(sp3 ) bond formation at a tertiary carbenium ion that is generated by alkene protonation. The possibility of two concurrent mechanisms is proposed on the basis of mechanistic experiments using a deuterated surrogate.

B(C6F5)3-catalyzed dehydrogenative cyclization of N-tosylhydrazones and anilines via a Lewis adduct: a combined experimental and computational investigation

Tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane-catalyzed dehydrogenative-cyclization of N-tosylhydrazones with aromatic amines has been disclosed. This metal-free catalytic protocol is compatible with a range of functional groups to provide both symmetrical and unsymmetrical 3,4,5-triaryl-1,2,4-triazoles. Mechanistic experiments and density functional theory (DFT) studies suggest an initial Lewis adduct formation of N-tosylhydrazone with B(C6F5)3 followed by sequential intermolecular amination of the borane adduct with aniline, intramolecular cyclization and frustrated Lewis pair (FLP)-catalyzed dehydrogenation for the generation of substituted 1,2,4-triazoles.

Metallomimetic Chemistry of Boron

The study of main-group molecules that behave and react similarly to transition-metal (TM) complexes has attracted significant interest in recent decades. Most notably, the attractive idea of replacing the all-too-often rare and costly metals from catalysis has motivated efforts to develop main-group-element-mediated reactions. Main-group elements, however, lack the electronic flexibility of TM complexes that arises from combinations of empty and filled d orbitals and that seem ideally suited to bind and activate many substrates. In this review, we look at boron, an element that despite its nonmetal nature, low atomic weight, and relative redox staticity has achieved great milestones in terms of TM-like reactivity. We show how in interelement cooperative systems, diboron molecules, and hypovalent complexes the fifth element can acquire a truly metallomimetic character. As we discuss, this character is powerfully demonstrated by the reactivity of boron-based molecules with H₂, CO, alkynes, alkenes and even with N₂.

Computational and experimental investigation on the BCl3 promoted intramolecular amination of alkenes and alkynes

The BCl₃ promoted aminoboration of alkenes and alkynes was investigated both computationally and experimentally, leading to the discovery of a metal-free hydroamination of alkynes.

Chemoselective Preparation of 1-Iodoalkynes, 1,2-Diiodoalkenes, and 1,1,2-Triiodoalkenes Based on the Oxidative Iodination of Terminal Alkynes

We present the chemoselective synthesis of 1-(iodoethynyl)-4-methylbenzene, 1-(1,2-diiodovinyl)-4-methylbenzene, and 1-methyl-4-(1,2,2-triiodovinyl)benzene as representative examples for the practical chemoselective preparation of 1-iodoalkynes, 1,2-diiodoalkenes, and 1,1,2-triiodoalkenes from the chemoselective iodination of terminal alkynes mediated by hypervalent-iodine reagents. The chemoselectivity was confirmed by using p-tolylethyne as a model substrate to screen a variety of iodine sources and/or the hypervalent-iodine reagents. A combination of tetrabutylammonium iodide (TBAI) and (diacetoxyiodo)benzene (PIDA) selectively generates 1-iodoalkynes, while a combination of KI and PIDA generates 1,2-diiodoalkenes. A one-pot synthesis based on both TBAI-PIDA and KI-PIDA yields the corresponding 1,1,2-triiodoalkenes. These protocols were subsequently applied to the synthesis of synthetically important aromatic and aliphatic 1-iodoalkynes, 1,2-diiodoalkenes, and 1,1,2-triiodoalkenes, which were obtained in good yield with excellent chemoselectivity.

Divergent Elementoboration: 1,3-Haloboration versus 1,1-Carboboration of Propargyl Esters

This work showcases the 1,3-haloboration reaction of alkynes in which boron and chlorine add to propargyl systems in a proposed sequential oxazoliumborate formation with subsequent ring-opening and chloride migration. In addition, the functionalization of these propargyl esters with dimethyl groups in the propargylic position leads to stark differences in reactivity whereby a formal 1,1-carboboration prevails to give the 2,2-dichloro-3,4-dihydrodioxaborinine products as an intramolecular chelate. Density functional theory calculations are used to rationalize the distinct carboboration and haloboration pathways. Significantly, this method represents a metal-free route to highly functionalized compounds in a single step to give structurally complex products.

Formation of Reactive π-Conjugated Frustrated N/B Pairs by Borane-Induced Propargyl Amine Rearrangement

N-Propargyltetramethylpiperidine reacts with a series of trans-alkenyl-B(C₆F₅)₂ compounds to give the substituted alkenyl-bridged frustrated N/B Lewis pairs 5. Their structures and spectroscopic features indicate a pronounced participation of the mesomeric s-trans-iminium/borata-alkene resonance form. The compounds are thought to be formed in a stepwise addition/rearrangement process which is initiated by a trans-1,2-amine/borane FLP addition to the carbon-carbon triple bond to generate a reactive zwitterionic aziridinium/alkenylborate intermediate. Subsequent alkenylborate attack leads to opening of the activated three-membered heterocycle with clean formation of the products 5a-c. Treatment of the propargyl-TMP substrate with B(C₆F₅)₃ gave a stable example of such an aziridinium/borate betaine, which was isolated and amply characterized. The products 5a-c are active N/B FLPs. They split dihydrogen heterolytically under mild conditions to give the respective NH⁺/BH^- products 9a-c. These contain Z-configurated core C═C double bonds, which indicates rotational equilibration around the central C-C bond of 5a-c during this reaction. Structural and chemical features of the 5c system were analyzed by DFT calculations.

B(C6F5)3: a robust catalyst for the activation of CO2 and dimethylamine borane for the N-formylation reactions

In this work, B(C₆F₅)₃ is utilized as an organocatalyst for the transition-metal-free N-formylation of amines using carbon dioxide (CO₂) as a C1 source and dimethylamine borane (Me₂NH·BH₃) as a green hydrogen transfer source at 80 °C.

N-Heterocycle-Ligated Borocations as Highly Tunable Carbon Lewis Acids

The relative (to BEt₃) hydride ion affinity (HIA) of a series of acridine borenium salts has been calculated, with some HIAs found to be similar to that for [Ph₃C]⁺. The HIA at the acridine C9 position is controlled by both acridine and the boron substituents, the latter presumably affecting the strength of the B=N bond in the acridane-BY₂ products from hydride transfer. Through a range of hydride abstraction benchmarking reactions against organic hydride donors the experimental HIA of [F₅acr-BCat]⁺ (cat = catechol, F₅acr = 1,2,3,4,7-pentafluoroacridine) has been confirmed to be extremely high and closely comparable to that of [Ph₃C]⁺. The high HIA of [F₅acr-BCat]⁺ enables H₂ and alkene activation in a FLP with 2,6-di-tert-butylpyridine. Finally, the HIA of pyridine and quinoline borenium cations has been determined, with the HIA at boron in [PinB(amine)]⁺ (pin = pinacol, amine = pyridine or quinoline) found to be relatively low. This enabled the hydroboration of pyridine and quinoline by HBPin to be achieved through the addition of 5–10 mol % of bench-stable cationic carbon Lewis acids such as 2-phenyl-N,N-dimethylimidazolium salts.

Hypervalent Iodine Mediated Chemoselective Iodination of Alkynes

Reported herein are practical approaches for the chemoselective mono-, di-, and tri-iodination of alkynes based on efficient oxidative iodinations catalyzed by hypervalent iodine reagents. The reaction conditions were systematically optimized by altering the iodine source and/or the hypervalent iodine reagent system. The tetrabutylammonium iodide (TBAI)/(diacetoxyiodo)benzene (PIDA) system is specific for monoiodination, while the KI/PIDA system results in di-iodination. Combining the TBAI/PIDA and KI/PIDA systems in one pot provided the corresponding tri-iodination products efficiently. These reaction conditions can be applied to the synthetically important iodination of aromatic and aliphatic alkynes, which was accomplished in good yield (up to 99%) and excellent chemoselectivity. These synthetic methods can also be applied to the efficient chemoselective synthesis of iodoalkyne derivatives, intermediates, and related biologically active compounds.

BCl3 -Induced Annulative Oxo- and Thioboration for the Formation of C3-Borylated Benzofurans and Benzothiophenes

BCl₃ -induced borylative cyclization of aryl-alkynes possessing ortho-EMe (E=S, O) groups represents a simple, metal-free method for the formation of C3-borylated benzothiophenes and benzofurans. The dichloro(heteroaryl)borane primary products can be protected to form synthetically ubiquitous pinacol boronate esters or used in situ in Suzuki-Miyaura cross couplings to generate 2,3-disubstituted heteroarenes from simple alkyne precursors in one pot. In a number of cases alkyne trans-haloboration occurs alongside, or instead of, borylative cyclization and the factors controlling the reaction outcome are determined.
