Visible-Light-Induced Oxidative Decarboxylative Coupling of Phenylacetic Acid Derivatives Using SF6 as an Oxidant

A visible-light-mediated decarboxylative coupling reaction of phenylacetic acid derivatives, featuring sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) as the oxidant, has been developed. This metal-free method allows for the synthesis of a series of bibenzyl derivatives and complex all-carbon skeletons, facilitating efficient utilization and degradation of the greenhouse gas SF6.

Photocatalytic Radical Cascade Dehalogenation/Carbo-cyclization/Sulfonylation Leading to Indole- and Benzofuran-Based Benzylic Sulfones

This study presents a convenient approach to the synthesis of indole- and benzofuran-based benzylic sulfones using unactivated alkynes containing aryl iodides and sodium sulfinates under visible light irradiation. The procedure involves a sequential series of dehalogenation, carbo-cyclization, and radical sulfonylation. Plausible insights into the reaction mechanism are derived from control experiments, leading to the proposal of a radical cascade reaction pathway.

Effective Activation of Strong C-Cl Bonds for Highly Selective Photosynthesis of Bibenzyl via Homo-Coupling

Carbon-carbon (C-C) coupling of organic halides has been successfully achieved in homogeneous catalysis, while the limitation, e.g., the dependence on rare noble metals, complexity of the metal-ligand catalylst and the poor catalyst stability and recyclability, needs to be tackled for a green process. The past few years have witnessed heterogeneous photocatalysis as a green and novel method for organic synthesis processes. However, the study on C-C coupling of chloride substrates is rare due to the extremely high bond energy of C-Cl bond (327 kJ mol-1 ). Here, we report a robust heterogeneous photocatalyst (Cu/ZnO) to drive the homo-coupling of benzyl chloride with high efficiency, which achieves an unprecedented high selectivity of bibenzyl (93 %) and yield rate of 92 % at room temperature. Moreover, this photocatalytic process has been validated for C-C coupling of 10 benzylic chlorides all with high yields. In addition, the excellent stability has been observed for 8 cycles of reactions. With detailed characterization and DFT calculation, the high selectivity is attributed to the enhanced adsorption of reactants, stabilization of intermediates (benzyl radicals) for the selective coupling by the Cu loading and the moderate oxidation ability of the ZnO support, besides the promoted charge separation and transfer by Cu species.

Homocoupling of benzyl pyridyl ethers via visible light-mediated deoxygenation

The photocatalytic coupling of ethers is uncommon because of the challenges in breaking C-O bonds and low selectivity. Herein, we report a visible light-mediated deoxygenation homocoupling of benzyl pyridyl ethers via their pyridium salts. This approach enables C(sp3)-O bond homolysis under mild conditions. Mechanistic experiments support the radical nature of the reaction. This method is highly compatible with electron-withdrawing groups and has potential applications for drug precursor synthesis.

Hydrodeoxygenative Coupling and Transformation of Aldehydes at a N2-Derived Tetranuclear Titanium Imide/Hydride Framework

Carbon-carbon bond formation via coupling of two organic components is among the most important chemical transformations in organic synthesis. Herein, we report an unprecedented hydrodeoxygenative coupling of aromatic aldehydes to form bibenzyls by a N₂-derived tetranuclear titanium imide/hydride complex [(Cp'Ti)₄(μ₃-NH)₂(μ-H)₄] (1; Cp' = C₅Me₄SiMe₃). Further reactions with the corresponding aldehydes under air afford hydrobenzamides together with a titanium oxo complex. Both hydride and imide ligands play an important role for the reductive coupling, hydrogenation processes, as well as the functionalization of the N₂-derived imide units without the need of sacrificial reagents. These results demonstrate that the tetranuclear titanium imide/hydride framework is not only applicable for N₂ activation and functionalization but also providing a new platform for the C-C bond formation using carbonyl compounds.

The Dark Side of Lead-Free Metal Halide Nanocrystals: Substituent-Modulated Photocatalytic Activity in Benzyl Bromide Reduction

We illustrate here the high photocatalytic activity of sustainable lead-free metal halide nanocrystals (NCs), namely, Cs₃Sb₂Br₉ NCs, in the reduction of p-substituted benzyl bromides in the absence of a cocatalyst. The electronic properties of the benzyl bromide substituents and the substrate affinity to the NC surface determine the selectivity in C-C homocoupling under visible light irradiation. This photocatalyst can be reused for at least three cycles and preserves its good performance with a turnover number of ca. 105,000.

From Styrenes to Fluorinated Benzyl Bromides: A Photoinduced Difunctionalization via Atom Transfer Radical Addition

An operationally simple and practical method is disclosed to achieve the difunctionalization of styrenes, generating fluorinated benzyl bromides via a photoinduced atom transfer radical addition process. The developed method is mild, atom-economical, cost-effective, employs very low photocatalyst loading (1000 ppm), and is highly compatible with a broad range of functional groups on styrene. The versatility of the fluorinated benzyl bromides is demonstrated through their derivatization to a variety of valuable compounds.

Light-induced electron transfer/phase migration of a redox mediator for photocatalytic C-C coupling in a biphasic solution

Photocatalytic molecular conversions that lead to value-added chemicals are of considerable interest. To achieve highly efficient photocatalytic reactions, it is equally important as it is challenging to construct systems that enable effective charge separation. Here, we demonstrate that the rational construction of a biphasic solution system with a ferrocenium/ferrocene (Fc⁺/Fc) redox couple enables efficient photocatalysis by spatial charge separation using the liquid-liquid interface. In a single-phase system, exposure of a 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) solution containing a Ru(II)- or Ir(III)-based photosensitizer, Fc, and benzyl bromide (Bn-Br) to visible-light irradiation failed to generate any product. However, the photolysis in a H₂O/DCE biphasic solution, where the compounds are initially distributed in the DCE phase, facilitated the reductive coupling of Bn-Br to dibenzyl (Bn₂) using Fc as an electron donor. The key result of this study is that Fc⁺, generated by photooxidation of Fc in the DCE phase, migrates to the aqueous phase due to the drastic change in its partition coefficient compared to that of Fc. This liquid-liquid phase migration of the mediator is essential for facilitating the reduction of Bn-Br in the DCE phase as it suppresses backward charge recombination. The co-existence of anions can further modify the driving force of phase migration of Fc⁺ depending on their hydrophilicity; the best photocatalytic activity was obtained with a turnover frequency of 79.5 h^-1 and a quantum efficiency of 0.2% for the formation of Bn₂ by adding NBu₄⁺Br^- to the biphasic solution. This study showcases a potential approach for rectifying electron transfer with suppressed charge recombination to achieve efficient photocatalysis.

A new photoactivable NO-releasing {Ru-NO}6 ruthenium nitrosyl complex with a tetradentate ligand containing aniline and pyridine moieties

A new type of photoactivable NO-releasing ruthenium nitrosyl complex, [Ru(EPBP)Cl(NO)], with a tetradentate ligand, N,N'-(ethane-1,2-diyldi-o-phenylene)-bis(pyridine-2-carboxamide) (= H₂ EPBP) was synthesized. Single crystal X-ray crystallography revealed that the complex has a distorted octahedral coordination geometry and NO is positioned at cis to Cl^- ion. NO-photolysis was observed under a white room light. The photodissociation of Ru-NO bond was identified by various techniques including X-ray crystallography, IR, UV/Vis absorption, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and NMR spectroscopies. Quantum yields for the NO-photolysis of the complex in CH₃ OH, CHCl₃ , DMSO, CH₃ CN, and CH₃ NO₂ were measured to be 0.19-0.36 with 400 (±5) nm excitation. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations were performed to understand the details of the photodissociation of the complex. The calculations suggest that the NO photolysis is most likely initiated by the electronic transition from the aniline moiety π MOs (π (aniline)) of the EPBP^2- chelating ligand to the π-antibonding MO of Ru-NO (π*(Ru-NO)). Experimental and theoretical investigations indicate that the EPBP^2- ligand provides an effective platform forming ruthenium nitrosyl complexes useful for NO-photoreleasing.

Starting from Styrene: A Unified Protocol for Hydrotrifluoromethylation of Diversified Alkenes

In contrast with unactivated alkenes, the corresponding hydrotrifluoromethylation of styrene has remained challenging due to the strong propensity of styrene for oligomerization and polymerization. On the basis of our newly developed trifluoromethylation reagent, TFSP, herein we present a general method for the hydrotrifluoromethylation of styrene under photoredox catalysis. The substrate scope was further extended to unactivated alkenes, acrylates, acrylamides, and vinyl-heteroatom-substituted alkenes. The tunability of this method was showcased via the relevant deprotonative trifluoromethylation and trifluoromethyltrifluoroethoxylation reactions.

Accessing Photoredox Transformations with an Iron(III) Photosensitizer and Green Light

Efficient excited-state electron transfer between an iron(III) photosensitizer and organic electron donors was realized with green light irradiation. This advance was enabled by the use of the previously reported iron photosensitizer, [Fe(phtmeimb)₂]⁺ (phtmeimb = {phenyl[tris(3-methyl-imidazolin-2-ylidene)]borate}, that exhibited long-lived and luminescent ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) excited states. A benchmark dehalogenation reaction was investigated with yields that exceed 90% and an enhanced stability relative to the prototypical photosensitizer [Ru(bpy)₃]²⁺. The initial catalytic step is electron transfer from an amine to the photoexcited iron sensitizer, which is shown to occur with a large cage-escape yield. For LMCT excited states, this reductive electron transfer is vectorial and may be a general advantage of Fe(III) photosensitizers. In-depth time-resolved spectroscopic methods, including transient absorption characterization from the ultraviolet to the infrared regions, provided a quantitative description of the catalytic mechanism with associated rate constants and yields.

Reactions of benzyltriphenylphosphonium salts under photoredox catalysis

The development of benzyltriphenylphosphonium salts as alkyl radical precursors using photoredox catalysis is described. Depending on substituents, the benzylic radicals may couple to form C-C bonds or abstract a hydrogen atom to form C-H bonds. A natural product, brittonin A, was also synthesized using this method.

Synthesis of Dibenzyls by Nickel-Catalyzed Homocoupling of Benzyl Alcohols

Dibenzyls are essential building blocks that are widely used in organic synthesis, and they are typically prepared by the homocoupling of halides, organometallics, and ethers. Herein, we report an approach to this class of compounds using alcohols, which are more stable and readily available. The reaction proceeds via nickel-catalyzed and dimethyl oxalate assisted dynamic kinetic homocoupling of benzyl alcohols. Both primary and secondary alcohols are tolerated.

Bioinspired Photoredox Benzylation of Quinones

3-Benzylmenadiones were obtained in good yield by using a blue-light-induced photoredox process in the presence of Fe(III), oxygen, and γ-terpinene acting as a hydrogen-atom transfer agent. This methodology is compatible with a wide variety of diversely substituted 1,4-naphthoquinones as well as various cheap, readily available benzyl bromides with excellent functional group tolerance. The benzylation mechanism was investigated and supports a three-step radical cascade with the key involvement of the photogenerated superoxide anion radical.

Highly Regio- and Enantioselective Reductive Coupling of Alkynes and Aldehydes via Photoredox Cobalt Dual Catalysis

A Co-catalyzed highly regio- and enantioselective reductive coupling of alkynes and aldehydes has been developed under visible light photoredox dual catalysis. A variety of enantioenriched allylic alcohols have been obtained by using unsymmetrical internal alkynes and commercially available catalyst, chiral ligand, and reagents. It is noteworthy that this approach has considerable advantages, such as excellent regio- (>95:5 for >40 examples), stereo- (up to >95:5 E/Z), and enantioselectivity (92-99% ee, >35 examples) control, mild reaction conditions, broad substrate scope, and good functional group compatibility, making it a great improvement to enantioselective alkyne-aldehyde reductive coupling reactions.

Ni-Catalyzed Iterative Alkyl Transfer from Nitrogen Enabled by the In Situ Methylation of Tertiary Amines

Current methods to achieve transition-metal-catalyzed alkyl carbon-nitrogen (C-N) bond cleavage require the preformation of ammonium, pyridinium, or sulfonamide derivatives from the corresponding alkyl amines. These activated substrates permit C-N bond cleavage, and their resultant intermediates can be intercepted to affect carbon-carbon bond-forming transforms. Here, we report the combination of in situ amine methylation and Ni-catalyzed benzalkyl C-N bond cleavage under reductive conditions. This method permits iterative alkyl group transfer from tertiary amines and demonstrates a deaminative strategy for the construction of Csp³-Csp³ bonds. We demonstrate PO(OMe)₃ (trimethylphosphate) to be a Ni-compatible methylation reagent for the in situ conversion of trialkyl amines into tetraalkylammonium salts. Single, double, and triple benzalkyl group transfers can all be achieved from the appropriately substituted tertiary amines. Transformations developed herein proceed via recurring events: the in situ methylation of tertiary amines by PO(OMe)₃, Ni-catalyzed C-N bond cleavage, and concurrent Csp³-Csp³ bond formation.

Luminescent tungsten(vi) complexes as photocatalysts for light-driven C-C and C-B bond formation reactions

The realization of photocatalysis for practical synthetic application hinges on the development of inexpensive photocatalysts which can be prepared on a large scale. Herein an air-stable, visible-light-absorbing photoluminescent tungsten(vi) complex which can be conveniently prepared at the gram-scale is described. This complex could catalyse photochemical organic transformation reactions including borylation of aryl halides, such as aryl chloride, reductive coupling of benzyl bromides for C-C bond formation, reductive coupling of phenacyl bromides, and decarboxylative coupling of redox-active esters of alkyl carboxylic acid with high product yields and broad functional group tolerance.

Distinctive reactivity of N-benzylidene-[1,1'-biphenyl]-2-amines under photoredox conditions

A simple photocatalytic method was developed for the synthesis of unsymmetrical 1,2-diamines by the unprecedented reductive coupling of N-benzylidene-[1,1'-biphenyl]-2-amines with an aliphatic amine. The presence of a phenyl substituent in the aniline moiety of the substrate was critical for the reactivity. The reaction proceeded via radical–radical cross-coupling of α-amino radicals generated by proton-coupled single-electron transfer in the presence of an Ir photocatalyst. On the other hand, symmetrical 1,2-diamines were selectively produced from the same starting materials by the judicious choice of the reaction conditions, showcasing the distinct reactivity of N-benzylidene-[1,1'-biphenyl]-2-amines. The developed method can be employed for the synthesis of various bulky vicinal diamines, which are potential ligands in stereoselective synthesis.

Visible-Light-Driven Intermolecular Reductive Ene-Yne Coupling by Iridium/Cobalt Dual Catalysis for C(sp3 )-C(sp2 ) Bond Formation

A new methodology to form C(sp3 )-C(sp2 ) bonds by visible-light-driven intermolecular reductive ene-yne coupling has been successfully developed. The process relies on the ability of the Hantzsch ester to contribute in both SET and HAT processes through a unified cobalt and iridium catalytic system. This procedure avoids the use of stoichiometric amounts of reducing metallic reagents, which is translated into high functional-group tolerance and atom economy.

Reactivity control of a photocatalytic system by changing the light intensity

By using simple optics such as a lens, switching between one- and two-photon driven reaction mechanisms became feasible, which allows the control over the main products of photochemical reactions.

We report a novel light-intensity dependent reactivity approach allowing us to selectively switch between triplet energy transfer and electron transfer reactions, or to regulate the redox potential available for challenging reductions. Simply by adjusting the light power density with an inexpensive lens while keeping all other parameters constant, we achieved control over one- and two-photon mechanisms, and successfully exploited our approach for lab-scale photoreactions using three substrate classes with excellent selectivities and good product yields. Specifically, our proof-of-concept study demonstrates that the irradiation intensity can be used to control (i) the available photoredox reactivity for reductive dehalogenations to selectively target either bromo- or chloro-substituted arenes, (ii) the photochemical cis–trans isomerization of olefins versus their photoreduction, and (iii) the competition between hydrogen atom abstraction and radical dimerization processes.

A metal-free visible light promoted C(sp3)-C(sp) coupling reaction of alkynyl bromides and Hantzsch esters was developed, giving internal alkynes with primary, secondary, tertiary alkyl or other functional groups in good to high yields.

A Zirconium Photosensitizer with a Long-Lived Excited State: Mechanistic Insight into Photoinduced Single-Electron Transfer

Time-resolved emission spectroscopy for the luminescent zirconium complex Zr(^MePDP)₂ (^MePDP = 2,6-bis(5-methyl-3-phenyl-1 H-pyrrol-2-yl)pyridine) revealed a long-lived excited state with a lifetime τ = 325 ± 10 μs. Computational studies using time-dependent density functional theory were conducted to identify the nature of the luminescent excited state as a mixed triplet intraligand/ligand-to-metal charge-transfer state. Stern-Volmer experiments showed a strong dependence of the quenching rate on the redox potential of the quencher indicating photoinduced single-electron transfer (SET) as the quenching pathway. Mechanistic investigations of the photocatalytic homocoupling of benzyl bromide allowed the detection of organic radical intermediates during turnover and provided further evidence for SET mediated by Zr(^MePDP)₂. Isolation of the one-electron-reduced form of the photosensitizer, [Zr(^MePDP)₂]^-, enabled studies of its electronic structure by a combination of experimental and computational techniques and confirmed its role as a strong reductant. Additionally, the role of the benzimidazolium hydride derivatives as two-electron sacrificial reductants during photoredox catalysis was investigated. In combination, the results presented in this report establish a detailed mechanistic picture of a photoredox catalytic reaction promoted by an earth-abundant early transition metal photosensitizer.
