Abstract
The interest of scientists in the carbazole core has risen steadily over the last 30 years, particularly over the last decade given its presence in several active pharmaceutical ingredients, functional materials and a wide range of biologically active natural products. The continuous development of more efficient, more (regio-)selective and "greener" methodologies to access the carbazole core is thus imperative. This review compares and evaluates synthetic strategies towards the carbazole core that have been reported since 2013, with a focus on their applicability towards the total synthesis of carbazole-containing natural products.

Abstract
A set of three donor-acceptor azahelical coumarins (DA-AHCs), namely, H-AHC, Me-AHC, and Ph-AHC, were rationally designed and synthesized, and their excited-state properties were comprehensively investigated. All three DA-AHCs are shown to display very high fluorosolvatochromic shifts as a result of significant intramolecular charge transfer in their excited states. The para-quinoidal forms of the latter apparently contribute predominantly to large dipole moments in their excited states. By virtue of the fact that these helical systems structurally incorporate a highly fluorescent coumarin dye, they exhibit high quantum yields in both solution and solid states. Indeed, their emission behaviors in the crystalline media are shown to be remarkably correlated with their respective crystal packings. Incisive analyses demonstrate (i) strengthening of hydrogen bonding in the excited state promotes quenching (H-AHC), (ii) efficient crystal packing promotes high emission (Me-AHC) by precluding deactivations via vibrational motions, and (iii) loose crystal packing contributes to excited-state deactivation to account for low quantum yields of emission (Ph-AHC).

Abstract
AbstractThe transition-metal-free total syntheses of the oxygenated carbazole natural products glycoborine, carbazomycin A and carbazomycin B are reported. The key step involves an NBS-mediated cyclobutanol ring expansion to 4-tetralones for the preparation of the tricyclic carbazole core.

Abstract
We describe the oxygenation of tertiary arylamines, and the amination of tertiary arylamines and phenols. The key step of these coupling reactions is an iron‐catalyzed oxidative C−O or C−N bond formation which generally provides the corresponding products in high yields and with excellent regioselectivity. The transformations are accomplished using hexadecafluorophthalocyanine−iron(II) (FePcF16) as catalyst in the presence of an acid or a base additive and require only ambient air as sole oxidant.

Abstract
Carbazoles are widely exploited for their interesting photophysical and electronic properties, however bay (4,5-) functionalization is challenging, and previously inaccessible through carbazole C-H activation. We report a simple methodology which introduces a range of versatile 4,5-functionality, enabling the wider investigation of ring annulation and close proximity effects on carbazole properties.

Abstract
We have developed a short and simple synthesis of tetranuclear palladium(II) complexes that have been structurally confirmed by X-ray analysis. These complexes were formed in about 30 % overall yield by spontaneous metalation of dimethylaminoarene derivatives and exhibit a high stability. We have studied the utility of the tetranuclear palladium(II) complexes as precatalysts for Mizoroki-Heck and Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions. Our novel complexes show excellent catalytic activities with high turnover numbers (TON) and high turnover frequencies (TOF) (e.g., for the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction: TON up to 538000 and TOF up to 23400 h-1 at room temperature).
