Abstract
Alkynes are important in organic synthesis. This review mainly focuses on recent advances (2013-2023) on alkynes with C-S bond formation, based on more than 30 types of sulfur reagents. The reactions of alkynes with various sulfur-containing compounds including RSSR (disulfides), RSH (thiols), S8 (elemental sulphur), alkynyl thioethers, RSCN, AgSCF3, K2S, Na2S, dithiane, RSCl, NFSI, RNCS, EtOCS2K, thiocarbamate, RSONH2, thiourea, sulfoxide, RSO2N3, CS2, RSO2NH2, RSO2NHNH2, RSO2Cl, RSO2Oar, RSO2SR', DABCO·(SO2)2, Na2S2O5, K2S2O5, RSO2H, RSO2Na and related compounds are discussed. Diverse mechanisms such as radical, electrophilic/nucleophilic addition, rearrangement, C-C bond cleavage, and CuAAC are discussed. The content is organized by substrates and reactivity patterns. We hope it will help in future research in this area.

Abstract
![]()
An effective visible-light-promoted
iridium(III)-catalyzed hydrogen
production from N-heterocycles is described. A single iridium complex
constitutes the photocatalytic system playing a dual task, harvesting
visible-light and facilitating C–H cleavage and H2 formation at room temperature and without additives. The presence
of a chelating C–N ligand combining a mesoionic carbene ligand
along with an amido functionality in the IrIII complex
is essential to attain the photocatalytic transformation. Furthermore,
the IrIII complex is also an efficient catalyst for the
thermal reverse process under mild conditions, positioning itself
as a proficient candidate for liquid organic hydrogen carrier technologies
(LOHCs). Mechanistic studies support a light-induced formation of
H2 from the Ir–H intermediate as the operating mode
of the iridium complex.

Abstract
An efficient approach via catalytic electrophilic thiocarbocyclization of allenes to construct indene-based sulfides with excellent regioselectivities is disclosed. The reactions were carried out at low temperatures by selenide catalysis in the presence of TMSOTf. Not only electrophilic arylthio reagents but also electrophilic alkylthio reagents worked well under these conditions. Furthermore, the method could be applied to intermolecular azidothiolation of allenes.

Abstract
A metal-free Cs2CO3-promoted hydrothiolation of alkynes with aryl thioureas for stereoselective synthesis of (Z)-vinyl sulfides has been reported. Vinyl thioethers were obtained without a metal catalyst in good yields via anti-Markovnikov and cis addition. The protocol features a broad substrate scope of the starting materials, high atom economy, good yields, and exclusive stereoselectivity, showing potential synthetic value for the synthesis of a diversity of (Z)-vinyl thioethers.

Abstract
The conjugate acids of 1,2,3-triazolylidene mesoionic carbenes can be prepared in a straightforward fashion by alkylation of 1-substituted 1,2,3-triazoles. However, this becomes a much more challenging proposition when other nucleophilic centers are present, which has curtailed the development of ligands containing multiple 1,2,3-triazolylidene donors. Herein, methylation of a series of tris[(1-aryl-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methyl]amines possessing both electron-rich and electron-deficient aromatic substituents, using Me3OBF4, is shown to proceed with much higher chemoselectivity under mechanochemical conditions than when conducted in solution. This provides a means to reliably access a series of tricationic tris[4-(1,2,3-triazolium)methyl]amines in good yields. DFT calculations suggest that a potential reason for this change in regioselectivity is the difference between the background dielectric of the DCM solution versus the solid state, which is predicted to have a large effect on the relative thermodynamic driving force for alkylation of the tertiary amine center versus the triazole rings. Homoleptic silver complexes of the triazolylidene ligands derived therefrom, of formulas [Ag3(1a-d)2](X)3 (X- = BF4-, TfO-), have been isolated and fully characterized. In the case of the ligand bearing the smallest aryl substituents, 1b, argentophilic interactions yield a triangular Ag3 core. The [Ag3(1a-d)2](X)3 silver salts are viable agents for transmetalation to other transition metals, demonstrated here for cobalt. In the case of 1a, the complex [CoII(1a)(NCMe)](OTf)2 was obtained. Therein, the bulky mesityl substituents enforce a tetrahedral geometry, in which only the triazolylidene donors of 1a coordinate (i.e., it acts as a tridentate ligand). Transmetalation of the less sterically encumbered ligand 1b yields six-coordinate cobalt(III) complexes, [CoIII(1b)(Cl)(NCMe)](OTf)2 and [CoIII(1b)(NCMe)2](OTf)3, in which the ligand coordinates in a tetradentate fashion. These are the first examples of tris(1,2,3-triazolylidene) ligands containing an additional coordinating heteroatom and, more generally, of tetradentate 1,2,3-triazolylidene ligands. Crucially, we believe that the divergent chemoselectivity under mechanochemical conditions (vs conventional solution-based chemistry) demonstrated herein offers a pathway by which other challenging synthetic targets, including further multidentate carbene ligands, can be prepared in superior yields.

Abstract
Building upon previous work, the chemistry of [(η6 -p-cymene)Ru{P(OMe)2 OR}Cl2 ], (R=H or Me) has been extended with [H2 B(mbz)2 ]- (mbz=2-mercaptobenzothiazolyl) using different Ru precursors and borate ligands. As a result, a series of 1,3-N,S-chelated ruthenium borate complexes, for example, [(κ2 -N,S-L)PR3 Ru{κ3 -H,S,S'-H2 B(L)2 }], (2 a-d and 2 a'-d'; R=Ph, Cy, OMe or OPh and L=C5 H4 NS or C7 H4 NS2 ) and [Ru{κ3 -H,S,S'-H2 B(L)2 }2 ], (3: L=C5 H4 NS, 3': L=C7 H4 NS2 ) were isolated upon treatment of [(η6 -p-cymene)RuCl2 PR3 ], 1 a-d (R=Ph, Cy, OMe or OPh) with [H2 B(mp)2 ]- or [H2 B(mbz)2 ]- ligands (mp=2-mercaptopyridyl). All the Ru borate complexes, 2 a-d and 2 a'-d' are stabilized by phosphine/phosphite and hemilabile N,S-chelating ligands. Treatment of these Ru borate species, 2 a'-c' with various terminal alkynes yielded two different types of five-membered ruthenacycle species, namely [PR3 {C7 H4 S2 -(E)-N-C=CH(R')}Ru{κ3 -H,S,S'-H2 B(L)2 }], (4-4'; R=Ph and R'=CO2 Me or C6 H4 NO2 ; L=C7 H4 NS2 ) and [PR3 {C7 H4 NS-(E)-S-C=CH(R')}Ru{κ3 -H,S,S'-H2 B(L)2 }], (5-5', 6 and 7; R=Ph, Cy or OMe and R'=CO2 Me or C6 H4 NO2 ; L=C7 H4 NS2 ). All these five-membered ruthenacycle species contain an exocyclic C=C moiety, presumably formed by the insertion of a terminal alkyne into the Ru-N and Ru-S bonds. The new species have been characterized spectroscopically and the structures were further confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Theoretical studies and chemical-bonding analyses established that charge transfer occurs from phosphorus to ruthenium center following the trend PCy3 <PPh3 <P(OPh)3 <P(OMe)3 .

Abstract
Two bulky triazolium salts, namely 1-{4(24),6(10),12(16),18(22)-tetramethylenedioxy- 2,8,14,20-tetrapentylresorcin[4]arene-5-yl}-4-phenyl-3-methyl-1H-1,2,3-triazolium tetrafluoro borate (1) and 1,4-bis{4(24),6(10),12(16),18(22)-tetramethylenedioxy-2,8,14,20-tetrapentyl resorcin[4]arene-5-yl}-3-methyl-1H-1,2,3-triazolium iodide (2), have been synthesized and assessed in the palladium-catalyzed Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling of aryl chlorides, with aryl boronic acids. As a general trend, the reaction rates obtained with 1 were significantly higher (up to 5 times) than those observed for 2, this mainly reflected a sterically more accessible metal center in the catalytic intermediates formed with 1. The presence of flexible pentyl chains in these intermediates, which might sterically interact with the metal center, when the latter adopts an exo-orientation with respect to the cavity, were likely responsible for the observed good performance.

Abstract
Synthesis and coordination of 4-halo-1,2,3-triazolylidenes have been developed. These novel ligands featured the character with σ-donation at carbon and a σ-hole at the halogen. Halogen bonding was observed by single crystal X-ray diffraction in their coinage metal complexes. The electronic properties of 4-iodo-1,2,3-triazolylidene were studied by both Ir-CO frequencies of the Tolman electronic parameter (TEP) and Huynh's electronic parameter (HEP) method, which suggested similar electronic properties to those of imidazolylidenes. During HEP tests, an interesting tunability was observed when different electron donors were employed.

Abstract
Classical carbenes are usually described as neutral compounds featuring a divalent carbon with only six electrons in their valence shell. It was only in 1988 that our group prepared the first isolable example, in which the carbene center was stabilized by a push-pull effect, using a phosphino and a silyl substituent. In the last 30 years, a myriad of acyclic and cyclic push-pull and push-push carbenes, bearing different heteroatom substituents, have been isolated. Among them, the so-called N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), which include cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes (CAACs), are arguably the most popular. They have found a vast number of applications ranging from catalysis to material science, and even in medicine. In this Account, we focus on the synthesis, structure, electronic properties, coordination, and applications of a different class of stable cyclic carbenes, namely, 1 H-1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidenes. In contrast with NHCs and CAACs, these compounds have no reasonable canonical resonance forms that can be drawn showing a carbene without additional charges. According to the IUPAC, they belong to the family of mesoionic compounds and thus they are named mesoionic carbenes (MICs). In 2010, we prepared the first stable 1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene, via a CuAAC reaction, followed by alkylation of the resulting 1,2,3-triazole, and deprotonation. Later, we synthesized more robust N3-arylated counterparts from 1,3-diarylated-1 H-1,2,3-triazolium salts. Both synthetic routes can be carried out in multigram scales, making these MICS readily available. Importantly, MICs do not dimerize which contrasts with NHCs that can give the corresponding Wanzlick-type olefin. This property leads to relaxed steric requirements for their isolation; even C-unsubstituted MICs can be stored for months in the solid state at room temperature. The practicality and easily scalable syntheses of MICs allow for the preparation of polycarbenes, such as bis(1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidenes) (i-bitz), the analogues of the well-known 2,2'-bipyridines (bpy). MIC-transition metal complexes are excellent precatalysts for variety of chemical transformations, which include hydrohydrazination of alkynes, olefin metathesis, reductive formylation of amines with carbon dioxide and diphenylsilane, hydrogenation and dehydrogenation of N-heteroarenes in water, cycloisomerization of enynes, asymmetric Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling, and water oxidation (WO) reactions. Besides their catalytic applications, MIC-transition metal complexes have found applications in material sciences as exemplified by the preparation of the first iron(III) complex that is luminescent at room temperature. The peculiar properties of mesoionic triazolylidenes, combined with their enhanced stability, position them as excellent candidates to address some current challenges such as access to high-oxidation-state 3d metal complexes, the stabilization of highly reactive main group elements, the stabilization of nanoparticles, the preparation of efficient catalysts and photosensitizers based on earth-abundant transition metals, and the functionalization of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold.

Abstract
Mesoionic carbenes are a subclass of the family of N-heterocyclic carbenes that generally feature less heteroatom stabilization of the carbenic carbon and hence impart specific donor properties and reactivity schemes when coordinated to a transition metal. Therefore, mesoionic carbenes and their complexes have attracted considerable attention both from a fundamental point of view as well as for application in catalysis and beyond. As a follow-up of an earlier Chemical Reviews overview from 2009, the organometallic chemistry of N-heterocyclic carbenes with reduced heteroatom stabilization is compiled for the 2008-2017 period, including specifically the chemistry of complexes containing 1,2,3-triazolylidenes, 4-imidazolylidenes, and related 5-membered N-heterocyclic carbenes with reduced heteratom stabilization such as (is)oxazolylidenes, pyrrazolylidenes, and thiazolylidenes, as well as pyridylidenes as 6-membered N-heterocyclic carbenes with reduced heteroatom stabilization. For each ligand subclass, metalation strategies, electronic and steric properties, and applications, in particular, in metal-mediated catalysis, are compiled. Mesoionic carbenes demonstrate particularly high activity in (water) oxidation, hydrogen transfer reactions, and cyclization reactions. Unique features of these ligands are identified such as their dipolar structure, their specific donor properties, as well as stability aspects of the ligand and the complexes, which provides opportunities for further research.

Abstract
The cross-coupling reaction of alkenyl bromides with thiols catalyzed by palladium complexes derived from inexpensive dppf ligand is reported. These reactions occur under low catalyst loading and in high yields and display wide scope, including the coupling of bulky thiols and trisubstituted bromoolefins, and functional group tolerance. In addition, the thioetherification of less reactive chloroalkenes and, for the first time, alkenyl tosylates was accomplished using a catalyst generated from CyPF tBu alkylbisphosphine ligand.
