Pentagonal Bipyramid FeII Complexes: Robust Ising-Spin Units towards Heteropolynuclear Nanomagnets

Field-Induced Slow Magnetization Relaxation of a Tetrahedral S=2 FeIIS4-Containing Complex

In the work described herein, the spin relaxation properties of the mononuclear tetrahedral S=2 [Fe{(SPiPr2)2N}2] complex (1) were studied by employing static and dynamic magnetic measurements at liquid helium temperatures. In the absence of an external direct current (DC) magnetic field, 1 exhibits fast magnetization relaxation. However, in the presence of external magnetic fields of a few kOe, slow relaxation is induced as monitored by alternating current (AC) magnetic susceptibility measurements up to 10 kHz, in the temperature range 2-5 K. Analysis of the temperature dependence of the corresponding relaxation time reveals contributions by Quantum Tunnelling of Magnetization, and the Direct and Orbach processes in the magnetization relaxation mechanism of 1. The energy barrier, Ueff, of the Orbach process, as determined by this analysis, is compared with that related to the zero-field splitting parameters of 1 which were previously determined by high- frequency and -field electron paramagnetic resonance and Mössbauer spectroscopies.

Ligand- and metal-exchange reactions of robust nickel complexes with pentagonal bipyramidal structures

The coordination chemistries of transition metal complexes with pentagonal bipyramidal geometries were investigated, and the highly stable nature of a cyclic pentapyridyl ligand was disclosed. A NiCl2 complex with the pentapyridyl ligand was found to be stable toward water and acidic conditions. The stable complex underwent ligand-exchange reactions with nucleophilic reagents, and a series of pentagonal bipyramidal complexes with different apical ligands was prepared. Crystallographic analyses with the aid of theoretical calculations revealed that the complexes were constructed by electrostatic threading of a divalent linear nickel complex into the ring of the neutral, cyclic pentapyridyl, which resulted in robust water- and acid-resistant complexes with unique pentagonal bipyramidal structures. A reductive metal exchange reaction was then discovered, which enabled "linear divalent metal + electrostatic ring" formulations with different metal atoms.

Trigonal prismatic coordination geometry imparted by a macrocyclic ligand: an approach to large axial magnetic anisotropy for Co(II)

Large uniaxial magnetic anisotropy, expressed by a negative value of the axial zero-field splitting parameter D, has been achieved in a series of trigonal prismatic Co(II) complexes with the general formula [Co(L)X]Y, where L = 1,5,13,17,22-pentaazatricyclo[15.2.2.17,11]docosa-7,9,11(22)-triene, X = Cl-(1a,b), Br-(2), N3-(3), NCO-(4), NCS-(5), NCSe-(6), and Y = Cl-(1), Br-(2), NCS-(4), NCSe-(5), ClO4-(3,6). Complexes 1-6 are six-coordinate with the distorted trigonal prismatic geometry imparted by the pentadentate pyridine-/piperazine-based macrocyclic ligand L and by one monovalent coligand X-. Based on magnetic studies, all complexes 1-6 exhibit strong magnetic anisotropy with negative D-values ranging from about -20 to -41 cm-1. This variation in D (i.e. the increase of magnetic anisotropy) parallels the trend obtained by theoretical calculations and the lesser distortion of the coordination sphere with respect to the trigonal prismatic reference geometry. AC magnetic susceptibility investigations revealed field-induced single-molecule magnet behaviour for all complexes except Cl- derivative 1. The series investigated represents a rare example of Co(II) complexes with a robust trigonal prismatic geometry.

Syntheses, Structures, and Magnetic Properties of Three Cyano-Bridged FeII-MoIII Single-Molecule Magnets

Three new cyano-bridged FeII-MoIII complexes assembled from the [MoIII(CN)7]4- unit, FeII ions, and three pentadentate N3O2 ligands, namely {[Fe2H3(dapab)2][Mo(CN)6]}n·2H2O·3.5MeCN (1), [Fe(H2dapb)(H2O)][Fe(Hdapb)(H2O)][Mo(CN)6]·4H2O·3MeCN (2), and [Fe(H2dapba)(H2O)]2[Mo(CN)7]·6H2O (3) (H2dapab = 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis(2-aminobenzoylhydrazone), H2dapb = 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis(benzoylhydrazone), H2dapba = 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis(4-aminobenzoylhydrazone)), have been synthesized and characterized. Single-crystal structure analyses suggest that complex 1 contains a one-dimensional (1D) chain structure where two FeII ions are bridged by the in situ generated [MoIII(CN)6]3- unit through two trans-cyanide groups into trinuclear Fe2IIMoIII clusters that are further linked by the amino of the ligand into an infinite chain. Complexes 2 and 3 are cyano-bridged Fe2IIMoIII trinuclear clusters with two FeII ions connected by the [MoIII(CN)6]3- and [MoIII(CN)7]4- units, respectively. Direct current magnetic studies confirmed the ferromagnetic interactions between the cyano-bridged FeII and MoIII centers and significant easy-axis magnetic anisotropy for all three complexes. Furthermore, complexes 1-3 exhibit slow magnetic relaxation under a zero dc field, with relaxation barriers of 42.3, 21.6, and 14.4 K, respectively, making them the first examples of cyano-bridged FeII-MoIII single-molecule magnets.

[MII(H2dapsc)]-[Cr(CN)6] (M = Mn, Co) Chain and Trimer Complexes: Synthesis, Crystal Structure, Non-Covalent Interactions and Magnetic Properties

Four new heterometallic complexes combining [M^II(H₂dapsc)]²⁺ cations with the chelating H₂dapsc {2,6-diacetylpyridine-bis(semicarbazone)} Schiff base ligand and [Cr(CN)₆]^3- anion were synthesized: {[M^II(H₂dapsc)]Cr^III(CN)₆K(H₂O)_2.5(EtOH)_0.5}_n·1.2n(H₂O), M = Mn (1) and Co (2), {[Mn(H₂dapsc)]₂Cr(CN)₆(H₂O)₂}Cl·H₂O (3) and {[Co(H₂dapsc)]₂Cr(CN)₆(H₂O)₂}Cl·2EtOH·3H₂O (4). In all the compounds, M(II) centers are seven-coordinated by N₃O₂ atoms of H₂dapsc in the equatorial plane and N or O atoms of two apical -CN/water ligands. Crystals 1 and 2 are isostructural and contain infinite negatively charged chains of alternating [M^II(H₂dapsc)]²⁺ and [Cr^III(CN)₆]^3- units linked by CN-bridges. Compounds 3 and 4 consist of centrosymmetric positively charged trimers in which two [M^II(H₂dapsc)]²⁺ cations are bound through one [Cr^III(CN)₆]^3- anion. All structures are regulated by π-stacking of coplanar H₂dapsc moieties as well as by an extensive net of hydrogen bonding. Adjacent chains in 1 and 2 interact also by coordination bonds via a pair of K⁺ ions. The compounds containing Mn^II (1, 3) and Co^II (2, 4) show a significant difference in magnetic properties. The ac magnetic measurements revealed that complexes 1 and 3 behave as a spin glass and a field-induced single-molecule magnet, respectively, while 2 and 4 do not exhibit slow magnetic relaxation in zero and non-zero dc fields. The relationship between magnetic properties and non-covalent interactions in the structures 1-4 was traced.

Magnetic anisotropy of transition metal and lanthanide ions in pentagonal bipyramidal geometry

The magnetic anisotropy associated with a pentagonal bipyramidal (PBP) coordination sphere is examined on the basis of experimental and theoretical investigations. The origin and the characteristics of this anisotropy are discussed in relation to the electronic configuration of the metal ions. The effects of crystal field, structural distortion, and a second-coordination sphere on the observed anisotropies for transition meal and lanthanide ions are outlined. For the Ln derivatives, we focus on compounds showing SMM-like behavior (i.e. slow relaxation of their magnetization) in order to highlight the essential chemical and structural parameters for achieving strong axial anisotropy. The use of PBP complexes to impart controlled magnetic anisotropy in polynuclear species such as SMMs or SCMs is also addressed. This review of the magnetic anisotropies associated with a pentagonal bipyramidal coordination sphere for transition metal and lanthanide ions is intended to highlight some general trends that can guide chemists towards designing a compound with specific properties.

Cyano-Bridged Dy(III) and Ho(III) Complexes with Square-Wave Structure of the Chains

Four new cyano-bridged DyIII-CrIII, DyIII-FeIII, HoIII-CrIII and HoIII-FeIII bimetallic coordination polymers were synthesized by the reaction of [Ln(H2dapsc)(H2O)4](NO3)3 (Ln = Dy, Ho); H2dapsc = 2,6-diacetylpyridinebis(semicarbazone)) with K3[M(CN)6] (M = Cr, Fe) in H2O, resulting in the substitution of two water molecules in the coordination sphere of rare earth by paramagnetic tricharged hexacyanides of Fe and Cr. The complexes are isostructural and consist of alternating [Ln(H2dapsc)(H2O)2]3+ and [M(CN)6]3− units linked by bridges of two cis-cyano ligands of the anion to form square-wave chains. The ac magnetic measurements revealed that the DyCr and DyFe complexes are field-induced single molecule magnets, while their Ho analogs do not exhibit slow magnetic relaxation.

What controls the magnetic anisotropy in heptacoordinate high-spin cobalt(II) complexes? A theoretical perspective

The magnetic anisotropy of sixteen seven-coordinate high-spin Co^II complexes with O, N, Cl and I donors was investigated with state-of-the-art ab initio CASSCF/NEVPT2 calculations and compared with experimental data. Based on the nature of the equatorial and axial ligands, which were found to tune the zero-field splitting, the complexes were classified into four groups. The experimental zero-field splitting parameters D which, for the various structures are in a range of +30 to +60 cm^-1, as well as the g and E values are well reproduced. The investigation of the electronic structure shows that in these pentagonal bipyramidal complexes the donors and symmetry in the equatorial plane play an important role in the values of the axial zero-field splitting parameter D, and breaking of the horizontal plane of symmetry was found to enhance the magnitude of the D value. Although negative values of D are a desired condition for SIMs, many Co^II based SIMs with positive zero-field splitting are fundamentally important to understand the nature of magnetic anisotropy, and seven coordinate Co^II complexes with a large overall crystal field splitting might provide a way forward in this class of molecules.

Modulation of the magnetic dynamics of pentagonal-bipyramidal Co(ii) complexes by fine-tuning the coordination microenvironment

Dynamic magnetic behaviours of a series of Co(ii) SIMs with pentagonal-bipyramidal geometry have been modulated by an alteration of the ligand field effect.

A Series of Novel Pentagonal-Bipyramidal Erbium(III) Complexes with Acyclic Chelating N3O2 Schiff-Base Ligands: Synthesis, Structure, and Magnetism

A series of six seven-coordinate pentagonal-bipyramidal (PBP) erbium complexes, with acyclic pentadentate [N3O2] Schiff-base ligands, 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis-(4-methoxybenzoylhydrazone) [H2DAPMBH], or 2,6-diacethylpyridine bis(salicylhydrazone) [H4DAPS], and various apical ligands in different charge states were synthesized: [Er(DAPMBH)(C2H5OH)Cl] (1); [Er(DAPMBH)(H2O)Cl]·2C2H5OH (2); [Er(DAPMBH)(CH3OH)Cl] (3); [Er(DAPMBH)(CH3OH)(N3)] (4); [(Et3H)N]+[Er(H2DAPS)Cl2]- (5); and [(Et3H)N]+[Y0.95Er0.05(H2DAPS)Cl2]- (6). The physicochemical properties, crystal structures, and the DC and AC magnetic properties of 1-6 were studied. The AC magnetic measurements revealed that most of Compounds 1-6 are field-induced single-molecule magnets, with estimated magnetization energy barriers, Ueff ≈ 16-28 K. The experimental study of the magnetic properties was complemented by theoretical analysis based on ab initio and crystal field calculations. An experimental and theoretical study of the magnetism of 1-6 shows the subtle impact of the type and charge state of the axial ligands on the SMM properties of these complexes.

Trinuclear Cyanido-Bridged [Cr2 Fe] Complexes: To Be or not to Be a Single-Molecule Magnet, a Matter of Straightness

Trinuclear systems of formula [{Cr(L^N3O2Ph )(CN)₂ }₂ M(H₂ L^N3O2R )] (M=Mn^II and Fe^II , L^N3O2R stands for pentadentate ligands) were prepared in order to assess the influence of the bending of the apical M-N≡C linkages on the magnetic anisotropy of the Fe^II derivatives and in turn on their Single-Molecule Magnet (SMM) behaviors. The cyanido-bridged [Cr₂ M] derivatives were obtained by assembling trans-dicyanido Cr^III complex [Cr(L^N3O2Ph )(CN)₂ ]^- and divalent pentagonal bipyramid complexes [M^II (H₂ L^N3O2R )]²⁺ with various R substituents (R=NH₂ , cyclohexyl, S,S-mandelic) imparting different steric demand to the central moiety of the complexes. A comparative examination of the structural and magnetic properties showed an obvious effect of the deviation from straightness of the M-N≡C alignment on the slow relaxation of the magnetization exhibited by the [Cr₂ Fe] complexes. Theoretical calculations have highlighted important effects of the bending of the apical C-N-Fe linkages on both the magnetic anisotropy of the Fe^II center and the exchange interactions with the Cr^III units.

A rare isostructural series of 3d-4f cyanido-bridged heterometallic squares obtained by assembling [FeIII{HB(pz)3}(CN)3]- and LnIII ions: synthesis, X-ray structure and cryomagnetic study

A new series of cyanido-bridged {Fe^IIILn^III}₂ neutral molecular squares of general formula [Fe{HB(pz)₃}(CN)(μ-CN)₂Ln(NO₃)₂(pyim)(Ph₃PO)]₂·2CH₃CN [Ln = Ce (1), Pr (2), Nd (3), Gd (4), Tb (5), Dy (6) and Er (7); {HB(pz)₃}^- = hydrotris(pyrazolyl)borate, pyim = 2-(1H-imidazol-2-yl)pyridine and Ph₃PO = triphenylphosphine oxide] were obtained by reacting the low-spin [Fe{HB(pz)₃}(CN)₃]^- species with the preformed [Ln^III(pyim)(NO₃)₂(pyim)(Ph₃PO)]⁺ complex anions (generated in situ by mixing the nitrate salt of each Ln(III) ion with pyim and Ph₃PO molecules). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies show that 1-7 are isostructural compounds that crystallize in the triclinic P1̄ space group. Their crystal structures consist of centrosymmetric cyanido-bridged {Fe^IIILn^III}₂ molecular squares where two [Fe{HB(pz)₃}(CN)₃]^- units adopt bis-monodentate coordination modes towards two [Ln^III(pyim)(NO₃)₂(pyim)(Ph₃PO)]⁺ moieties. The cis-oriented convergent sites from both low-spin Fe^III and Ln^III fragments form a quasi square-shaped molecule in which the 3d and 4f ions alternatively occupy the corners of the square. Both Fe^III ions show a distorted octahedral surrounding (C_3v symmetry), whereas the Ln^III ions exhibit a distorted muffin-like geometry (C_s symmetry) in 1-7. The intramolecular Fe^III⋯Ln^III distances across the two cyanido-bridges range from ca. 5.48/5.46 up to ca. 5.58/5.61 Å. The molecular squares in 1-7 are interlinked through hydrogen bonds, weak π⋯π stacking and very weak C-H⋯π type interactions into three-dimensional supramolecular networks. The analysis of the solid-state direct-current (dc) magnetic susceptibility data of 1-7 in the temperature range 1.9-300 K reveals the occurrence of weak intra- and intermolecular antiferromagnetic interactions. The small intramolecular antiferromagnetic couplings in 4 compare well with those previously reported for parent systems. Although the coexistence of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) of the low-spin iron(III) and lanthanide(III) ions in the remaining compounds together with the ligand field effects mask the visualization and make difficult the evaluation of the possible magnetic interactions in them, we were able to do it through a SOC model applied on exact or effective Hamiltonians. Frequency-dependent alternating current magnetic susceptibility signals in the temperature range 2.0-9.0 K under zero and non-zero static fields were observed for 5-7 which indicate slow magnetic relaxation (SMM) behavior. The usual absence of χ''_M maxima moved us to estimate their energy barriers through ln(χ''_M/ χ'_M) vs. 1/T plots, obtaining values from 25 to 40 cm^-1.

New Cyanido-Bridged Heterometallic 3d-4f 1D Coordination Polymers: Synthesis, Crystal Structures and Magnetic Properties

Three new 1D cyanido-bridged 3d-4f coordination polymers, {[Gd(L)(H2O)2Fe(CN)6]·H2O}n (1GdFe), {[Dy(L)(H2O)2Fe(CN)6]·3H2O}n (2DyFe), and {[Dy(L)(H2O)2Co(CN)6]·H2O}n (3DyCo), were assembled following the building-block approach (L = pentadentate bis-semicarbazone ligand resulting from the condensation reaction between 2,6-diacetyl-pyridine and semicarbazide). The crystal structures consist of crenel-like LnIII-MIII alternate chains, with the LnIII ions connected by the hexacyanido metalloligands through two cis cyanido groups. The magnetic properties of the three complexes have been investigated. Field-induced slow relaxation of the magnetization was observed for compounds 2DyFe and 3DyCo. Compound 3DyCo is a new example of chain of Single Ion Magnets.

Hepta-coordinated Ni(II) assemblies - structure and magnetic studies

Two mononuclear complexes [Ni(dapsc)(H2O)2]Cl(NO3)·H2O (1) and [Ni(dapsc)(NCS)2] (2), and a bimetallic CN-bridged trinuclear molecule [NiII(dapsc)(H2O)]2[WIV(CN)8]·11H2O (3) (dapsc = 2,6-diacetylpyridine-bis(semicarbazone)) were synthesised and characterised in terms of structure and magnetic properties. All three compounds contain Ni(ii) ions in a pentagonal bipyramid coordination geometry afforded by the equatorial pentadentate ligand (dapsc) and two O- or N-donating axial ligands. The compounds differ in the relative arrangement of the complexes, intermolecular interactions and distortion from the ideal coordination geometry. The high-field EPR and magnetometric studies show large anisotropy of the Ni(ii) centres with the D parameters in the range of -10.5 to -21.2 cm-1 and negligible antiferromagnetic interactions. The easy-axis magnetic anisotropies of 1-3 were reproduced by ab initio CASSCF/NEVPT2 calculations. The ground states consist mainly of the |MS = |±1 states, which is consistent with the fact that no out-of-phase signal can be detected in the AC magnetic susceptibility measurements.

Crystal Engineering of Schiff Base Zn(II) and Cd(II) Homo- and Zn(II)M(II) (M = Mn or Cd) Heterometallic Coordination Polymers and Their Ability to Accommodate Solvent Guest Molecules

Based on solvothermal synthesis, self-assembly of the heptadentate 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis(nicotinoylhydrazone) Schiff base ligand (H₂L) and Zn(II) and/or Cd(II) salts has led to the formation of three homometallic [CdL]_n (1), {[CdL]∙0.5dmf∙H₂O}_n (2) and {[ZnL]∙0.5dmf∙1.5H₂O}_n (3), as well as two heterometallic {[Zn_0.75Cd_1.25L₂]∙dmf∙0.5H₂O}_n (4) and {[MnZnL₂]∙dmf∙3H₂O}_n coordination polymers. Compound 1 represents a 1D chain, whereas 2-5 are isostructural and isomorphous two-dimensional structures. The entire series was characterized by IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, single-crystal X-ray diffraction and emission measurements. 2D coordination polymers accommodate water and dmf molecules in their cage-shaped interlayer spaces, which are released when the samples are heated. Thus, three solvated crystals were degassed at two temperatures and their photoluminescent and adsorption-desorption properties were recorded in order to validate this assumption. Solvent-free samples reveal an increase in volume pore, adsorption specific surface area and photoluminescence with regard to synthesized crystals.

Evidence of protonation induced intra-molecular metal-to-metal charge transfer in a highly symmetric cyanido bridged {Fe2Ni2} molecular square

The possibility to induce intra-molecular metal-to-metal charge transfer in a cyanido bridged tetranuclear square shaped {Fe₂Ni₂} complex by employing protonation as an external stimulant is explored. Two cyanido bridged square shaped tetranuclear complexes, [{Ni(TPA)(μ₂-NC)₂Ni(CN)₂}₂]·4H₂O (2) and [{Ni(TPA)(μ₂-NC)₂Fe(bbp)(CN)}₂]·10H₂O (3) [TPA = tris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-ylmethyl)amine and H₂bbp = bis(2-benzimidazolyl)pyridine], are synthesized and characterized. Low temperature magnetic measurements reveal that complex 3 has dominant ferromagnetic interactions between low-spin Fe^III (S = 1/2) and high-spin Ni^II (S = 1) ions. UV-visible spectrophotometric measurements and electrochemical studies establish that reversible intra-molecular metal-to-metal electron transfer can be triggered in 3 upon the addition of either an acid or a base.

Accessing water processable cyanido bridged chiral heterobimetallic Co(ii)-Fe(iii) one dimensional network

A water processable cyanido bridged extended chiral heterobimetallic Co(ii)-Fe(iii) network is assembled. The unusual water processability of the coordination polymer originates from dangling hydrophilic substituents. The present approach offers a simple route to impart solution processability to cyanido bridged molecular magnetic materials.

Cyano-bridged polynuclear coordination compounds derived from paramagnetic [Mn(H2daptsc)]2+ and photochromic [Fe(CN)5NO]2− building blocks

Metal complexes with H₂daptsc ligand were first used as building blocks to create polynuclear multifunctional materials.

Tuning of the phase transition between site selective SCO and intermetallic ET in trimetallic magnetic cyanido-bridged clusters

A series of crystalline phases composed of trimetallic 3d-5d-5d' {Fe₉[Re(CN)₈]_6-x[W(CN)₈]_x(MeOH)₂₄}·yMeOH (x = 1 (1), 2 (2), 3 (3), 4 (4) and 5 (5); y = 10-15) clusters were obtained by altering the octacyanidometalate composition. The temperature dependent studies involving SC XRD, SQUID magnetic measurements, IR spectroscopy and ⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy revealed reversible phase transition with the retention of single crystal character in each congener. The transition was assisted by reversible spin-crossover (SCO) ^HSFe^II↔^LSFe^II transition at the central Fe1(ii) site for Fe₉Re₅W₁ (1), Fe₉Re₄W₂ (2), Fe₉Re₃W₃ (3) and Fe₉Re₂W₄ (4). In contrast, the tungsten-rich congener Fe₉Re₁W₅ (5) exhibited nontrivial behavior with the SCO transition being stopped halfway through the cooling process, to be completed with single electron transfer (ET) from the external Fe2(ii) center towards one of the neighboring W(v) sites. The critical temperature T_c of SCO has been systematically increased from 193 K (1) to 247 K (4). All experimental data indicate the domination of the Fe(ii)-W(v) valence states in all crystals 1-5, however, with increasing quantity of [W(CN)₈]^3- (and decreasing quantity of [Re(CN)₈]^3-), the valence equilibrium Fe(ii)-W(v) ↔ Fe(iii)-W(iv) was systematically shifted to the right, starting from congener 3. The overall electronic configuration at low temperatures and variable amounts and location of spin carriers along the whole series suggest the remarkable competition between magnetic super-exchange Fe(ii)-CN-W(v) interactions and intermolecular interactions. The observed behavior is in line with the information collected previously for the bimetallic congeners Fe₉Re₆ and Fe₉W₆, to shed light on the role of the mixed tri-metallic composition in changing the properties observed for the relevant bimetallic cyanido-bridged skeletons.

The first pentagonal-bipyramidal vanadium(III) complexes with a Schiff-base N3O2 pentadentate ligand: synthesis, structure and magnetic properties

A series of three mononuclear pentagonal-bipyramidal V(iii) complexes with the equatorial pentadentate N3O2 ligand (2,6-diacethylpyridinebis(benzoylhydrazone), H2DAPBH) in the different charge states (H2DAPBH0, HDAPBH1-, DAPBH2-) and various apical ligands (Cl-, CH3OH, SCN-) were synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically: [V(H2DAPBH)Cl2]Cl·C2H5OH (1), [V(HDAPBH)(NCS)2]·0.5CH3CN·0.5CH3OH (2) and [V(DAPBH)(CH3OH)2]Cl·CH3OH (3). All three complexes reveal paramagnetic behavior, resulting from isolated S = 1 spins with positive zero-field splitting energy expected for the high-spin ground state of the V3+ (3d2) ion in a PBP coordination. Detailed high-field EPR measurements for compound 3 show that its magnetic properties are best described by using the spin Hamiltonian with the positive ZFS energy (D = +4.1 cm-1) and pronounced dimer-like antiferromagnetic spin coupling (J = -1.1 cm-1). Theoretical analysis based on superexchange calculations reveals that the long-range spin coupling between distant V3+ ions (8.65 Å) is mediated through π-stacking contacts between the planar DAPBH2- ligands of two neighboring [V(DAPBH)(CH3OH)2]+ complexes.

Role of Coordination Number and Geometry in Controlling the Magnetic Anisotropy in FeII , CoII , and NiII Single-Ion Magnets

Since the last decade, the focus in the area of single-molecule magnets (SMMs) has been shifting constructively towards the development of single-ion magnets (SIMs) based on transition metals and lanthanides. Although ground-breaking results have been witnessed for Dy^III -based SIMs, significant results have also been obtained for some mononuclear transition metal SIMs. Among others, studies based on Co^II ion are very prominent as they often exhibit high magnetic anisotropy or zero-field splitting parameters and offer a large barrier height for magnetisation reversal. Although Co^II possibly holds the record for having the largest number of zero-field SIMs known for any transition metal ion, controlling the magnetic anisotropy in these systems are is still a challenge. In addition to the modern spectroscopic techniques, theoretical studies, especially ab initio CASSCF/NEVPT2 approaches, have been used to uncover the electronic structure of various Co^II SIMs. In this article, with some selected examples, the aim is to showcase how varying the coordination number from two to eight, and the geometry around the Co^II centre alters the magnetic anisotropy. This offers some design principles for the experimentalists to target new generation SIMs based on the Co^II ion. Additionally, some important Fe^II /Fe^III and Ni^II complexes exhibiting large magnetic anisotropy and SIM properties are also discussed.

Alignment of Axial Anisotropy in a 1D Coordination Polymer shows Improved Field Induced Single Molecule Magnet Behavior over a Mononuclear Seven Coordinated FeII Complex

Herein, we report a CN-bridged alternating Fe^II -Ni^II 1D chain to ensure the alignment of axial anisotropy and improve the single molecule magnet (SMM) behavior in seven coordinated Fe^II compound. The chain was constructed from hepta coordinated Fe(II) complex as an anisotropic building unit and diamagnetic nickel tetra cyanate as a bridging ligand. The magnetic measurements show the easy-axis anisotropy of the seven coordinated Fe(II) complex and field induced SMM behavior with spin reversal energy barrier U_eff =61(2) K (42 cm^-1 ) and pre-exponential relaxation time τ₀ =1.9×10^-8  s. The detailed analysis of the relaxation dynamics discloses that the Orbach process plays an important role in slow relaxation of magnetization for this compound. Notably, this example represents a remarkable energy barrier observed in hepta coordinated Fe(II) SMMs. The ab initio calculations estimate the magnitude of axial anisotropy and show the parallel orientation of the anisotropic axis throughout the 1D polymeric chain. In addition, it is also reported that the presence of weak π accepter ligands in the distorted axial position enhance the easy-axis anisotropy.

Octacyanidometallates for multifunctional molecule-based materials

Octacyanidometallates have been successfully employed in the design of heterometallic coordination systems offering a spectacular range of desired physical properties with great potential for technological applications. The [M(CN)8]n- ions comprise a series of complexes of heavy transition metals in high oxidation states, including NbIV, MoIV/V, WIV/V, and ReV. Since the discovery of the pioneering bimetallic {MnII4[MIV(CN)8]2} and {MnII9[MV(CN)8]6} (M = Mo, W) molecules in 2000, octacyanidometallates were fruitfully explored as precursors for the construction of diverse d-d or d-f coordination clusters and frameworks which could be obtained in the crystalline form under mild synthetic conditions. The primary interest in [M(CN)8]n--based networks was focused on their application as molecule-based magnets exhibiting long-range magnetic ordering resulting from the efficient intermetallic exchange coupling mediated by cyanido bridges. However, in the last few years, octacyanidometallate-based materials proved to offer varied and remarkable functionalities, becoming efficient building blocks for the construction of molecular nanomagnets, magnetic coolers, spin transition materials, photomagnets, solvato-magnetic materials, including molecular magnetic sponges, luminescent magnets, chiral magnets and photomagnets, SHG-active magnetic materials, pyro- and ferroelectrics, ionic conductors as well as electrochemical containers. Some of these materials can be processed into the nanoscale opening the route towards the development of magnetic, optical and electronic devices. In this review, we summarise all important achievements in the field of octacyanidometallate-based functional materials, with the particular attention to the most recent advances, and present a thorough discussion on non-trivial structural and electronic features of [M(CN)8]n- ions, which are purposefully explored to introduce desired physical properties and their combinations towards advanced multifunctional materials.

Structural, magnetic, redox and theoretical characterization of seven-coordinate first-row transition metal complexes with a macrocyclic ligand containing two benzimidazolyl N-pendant arms

A structurally new heptadentate derivative of a 15-membered pyridine-based macrocycle containing two benzimidazol-2-yl-methyl N-pendant arms (L = 3,12-bis((1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)methyl)-6,9-dioxa-3,12,18-triazabicyclo[12.3.1]octadeca-1(18),14,16-triene) was synthesized and its complexes with the general formula [M(L)](ClO4)2·1.5CH3NO2 (M = MnII (1), FeII (2), CoII (3) and NiII (4)) were thoroughly investigated. X-ray crystal structures confirmed that all complexes are seven-coordinate with axially compressed pentagonal bipyramidal geometry having the largest distortion for NiII complex 4. FeII, CoII and NiII complexes 2, 3 and 4 show rather large magnetic anisotropy manifested by moderate to high obtained values of the axial zero-field splitting parameter D (7.9, 40.3, and -17.2 cm-1, respectively). Magneto-structural correlation of the FeII, CoII and NiII complexes with L and with previously studied structurally similar ligands revealed a significant impact of the functional group in pendant arms on the magnetic anisotropy especially that of the CoII and NiII complexes and some recommendations concerning the ligand-field design important for anisotropy tuning in future. Furthermore, complex 3 showed field-induced single-molecule magnet behavior described with the Raman (C = 507 K-n s-1 for n = 2.58) relaxation process. The magnetic properties of the studied complexes were supported by theoretical calculations, which very well correspond with the experimental data of magnetic anisotropy. Electrochemical measurements revealed high positive redox potentials for M3+/2+ couples and high negative redox potentials for M2+/+ couples, which indicate the stabilization of the oxidation state +ii expected for the σ-donor/π-acceptor ability of benzimidazole functional groups.

A ferromagnetic Ni(ii)–Cr(iii) single-chain magnet based on pentagonal bipyramidal building units

Slow magnetic relaxation in penta-coordinate cobalt(ii) field-induced single-ion magnets (SIMs) with easy-axis magnetic anisotropy

Two penta-coordinate [Co(Lⁿ)(NCS)]ClO₄ with substituted pyridyl based bispyrazolyl ligands have been structurally characterized. The complexes show an easy-axis magnetic anisotropy, large rhombicity and slow relaxation of magnetization.

Two Four-Coordinate and Seven-Coordinate CoII Complexes Based on the Bidentate Ligand 1, 8-Naphthyridine Showing Slow Magnetic Relaxation Behavior

For a long time, the cobalt(II) complex ([Co(napy)₄ ](ClO₄ )₂ ) (napy=1, 8-naphthyridine) has been considered as an eight-coordinate complex without any structural proof. After careful considerations, two complexes [Co(napy)₂ Cl₂ ] (1) and [Co(napy)₄ ](ClO₄ )₂ (2) based on the bidentate ligand napy were synthesized and structurally characterized. X-ray single-crystal structural determination showed that the cobalt(II) center in [Co(napy)₂ Cl₂ ] (1) is four-coordinate with a tetrahedral geometry (T_d ), while [Co(napy)₄ ](ClO₄ )₂ (2) is seven-coordinate rather than eight-coordinate with a capped trigonal prism geometry (C_2v ). Direct-current (dc) magnetic data revealed that complexes 1 and 2 possess positive zero-field splitting (ZFS) parameters of 11.08 and 25.30 cm^-1 , respectively, with easy-plane magnetic anisotropy. Alternating current(ac) susceptibility measurements revealed that both complexes showed slow magnetic relaxation behaviour. Theoretical calculations demonstrated that the presence of easy-plane magnetic anisotropy (D>0) for complexes 1 and 2 is in agreement with the experimental data. Furthermore, these results pave the way to obtain four-coordinate and seven-coordinate cobalt(II) single-ion magnets (SIMs) by using a bidentate ligand.

Slow Magnetic Relaxation, Antiferromagnetic Ordering, and Metamagnetism in MnII (H2 dapsc)-FeIII (CN)6 Chain Complex with Highly Anisotropic Fe-CN-Mn Spin Coupling

Reactions of [Mn(H₂ dapsc)Cl₂ ]⋅H₂ O (dapsc=2,6- diacetylpyridine bis(semicarbazone)) with K₃ [Fe(CN)₆ ] and (PPh₄ )₃ [Fe(CN)₆ ] lead to the formation of the chain polymeric complex {[Mn(H₂ dapsc)][Fe(CN)₆ ][K(H₂ O)_3.5 ]}_n ⋅1.5n H₂ O (1) and the discrete pentanuclear complex {[Mn(H₂ dapsc)]₃ [Fe(CN)₆ ]₂ (H₂ O)₂ }⋅4 CH₃ OH⋅3.4 H₂ O (2), respectively. In the crystal structure of 1 the high-spin [Mn^II (H₂ dapsc)]²⁺ cations and low-spin hexacyanoferrate(III) anions are assembled into alternating heterometallic cyano-bridged chains. The K⁺ ions are located between the chains and are coordinated by oxygen atoms of the H₂ dapsc ligand and water molecules. The magnetic structure of 1 is built from ferrimagnetic chains, which are antiferromagnetically coupled. The complex exhibits metamagnetism and frequency-dependent ac magnetic susceptibility, indicating single-chain magnetic behavior with a Mydosh-parameter φ=0.12 and an effective energy barrier (U_eff /k_B ) of 36.0 K with τ₀ =2.34×10^-11  s for the spin relaxation. Detailed theoretical analysis showed highly anisotropic intra-chain spin coupling between [Fe^III (CN)₆ ]^3- and [Mn^II (H₂ dapsc)]²⁺ units resulting from orbital degeneracy and unquenched orbital momentum of [Fe^III (CN)₆ ]^3- complexes. The origin of the metamagnetic transition is discussed in terms of strong magnetic anisotropy and weak AF interchain spin coupling.

A Series of Field-Induced Single-Ion Magnets Based on the Seven-Coordinate Co(II) Complexes with the Pentadentate (N3O2) H2dapsc Ligand

A series of five new mononuclear pentagonal bipyramidal Co(II) complexes with the equatorial 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis(semicarbazone) ligand (H2dapsc) and various axial pseudohalide ligands (SCN, SeCN, N(CN)2, C(CN)3, and N3) was prepared and structurally characterizated: [Co(H2dapsc)(SCN)2]∙0.5C2H5OH (1), [Co(H2dapsc)(SeCN)2]∙0.5C2H5OH (2), [Co(H2dapsc)(N(CN)2)2]∙2H2O (3), [Co(H2dapsc)(C(CN)3)(H2O)](NO3)∙1.16H2O (4), and {[Co(H2dapsc)(H2O)(N3)][Co(H2dapsc)(N3)2]}N3∙4H2O (5). The combined analyses of the experimental DС and AC magnetic data of the complexes (1–5) and two other earlier described those of this family [Co(H2dapsc)(H2O)2)](NO3)2∙2H2O (6) and [Co(H2dapsc)(Cl)(H2O)]Cl∙2H2O (7), their theoretical description and the ab initio CASSCF/NEVPT2 calculations reveal large easy-plane magnetic anisotropies for all complexes (D = + 35 − 40 cm‒1). All complexes under consideration demonstrate slow magnetic relaxation with dominant Raman and direct spin–phonon processes at static magnetic field and so they belong to the class of field-induced single-ion magnets (SIMs).

Synthesis and magnetic studies of pentagonal bipyramidal metal complexes of Fe, Co and Ni

Three mononuclear metal complexes [MII(L-N3O2)(MeCN)2][BPh4]2 (M = Fe, 1; Co, 2; Ni, 3) were isolated and structurally characterized. Magnetic studies revealed uniaxial magnetic anisotropy for 1 (D = -17.1 cm-1) and 3 (D = -14.3 cm-1) and easy-plane magnetic anisotropy for 2 (D = +36.9 cm-1). Slow magnetic relaxation was observed for complexes 1 and 2 under an applied magnetic field, both of which are dominated by a Raman process.

Heterometallic MIILnIII (M = Co/Zn; Ln = Dy/Y) Complexes with Pentagonal Bipyramidal 3d Centers: Syntheses, Structures, and Magnetic Properties

We herein reported the syntheses, structures, and magnetic properties of three dinuclear heterometallic M^IILn^III complexes, namely, [M^IILn^III(H₂L)(CH₃OH)₂(NO₃)₂](NO₃)·S (M = Co, Ln = Dy, S = MeOH (1_CoDy); M = Zn, Ln = Dy, S = MeOH (2_ZnDy); M = Co, Ln = Y, S = MeNO₂ (3_CoY), H₄L = 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis[2-(semicarbazono) propionylhydrazone]. Synthesized from the predesigned multidentate ligand H₄L, which has two different coordination pockets (smaller N₃O₂ and larger N₂O₄ pockets) suitable for either a 3d or a 4f metal center, all these complexes have very similar structures, where the M^II centers possess a pentagonal bipyramidal (PBP) geometry and the Ln^III sites have a tetradecahedron geometry. Magnetic measurements on these compounds revealed the existence of weak ferromagnetic coupling between the Co²⁺ and Dy³⁺ centers and the field-induced slow magnetic relaxation of all three complexes. Furthermore, theoretical calculation on all these complexes indicates that although the change of the diamagnetic Zn²⁺ ion to the paramagnetic Co²⁺ ion only slightly modifies the local magnetic anisotropy of the Dy³⁺ ion, the weak Co-Dy magnetic interaction decreases the energy barrier. These compounds are the first systematic results of a heterometallic 3d-4f single-molecule magnet containing predesigned PBP 3d metal ions.

Two new POM-based compounds modified by lanthanide–Schiff base complexes with interesting NLO properties

Two POM-based lanthanide derivatives, namely {triaqua[2,6-diacetylpyridine bis(semicarbazone)-κ5 O,N,N′,N′′,O′]terbium(III)}-μ-oxido-[tricosa-μ2-oxido-dodecaoxido-μ12-phosphato-dodecamolybdenum(VI)] pentahydrate (1), [Tb(C11H15N7O2)(H2O)3][PMo12O40]·5H2O, and the dysprosium(III) analogue (2), have been isolated successfully by the reaction of Keggin–POM [PMo12O40]3− (abbreviated as PMo12 ), the Ln3+ ion and the Schiff base 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis(semicarbazone) (DAPSC) ligand under hydrothermal conditions. [Ln(DAPSC)(H2O)3][PMo12O40]·5H2O is a PMo12 -supported cluster featuring a lanthanide–Schiff base complex [denoted Ln– L (Schiff base)]. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the LnIII ion is in a distorted tricapped trigonal prismatic arrangement, coordinated by six O atoms and three N atoms. Two O atoms and three N atoms are provided by one DAPSC ligand, while the additional O atoms originate from a PMo12 cluster and three water molecules. Hydrogen-bonding interactions between adjacent clusters form an interesting three-dimensional supramolecular structure. The identities of 1 and 2 were characterized by IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and powder X-ray diffraction. Interestingly, both compounds possess excellent two-photon absorption (TPA) responses to the third-order nonlinear optics (NLO) (2264 GM for 1 and 941 GM for 2), suggesting that they have potential applications in the field of nonlinear optics (NLO). To our knowledge, 1 and 2 are the first POM-based Ln– L (Schiff base) complexes showing excellent two-photon responses. Meanwhile, the electrochemical properties of both compounds were studied in detail.

Cyano-Bridged Fe(II)-Cr(III) Single-Chain Magnet Based on Pentagonal Bipyramid Units: On the Added Value of Aligned Axial Anisotropy

A cyano-bridged Fe(II)-Cr(III) single-chain magnet designed to ensure a parallel orientation of the axial anisotropy of the building units is reported. This ferromagnetic chain compound consists of a pentagonal bipyramid Fe(II) complex with Ising-type anisotropy and a dicyanide Cr(III) complex interlinked through their apical positions. It is characterized by an energy gap for the magnetization reversal of Δ_eff/ k_B = 113 K and exhibits magnetic hysteresis with a coercive field of 1400 Oe at 2 K which positions this compound among the very few examples of SCMs with spin reversal barriers above 100 K. The quite remarkable performances of this single-strand SCM are attributed to the alignment of the local anisotropy axes, which is supported by ab initio modeling. A discrete Cr₂Fe complex based on the same building units and behaving as a SMM in zero field is also reported.

Single Ion Magnets from 3d to 5f: Developments and Strategies

Single-ion magnets (SIMs), exhibiting slow magnetization relaxation in the absence of the magnetic field, originate from their single spin-carrier centre. In pursuit of high-performance magnetic properties, such as high spin-reversal barrier and high blocking temperature, various metal centres were investigated to establish SIMs, including 3d and 5d transition metal ions, 4f lanthanide ions, and 5f actinide ions, which possess unique zero-field splitting and magnetic properties. Therefore, proper ligand field is of great importance to different types of metals. In the given great breakthroughs since the first SIM, [Pc₂ Tb]^- (Pc=dianion of phthalocyanine), was reported, strategies of ligand field design have emerged. In this review, the developments of SIMs with different metal centres are summarized, as well as the possible strategies.
