Building Block Dependent Morphology Modulation of Cage Nanoparticles and Recognition of Nitroaromatics

Recent progress of porous cage materials in sample preparation, chromatographic separation, and detection

Porous cage materials with certain dimensions, sizes, shapes, and functions have been regarded as promising materials for sample preparation, chromatographic separation, and detection process. In contrast to infinite frameworks such as metal-organic frameworks or covalent organic frameworks, porous cage materials are constructed from discrete molecules containing at least one internal cavity. The well-defined cavities in porous cage materials provide opportunities for non-covalent interactions. These interactions can be programmed into the ligand design or supramolecular cage constructing using the cages as building blocks, offering various host-guest recognition with great selectivity. In this review, we desire to elucidate the fundamental principles governing the design and fabrication of porous cage materials with well-defined cavities, good solvent processability, and modifiable groups, the applications of these porous cage materials in sample preparation, chromatographic separation, and detection were discussed. The recent advantages of porous cage materials for the analysis process were summarized. We state the potential of these materials and provide an outlook for further application strategies. We expect that this review can inspire interest in the porous cage materials research area for analysis.

Pt(II)/Pd(II)-Based Metallosupramolecular Architectures as Light Harvesting Systems and their Applications

The development of artificial light-harvesting systems mimicking the natural photosynthesis method is an ever-growing field of research. Numerous systems such as polymers, metal complexes, POFs, COFs, supramolecular frameworks etc. have been fabricated to accomplish more efficient energy transfer and storage. Among them, the supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) formed by non-covalent metal-ligand interaction, have shown the capacity to not only undergo single and multistep energy migration but also to utilize the harvested energy for a wide variety of applications such as photocatalysis, tunable emissive systems, encrypted anti-counterfeiting materials, white light emitters etc. This review sheds light on the light-harvesting behavior of both the 2D metallacycles and 3D metallacages where design ingenuity has been executed to afford energy harvesting by both donor ligands as well as metal acceptors.

A Chiral [2+3] Covalent Organic Cage Based on 1,1'-Bi-2-naphthol (BINOL) Units

A [2+3] chiral covalent organic cage is produced through a dynamic covalent chemistry approach by mixing two readily available building units, viz. an enantiopure 3,3'-diformyl 2,2'-BINOL compound (A) with a triamino spacer (B). The two enantiomeric (R,R,R) and (S,S,S) forms of the cage C are formed nearly quantitatively thanks to the reversibility of the imine linkage. The X-ray diffraction analysis of cage (S,S,S)-C highlights that the six OH functions of the BINOL fragments are positioned inside the cage cavity. Upon reduction of the imine bonds of cage C, the amine cage D is obtained. The ability of the cage D to host the 1-phenylethylammonium cation (EH+) as a guest is evaluated through UV, CD and DOSY NMR studies. A higher binding constant for (R)-EH+ cation (Ka=1.7 106±10 % M-1) related to (S)-EH+ (Ka=0.9 106±10 % M-1) is determined in the presence of the (R,R,R)-D cage. This enantiopreference is in close agreement with molecular dynamics simulation.

BN-Isosteres of Nonacene with Antiaromatic B2 C4 and N2 C4 Heterocycles: Synthesis and Strong Luminescence

Embedding both boron and nitrogen into the backbone of acenes to generate their isoelectronic structures has significantly enriched the acene chemistry to offer appealing properties. However, only small BN-heteroacenes have been extensively investigated, with BN-heptacenes as the hitherto longest homologue. Herein, we report the synthesis of three new nonacene BN-isosteres via incorporating a pair of antiaromatic B2 C4 and N2 C4 heterocycles, representing a new length record for BN-heteroacenes. The distance between the B2 C4 and N2 C4 rings affects the contribution of the charge-separated resonance forms, leading to tunable antiaromaticity of the two heterocycles. The adjusted local antiaromaticity manifests substantial influence on the molecular orbital arrangement, and consequently, the radiative transition rate of BN-3 is greatly enhanced compared with BN-1 and BN-2, realizing a high fluorescence quantum yield of 92 %. This work provides a novel design concept of large acene BN-isosteres and reveals the importance of BN/CC isosterism on their luminescent properties.

Dynamic covalent self-assembly and self-sorting processes in the formation of imine-based macrocycles and macrobicyclic cages

Investigating the self-assembly and self-sorting behaviour of dynamic covalent organic architectures makes possible the parallel generation of multiple discrete products in a single one pot procedure. We here report the self-assembly of covalent organic macrocycles and macrobicyclic cages from dialdehyde and polyamine components via multiple [2 + 2] and [3 + 2] polyimine condensations. Furthermore, component self-sorting processes have been monitored within the dynamic covalent libraries formed by these macrocycles and macrobicyclic cages. The progressive assembly of the final structures involves intermediates which undergo component selection and self-correction to generate the final thermodynamic constituents. The homo-self-sorting observed seems to involve entropic factors, as the homoleptic species present a higher symmetry than the competing heteroleptic ones. This study not only emphasizes the importance of an adequate design of the components of complex self-sorting systems, but also verifies the conjecture that systems of higher complexity may generate simpler outputs through the operation of competitive self-sorting.

An imine linked fluorescent covalent organic cage: the sensing of chloroform vapour and metal ions, and the detection of nitroaromatics

Fluorescent covalent organic cage molecule (F-COC) showed enhanced emission intensity in chloroform solution and polymer matrix film form in presence of chloroform vapours.

Design of a Multifunctional Indium-Organic Framework: Fluorescent Sensing of Nitro Compounds, Physical Adsorption, and Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Dyes

The detection of nitro compounds and removal of organic dyes remain urgent issues because they are poisonous to humans. Taking advantage of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials, we demonstrate herein an indium-organic framework (InOF) exhibiting sensitive fluorescence sensing of nitro compounds, prominent dye capture, and excellent photodegradation of dyes. By using 4,4',4″-s-triazine-1,3,5-triyltri-p-aminobenzoate (TATAB), an amino-functionalized BTB-like linker, the 3D SNNU-110 structure ({[In₃OCl(H₂O)₂(TATAB)₂]}_n) is formed. SNNU-110 shows a 3,6-connected 3,6T22 topology with TATAB and [In₃O(CO₂)₆] tricapped trigonal-prismatic clusters as 3- and 6-connected nodes. Thanks to the fluorescence properties and amine recognition sites of TATAB, SNNU-110 exhibits excellent performance of fluorescence quenching for six electron-deficient nitroaromatics. The intercrossing 1D channels in SNNU-110 formed from the a- and b-axis directions with dimensions of about 18 Å × 11 Å can capture diverse cationic, anionic, or neutral dyes effectively. What is more, the existence of an inorganic [In₃O] cluster enable SNNU-110 to be a good photocatalyst. Upon irradiation with a 300 W xenon lamp, SNNU-110 shows outstanding photocatalytic activity toward rhodamine B (RhB) and methylene blue (MB), and there was almost no degradation. The catalytic activity can retain about 94.6% (RhB) and 93.1% (MB), respectively. Overall, SNNU-110 fully demonstrates the power of multicomponent MOFs, which provide a feasible route for the design of functional materials toward to pollutant identification and removal applications.

Organic Imine Cages: Molecular Marriage and Applications

Imine condensation has been known to chemists for more than a century and is used extensively to synthesize large organic cages of defined shapes and sizes. Surprisingly, in the context of the synthetic methods for organic imine cages (OICs), a self-sorting/self-selection (molecular marriage) process has been overlooked over the years. Such processes are omnipresent in nature, from the creation of galaxies to the formation of the smallest building blocks of life (the cell). Such processes have the incredible ability to guide a system toward the formation of a specific product or products out of a collection of equally probable multiple possibilities. This Minireview sheds light on new opportunities in cage design offered by the self-sorting/self-selection protocol in OICs. Recent efforts to explore organic cages for various exciting new applications are discussed; for example, for detection of harmful small organic molecules, as templates for nucleation of metal nanoparticles (MNPs), and as proton-conducting materials.

Exploitation of the Flexidentate Nature of a Ligand To Synthesize Zn(II) Complexes of Diverse Nuclearity and Their Use in Solid-State Naked Eye Detection and Aqueous Phase Sensing of 2,4,6-Trinitrophenol

Three Zn(II) complexes, [Zn₂(HL)₂(NO₃)₂]·H₂O (1), [(Zn₄L₂)(μ₃-OH)₂](NO₃)₂·0.5H₂O (2), and [(Zn₆L₂)( o-van)₂(μ₃-OCH₃)₂(μ₃-OH)₂](NO₃)₂ (3), have been synthesized by exploiting the flexidentate nature of a multidentate Schiff base ligand, H₂L ( N, N'-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)diethylenetriamine), by changing the reaction conditions and stoichiometry of the reactants. All three complexes are highly fluorescent in solution as well as in solid and have been used as luminescence sensors toward nitrophenol explosives in both the media. In aqueous/methanol medium, these complexes show very high selectivity and sensitivity with detection limit in ppb (2.03) or nM level (8.89 nM) for picric acid. The yellow color of all three Zn(II) complexes changes to red on mixing with small amount (∼5%) of picric acid in solid state, revealing the potential of these complexes for practical use in naked eye detection of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) or picric acid in ambient light. In order to identify the host-guest interactions between Zn(II) complex and TNP, single crystals of the adduct of TNP with Zn(II) complex, [Zn₂(HL)₂(H₂O)₂][C₆H₂N₃O₇]₂ (4), were grown. Its X-ray crystal structure reveals that two picrate ions are attached to a dinuclear host with the help of H-bonding and π···π interactions, throwing light into the quenching mechanism and selectivity of detection.

Carbon dot-decorated porous organic cage as fluorescent sensor for rapid discrimination of nitrophenol isomers and chiral alcohols

Isomers discrimination plays a vital role in modern chemistry, and development of efficient and rapid method to achieve this aim has attracted a great deal of interest. In this work, a novel carbon dot-decorated chiral porous organic cage hybrid nanocomposite (CD@RCC3) was prepared and used to fabricate fluorescent sensor. The resultant CD@RCC3 was characterized by using a range of techniques, finding that CD@RCC3 possesses strong and stable fluorescent property in common organic solvents, especially it exhibits chiral property. The potential application of CD@RCC3 in fluorescence sensing was demonstrated by isomers discrimination. The designed sensor was successfully used to rapid discriminate nitrophenol isomers. Meanwhile, it exhibited differentiation ability towards phenylalaninol and phenylethanol enantiomers. Our work enriches the type of synthetic materials for fluorescence sensing, and provides a simple method for distinguishing structural isomers and chiral isomers.

Anion-dependent thermo-responsive supramolecular superstructures of Cu(ii) macrocycles

A heteroditopic ligand predominantly self-assembled into a dinuclear Cu(ii) macrocycle with various Cu²⁺ salts. However, each macrocycle is further hierarchically assembled to distinct supramolecular superstructures, where the shape of the morphology is found to be highly dependent on the counter-anions and temperature.
