Monitoring Reactions on Solid Phases with Raman Spectroscopy

Comparison of Different Cure Monitoring Techniques

The ability to measure the degree of cure of epoxy resins is an important prerequisite for making manufacturing processes for fibre-reinforced plastics controllable. Since a number of physical properties change during the curing reaction of epoxy resins, a wide variety of measurement methods exist. In this article, different methods for cure monitoring of epoxy resins are applied to a room-temperature curing epoxy resin and then directly compared. The methods investigated include a structure-borne sound acoustic, a dielectric, an optical and a strain-based observation method, which for the first time are measured simultaneously on one and the same resin sample. In addition, the degree of cure is determined using a kinetic resin model based on temperature measurement data. The comparison shows that the methods have considerable but well-explainable differences in their sensitivity, interference immunity and repeatability. Some measurement methods are only sensitive before and around the gel point, while the strain-based measurement method only reacts to the curing from the gel point onwards. These differences have to be taken into account when implementing a cure monitoring system. For this reason, a multi-sensor node is suitable for component-integrated curing monitoring, measuring several physical properties of the epoxy resin simultaneously.

Monitoring Solid-Phase Reactions in Self-Assembled Monolayers by Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

Nanopatterned surfaces enhance incident electromagnetic radiation and thereby enable the detection and characterization of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), for instance in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Herein, Au nanohole arrays, developed and characterized as SERS substrates, are exemplarily used for monitoring a solid-phase deprotection and a subsequent copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition "click" reaction, performed directly on the corresponding SAMs. The SERS substrate was found to be highly reliable in terms of signal reproducibility and chemical stability. Furthermore, the intermediates and the product of the solid-phase synthesis were identified by SERS. The spectra of the immobilized compounds showed minor differences compared to spectra of the microcrystalline solids. With its uniform SERS signals and the high chemical stability, the platform paves the way for monitoring molecular manipulations in surface functionalization applications.

Spectroscopic and Electronic Properties of Molybdacarborane Complexes with Non-innocently Acting Ligands

The molybdacarboranes [3-{L-κ² N,N}-3-(CO)₂ -closo-3,1,2-MoC₂ B₉ H₁₁ ] (L=2,2'-bipyridine (2,2'-bpy, 1 a) or 1,10-phenanthroline (1,10-phen, 1 b)) incorporating well-known potentially non-innocent ligands (CO, 2,2'-bpy, 1,10-phen) and the "non-spectator" nido-carborane ([η⁵ -C₂ B₉ H₁₁ ]^2- ) ligand were prepared and fully characterised. High-resolution mass spectrometry, single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods, spectroscopy (IR, (resonance) Raman, NMR), cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry (electrochemical properties) were supported by theoretical investigations of the electronic structure (DFT, CAS-SCF, TD-DFT).
